Tell us about you, your children and where you live

I live in Edmonton with my husband of nine years Clay. We have two kids, and a dog. Bailey is 11 and Jaxson is 3 and Paws. I work as a Special Needs Educational Assistant four days a week. The hours allow me lots of time with my kids and it’s a job I can bring an interesting perspective to having Cerebral Palsy myself.

Do you have help?

My help comes in different forms from people to adaptive equipment. Jaxson loves his dayhome, with playmates his age and who he calls “Nanna Franca”. My girls ( I babysat as a teenager) now teenagers themselves, help with housework, (difficult things for me like floors and bathtubs) and spending time with us and the kids. We are surrounded by great family and friends, we all help each other as needed. Like taking turns having each other’s kids so we don’t pay for sitters.

My husband has been incredible in our parenting journey at seeing what isn’t working for me and creating something that does. Things in this world aren’t created for someone who has limited balance and uses a crutch. He’s modified things like drop down side on a crib, to building a cart for the bucket car seat to clip on so I could transport baby between house and garage. We moved from a finished home to a work in progress with a different layout (fewer stairs). He understands my independence is important and helps me adapt to keep it.

Best hobby?

I have too many. Scrapbooking and card making top my list, I love photos and preserving family memories. I am also learning to quilt and do cake decorating. My kids are creative and love to be involved in making things. We make many of our gifts it teaches the kids it’s not about the money spent but that how much you thought about the person you’re giving too.

Extracurricular activities for you?

Activities for me have a lot to do with my hobbies. I am also volunteer and board member for Adoption (ABI) society of Alberta. It’s non-profit organization for people touched by adoption. They provide everything from education/workshops, parent groups and fun family events. It’s been invaluable in helping us in the role of advocate for our chosen son and allowed us to meet all new friends with which we have something uncommon in common. Going from no kids to two within a year was a huge transition for us. Adoption (especially an older child) has challenges most can’t relate to.

Extracurricular activities for your babe/children?

Bailey’s in dance, it enhanced a natural talent and is teaching him how to be respectful to girls. We are an electronic game free household my kids love spending time outside. Bikes scooters, card board box forts, snowball fights they do it all. We enjoy the EPL (Edmonton Public Library) I take the boys every Thursday afternoon, early dismissal. They learn a love for reading, and access all kinds of books and learning materials free.

What does a typical family day look like to you?

Like any family we find chores or errands we need to catch up on over the weekends. We all participate so we can get to having fun. The kids have chore charts and we will each have one kid with us while we divide and conquer running around. We get things done and have individual time with each kid. We are fortunate to live in a city that has a ton of year round low/no cost activities and festivals. We like most of them. In summer we enjoy lots of camping and as a household of all boys quading and four wheeling is part of that package. Sunday is always family dinner, my mom and I take turns being the host. I enjoy her turn because there is less mess to clean up but my turn means yummy leftovers. The kids love the quality grandparent time.

Who cooks dinner?

I generally get dinner on the table through the week, though he’s the better cook. I meal plan through the week as it’s often harder to think of what to make then to cook it. It makes shopping easier and cut down on groceries. I also get together once a month with a friend and make 3 meals (all courses) for our freezer. Our kids play while we catch up and we have meals for those crazy nights when you scheduled everything but time to cook. I love to bake, and my crockpot is my favorite appliance.

How does the grocery shopping get done, by whom, with the kids, and do you use coupons?

Costco involves the whole family because I have a slower, often unique way of transferring case lots of things from the cart. It’s provided entertainment for others on more than one occasion. I shop with both kids; this can be challenging and helpful. We make it fun by playing mission impossible in the store. I put one kid in charge of the list and navigating aisles, the other helps put things in the cart. Set the cell phone timer, it’s amazing how quickly it goes and how much fun they have when they think they are playing a game… I am slightly obsessive about couponing. Money saved in the store we put to use in ie. a movie, or an outing on vacation.

How often do you buy something for yourself?

Not often. In crafting I try to repurpose items I have, or craft with someone so we can share our supplies and ideas. I clothes swap with friends when we grow tired of our items, and do the same for our kids as they grow, I get new stuff, kids get a play date, and I enjoy coffee with friends. It’s multitasking with a purpose.

Do you exercise and if so, how/when do you fit the time in to do that?

Exercise has always been key to maintaining mobility. After having two MVA’s this year it has been important to keeping me in the shape to be the mom I need to be. I go to weekly therapy, yoga, and exercise/stretch at home on the other days(when kids are in bed). Any mom who is genuinely with her children does some exercise kids are active; you can’t parent effectively from the couch.

What has parenting taught you?

There is an element of play in everything, you learn more when you find it. Things are always changing so being set in your ways leaves you behind. Each new thing my kids learn teaches me something far more valuable. Parenting does take a village, build your own with people who bring out the best in you. Your kids will learn something from different from each of you.

Favourite beverage special coffee, cocktail?

Whether it’s a hot or cold from my own counter or the shop on the corner the opportunity to catch up with a friend while having a beverage, is always a favorite pastime. On our own or with kids in tow it’s the company that counts.

Cannot leave home without it’ item?

I take a camera everywhere. The best pics of your kids are spontaneous moments. I am always in possession of Bon Jovi tunes and Dr. Pepper chap stick, its the only makeup I wear and I have one stashed everywhere. In each coat pocket the car console etc.

Tell us about you, your children and where you live

My Name is Calli Gagnon, I’m originally from England but made the big move across the sea 22 years ago.
Do you have help? (including childcare, housework, personal assistant)

My Husband is my help. He’s a pretty awesome Dad and helps whenever he isn’t at work obviously. I’m also really lucky to be able to call my Mum who lives 15 minutes away when I need a last minute babysitter too.

What does a typical family day look like to you (weekend)?

If I had my way a typical weekend day would include All day PJ’s and relaxing/playing at home. But usually one or both girls have a birthday party or some kind of party to attend, we visit family whenever we can so weekends are usually best to fit that in.

Twins birth rates are at an all-time high. According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in thirty babies born in the U.S. is a twin. But for expectant parents, giving birth to twins is just the beginning—the real challenge is meeting twin home safety and baby monitoring requirements.

Whether you’re a first-time parent or a parenting veteran, the thought of steering not one, but two fast-moving little ones out of harm’s way can seem overwhelming. But with the right strategy and the right tools, you can keep your sanity intact while keeping your tots safe and secure.

Here are a few tips to help you get a head start on twin-proofing your home and living space.

Technology is your friend. Technology makes raising twins much easier than it was even a few years ago. The latest generation of video monitoring offers crystal clear, interference-free and secure video as well as an extended coverage area. Remote monitoring options, visual/audio alerts and two-way communication features make these systems an easy decision for any family with twins.

Think like a child. One of the best ways to twin-proof your home is to get down on your hands and knees, and view your living space from a twin’s perspective. Drawers, stoves, medicine, electrical outlets, cleaning supplies—the list of potential safety threats you will discover goes on and on. After you have created a list of concerns, purchase and install the appropriate safety gadgets. If you’re not sure where to begin, consult a childproofing professional for assistance.

Consider growth and expandability. As you install monitoring technology and other twin-proofing mechanisms in your home, it’s important to consider expandability. Although your twins may not be very mobile as infants, they will be crawling and walking before you know it, and you’ll need to expand your system to cover new areas of the home. The best monitoring technologies allow you to add monitors and devices to your existing system without having to start from scratch. There are even options available with remote pan/tilt capabilities to capture quick moving little ones from every angle.

Use common sense. The array of technologies and safety gadgets available in today’s parenting marketplace is impressive. But no device is a substitute for a healthy dose of common sense. Ultimately, the best protection for your twins will come from the time and attention you invest in their upbringing, so be sure to augment the safety products you purchase with your eyes, ears and basic parenting skills.

Raising twins isn’t easy—but it’s not impossible. By investing in the right resources and applying some common sense strategies to the parenting task, you’ll be amazed at how easy it will be to create a twin-proof and family-friendly home.

If you took an “extended” maternity leave (mine is going on 8 years), you might find it hard to get back into the work world, or into a similar position you held before you had children.

Use these resume boosting tips to help you get back into the work force:

Volunteer

It’s not paid employment (in a monetary point of view), but volunteering on a (such as a pre-school, school or community league board) will not only get your brains cells moving out of “mommy mode” again, it’ll give you the confidence of being able to accomplish something other than being a parent. Volunteering is great for the community as well as for your resume.

Make sure you add your accomplishments while volunteering to your resume and the things that you were responsible for…in detail.

Take a course

Technology changes so much in a year, as well as many other aspects that pertained to your previous job. My career before children was in Human Resources and the HR industry has changed since my last foray at reading resumes.

Legislation, technology, terminology and common practices evolve over time. Taking a refresher course through a local college or through a local organization, will bring you up to speed on what’s changed over the years.

Use Your Network

There are many organizations specific to your industry, whether it be the IABC (for communications), CGA/CMA or the Law Society for example, keep in contact with them for networking opportunities and events that are happening that you can attend and get your feet wet again.

Meet up with old colleagues and see where the industry is at and what news is happening. Is it in a downturn? Is there need for people with past experience?

Try Something New

There are always aspects, even of our dream job that we didn’t like. As well, you’re not the same person as when you left your career to start your maternity leave. What didn’t you like about your old job? What did you like about it? Is there another job you’ve always been interested in trying but didn’t pursue? This is your time to search out different options. Do some soul searching and see what it would take for a career change.

Start on your own

Entrepreneurship isn’t a quick trip to getting paid, but it can be rewarding working for yourself. Do your research and see if you’re able to start your own business in your field. Are you able to contract your skills out? Do you have a talent that you’ve always wanted to pursue? Whether you’re contracting yourself out as an expert in criminal activity, graphic design or starting a quilting business, research is key. Make sure that your dream is a viable job and you will be paid for your efforts.

Tell us about you, your children and where you live

I own a home based business, Teagan Photography, in Edmonton. I am predominately a newborn photographer, but I do most types of sessions (except weddings and boudoir). I have lived in the metro area my entire life. I have two little girls, Teagan and Tristan and a dog named Shadow. My husband and I have been married for about 8 years.

Do you have help? (incl childcare, housework, personal assistant)

Yes and no. My parents and in-laws regularly watch my children when I have photoshoots. But most of the time they are at home with me. I work on the business side of my company when I can. This often means late nights working or working during naptime.

Best hobby?

I don’t have any hobbies. I actually had to Google “hobby” to see what came up and if I did any of those things. Lol.

Extracurricular activities for you?

I love to hula dance. I have been dancing Polynesian for about 8 years with Tropical Breeze Polynesian Dance Society. It’s something I look forward to every week! My husband and I also love to watch TV together. We are big into Game of Thrones and are watching all 8 seasons of How I Met Your Mother right now.

Extracurricular activities for your babe/children?

Teagan is in preschool right now and she LOVES it. She is also taking swimming lessons. And we are attempting gymnastics classes with Tristan, but she likes to do her own thing. So it’s a bit hard to keep her from running all over the place. We have the family passes to the Telus World of Science and all the City of Edmonton attractions. We try to go as much as we can. Some of my favorite childhood memories were at these places.

What does a typical family day look like to you (weekend)?

I am usually doing photo sessions on the weekends, so we don’t really have typical family days.

Who cooks dinner?

Usually me, although I dread mealtimes. I don’t enjoy cooking. But I am also a vegetarian and have Celiac Disease (I can’t eat anything with wheat gluten), my husband likes meat, and my kids only want to eat cereal or pasta. Mealtimes are so complicated.

How does the grocery shopping get done, by whom, with the kids, and do you use coupons?

We usually just buy what we need when we need it, and then I will do a big shop once a month. Sometimes the kids are with me (thank god for those shopping carts with cars on the front). I don’t use coupons unless it’s an Airmiles coupon. We are trying to bank Airmiles to take the kids to Disney World in a year or two.

How often do you buy something for yourself?

Not very often. When I do, it’s usually camera equipment. My husband and I went to Vegas back in March, and I hit up the outlet malls. So that was good for the year.

Do you exercise and if so, how/when do you fit the time in to do that?

I used to be much more active, but I am finding the balance with two kids and their activities and running a home business hard to manage. But I have been toying with the idea setting up my bike trainer and road bike in my office and riding while I edit. I just haven’t figured out where to put my keyboard and mouse so I can reach it.

Favourite movie?

Bend It Like Beckham. Love that movie!

Favourite nookie song?

Ha ha. Ummm, Portishead is kinda sexy.

Favourite beverage special coffee, cocktail?

I love Chai Tea Lattes from Starbucks. And I don’t really have a favorite cocktail. Anything fruity.

Favourite pair of shoes?

I love my many pairs of Sketchers.

‘Cannot leave home without it’ item?

A change of kids clothes and a spare diaper. Whenever I forget them is when I need them most.

Scary Mommy

With lists like “Things only three year olds can get away with” (number 9 is prevalent in my house: demanding specific food then refusing to eat them), it’s hard not to laugh at this mamma.

I have a major love affair with this blog and I’m not event pregnant. I love Rants from Mommyland because every mom has a different experience and it embraces all mammas from everywhere!

Be warned: you will spend your entire day on this site and will cry laughing. I promise. I’m in a coffee shop downtown Edmonton (ALONE) laughing out loud. Alone.

Tell us about you, your children and where you live

I’m Andrea, married to Michael for a decade. We live in Edmonton and have 3 kids. Carys is 6.5, Bennett is 4.5, and Campbell is almost 2. I’m the Chief Operating Officer and my husband is the Minister of Finance of our home.

Do you have help? (incl childcare, housework, personal assistant)

I don’t have a lot of help but I am very appreciative of the help I do have. When my Mum (aka Turbo Granny) is in town, she takes over but, usually, I am the domestic goddess of the house (I use that term loosely). We’ve recently found a babysitter that we love so we are very happy to have resurrected Date Night!

Best hobby?

I have a craft room in the basement that I wish I spent more time in. Um, online shopping?? Facebook and Pinterest get me through the day.

Extracurricular activities for you?

See above. With the occasional Mom’s Night Out thrown in.

Extracurricular activities for your babe/children?

All 3 are in swimming. Our son just finished his first year of hockey and our eldest daughter is in Sparks. They are showing a keen interest in music so I’ll have to look into that.

What does a typical family day look like to you (weekend)?

Weekends are usually either very relaxing or very busy. Family Fun Night is on Friday and then it’s birthday parties, family events, errands, housework, and/or date night. We try to sleep in but that usually doesn’t happen! We are outside a fair bit in the summer.

Who cooks dinner?

Unfortunately for my family, it’s me! My husband doesn’t get home until late so I am in charge of dinner and it’s usually dreadful. He is in charge of BBQ-ing when it’s nice out.

How does the grocery shopping get done, by whom, with the kids, and do you use coupons?

I do all the grocery shopping with usually just the youngest in tow. I don’t use coupons (I barely remember to bring my wallet) but I do try to collect Airmiles for our vacations.

How often do you buy something for yourself?

Not too often but probably more than I should!

Do you exercise and if so, how/when do you fit the time in to do that?

I break a sweat vaccuming – does that count? I need to get back on the exercise bandwagon. I’m not a spring chicken anymore!

Favourite movie?

Lately it’s been Hall Pass and Friends With Kids. Very relatable! I love me some Downton Abby though!!

Favourite nookie song?

Umm……. Ummmm…….. Crash into Me by DMB (My husband will kill me for posting that!!)

Favourite beverage special coffee, cocktail?

My Starbucks order is embarrassing! I love Takara Plum Wine, fruity drinks, beer, and white wine. No red wine since Halloween of 2005 (it’s a long story…)

Favourite pair of shoes?

Have loved my black and brown boots through the winter but am dying to get into ballet flats and sandals.

’Cannot leave home without it’ item?

WIPES! Normally I would say my phone but I have lived just fine without one since I left it on an airplane 2 months ago (also a long story…)
Thank you for sharing with all of us, Andrea! Thanks for being an Urban Infant reader!

We want to hear how you do it too, Dads! Are you a dad in Edmonton, a career dad, a stay-at-home dad, an entrepreneur dad, something somewhere in between? Contact us (nicola@urbaninfant.ca) to be profiled!

Tell us about you, your children and where you live

I am an engineer working with the provincial government. I have been living in Canada for over 10 years, the last few years of which have been in Edmonton. We live in the south side and like our quiet neighborhood. We have a son- Dhruv who is now 2 years old.

Do you have help? (including childcare, housework, personal assistant)

We send Dhruv to a daycare near my work and they take really good care of him. Dhruv’s grandmother was a significant help to us in his first year! Other than that, we have been given a break a couple of times by my brother’s family when they took care of the boy and we ended up having a great time together.

Best hobby?

You mean other than setting things right at home after Dhruv goes to bed? I am pretty much addicted to word games and puzzles, and play them at lunch breaks and weekends.

Extracurricular activities for you?

I love watching documentaries, anime and offbeat movies. Of late I have loved watching dark-comedies like big-man Japan, four lions and Brazil. I would love to be able to improve my swimming this summer and get more tennis action.

Extracurricular activities for your babe/children?

Dhruv loves pointing out cars, buses, and trucks while we are on the road, playing at the neighborhood school park and being taken on a sleigh on a snowy day. It is literally impossible for us to bring him back from his friends’ homes and Galaxyland.

What does a typical family day look like to you (weekend)?

Skyping with family scattered in various parts of the globe, watching Seinfeld re-runs, shopping, dining out, visiting friends and having them over, having impromptu play dates for Dhruv and drinking lots and lots of tea all day long.

Who cooks dinner?

I make the boring weekday meals, and my wife makes all the gourmet stuff.

How does the grocery shopping get done, by whom, with the kids, and do you use coupons?

My wife doesn’t let me shop by myself. She says that I don’t know what to get, but I think she enjoys the shopping experience (between you and me, I think she is a shopaholic ). She uses checkout 51 and regularly uses the sale flyers to try and convince me to buy stuff.

How often do you buy something for yourself?

There is no rhyme or reason to my buying pattern. The last thing I really wanted for myself and enjoyed using was a caster board. Right now, I am eyeing a djembe that I am renting from Long and McQuade – its great fun to unwind at a drum circle after a long work week.

Do you exercise and if so, how/when do you fit the time in to do that?

Badminton twice a week is the only exercise I get, other than carrying Dhruv around whenever he asks, which is pretty much most of the time.

Favourite movie?

Shawshank Redemption

Favourite nookie song?

Bow-chicka-wow-wow!! Is that even a song?

Seriously, we don’t have a song.

Favourite beverage special coffee, cocktail?

Jack and Coke. We like to head to Cafe O’ Play and Roast Coffee House to unwind with some Java after a work day.

Favourite pair of shoes?

The Merrill that I have for everyday use.

‘Cannot leave home without it’ item?

iPhone, I really feel naked without it!
