Ahhh, Punta del Este is simply beautiful! La Mansa is one my favorite beaches. This is where the Río de la Plata meets the Atlantic Ocean and you can get the most stunning natural pool of Uruguay. It’s ideal for swimming and families with kids. Many cruisers arrive to Punta del Este during this season and the Gorriti island, located in front of La Mansa gets packed. It used to be a great place to enjoy the sea, despite the fact that water around the island is colder than at La Mansa, but recently, with so many boats in the area, the air feels full of fuel. It’s a pity. Anyway, you can still enjoy a marvelous beach without going to the island. Usually people gather here to see the sunset. I particularly like La Mansa during the morning, when there are no crowds.

Ahhh, Punta del Este es simplemente hermosa! Y La Mansa es una de mis playas favoritas. Donde el Río de la Plata se une con el Océano Atlántico y uno puede disfrutar de la más bellísima piscina natural de Uruguay. Es ideal para nadar e ir con niños. Muchos cruceros llegan a Punta del Este y se los puede ver desde allí junto a la isla Gorriti. La isla era un hermoso lugar para ir a pasar el día, pero ahora suele tener multitudes que llegan con sus lanchas y el aire queda cargado de combustible. Es una pena. De todas formas, todavía se puede disfrutar de La Mansa. En general, la gente la elige durante las tardes para ver el atardecer. Personalmente, la disfruto más por las mañanas, cuando no hay tanta gente.

Punta del Diablo has beautiful rocks shaped by the Atlantic Ocean. You can walk among the millenarian rocks of the Cerro Rivero or at the end of the Plaza de los Pescadores and find interesting shapes which make you admire the power of nature.

Punta del Diablo posee bellísimas rocas azotadas por el océano Atlántico. Uno puede caminar entre las piedras milenarias del cerro Rivero o sobre las de la punta de la Playa de los Pescadores y encontrar bellísimas formas creadas por el impacto del mar. Es realmente para maravillarse por la fuerza de la naturaleza.

This is the third consecutive year that I spent my vacations in Punta del Diablo. Each time I go there I like the place more and more. This season weather is doing great for beach lovers although it’s unfortunately a terrible dry season for the region and its agricultural activities.
Punta del Diablo is definitely a nature-oriented spot. You don’t need trendy clothes there. Just grab your bikinis, some shorts, t-shirts, a pair of jeans and a sweater for the night. You don’t even have to think about shoes. You will be on your bare feet almost all the time. The rest of the time, you’ll be wearing Havaianas or similar. Here is an article (in Spanish) published on El Observador newspaper a few days ago about this little fishing-surfing village.

Este es el tercer año consecutivo que paso mis vacaciones en Punta del Diablo. Cada vez que voy me gusta más y más el lugar. Este verano el clima es generoso con los amantes de la playa aunque hay una terrible sequía acechando a la región y a sus actividades agropecuarias.

Punta del Diablo es definitivamente un lugar para amantes de la naturaleza. No necesitan llevar mucha ropa arreglada allí. Basta con las mallas, unos shorts, remeras y un jean y un buzo para la noche. Ni siquiera pierdan tiempo pensando en los zapatos. Pasarán la mayor parte del tiempo descalzos, y el resto, usando ojotas. Aquí les dejo una nota publicada hace unos días en el diario El Observador sobre este pequeño poblado de pescadores y surfers.

This neighborhood of Montevideo was named after the Uruguayan writer José Enrique Rodó. Located next to the riverside beach Ramírez and downtown, it has a beautiful park with an artificial lake, an amusement park and a theater (Teatro de Verano). We can also find the old Park Hotel, built in 1909 by Guillermo West and turned into the headquarters of the Mercosur in 1997. More info here.

Este barrio de Montevideo se llama en honor al escritor uruguayo José Enrique Rodó. Ubicado frente a la rambla de la Playa Ramírez y cerca del centro, posee un parque hermoso con un lago artificial, un parque de diversiones y el Teatro de Verano. Allí también se encuentra el ex Parque Hotel, construido en 1909 por el arquitecto Guillermo West y que funciona como sede del Mercosur desde 1997. Más info aquí.

This abandoned station is located in front of the port of Montevideo. It was built by engineer Luis Andreoni and started operating on June 23, 1897. It is a national monument since 1975. More info here.

Pittamiglio Castle / Castillo Pittamiglio

The Pittamiglio Castle is located in Punta Trouville, Montevideo, by the riverside. It is like a fake castle, built in early 20th century by Humberto Pittamiglio, an architect and alchemist. The place is full of mystery, hidden charms and strange rooms; it houses the Asociación de Promotores Privados de la Construcción (an association), a cultural center and museum.

El Castillo Pittamiglio está ubicado en Punta Trouville, frente a la rambla de Montevideo. Esta especie de falso castillo fue construido a comienzos del siglo XX por Humberto Pittamiglio, un arquitecto y alquimista. El lugar es misterioso, presenta encantos escondidos y habitaciones extrañas. Allí funciona la Asociación de Promotores Privados de la Construcción, un centro cultural y un museo.

This monumental building by architect Jorge Herrán was built in 1923 by the port of Montevideo. Originally created for housing the port’s customs, now it is used by the Army. It was declared a historical monument in 1975.

El monumental edificio construido originalmente en 1923 para la Aduana de Montevideo es obra del arquitecto Jorge Herrán. Se ubica dentro del predio del puerto de Montevideo en la Rambla 25 de Agosto. Actualmente, es sede del Comando General de la Armada. Fue declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional en 1975.

Villa Biarritz

Villa Biarritz is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Montevideo. It reminds me a lot of Ipanema, in Rio de Janeiro. A fair takes place at the Parque Juan Zorrilla de San Martín on Tuesdays and Sundays. There, you can find anything from fruits to clothing, crafts, etc.

Villa Biarritz es uno de mis barrios favoritos de Montevideo. Me recuerda mucho a Ipanema, en Rio de Janeiro. Los martes y domingos funciona una feria en el Parque Juan Zorrilla de San Martín. Allí se puede conseguir desde frutas y verduras hasta ropa, artesanías, etc.

Gurvich and / y Torres Garcia Museums / Museos

I finally visited the Gurvich Museum. It is usually not mentioned in travel book-guides or travel sites, but for me, this is definitely a museum you can’t miss while in Montevideo (if you like art, of course). It is not allowed to take photographs. What a pity.
When going there, you can also step inside the Cathedral of the city, which is next door. That same evening, I visited the Joaquín Torres García Museum (photos), which is only two blocks from the other one. Smaller and not so well-kept, it houses an interesting collection of portraits of illustrious personalities, among other things.

Finalmente pude visitar el Museo Gurvich. Es sin dudas, una de las joyitas de Montevideo, no mencionada usualmente en las guías o sitios de viajes. Para mí, es uno de los lugares que no hay que dejar de visitar en Montevideo (si les gusta el arte, claro). Lástima que no permiten tomar fotografías. Al lado, se encuentra la Catedral de la ciudad, que también pueden visitar. Esa misma tarde fui al Museo Joaquín Torres García (fotos), que está a sólo dos cuadras de allí. Más pequeño y no tan bien mantenido, alberga una interesante colección de retratos de personalidades ilustres, entre otras cosas.

Located next to the borderline with Brazil, the fort of San Miguel offers a beautiful contrast of textures and colors. It is the only fort with a drawbridge which remains in the Rio de la Plata. It’s a nice visit from Punta del Diablo. Check out also the fortress of Santa Teresa.

Ubicado cerca de la frontera con Brasil, el Fuerte San Miguel es el único fortín con puente levadizo que subsiste en el Río de la Plata. Es un lindo paseo desde Punta del Diablo. También pueden visitar la fortaleza de Santa Teresa.

One of the things I enjoyed during my staying in Punta del Diablo was the diversity of skies I was able to observe, from spectacular sunsets and magnificent starry nights to stormy heavens as well as clouds in a variety of shapes you can rarely see in Buenos Aires.

Una de las cosas que disfruté durante mi estadía en Punta del Diablo fue la diversidad de cielos que pude observar, desde atardeceres espectaculares y maravillosas noches estrelladas hasta cielos tormentosos y una cantidad de nubes en las formas más variadas, que uno rara vez tiene la oportunidad de disfrutar en Buenos Aires.
