Candy

Please do not visit Candy. I was a first hand witness to the management discriminating based on race.

I was with a very diverse ethnic group of people who were all dressed to the nines. The women entered the establishment first, but when they got to the guys they told them there was a $30 cover. The guys, caught off guard, stepped aside to contact those who had already entered. We then watched a small group of Caucasian men enter without paying. I asked this group if they were VIP or knew anyone and of course they did not. I was pleading with the management to let the guys in, but the lowest they were willing to go was $20.

Our group was never anything more than polite and it was huge disappointment, being that we've visited Candy before. There was virtually no line at about a quarter to 10 and the inside was not even half full.

We certainly will not be visiting Candy ever again

MacTarnahan's Tap Room

This brew pub in a little out of the way but definitely worth it. Thursdays there are $2 pints from 7-9 along with the regular happy hours. It does have a little bit of a family feel but I will take that over hipsters any day. Food is always good and happy hour deals are great. -- by Bouchett

Capitol CoffeeHouse and Bistro

This is one of my favorite neighborhood hang outs, and I recommend the happy hour most heartily. The new owners (as of summer 2009) expanded the wine list and some of the reds are wonderful. The slider hamburgers are delicious and a great happy hour deal! -- by LAwriter

Amnesia Brewing

Amnesia is my go-to place for a casual night, friends in town, sunny day brews. Their beers happen to be among my favorites, so I show up often. Happy hour is a deal especially considering the quality. Brats & burgers provide the perfect simple compliment. Truly a Portland fixture. -- by blackbird

Masu

Dropped into Masu for their happy hour, awaiting goodness. I had been often when they first opened and loved the warm, clean atmosphere, and uncomplicated food (cucumber water is a bonus!). I was a bit disappointed in my last visit. Yeah, the deals are sound, but the hot food was mediocre at best, and the cocktails, just okay. I would recommend the sushi and suggest sitting at either bar. Worthy of another try, but not at the top of my list. -- by blackbird

Teardrop Lounge

Plainly stated, I have yet to get a less-than-perfect cocktail from these pros. I trust them in all things saucy. That said, I limit my visitations, lest I'm forced to skimp on other areas of my budget, such as shelter or food. I will come around more often for their happy hour though, for at least I feel like I'm Sally the Saver. Ok, $1-$3 may not be enough to pat myself on the back, but did I mention the quality of their drinks?! They are heavenly. -- by blackbird

23 Hoyt

23 Hoyt has done much to lure in customers. Their happy hour may just be the ticket. Organized in $1 (shoe string fries, marcona almonds, etc.) to $5 (house sausage trio & kraut, burger. etc.) increments, a twosome can have a really enjoyable meal under $30. That alone is impressive. The quality of the food is good and the atmosphere is pleasing enough. Considering the plethora options on 23rd, 23 Hoyt is among the best. -- by blackbird

Tapalaya

This is my favorite happy hour in Portland. $2 Martinis (they will make a cosmo, if you ask) and $2 Hurricans made with fresh juice, not gross mix. I cannot believe it's not packed. Also, food is killer (blackened catfish, mac & cheese, fried pickles). They offer happy hour prices all night long on Wednesdays if you ride your bike (I think I will wait until summer for that one). -- by Lucyduck

Bar Avignon

Bar Avignon features a respectable wine and cocktail menu in a small yet well designed space. Apparently the person that designed Bar Avignon was the same person that designed Beaker and Flask.
