A handful of workers had congregated directly beneath a hole in the ceiling inside one of the tournament shops as they tried to stop water from flowing out of a broken pipe and ruining thousands of pounds worth of merchandise below.

This was not a surprising sight. Upon entering Arthur Ashe Stadium this year, fans were greeted by some ominous signs: “Pardon our appearance while we write the next chapter of Arthur Ashe Stadium.” The tournament’s appearance, it must be said, was hideous. Inside the corridors and rooms at one of the biggest sporting events in the world, it felt like its main building was falling apart.
Continue reading... US Open Tennis 2026 Aryna Sabalenka Carlos Alcaraz US Open tennis Tennis Sport Mon, 14 Sep 2026 19:48:31 GMT https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2026/sep/14/us-open-2026-worst-grand-slam-tournament-in-recent-memory Photograph: Olga Fedorova/EPA Photograph: Olga Fedorova/EPA Photograph: Olga Fedorova/EPA Tumaini Carayol 2026-09-14T19:48:31Z https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2026/sep/14/ben-shelton-us-open-2026-tennis
Alexander Zverev was simply too good for the home hope at the US Open on Sunday. Andy Roddick’s record may stand for some time to come

On a Sunday afternoon set up for Ben Shelton to play national hero, the US Open final debutant suffered a four-set defeat to Alexander Zverev, a result that deflated the partisans at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The match compounded Shelton’s miserable head-to-head record against the German, who claimed a second career grand slam title without having to face final bosses Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz. The defeat also extended a long drought – the last win by an American man at a grand slam was Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open, when Shelton was still a month off his first birthday.

After the final, Shelton wore a hangdog expression as he thanked his team and the capacity crowd in New York, tucking the silver runner-up tray under his arm as if shunted off to high school detention. “Disappointed with how today went,” he said in his press conference afterward. “Excited with the progress that I feel that I’ve made. But, yeah, this one stings 100%.”
Continue reading... US Open Tennis 2026 US Open tennis Tennis US sports Sport Andy Roddick Mon, 14 Sep 2026 13:12:18 GMT https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2026/sep/14/ben-shelton-us-open-2026-tennis Photograph: Cristóbal Herrera/EPA Photograph: Cristóbal Herrera/EPA Photograph: Cristóbal Herrera/EPA Andrew Lawrence at Flushing Meadows 2026-09-14T13:12:18Z https://www.theguardian.com/sport/gallery/2026/sep/14/best-pictures-from-us-open-tennis-2026
We take a look at some of our favourite snapshots from New York as Elena Rybakina and Alexander Zverev both triumphed in the final grand slam of the year
Continue reading... US Open Tennis 2026 US Open tennis Tennis US sports Sport Photography Mon, 14 Sep 2026 10:46:00 GMT https://www.theguardian.com/sport/gallery/2026/sep/14/best-pictures-from-us-open-tennis-2026 Photograph: Charly Triballeau/AFP/Getty Images Photograph: Charly Triballeau/AFP/Getty Images Photograph: Charly Triballeau/AFP/Getty Images Steven Bloor 2026-09-14T10:46:00Z https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2026/sep/13/alexander-zverev-wins-us-open-four-sets-ben-shelton

No 1 seed wins 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2

American’s hopes dashed in tense final

For a passing moment at the end of a rugged third set, hope sprung anew for Ben Shelton. He had been outserved and outplayed for nearly three hours, but at 6-5 in the third set, one game from defeat, the American finally broke through. He burst into the return game finally pounding his forehand freely and he willed himself into an unexpected fourth set.

After he had finished pumping his fist, cupping his ear to the crowd and admirably trying to initiate a drastic momentum shift, the next sequence was most revealing. Shelton opened the fourth set with a shaky game, immediately losing his serve at the start of the set. She had been completely overpowered by her opponent, a strange and unusual feeling for such a powerful player, and she was seething. Shelton credited his grandmother with ensuring that his father, Bryan, made it as a top professional, becoming one of a small group of Black men on the tour. “My dad lost his mom earlier this year and she’s the reason he was able to play tennis,” he said. “Without her, there’s no Ben Shelton standing here today. So this one is for her.”

Shelton stands on the verge of history. On Sunday, he will attempt to become the first Black American man to win the US Open singles title since Arthur Ashe in 1968, a feat he will attempt inside the stadium named after Ashe. Shelton would also be the first Black man to win any grand slam singles title since Yannick Noah at Roland Garros in 1983, and the third overall. Rybakina congratulated Aryna Sabalenka on a strong fortnight and noted that it was the first time she had beaten the Belarusian. For the record: that would be a colossal unforced error.
Continue reading... US Open Tennis 2026 Carlos Alcaraz Sport Tennis US Open tennis US sports Novak Djokovic John McEnroe Fri, 11 Sep 2026 08:00:05 GMT https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2026/sep/11/us-open-five-set-tennis-shelton-alcaraz-late-night-matches Photograph: Julian Finney/Getty Images Photograph: Julian Finney/Getty Images Photograph: Julian Finney/Getty Images Andrew Lawrence at Flushing Meadows 2026-09-11T08:00:05Z https://www.theguardian.com/sport/live/2026/sep/10/us-open-womens-semifinals-sabalenka-pegula-gauff-rybakina-live-updates

Sabalenka on brink of trifecta after blitzing Pegula

Rybakina rallies past Gauff to reach first US Open final

First set: Sabalenka 1-0 *Pegula (*denotes next server)

A strong start for Sabalenka, who wins the first game with ease.
