President Donald Trump’s escalating trade confrontation with Canada has erupted into a major economic showdown after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that his government will retaliate against Washington’s new 50% tariffs dollar for dollar.

Some products covered by the new tariffs had previously benefited from protections under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, better known as the USMCA.

That makes the new measures particularly significant.

The continental trade agreement was designed to provide businesses across North America with predictable access to the three countries’ markets. The latest confrontation is raising new questions about how much certainty the agreement can still provide while Washington, Ottawa and Mexico renegotiate parts of their economic relationship.

The new U.S. duties cover approximately 5% of Canada’s exports to the United States, according to Reuters.

That percentage may appear relatively modest, but the economic relationship between the neighboring countries is enormous and deeply interconnected.

Manufacturers routinely move materials and components across the border before a finished product arrives at consumers. Agricultural producers rely on continental supply networks. Retailers sell products manufactured or processed on both sides.

Tariffs therefore do not necessarily stop at the border.

Carney made clear that Canada would not absorb Washington’s tariffs without answering.

Some industry observers have also raised questions about Overton’s limited experience running an organization comparable in size and complexity to the FDA.

Overton would replace former FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, who resigned in May after approximately 13 months in the position.

The United States national debt has surpassed $40 trillion for the first time, signifying another historic milestone in the federal government’s rapidly growing financial obligations.

Treasury Department figures showed total public debt outstanding hitting roughly $40.047 trillion, according to data reported Wednesday.

That total consists of about $32.266 trillion in debt held by the public and approximately $7.782 trillion in intragovernmental holdings.

The milestone arrives less than five months after the country’s debt reached $39 trillion.

U.S. Debt Has More Than Doubled in Less Than a Decade

America’s debt burden has expanded dramatically over the last decade.

Total federal debt stood at approximately $19.95 trillion when Donald Trump began his first term as president in January 2017. It has now more than doubled.

Part of the increase came from extraordinary borrowing during the COVID-19 pandemic under both Trump and former President Joe Biden. Long-term structural problems—including chronic budget deficits, tax policy and rising spending on major federal programs—have also contributed.

ABC says pressure from President Donald Trump’s administration has already affected decisions about what appears on the network, escalating an extraordinary legal battle involving Disney, the Federal Communications Commission and the First Amendment.

Disney and ABC filed a lawsuit seeking to stop an early FCC review of broadcast licenses belonging to eight Disney-owned television stations.

ABC alleges that the scrutiny has created fear of government retaliation and has caused the network to rethink programming choices involving politicians and political coverage.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr rejects that accusation and says the agency’s decisions will be based on the law and the factual record.

Disney and ABC Challenge an Early FCC License Review

At the center of the case are broadcast licenses for eight Disney-owned local stations, including stations serving major markets such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston.

Those licenses were not scheduled to expire until between 2028 and 2031.

When Trump delivered a July 16 prime-time speech concerning election security, ABC did not carry the address on its broadcast network. It instead streamed the speech live.

The network’s lawsuit says it considered the possibility of administration retaliation when deciding how to handle the address. Trump later called for licenses connected with both ABC and NBC to be revoked after the networks declined to broadcast the speech live.

Carr disputes Disney and ABC’s portrayal of the investigation.

He told Reuters that the FCC has an obligation to ensure broadcasters comply with public-interest requirements attached to their use of the public airwaves.

Carr also rejected the allegation that his agency is violating Disney’s free-speech rights and said licensing decisions would be made according to the facts and law.

That leaves the courts to address a much larger question: whether the FCC is legitimately exercising its regulatory authority or, as Disney alleges, using that authority in a way that pressures a news organization over its editorial decisions.

Patrick Crusius, who is accused of murdering 23 people, claimed that the whole reason he went into that particular Walmart was that he was hungry.

The man had reportedly gotten lost while driving around in El Paso and decided to head over to the nearby Walmart. It was there that he committed his murderous spree, taking the lives of 23 and injuring dozens of others.

The man reportedly even ate while he was inside the store and was still unarmed. He came back not long after, having cased the place and decided on a course of action.

The alleged killer reportedly took around 10 hours to drive from his home to El Paso, and as soon as he reached the place, he found himself lost in a neighborhood. He then started to make his way to Walmart.

Police have also refused to comment on whether Walmart was specifically targeted or if the location was chosen more randomly. Authorities are still investigating that angle and trying to determine the full extent of the events that have transpired.

Details about the case have been coming out slowly, and the world will likely find even more chilling revelations in the coming years.

The attack went down in a period marked by several other similar horrific acts, prompting a wave of outrage from many across the country and the world. Many have also expressed their sympathies to the victims of the attack and their families and friends.

The trial for the suspected El Paso Walmart shooter is not expected to take place before another two years.

Joe Spencer, a lawyer for the alleged mass shooter in state and federal court, stated: “I don’t anticipate that this case is going to be ready for trial for at least a couple of years.”

Kristen Lynn Boyle, a 35-year-old female high school psychologist from California has reportedly been arrested after it came to light that she had had sex with a boy — apparently a student — inside a classroom of the school where she worked.

The incident allegedly took place several months ago in April and was uncovered after a lengthy investigation into the woman’s work. She has subsequently been charged with statutory rape.

Police have noted that the woman has used a position of authority over the boy and exploited him, adding that she was specifically working on mental health issues, which further put her in a position to manipulate her students and abuse them.

Authorities went on to explain that this kind of betrayal of trust will not be tolerated, and they were treating the case very seriously due to the occupation of the woman and her relation to the student.

Reports indicate that she could be imprisoned for up to three years if she was convicted. There are no reports indicating what her involvement with the boy was before the incident, with some speculation that she might have been grooming him for some time before she actually took action.
