Netrebko named musician of the year

NEW YORK - Russian soprano Anna Netrebko has been named musician of the year for 2008 by a classical music publication in which the honorees during the past half-century included Leonard Bernstein, Igor Stravinsky and Vladimir Horowitz.

Netrebko, 36, will grace the cover of the 2008 Musical America International Directory of the Performing Arts, often referred to in the business as the "bible" of the industry, with its comprehensive data bases and contact listings.

Other 2008 winners announced Tuesday by Musical America: Kaija Saariaho of Finland for composer of the year, the Atlanta Symphony's Robert Spano for conductor of the year, 80-year-old pianist Charles Rosen for instrumentalist and Chanticleer for ensemble. All will receive their awards at a ceremony at Lincoln Center on Dec. 13.

The awards date to 1960, the first year the International Directory of the Performing Arts was published.

"Dancing with the Stars" tour to stop in Hampton

The 37-year-old chef and cookbook author made the announcement on NBC's "Today Show," where she serves as a contributing correspondent. The baby will be the couple's first child.

Russell Crowe plans to be baptized

NEW YORK - Russell Crowe, who is 43, says he's planning to be baptized. "I'd like to do it this year," the Oscar-winning actor tells Men's Journal. "My mom and dad decided to let my brother and me make our own decisions about God when we got to the right age. I started thinking recently, 'If I believe it is important to baptize my kids, why not me?'"

Crowe says the baptism will take place in the Byzantine chapel he built at his country ranch in Australia for his wedding to Danielle Spencer in 2003. The couple have two sons, 3-year-old Charlie and 1-year-old Tennyson.

"It is consecrated and everything," Crowe says in the magazine's December issue, now on newsstands. "Charlie was baptized there. And when Tennyson gets baptized there, I will, too."

Crowe a reformed Aussie bad boy with a reputation for throwing temper tantrums is more spiritual than people may think.

"I do believe there are more important things than what is in the mind of a man," he says. "There is something much bigger that drives us all. I'm willing to take that leap of faith."

Crowe, who won an Academy Award in 2001 for "Gladiator," co-stars with Denzel Washington in "American Gangster," a Universal Pictures release, which is now in theaters. His screen credits also include "A Beautiful Mind" and "The Insider."

Jennifer Lopez has kept her glossy pink lips sealed during recent public appearances, dancing around questions from interviewers wanting to know if she's singing for two.

But her bump speaks loud and clear.

After Lopez made an appearance on MTV's "Total Request Live" on October 8 to promote her new CD, "Brave," cohost Damien Fahey told Us that her condition was obvious.

"I've been around a lot of pregnant women. She walked around like a pregnant woman, sat like a pregnant woman, and stood like a pregnant woman," he says. "If I were a betting man, I'd definitely bet she was pregnant."

Indeed, Us has confirmed from multiple sources that Lopez is about four months pregnant with her first child. Or children -- a source tells Us Lopez's mother, Guadalupe, 61, "is proudly telling people she's having twins."

The 38-year-old singer-actress, who has long expressed her desire to have both career and kids, is ecstatic about the news.

"It's a dream come true," a Lopez source tells Us. "She and Marc are over the moon."

Pregnancy news is especially sweet for Lopez, whom insiders believed was unable to carry a child at all. "[Conceiving] was a struggle for her," says a source.

Seconds another, "This pregnancy is a miracle."

Anthony, 39, who has three children from prior relationships, has been equally eager to expand his brood.

When Anthony was recently asked to imagine his response to his wife being pregnant, he said, "It's going to be me in handcuffs, because I will run down the street, screaming like a madman."
