When you get in this craft there will be many obstacles you’ll need to get up, over and around from. It takes time to understand and develop and style when shooting pictures. Time and time again when your just snapping away you will waste tons of energy not getting the shot, this is part of the challenge. Think of it as an exercise and you build you way and opening the doors to your creativity. Never sit there and think that you have no vision, no talent and your just wasting time in just doing nothing.
Its not just about vision or talent, I’ve learned that the hard way. It also involves communicating, having a open and free mind and time… Time is precious when you want to make a picture with meaning.

Day four (4) right after 3… They say its not always about gear… well, that’s partially the truth!

Day in and day out over the internet you’ll constantly hear “Good gear is better” or “It’s not always about the gear” and “The best gear helps you make better pictures”. Well, in my opinion all of it is partially true.
- Good gear is better – Yes, good gear is better when your getting serious about photography. The better the gear the more knowledge you’ll embed in your brain on handling gear. Also, better gear lasts longer over the years and better photography gear takes a bigger beating while you on the job.

- It’s not always about the gear – Yes, once again, partially true. depending on what kind of photography your into the. Once you take on this craft and jump more and more complicated jobs with bigger budgets, you’ll bump into challenges that need to get resolved right there right now! Always having the right gear for your paid or non-paid photography projects is always important. I mean, you choose to do this as a career right!

- Better gear helps you make better pictures – True, True and always True!
If this weren’t true we would still be shooting film! Imagine learning photography in those days!

Some of you may not agree to many of my posts during my 90 day Black & White photography venture, some of you will agree to a certain level. These posts are written everyday to help inspire. Give you a different approach at things, and not to be bias on photography tools and techniques. We all start from the ground up. A point-n-shoot, a camera phone or your simply just taking pictures and want non-bias answer to things. As my venture goes on I will be posting more and more interesting subjects, images and sharing insight of things on how I look at it from my point of view. If you have crits or comments please share them. Everyone is free to share their visual thoughts!

LataZzzz…
~Jay

The one thing Pistachios, Cashews and Almonds have in commons is that their all nuts. Just like we are about many things. Like photography, lenses, gear, applications/software and more. The one thing we keep forgetting to focus on is our ability to take a raw image straight out of the camera and give a meaning to it. We always forget to carefully look into the image instead of “at” the image and look for its purpose on the folder we place them in and forget they’ve ever existed after a couple of hours.
Sometimes it take patience along with a clear mind to go out and shoot in a relaxing area and make awesome images. Now that it is a new year we all need to focus on the knowledge we all have ingested from all the workshops and online classes we’ve taken and put our eyes and brains to the test. Go out and shoot! I don’t care what it is, squirrels, train tracks, brick walls or bridges. Go out and shoot what you like. Shoot on fully manual… “FULLY MANUAL” – put the leans and camera to the test. Go out and make that Multi-Hundred/Thousand dollar machine your bitch!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Okay, its 2012 and now its time to get back in the groove of things and get shooting for the love of it. As you may remember I started the 90 Day Black & White Photography project back in October of 2011. I had a pretty good start at things then the end of the year brought me some challenging obstacles I needed to get out of the way.
So, back to the beginning from Day 1 (one) all the way to Day 90, I will be bringing you all images from my everyday travels and challenges. I will show you very minor edited images and true to form as I see them. My goal is to create great pictures and try my best and create inspiration to you all. So, once again the journey continues here everyday for the next 90 Days.

Happy New Year to you all, happy shooting! #ClickClickPOW

If you haven’t already guessed, there’s been a delay!
My 90 Day Black & White Photography project has been put on hold for a while. I have been working on some end of the year paid projects and my focus needs to be dedicated to solely that for now. I’m going to go all out and finish this year with a great feeling. Started some jobs that I was in line for and finished them with happy returning clients. Now all I have is one more to finish up and BOOM! Back to the beginning again.

I’ll be starting the 90 Day Black & White project again on January 1st 2012 all the way to my BDay, March 1st. I’ll be dedicated to that at the end of my everyday life and will be sharing content with you all as the day come and go. Sorry for not keeping you all updated on this. See you all on the New Year!

Happy Holidays everyone!

FDNY Ladder Company 10 – Engine Company 10. – One of the first to respond in the 911 Tragedy. Located directly next to where the towers use to be, literally!

This fire house has experienced some hardcore ups and downs, buried knee deep in ashes and they still went out and sacrificed their lives to do the job they were assigned to do. More like “To do the job they were born to do”!

10 Years later this fire house is still located in its original spot. Next to the ground zero location has been rebuilt and is stronger then ever. Not one person can pass the ever so famous fire house without rubbing the Ten House Bronze Wall and pay their respects and give their thank you’s!

So, here we are on day 8 of my 90 Day Black & White Photography Project. I for one have been procrastinating everyday telling myself “Naaa, I’m not going to post today” or “Naaa, I got nothing special to shoot for the public today.” and/or “Naaa, they don’t want to see what I have to say today.” Thanks to all your emails and comments on Twitter and Facebook I have been kept motivated to keep shooting and posting for this slight challenge I put myself to for the remainder of the year.

Now, why would I call this post “Gloves Off” you ask. Simply because during the next 82 days I will not be sugar coating anything. I will not be doing any hand holding as I share my knowledge and progress in this profession. I will be one of the many others out on the internet sharing my experience and sharing my knowledge with a no-holds-barred approach. I refuse to let you all think that its all popcorn and cotton-candy out here, but sadly its not. We have to compete with others low balling our talent. We have to meet deadlines and last but not least “we have to get the shot”!

Its not always about gear, or editing know-how or how many friends you have following you on Facebook and Twitter. Its about getting to know the truth behind your work. Knowing what the client wants and giving them what they pay for. Its about shooting for the stars but not expecting it to be done overnight!

-Jay

In this profession there are days we think we going to need a savior, a hero. Perhaps a Life Boat sort of speak. Times become rough when you get involve in the photography world. We tend to come head on with obstacles & challenges we’ve never thought we bump into.
There are certain times in the year that business tends to slow down. Then we worry… How in the world are we gonna put the food on the table for my family, how are we gonna pay the bills. My advise to you if your going to take this profession head-on as a full-time gig… Keep shooting, never stop! Plan ahead and sell your art work locally. And if you have internet skills open up a paypal account and sell’em online also. Certain photogs forget that they need to plan their year ahead. February-August Spring and Summer shooting. September- January Fall & Winter shoots. In between shoot some scenery, landscapes and if you desire more of a challenge, shoot some real world journal type stuff. believe it or not all these topics sell! There’s a client/critic for all types of photography!

Day 2 was a total blank to me, lack of inspiration and disappointment at both of my teams for losing games both on the same day. I suddenly came across an old key-chain hanging on my key rack collecting dust. I brought out the Canon 7D, the 105mm Lens and started shooting until I got an interesting angle. Nothing big to brag about, just a little something to contribute for the second day of the project.

Onwards to Day 3 after the Jump…

Okay, so we’re here on day 3. Did a double callabo with 2 & 3 because I missed out on the opportunity due to some NY Yankees Game.

Here I shot a bottle of Purell that was hanging around in my office. The angel that it was caught my eye. The sun shining thru, the clarity of the bottle, so I thought.. “This has got to be the shot for day 3”! Nothing big to talk about, just getting a couple of day in before I get on the bigger things. Manually practicing ISO and Aperture setting as the days go by and I challenge myself shooting natural Black & White on the Canon 7D.

Hey guys, Its been a while since my last blog post. Just been busy with things here in New York. Been working on rebranding, networking and all around promotional stuff. As the Summer came and left I was pretty busy with Clients and projects. Now its time to wind down, calculate all the end of the year progress and double up for next year.

Below here you will see some images I put together for my 90 Day B&W project. Just a little something to keep me busy as the year winds down and I keep up by polishing my chromatic skills by paying homage to the original photography format we had since the beginning of our passion, or trade in photography.

Everyday I will be posting an image that caught my attention and I thought that I should share with you all.
Please be sure to leave your opinions, suggestions, critique and whatever else can fit here on the comment fields. I will be posting all kinds of images everyday with a no holds barred rule to editing with Photoshop. Only reason I’ll be using Photoshop is to add a border and nothing else! All Exif/Meta Data will be attached to the images as well supplied within the post. Thanks for coming by everyone!

When faced with the challenge of light, many of us photographers simply reach in our trusty camera bag and grab another strobe or two to throw more light at it. We accept the challenge and attack. I’ve been challenging myself lately to modify the light and add detail or texture and change the focus of the image.

Years ago, I was at a Marty Rickard seminar and was amazed at what he was doing with simple light modifiers; reflectors, mirrors and gobos. He could light up a barn at sunset and make it look like high noon. And on the flipside he could take full daylight and shape it, give it depth and texture and make it look like he was shooting at sunset in a wooded glen.

You can put as much production into modifying light as you like or keep it simple with one or two units to keep it fun. As far as light modifier we have many tools at our disposal:

soft boxes

umbrellas

reflectors and light panels

gobos

mirrors

glass/windows

translucent materials

fabrics

blinds and other window coverings

In the example photo above I’ve used three different techniques to modify the light.
Photo 1, this is natural light coming through the window about an hour before sunset. Beautiful color and direction but a little harsh. While the dark shadow on Celia’s left cheek may be the perfect look for a leading man or athlete, it’s a little harsh for a girl of 11 years.

Photo 2, I added a white piece of foam core about 18 inches from Celia’s face, right next to her shoulder at 90 degrees to the camera. You can see how a simple reflector that cost less than $3 opens up the shadow and makes a more pleasing portrait.

Photo 3, a lace curtain is placed about 18 inches from Celia’s face and we still have the reflector to Celia’s left. I’ve done this before with brides using their lace from their veil projected on a seamless background. It’s a nice, low-cost alternative to projectors or focusable studio lights and templates.

Photo 4, I placed the same lace curtain about 6 feet from Celia with the reflector still on her left shoulder. You can see how this will soften the lines of the pattern on her skin creating fun and interesting shadows. Playing with and mixing patterns, distance-to-subject and opacity of the fabric can make the portrait unique and fun. The easy thing about this technique, if you’re using window light is that you can hang the lace from the window and double up the lace in spots with clips and lets you play with the texture and shadows without an assistant.

One of my favourite techniques is to use a honeycomb grid over a studio spot and use lace to project on my subject and use one or two gobos to feather the light managing the shadows with a little detail.

I look forward to seeing any images you may have with light modifiers.
Cheers,
At first I wasn’t familiar with who ClubZone.fm was until I logged on and was set to see who these guys were. It was a week before my interview, so I decided to check Clubzone out for the next couple days. God knows that I was in need of some good music and entertainment while working in the lab processing my images from my current shoots. So I gave it a go. I rely on music while working, and I have tons of CD’s and Mixtapes from various DJ’s from around the world that I have worked with and still do work with today.

Monday- Friday: 8am EST The Morning After Show with Al Money
When I launched my browser and directed to www.ClubZone.fm I wasn’t expecting to get what I got that first morning. I logged in and heard a well control morning show Uncensored of course with the host/owner M.C. Al Money and his Co-Host Jay the Intern. Giving their viewers and listeners (because its online and mobile enabled) up to date information on Sports, life, entertainment and a whole bunch of other non-censored stuff people listen to while at home or work. To put it this way, invite Opie & Anthony, Howard Stern, Star & Buckwild, FunkMaster Flex and Ed Lover… put them in one room, one radio station for 4 hours and that’s what you’ll get on the Morning After Show with Al Money. Not only are they a great source for music and entertainment but they also help out struggling DJ’s and other raw sources of talent get their time on the waves and get recognized by the listening public and build a fan base over at ClubZone, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and the rest of the social networks they all affiliate with.

Everyday after “The Morning After Show” on ClubZone you have a killer roster of talented DJ’s and hosts of all genre’s lined up from noon all the way to midnight spinning the best of all music selections for the public. The music selections are from Top 40’s, Top 100’s, Underground Tracks, Club Bangers, remixes and many more. These DJ’s are each given a two hour set to let loose and give the listeners and viewers the best of the best in club thumping tunes, and the best thing about it is “No Commercials”, just great music through the whole set.

I give props to Alex aka M.C. Al Money and Team for creating a network like such. I mean I know that there’s allot of online entertainment stations out there doing the same thing but “not many” online stations out there feed live video casts (in HD), have a roster of live killer DJ’s and on top of it all not all online stations are 24/7 like ClubZone.FM.

Now, my day was getting closer for my interview and I’m totally hooked, EF’That!, my whole Family and Team (JayRodPhotos) are hooked… simply because of the music selection, entertainment and the fact that its not like any other stations out there. No repetitive music playing hundreds and thousands of times a day, no commercial nonsense and they focus on bringing in new talent for the listeners and viewers everyday of the week.

Now, on to my interview. I got a cool 30 minutes on the air and was being asked the who’s, the what’s, the when’s and where’s. I was trying my best to keep my cool but at the same time I was excited because I was getting heard from many viewers and listeners from all over. I was there letting them know that I too as a photographer cater to the musicians, actors, models and all other undiscovered raw talent that was in need of a network, and I was there with clubzone and crew as well to help them reach onto the next step in getting their faces seen and their voices heard.

I was given 30 minutes on Friday in the busiest time of the day- 5PM, I was on the Traffic Jam and it was a great feeling to let everyone know what was going on during the half hour I was on. Shouting everyone out and giving them the news and the 411 about me and my Photography business.

I got to thank Clubzone and crew for giving me the opportunity on introducing myself on the waves. I got to meet allot of interesting up and coming talents and business owners that I know is going to make an impact from here to the next couple of years. A network like this does not come thru everyday and give you the opportunity on a silver platter. Once you get your foot in the door just make sure you participate and in return show them some appreciation and acknowledge their existence, because if you turn down this opportunity you never know when another one like so will come your way.

My final thanks and supports are to the following…
- ClubZone.FM
- Al Money
- Mojo Jojo
- DJ Quest
- DJ Jon-Doe
- DJ Blanco
- DJ BlendsZ
- Jay the Intern
- Anthony aka The Talent
- Forever FlYy Apparel
- YouBe Tank Tops
- And last but not least, my Wife, My Manager and my staff over at JayRodPhotos.com

Remember peoples, support you local talent!
~JayRod

When I was a wee lad, I learned the benefits of using short lighting instead of broad lighting.

In the example you see here, the photographer who shot this cowboy portrait, chose to use broad lighting, placing the light to photograph into the broad side of the face (or shooting into the cowboy’s ear). The image of the rollergirl was shot with a modified short light as depicted in the diagram.

Short lighting occurs when we place the light to photograph into the persons face – lighting for the back half of the face and the front side (closest to the camera) will fall into shadow.

In this example of the rollergirl, Pippi Van Whalen of the North Star Roller Girls we’ve modified the short lighting by placing a reflector on the shadow side to reduce the shadow just a bit.

The benefits of short lighting:

li>when used correctly and provide a slimming effect on your close-ups

when placing a scar or imperfection towards the light reduces any shadow to make it disappear

when used with a reflector provides a beauty light for women

helps the the viewer focus on the eye. The contrast created brings out the white of the eyes and provides a beautiful, rich eye colour

gives you great catchlights in the eyes. Makes ‘em sparkle

The ways to control the shadow:

Use a large softbox. By placing the large softbox close to your subject you will have a nice fall-off from light to shadow. Place it farther away from your subject to give you a dramatic shadow

Use a reflector. A large reflector, close to the subject will give a nice even ‘fill’ on the subject and by adding gold or silver gives you great details

Use a fill light. You have greater control with the fill light to provide a softer transition to shadow and add a different colour cast (using gels)

Use a gobo/black foamcore – by using a black foamcore, you can control the light the falls on the front of the subject of enhance the shadows (works great for men or athletes)

Now don’t get me wrong, there are times when broad lighting is the best choice for the subject, but for portraits I’ve found the rule of thumb to ring true and use short light or modified short light for your best portraits.

I look forward to seeing your examples of short lighting.

Thanks and have a wonderful day!

I once noticed a sign on a copywriters wall that said:

When shooting rapids in a canoe, if you say ‘I don’t know’, the river will decide for you. In marketing if you don’t know what to do, the river of consumerism will drop your brand right over the falls.
You and your team need to have a clear detailed plan of where you’re going and how to expect to get there. And equally important, that plan needs to be actively managed by the team, with changes and alterations as the consumer landscape data is refined into information and analyzed into knowledge.
Climb into you canoe – and get ready to ride the rapids.

Remember, things are not easily done over night. Success takes hard work, studying your competition and last but not least, make sure you involve your team in your next venture.

Keep moving forward, your time will come. Build a niche and mold an effective brand!

A year ago today I lost my best pal Lynx due to kidney failure, I know many of you may say “Oh Boy, Get over it!” But that’s not the case. The main reason I still carry this on my shoulder is because Lynx was not only my best pal, he was like one of my children. Everyday, every morning Lynx made sure I had his attention and he had my attention as well. Lynx was not your ordinary cat, he was one to hold a conversation with anyone who was willing and dedicated to speaking and listening to him.
Lynx gave love to everyone who walked in the door. Human or Animal Lynx was there to share his expertise in love giving.

Last year I went on vacation when all of a sudden he got sick on me. For 10 days straight we went from one expert vet to another, we got nowhere, Same results and no good news. Our final stop was to a specialist local in our area. Lynx lasted 3 days with them. With the best of care every hour, every minute, every day this special team of vets ran tests and couldn’t come up with any solution to save Lynx and that’s where I got the suggestive bad news. I had no other choice, he was suffering and I was suffering. He was in pain and I was crushed inside wishing I was in some third-world country where they would build him an iron lung that’ll help him live at least 10 more years. After my family and I agreed to the choice we gave our final “Good-byes”. We took it in harder then we thought!

Lynx, you will always been in our hearts!

Lynx was my sunshine!
I miss you and I love you Lynx!
I refuse to say goodbye… so I’m going to say see ya later my friend!
Hugs and Kisses <3

RAINBOW BRIDGE POEM
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When a pet dies – one that’s been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable, fear and worry free.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and the vigor of youth. Those who were abused, hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again just as we want to remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them – someone who had to be left behind. That someone who was kind, gentle and loving. That someone who took the extra step, stayed the extra minute, reached out and touched with love, even once.
The animals all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent, his eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look into the big, trusting eyes of your special love, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together. . . . . . . . . . . . .
~Author Unknown

Everyone seems to have their own technique and I’ve tried a few over the years but what the best way for me to get predictable fireworks photos is by using the following technique.

What you’ll need:

Camera with manual settings I prefer a digital SLR for complete control, but you can make this work with compact cameras with either a fireworks setting or manual override

Sturdy tripod I know many people say this, but if you want clear straight lines, a dependable, adjustable but sturdy tripod. You don’t want this slipping and shaking during your exposure

Remote Cable Release I prefer one with a lock and one at least 30 inches in length. You’ll use this to trip the shutter and hold it open for longer bursts

5×7 inch black non-reflective card To cover the lens and adjust your exposures

Flash Light To help you review your settings or possibley paint your foreground with light.

Water, Insect repellant and comfortable shoes You have to take care of yourself, right?

It helps if you can scout the location prior to the event. Preferable getting an obstructed view and a place to place your blanket and cooler and relax. I try to find a place that could offer some interesting reflections or silhouettes.

Set your camera on the tripod and make sure the legs are secure from slipping. Connect the cable release and test to make sure it’s working and get out your black card. Set your camera to manual setting and put your shutter speed at B (bulb). You will dictate the shutter speed using your cable release and black card.

Now decide if you want the skies to be black or if you want some detail or colour in the background. Or if you have a building in your foreground you may want to include some of that detail in your exposure. I prefer black skies and will use the following as starting points for exposure settings for sensor sensitivity/ISO and your aperature.:

ISO/Sensitivity: 100, Aperature f/4

ISO/Sensitivity: 200, Aperature f/5.6

ISO/Sensitivity: 400, Aperature f/8

ISO/Sensitivity: 800, Aperature f/11

ISO/Sensitivity: 1600, Aperature f/16

Keep in mind that the fireworks are extremely bright and will clip out very easily. The lower your ISO the darker the skies and the limited amount of detail you’ll have.

Now you’re ready to shoot.

When it’s time for the fireworks, place the black card in front of your lens, trip the shutter (lock it if you can) wait for the trailer to shoot up and once it disappears, lift the card away from the lens and capture the burst.

Place the card back in front of the lens. If you want to capture multiple bursts repeat this process. If you’re satisfied with one burst, release the shutter, review the exposure (assuming you’re shooting digital) and adjust the f/stop or ISO to suit your camera, lens and environment.

Now this seems like a lot of detail for getting the shots, why not just trip the shutter and let it go? By all means, do it, have fun with it and see what you get. Shooting fireworks is a lot about adjustments and experimenting, but if you can predict what it’s going to look like and being able to adjust will help you increase the number of amazing fireworks photos.

So what kind of lens do I use? Most of the time, I’m shooting with an 18-55 lens. Moderate wide-angle to normal. But shooting with a telephoto zoom can help you create some nice abstract light paintings.

Things to consider for the quality of your image

With higher ISO you will increase the grain/noise of your image plus it will detect a lot of the bomb smoke. While it can provide some great effects, you may want to experiment and adjust

To capture the trails/bursts, you’ll have exposure times for a single burst around 4-8 seconds, This can create some great light trails from other sources but may also create hotspots around street lights. Just be aware.

Reflections of water are generally between 1/2 and a full stop below your normal bursts but are amazing if you can get them just right.

If you’re shooting the grand finale you will see an enormous amount of bursts in a single area and you may experience some blown out areas in your image.

Experiment and have fun. I’d love to see what you shoot for fireworks this season.

Cheers!
