SUNA Symposium

The Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates (SUNA) is hosting an educational symposium on 2/26-2/27. Pre-conference workshops include:

• pelvic floor anatomy,
• pharmacology, and
• hands-on clinical skills

With two full days of excellent general and concurrent sessions that will grab your attention, as well as educate you, SUNA is the place to be for continuing education in urologic nursing.  Whether one is new to the specialty or an experienced sub-specialty provider, this event is designed to offer a full array of interesting topics on the newest technologies to treat urinary and fecal incontinence, sexual dysfunction, prolapse, and pelvic pain — just to name a few.

And of course, SUNA will not shy away from the controversies enveloping healthcare, be it patient care issues or scope of practice concerns. About the SUNA Symposium

The Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates is a national, non-profit professional membership association with over 3,000 members and annual revenues of $1.5 million. SUNA derives its income from membership dues (only $75), conference registration fees, exhibits, advertising, grants, and the sale of educational products.

SUNA publishes a professional, peer-reviewed bi-monthly journal (Urologic Nursing Journal) and a newsletter (Uro-Gram). Indiana Urologic Association Meeting

The Indiana Urologic Association is hosting the association’s annual meeting on March 7, 2015 at the Indianapolis Marriot North Hotel in Indianapolis, Indiana. With the advent of the Affordable Care Act and continued changes in health care coverage and regulation, health care policy continues to play a very important role in medical practices, causing a need to be informed of health policy changes looming at the state, regional and national levels.

Urologists also need to understand why data registries are important and how they can participate in helping to gather patient care information. A new, evolving sub-specialty called transitional urology has developed to help care for this patient population. There is a need for the general urologist to be aware of and recognize the unique medical issues this patient population presents and what help is available for the patient and practitioner.

The aging of the American population is also having a profound impact on urology practices. Men’s health issues, particularly low testosterone, warrant a greater clinical focus, as it has been associated with significant comorbidities including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes and depression. Its effects on cardiovascular health have been put into question with recent studies. A need exists to understand the relationship between testosterone and cardiovascular health. IUA Meeting Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the IUA 2015 Annual Meeting, attendees should be able to:

1. Describe the health policy issues facing urologists in Indiana, the North Central Section region and nationwide.
2. Describe the concept and usefulness of data registries and how this will impact prostate cancer care in the future.
3. Describe the sub-specialty of transitional urology, the patients helped with this specialty and the unique challenges these patients face as adults.
4. Identify patients with BPS or IC and its etiology. Describe appropriate treatments available.
5. Describe the relationship between testosterone levels, replacement therapy and cardiovascular health.
6. Identify and understand common CAM practices for patients with inflammatory health conditions.
7. Describe the various urologic issues of patients globally and identify how to become involved.

Understanding Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal cord injuries can be complete or incomplete. If a spinal cord injury is complete, the cord can’t send signals from below the point of injury, leaving an individual paralyzed and unable to feel any sensations below his or her injury. When a spinal cord injury is incomplete, an individual will have limited mobility and sensation below the point of injury.

With immediate treatment the long term effects of a spinal cord injury can often be reduced. Common causes of spinal cord injuries can include trauma, such as a ski accident, car crash or sports and recreation. Spinal cord injuries can also be the result of a disease such as Spina Bifida or Multiple Sclerosis. Spinal cord injuries can be treated, but the treatment can vary depending on the location or severity of the injury. In most cases, treatment involves extensive physical therapy and rehabilitation.

The WALK-N-ROLL® for Spina Bifida is a family-friendly walk event being held to raise awareness about Spina Bifida and celebrate the accomplishments of the over 166,000 Americans living with it. All proceeds benefit the Spina Bifida Association of Central Florida’s programs and services for individuals living with Spina Bifida.

The name “WALK-N-ROLL” embodies a sense of inclusiveness and invokes the sense of empowerment which the Spina Bifida Community embraces in all that it does. A belief in a better tomorrow is our vision and the steps taken in this walk represent steps on a path to realizing that dream.

Participants can choose between a one-half mile or one mile path and we invite you to walk around these paths however many times you would like to do so. Children can come in their Halloween costumes and visit the exhibitors to get some treats. There will be activities and music, too.

About Quad Rugby, aka Murderball:

Therapists at Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Aquatic Therapy Center in Baltimore, MD, are researching aquatic therapy’s impact on patient populations with a spinal cord injury or other neurological impairment. Aquatics can be used as a treatment modality throughout the rehabilitation process.

The funds raised from the Kennedy Krieger Institute Baltimore Running Festival team will support their International Center for Spinal Cord Injury, where aggressive, innovative therapies help patients with spinal cord injuries recover. In addition, funds will support the training needs of patients with disabilities who participate in the event, through the purchase of adapted racing, training and therapy equipment. Recreational activities are often overlooked for individuals with disabilities, but Kennedy Krieger recognizes the important benefits of exercise for their patients, including improved health, self-esteem, social connections, and community reintegration.

With this charity team, they aim to increase the number of Kennedy Krieger patients who are able to participate in the races each year, open the door to improved physical fitness for those with disabilities, and fund research towards a cure for paralysis. Get involved here.

Georgia, Get Ready to Walk-N-Roll!

The Spina Bifida Association of Georgia’s 9th Walk-N-Roll will be held on September 28, 2014 on Georgia Tech’s Campus at 266 Ferst Drive NW, Atlanta GA 30332. There is free accessible parking at the event. Check-in starts at 2pm and the walk will begin at 3:30pm.

This year, SBAG is striving to continue with programming that helps:

• those living with Spina Bifida,
• families supporting those with Spina Bifida and
• the community caregivers that support people living with Spina Bifida.

SBAG is working to expand their Train the Trainers program statewide reaching out to more public schools.  Additionally, they are working with teens and young adults to help build independent living skills.  Also, they are trying to provide more care coordination via the phone with their contract nurse.  The money raised through the Walk-N-Roll will help grow these programs while SBAG continues with community outreach.

The Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida is a family-friendly, 1.375 mile walk event being held to raise awareness about Spina Bifida and celebrate the accomplishments of the families in Georgia who are affected by it.

Spina Bifida Statistics

Spina Bifida is the most common permanently-disabling birth defect. It affects eight births per day in the United States; currently an estimated 180,000 people in the United States are living with Spina Bifida. The Spina Bifida population in Georgia is estimated to be up to 3,000 children and adults.

People with Spina Bifida often face additional medical concerns, including:

It’s the announcement you’ve all been waiting for since June!  Today is the day that we announce the winners of the 2014 Get Out, Enjoy Life Photo Contest, held in conjunction with LASCI, Wheel:Life, and SPORTS ‘N SPOKES magazine.

Getting out and enjoying life was always a way of life for our 2014 GOEL first-place photo contest winner.

Regina “Reggie” Cake had a life many people only dream about. She had a husband who consistently made her smile, had the perfect job and almost always spent long weekends exploring new destinations on her Harley-Davidson.

“We traveled every chance we got, exploring the frontiers of Alaska to dude ranches in Montana,” says Cake. “We never slowed down and didn’t know the meaning of quiet weekend – That was not our style.”

But, in 2007, doctors discovered a small tumor growing on her cervical spinal cord. The mass was filling with fluid and causing radiating pain and residual loss of mobility in her arms that required immediate attention. Cake consulted with neurosurgeons and was quickly scheduled for spinal surgery to remove the mass.

“He [doctor] cut in the wrong place,” says Cake. “He placed a tube that was supposed to isolate the fluid from the tumor from entering my spinal-cord in the wrong place. To make a long, and painful story short, I was now paralyzed on my lower left side from the waist down.

Regina Cake hits the road on her adaptive, hot pink motorcycle!

As with many newly injured, Cake experienced the “pity parties” over the life she felt was now gone. Little did she know that while she was recovering, her husband Cliff Cake, was busy working on ways for them to continue to get out and enjoy life.

Mr. Cake worked diligently to build an accessible Harley-Davidson trike that would adapt to Cake’s needs and was safe to drive. He constructed a wheelchair rack, designed and relocated the foot shifter to the right side and constructed supports for her back and arms to help with stability.

“When I get on that awesome pink trike, built out of so much love, and the wind is in my face, I’m thankful to be alive,” says Cake. “I’m no longer in a wheelchair when I ride. I am not disabled when I ride. I am free of all limitations.”

Cake gets plenty of attention when she tools down the road, and rightly so. It’s not everyday that you see a pink Harley-Davidson with a pink wheelchair strapped to the back being driven by a lady in a pink helmet.

“When people hang out their car windows to take pictures and give me the thumbs up, I hope they see someone who has not given up on life despite my challenges,” says Cake. “Life in a wheelchair is not always easy, but it is not the end either.”

Today, Cake works regularly with the nonprofit A Spoonful of Sugar to help empower others through life’s challenges. She is a shining example of the “when life gives you lemons,” adage and advises people with and without disabilities to find their passion and never set limits on yourself or your abilities.

Cake’s winning photo was taken by her husband during a bike run through the Redwood National and State Park – one of their many journeys together.

For her first-place victory, Cake’s photo will land the cover of the 2014 September issue of SPORTS `N SPOKES. She will also receive a new wheelchair courtesy of our friends at Mike Box Wheelchairs and receive our 2014 GOEL Prize Pack consisting of a gnarly MV-1 back pack filled with gifts from all our GOEL 2014 participating sponsors.

Second and third-place winners

Second-Place: Eleven-year-old Cade Maynor’s favorite summer-time activity is swimming. But it was his rock-climbing photo that earned him a second-place win during the 2014 GOEL photo contest.

The Georgia resident recently enjoyed a day of climbing at Cherokee Rock Village in San Rock, Ala., reaching elevations of more than 40 feet. “I was getting out and enjoying life,” says Maynor. “It was a great experience learning how to climb the rocks without using your legs. The view was amazing … you could see over Lake Weiss.”

For his second-place victory, Maynor’s photo will appear in the Final Frame of the 2014 September issue of SPORTS `N SPOKES. He will also receive a one-year complimentary subscription to S`NS and a new pair of Morph Wheels courtesy of our friends at Maddak, Inc., as well as our 2014 GOEL Prize Pack consisting of a gnarly MV-1 back pack filled with gifts from all our GOEL 2014 participating sponsors.

Third-Place: For Jason McCue, getting out and enjoying life is second nature. The 38-year-old Canadian enjoys outdoor activities ranging from camping to wheelchair rugby, but his passion is surfing.

McCue’s journey has taken him to Australia, Mexico and parts of California in search of the perfect wave. His third-place winning photo was captured off the coast of Mexico in Punta Mita.

“A swell had been in for few days and growing,” says McCue. “I‘d been telling the boys I wanted to catch bigger waves. I convinced Tzahui Vazquez, (the guy beside me) and Cesar De La Rosa Flippen (the guy in the back), to join me but had to wait for them to close up their surf shop for the day.

So, sunset surfing it was. I remember thinking how big the waves were. I had butterflies in my stomach. The waves were 8 to 10 feet high. My photo was us waiting for a wave, and was super stoked to have caught 3 good ones that day.”

For his third-place victory, McCue’s photo will appear on the S`NS website’s Spokes of the Week. He will also receive a $200 gift certificate courtesy of At Home Medical, a complimentary copy of the September 2014 issue of S`NS as well as our 2014 GOEL Prize Pack consisting of a gnarly MV-1 back pack filled with gifts from all our GOEL 2014 participating sponsors.

SPORTS ‘N SPOKES, the sports and recreation magazine of the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), has teamed up with UroMed’s nonprofit program Life After Spinal Cord Injury (LASCI) and the online community, Wheel:Life,  to encourage people with disabilities to “Get Out & Enjoy Life This Summer”.
