Visual historians: the power of reportage sketching

Sketching has a unique way of slowing us down, allowing for a deeper observation and a personal interpretation of the world unfolding around us. It’s a powerful tool for storytelling, connecting us to the stories and events of our surroundings. That’s why, in 2021, we introduced the USK Reportage Grant, aimed at highlighting the storytelling potential of sketching, a founding principle of the USk mission.

In recent years the Urban Sketchers Reportage grant has supported sketch artists, of all levels of experience, to tell unique stories from all around the world. Seeing them come together is an inspiration and a privilege.

Each of these reportage projects demonstrates a  personal interest, cultural exploration and experience, and a narrative element that draws viewers into the heart of the story. Whether through emotional connections, valuable lessons, or unique artistic choices, each reportage project offers a unique perspective on the world around us.

Some of these projects serve as powerful vehicles for social commentary, shedding light on pressing issues such as environmental degradation, urban development, and social inequality. Others tell a more personal story of growth through their environment. Through their art, the artists offer a unique perspective on these issues, inviting us to reflect on the world around us and our role in it.

These diverse stories come together to showcase the beauty and complexity of our global community.

If you are an urban sketcher,  we invite and encourage you to pick up your sketchbook and embark on your own visual storytelling journey.  If you would like to apply for a USK Reportage Grant in 2026 – don’t hesitate!

You are invited to apply to become a correspondent for the 14th International Urban Sketchers Symposium in Toulouse, France which will take place on 15-18 July 2026.

All correspondents will serve on the symposium correspondent team and receive an Open Pass, which allows access to all events, including workshops and demos, as a spectator.

 This year we are recruiting one Local*, one International Sketch Correspondent, and one Video Correspondent (either local or international).

• Post sketches and a brief written article each day on the global USk blog. A reportage-style of sketching and writing is encouraged. Correspondents are also encouraged to share on social media (giving priority to the website) using the symposium hashtag: #USkSymposium2026 #USkToulouse2026
• Have the technical ability and equipment to support the above task, such as a camera and laptop or other means to upload images and text.
• Able to write comfortably in English.
• The ability to speak and write in French is a bonus.
• Work with the other symposium correspondents and symposium committee as a team.

• Recreate “the feeling of being at the symposium” and showcase the host city and its unique location for the USk community who will be watching from afar.

• Capturer les activités quotidiennes pendant les quatre jours du Symposium. The Video Correspondent will also require the following technical skills:

• Skills in video editing include selecting, cutting, adding transitions, music, text, and titles, and subtitles as needed.
• Produce content to be published on YouTube that can easily be adapted for use on other online platforms i.e. Facebook, Instagram
• Have the technical equipment to support the above tasks, such as a phone with a video camera, video camera, microphone, and a laptop, as well as software for video editing and uploading.
• Fluency with  publishing video materials produced either edited or  ‘on the fly’ through Live Streams.

The Symposium planning team and Executive Board will evaluate applications based on how well candidates meet the stated requirements. Because Urban Sketchers is a worldwide organization, global diversity of the correspondents will also be considered. 

Selected candidates will be confirmed by the end of April and publicly announced towards the middle of May 2026.

USK Workshop – August 7-9 2026 (Oslo, Norway)

About the workshop:

Get rid of your fears, loosen up and enjoy your sketching more.
In four connected sessions, you’ll learn four keys to fearless drawing

● Session 1. “Mistakes to best mates” teaches you how to work with mistakes rather than against them.
● Session 2. “Draw like your drunk uncle dances” shows how to push proportions for more expressive drawings.
● Session 3. “Polaroids with a pen” explores using frames to simplify complex scenes and draw faster.
● Session 4. “Watercolour 1,2,3” builds a simple, effective approach of colour mixing with a limited watercolour.

This workshop is about fun and expressive bold drawing rather than accuracy. You’ll end the weekend drawing faster, free-er and fearless, ready to have more fun with your sketchbook.

• Draw with bold, confident lines and apply controlled distortion to enhance sketches.
• Use mistakes as a tool to energize and inform their work.
• Capture multiple perspectives and create a cohesive visual story using frames and colour.
• Apply a values-based approach to limited-palette-watercolour and confidently mixing.
• Produce bold and lively finished sketches.

Suggested materials:

Any pen that makes bold lines. Tombow fudenosuke firm tip is highly recommended. Other options include, copic brush marker, a fat fi neliner (0.5mm or bigger), calligraphy pen, fountain pens etc.
A light grey brush marker Andrew’s favourite is the Faber Castell double ended PITT pen in Warm Grey.
A few coloured markers or colour pencils
Watercolours and brush – Andrew’s big three colours are French ultramarine, transparent yellow and magenta, but any artist-quality paints are fine.
Something to draw on.
A sketchbook you are happy to make working drawings in, and, some A4 sized watercolour paper for the fi nal sketches of each section (4-8 sheets total) Watercolour paper or sketchbook is essential for day 2. Board to support loose, masking tape, folding stool.

About the Instructor

Andrew is a sketchbook artist and Urban Sketcher from Wellington, New Zealand. He learned to draw as an adult and didn’t expect to become obsessed with recording his life in pictures in little books. After more than a decade the sketchbooks are starting to pile up. He is a founding member of his local chapter, Urban Sketchers Wellington and was a workshop instructor at USk Symposium in Poznan 2025. He always draws as much as possible, especially with his young sons—kids are the most fearless and fun artists.

Communications Director Responsibilities

• Develop both the external and internal organizational communication strategy, working with various teams and committees to implement that strategy across all platforms
• Creating overall external messaging  and guidelines to be used for all printed and electronic communications, including the organization’s website, annual report, mailing lists, and social media accounts
• Hone internal communication system and framework for efficient and transparent inter organizational communication.
• Capacity to develop long-term plans and initiatives based on the USk Mission
• Responsible for overseeing paid advertising on social channels, as well as influencer partnerships to optimize reach and engagement.

A successful candidate:

• Is an active Urban Sketcher
• Is experienced in a communications leadership role
• Possess the ability to develop clear communications goals and the metrics to measure progress across various platforms
• Is experienced in working successfully with diverse groups and volunteers
• Has quality communication skills – both written and oral 
• Has the capacity to develop long-term plans and initiatives based on the USk mission
• Minimum one year in a USk leadership role at the chapter or committee level is preferred, but not required
• English language fluency is required. Additional language proficiency is desirable.

This is a volunteer leadership role with global reach. We’re looking for someone who can lead teams and shape communication strategy, planning, and delivering campaigns across the organization’s multiple platforms to support the worldwide Urban Sketchers community.
