How far has P25 come? Find out tomorrow

I will be moderating a panel discussion at 2 p.m. EST/11 a.m. PST, sponsored by PlantCML, that will examine the P25 standard: what it is, where it is, where it still needs to go and — most important — what it means to public-safety communications users right now.<p>

Is P25 finally reaching maturity?

They're finally here. Last week the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Office for Interoperability and Compatibility announced that eight laboratories were approved to test equipment as part of the Project 25 Compliance Assessment Program. That means first-responder agencies soon will be able to obtain third-party testing information that ensures that P25 equipment operates and interoperates as specified by the standard.

Proprietary legacy systems can limit P25 migration choices

For the past two decades, the public-safety community has eagerly anticipated the day when adoption of the P25 would enable interoperability and that the standard would drive competition among vendors to develop products with myriad price points and feature sets. While the process has taken longer than most wanted, that vision is becoming a reality. P25 is being adopted, which should provide a technical basis for interoperability (it doesn't address the operational/political issues that often are bigger barriers), and there are a host of vendors offering a wide variety of products in what appears to be a healthy competitive environment.

Thales Communications this week demonstrated an expansion of its multiband-radio capabilities, including a demonstration of P25 trunking by its Liberty portable radio and its prototype Liberty mobile radio. While Thales has demonstrated multiband Liberty portable radio's ability to work on conventional analog and digital systems, IWCE is the first time the product has been demonstrated to work in a P25 trunking environment.
