What's that sound?

Oh, never mind. It's just the sound of Alex Smith's starting gig taking its last breath.

The Colin Kaepernick era has officially begun for the San Francisco 49ers.

Never mind that Smith currently ranks as the NFL's No. 3 quarterback with a 104.1 passer rating, right behind Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers.

Never mind that Smith's record since Jim Harbaugh took over is 19-5-1.

Never mind that Smith has thrown 30 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions during that time.

Kaepernick can do all that and more.

Blessed with a rocket for an arm and a 4.53-second 40-yard dash time, Kaepernick can make defenses pay every single play.

On plays when Smith would take a sack rather than try to force a pass into coverage, Kaepernick can avoid the pressure and either run the ball for a big gain or make a huge play downfield to one of the 49ers many talented receivers.

One of the things I was worried about before the season began with this young quarterback is that we didn't know whether or not he would be as careful with the football as Smith—who has been one of the best in the NFL since the beginning of 2011.

So far, Kaepernick has proven to me that he's capable of playing with the same kind of care and precision Smith has showed, but his upside is so much higher than Smith's.

Sure, he needs to work on his touch. Sure, he is raw. But there isn't a throw he can't make, and the 49ers offense is significantly more dynamic with him behind center.

Case in point: Vernon Davis.

Davis hasn't been as involved in the passing game as I'm sure he'd like, and I know I'd like, for the better part of a month. He hasn't caught a touchdown pass since Week 3.

In his first career start, Kaepernick found Davis four times in the first quarter, including a three-yard touchdown pass. Kaepernick trusts his arm more than Smith does, and he's firing the ball into tighter spots than Smith feels comfortable doing.

He's making the same checks at the line of scrimmage that we've seen from Smith the past couple of years, too. One play in particular that stands out to me from this game came in the first quarter: Kaepernick saw Randy Moss on an island on the left side of the field, changed the play and threw it right on the money for a first down.

Who should start for the 49ers the rest of the way in 2012?

As of this moment, with 12:40 remaining in the second half on Monday Night Football against the Chicago Bears, Kaepernick has hit on 9-of-11 passes for 158 yards with one touchdown and zero interceptions.

Against. The. Bears.

Yes, Smith has been a winning quarterback since Harbaugh joined the franchise, but Kaepernick has what it takes to make the 49ers offense into one of the most feared units in the NFL.

Syria Crisis: Turkey Demands NATO Missile Shield On Border

BRUSSELS, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Turkey is expected to formally request on Monday that NATO Patriot missiles be placed on its border to defend against Syrian attacks, Western officials said.

Syrian rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad have been able to take large swathes of land but are almost defenceless against Syria's air force. The rebels have called for an internationally enforced no-fly zone, a measure that helped Libyan rebels overthrow their long-term leader last year.

German Defence Minister Thomas de Maiziere said Germany expected Turkey to make the request to NATO for Patriot deployment on Monday and would study such a request "with solidarity".

"But if we have a deployment of Patriots on the Turkish border then this will happen with German soldiers," he told reporters in Brussels, on the sidelines of a meeting of EU defence ministers.

Only the United States, the Netherlands and Germany have the appropriate Patriot missile system available.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that Turkey could count on "allied solidarity" but said that the missiles would be purely for defence and not for creating a no-fly zone in Syria.

In Damascus, opposition activists said that Assad's forces had started the heaviest bombardment in 40 days of air strikes and artillery shelling aimed at limiting gains by rebels operating on the edge of the capital.

"Multiple rockets launchers are just making huge, random destruction," said Rami al-Sayyed of the Syrian Media Centre, an opposition activists' organisation monitoring Assad's crackdown on the 20-month revolt.

Plagued by division, Syria's opposition formed a broader coalition group last week which was promptly recognised by France as the sole representative body for the Syrian people.

But on Monday, a group of Islamist fighters in Syria's Aleppo province, many of whom are well known members of powerful rebel units in the area, said that they planned to establish an Islamic state and reject the umbrella group, which is led by moderate preacher Mouaz Alkhatib.

However, members of Islamist groups listed in a YouTube video as supporters of the plan told Reuters that they had nothing to do with the announcement, but acknowledged some members of their groups had appeared in the video.

This could suggest cracks in Islamist fighter ranks over how to respond to growing efforts to unify rebel groups and potentially sideline more radical Islamist elements.

BORDER CLASHES WITH KURDS

The civil war, which activists say has killed 38,000 people, has dragged Syria's neighbours and world powers into the conflict. Iran, Russia and China have stood by Assad as France, Britain and the United States have called for his overthrow.

Syrian mortar rounds have fallen in Turkey, Lebanon and Israel as rebels hug the borders looking for safety, and Turkey is in talks with NATO allies about how to shore up security on its 900-km (560-mile) frontier.

Turkey's border has witnessed clashes not only between the rebels and Assad's forces but internal rebel disputes and, increasingly, fighting between the rebels and Kurdish separatist groups.

A Reuters cameraman on the Turkish border said that hundreds of families had fled the Syrian town of Ras al-Ain and were gathering at the border gate, after clashes between rebels and Kurdish separatists who are wary of both rebels and the government.

The Turkish army seemed to be on high alert, sending in military jeeps to patrol the border and stationing soldiers in recently dug trenches along the border.

Turkey has responded in kind to Syrian mortar bombs that land on its soil.

NATO has deployed Patriot surface-to-air missiles to Turkey twice before, once in 1991 and then in 2003, during both Gulf Wars. Those missiles were provided by the Netherlands.

Ankara has twice this year invoked Article 4 of the NATO charter which provides for consultations when a member state feels that its territorial integrity, political independence or security is under threat.

Alexander Von Rosenbach, armed forces analyst at IHS Jane's, said deploying Patriots to Turkey would be partly symbolic. "It's more of a commitment from NATO to say we are behind Turkey," he said.

Manufacturer Raytheon says Patriot provides "a reliable and lethal capability to defeat advanced threats, including aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and UAVs (drones) ....".

Sandown Class mine countermeasures vessel HMS Blyth recently took part in a NATO exercise in the Bay of Izmir in Turkey, successfully locating dummy mines while coming under simulated attack.

The Faslane-based minehunter is currently the command platform for Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2, leading warships from Turkey, Greece, Italy and Germany through several weeks of maritime security operations and exercises.
The most recent exercise saw Blyth use both her ship's divers and the advanced Seafox mine disposal system to detect drill mines laid in her area of operations. At the same time the task group vessels had to respond to simulated attacks by small boats, fast jets and helicopters.
Commanding Officer of HMS Blyth, Commander Tim Davey, said:

"The exercise saw Blyth prove her capability in mine detection and disposal as well as training the ship's force protection teams against a variety of realistic simulated threats. Working closely with the Turkish Navy, the exercise provided us with a great opportunity to train my team and maintain our core skills."

Helping to assist HMS Blyth in her role as command platform are two NATO staff officers from the Greek and Turkish navies who are embarked on board the ship, working closely with the crew to support the planning and execution of the ship's tasking.

"Since arriving in the region in early July, the crew has done an excellent job and, although we will miss our NATO friends, it is a good feeling to be approaching the end of our tour."

The exercise is the latest challenge in a demanding deployment for the sophisticated minehunter. Before arriving in Turkish waters she found herself at the centre of a major salvage exercise in the Aegean Sea. Involving a simulated fire and flood on board, the scenario was designed to draw resources and personnel from other task group ships and test their responses:

"The assistance at sea exercise was a great opportunity for the four vessels in the task group to work together in a high-pressure situation," said Lieutenant Commander Charlie Noonan, Blyth's Executive Officer, who co-ordinates the response in the event of an on board emergency.

"In the end, the response from all the teams was excellent and it proved the close bonding and high levels of co-operation that exist among the sailors."

The emergency exercise finished with a German firefighting team re-entering a smoke-filled compartment, a Turkish first aid team dealing with simulated casualties, and an Italian damage control team conducting dummy repairs to 'flooded' compartments.

The crew of HMS Blyth are now looking forward to three weeks of maritime security operations in the eastern Mediterranean before saying farewell to their NATO colleagues and embarking on the 3,000-mile (4,800km) journey home to Scotland in early December.
During her time with the task group, Blyth has successfully conducted multiple exercises and training all over the Mediterranean, including important maritime security operations and a minehunting exercise in the Black Sea:

"The deployment has been both challenging and highly rewarding," commented Lieutenant Hamish Maxwell, HMS Blyth's Navigating Officer.

"Since arriving in the region in early July, the crew has done an excellent job and, although we will miss our NATO friends, it is a good feeling to be approaching the end of our tour. We are looking forward to the return trip back to the UK with fingers crossed for good weather in the Bay of Biscay."

ISTANBUL - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan described Israel on Monday as a "terrorist state" in carrying out its bombardment of Gaza, underlining hostility for Ankara's former ally since relations between them collapsed in 2010.

His comments came after nearly a week of Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel and Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip. An Israeli missile killed at least 11 Palestinian civilians including four children in Gaza on Sunday.

"Those who associate Islam with terrorism close their eyes in the face of mass killing of Muslims, turn their heads from the massacre of children in Gaza," Erdogan told a conference of the Eurasian Islamic Council in Istanbul.

"For this reason, I say that Israel is a terrorist state, and its acts are terrorist acts," he said.

Ties between Israel and Turkey, once Israel's only Muslim ally, crumbled after Israeli marines stormed an aid ship in 2010 to enforce a naval blockade of the Palestinian-run Gaza Strip. Nine Turks were killed in clashes with activists on board.

Ankara expelled Israel's ambassador and froze military cooperation after a UN report into the incident released in September last year largely exonerated the Jewish state.

Earlier this month Turkey opened the trial in absentia of four former Israeli military commanders over the 2010 raid.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu is to travel to Gaza on Tuesday with a group of foreign ministers from the Arab League.
