Boeing Classic Champions Tour Preview:

The Boeing Classic is a professional golf tournament on the Champions Tour, found in 2005. The 54-hole event is played yearly in late August in Snoqualmie, Washington, east of Seattle. The contest was aristocratic the "Boeing Greater Seattle Classic" for its first two years. Boeing is the main sponsor of the tournament.

It is held at the TPC Snoqualmie Ridge, a private route designed by Jack Nicklaus which opened for play in 1999. The course is 40 km east of Seattle at the foothills of the Cascade Range, and varies in elevation from 175 to265 m above sea level, with the 18th green at 227 m.

Senior Players Championship:

The Senior Players Championship is one of the five major championships on golf's Champions Tour. Different the U.S. Senior Open, the Senior PGA Championship and the Senior British Open, it is not documented as a major by the European Seniors Tour, and is not part of that tour's schedule. The opening event was in 1983. The lower age limit is 50, which is the standard limit for men's senior expert golf tournaments. The winner gains entry into the following season's The Players Championship. In recent years, the event has hosted the Larry Gilbert Memorial Pro-Am, which gave local junior golfers the chance to play a nine whole scramble with the professional competitors. It is unknown whether or not the Pro-Am continued at the tournament's new location.

The PGA Championship (sometimes referred to as the U.S. PGA Championship outside of the United States) is a yearly golf tournament conduct by the PGA of America as fraction of the PGA Tour. It is one of the four major championships in men's professional golf, and is the golf season's final major, usually played in mid-August, usually four weeks after The Open Championship. (It was advanced a week in 2007 and 2008 because of local scheduling conflicts.) Due to its difference as the season's last major, the PGA Championship is nicknamed "Glory's Last Shot". It is an official money event on the PGA Tour, the European Tour, and the Japan Golf Tour, with a purse of $7.5 million in 2008.

In line with the other majors, winning "The PGA" gives a golfer several privileges which make his career much safer, if he is not by now one of the elite players of the sport. PGA champions are mechanically invite to play in the other three majors Masters, U.S. Open, and the Open Championship for the after that five years, and are exempt from qualify for the PGA Championship for existence. They also receive association on the PGA and European Tours for the following five season and invitations to The Players Championship for five years. The PGA Championship has been held at a large number of venues, some of the early ones now quite obscure, but currently it is usually staged by one of a small group of celebrated courses, each of which has also hosted several other most important events.

The World Series of Golf preview:

Up until 1998, there was a contest called the World Series of Golf, which was also played at Firestone Country Club for a lot of years, and sponsor by NEC. It was founded as a four man invitational event in 1962, but later became a PGA Tour event, and finally one of the most important events on the Tour. For many years a victory in the World Series of Golf gave a golfer a 10-year exemption on the Tour, which was the same as was granted for a victory in a main finals at that time, and twice as long as is given even for winning a major now. The field consisted of the winners of all the high status men's professional golf tournaments around the world in the previous twelve months. This was quite different from the criteria for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational listed above, but produced much the same sort of global field.

The World Golf Championships is a group of four annual events for male professional golfers created by the International alliance of PGA Tours, with a fifth to be added in 2012. All four current World Golf Championships (WGC) tournaments are official money events on the European Tour and the Japan Golf Tour, and officially authorized by the Asian Tour, Sunshine Tour, PGA Tour of Australasia, and PGA Tour. Three of the four are official money events on the PGA Tour; the HSBC Champions does not offer official prize money on that tour. Reno Tahoe Open tour preview:

The Reno Tahoe Open is a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour. Found in 1999, it is played annually in July, south of Reno, Nevada. The tournament is detained at the Montrêux Golf and Country Club, located midway between Reno and Lake Tahoe. The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1997; its average elevation is 5,600 feet (1,707 m) on top of sea level. In 2007 the Reno Tahoe Open gained its first title sponsor, the Legends at Sparks Marina. In 2010, the tournament changed its name back to the Reno Tahoe Open.

Until 2010, the tournament has taken place every year in the same week as the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August. For its first three years, it had a full field of 156 players, while the World Golf Championship event had a field of about 40. When the WGC event expanded to about 80 players in 2002, the Reno-Tahoe Open's field was reduced to 132 players. In 2010 the PGA Tour announced that the Reno-Tahoe Open would now occur concurrent to the British Open and take place in July. In 2010, the Reno Tahoe Open occurred from July 15-18.

The 2010 purse was $3,000,000 with the winner, Matt Bettencourt, earning the champion's prize of $540,000.

The U.S. Senior Open is one of the major championships in men's senior golf. It was first played in 1980 and is administered by the United States Golf Association (USGA) and is recognized as a major championship by both the Champions Tour and the European Seniors Tour. Initially the lower age limit was 55, but it is now 50, which is the standard limit for men's senior professional golf tournaments. The event is open to amateurs but it is dominated by professionals. It has been played on several different courses. In 2010, the prize fund was $2.6 million, with $470,000 awarded to the champion, Bernhard Langer. Allen Doyle became the oldest U.S. Senior Open Champion in 2006, winning two weeks before his 58th birthday.[1] The total purse was the highest of any senior tour event until the Posco E&C Songdo Championship, a new Champions Tour event held in South Korea, launched in 2010 with a $3 million purse. However, the first prize in the U.S. Senior Open remains the highest on the Champions Tour (first prize in the Korean event is $450,000). Like other senior majors, players must walk the course unless they receive a medical exemption to use a cart. Winners gain entry into the following season's U.S. Open.

History:

The practice green at the 2008 Women's British Open held at Sunning dale Golf Club.

The Women's British Open was established by the Ladies' Golf Union in 1976. It was intended to serve as the women's equivalent of The Open. At first, it was difficult for the organizers to get the most prestigious courses to agree to host the event, with the exception of the Royal Birkdale Golf Club, which hosted it twice during its early days in “1982 and 1986”. After almost folding in 1983, the contest was held at the best of the "second-tier" courses, including Woburn Golf and Country Club for 10 straight years, from 1987 through 1996, as well as in 1984 and 1999.

Through 1993, the contest was an official stop only on the Ladies European Tour. It became an bureaucrat stop on the LPGA Tour as well in 1994, which increased both the quality of the field and the event's prestige. It has been an official LPGA major since 2001, when it took the place of the du Maurier Classic on the LPGA's list of majors. In 2005, the starting field size was increased to 150, but only the low 65 survive the cut after the second round. In both 2007 and 2008 the prize fund was £1,050,000. Starting in 2009, the prize fund changed from being fixed in pounds to U.S. dollars, and is now $2.5 million.

It has been an official event on the PGA Tour since 1995, which means that the prize money won in The British Open by PGA Tour members is included on the official money list. In addition, all British Open Championships before 1995 have been retroactively classified as PGA Tour wins, and the list of leading winners on the PGA Tour has been adjusted to reflect this. The European Tour has recognized The British Open as an official event since its first official season in 1972 and it is also an official money event on the Japan Golf Tour.

Oosthuizen cruised to a seven-shot win last year to gather his first major championship title. It was just the second time in nine majors that Oosthuizen had completed the cut. The South African handled St. Andrews with four sub par rounds en route to his big win. Oosthuizen finished at 16-under, well ahead of Lee Westwood, who closed with three straight rounds in the 70s. Oosthuizen won the Africa Open back in January and tied for ninth at the U.S. Open, but has just one other top-10 finish this season. He has missed the cut in four of his last seven starts worldwide. With three-time British Open winner Tiger Woods and three-time major champion Vijay Singh not in the field this week, the finals are more wide open than ever. World No. 1 Luke Donald is one of six players on the PGA and European Tours with more than one title this season. Donald's win at the rain-shortened Scottish Open was his third of the year on the European Tour, the most by any player on either tour. Masters champion Charl Schwartzel is a two-time winner on the European circuit. Nick Watney, Steve Stricker, Bubba Watson and Mark Wilson all have two wins on the PGA Tour. Stricker birdied the final two holes on Sunday to win the John Deere Classic for the third straight year.

Viking Classic History:

The Viking Classic is a golf tournament on the PGA Tour named for its main sponsor, Viking Range Corporation. It is played annually in Madison, Mississippi, and as of 2011 is played in July. The tournament is held at the Annandale Golf Club. From “1968 to 1993” it was played at the Hattiesburg Country Club in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Known as the Magnolia State Classic from 1968 from side to side 1985 with notable winners counting Roger Maltbie, Craig Stadler, and Payne Stewart, the tournament was re-named the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic in 1986. In the past, this tournament was generally played opposite of a major or limited field tournament. It later became part of the Fall Series, a group of events held after The Tour Championship, before returning to its former status as an alternate event in 2011. In either case, the leading players in men's professional golf rarely participate. Until 1994, it was played opposite The Masters and then opposite the British Open in the mid-90s. More recently, it played opposite various World Golf Championships and The Tour Championship. From 2007 to 2010, it generally played opposite the major team events involving PGA Tour players, namely the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup. In 2011, it will return into the PGA Tour regular season opposite The Open Championship.

Jim Gallagher Jr. will not play in the Viking Classic for the first time in more than 15 years. Tournament director Randy Watkins says the five-time PGA Tour winner has withdrawn from the tournament because of conflicting Champions Tour events. The Viking Classic is set for July 14-17 in Madison at Annandale Golf Club. Watkins says Gallagher, a rookie on the 50-year-old-plus tour, has qualified for two senior major championships played on consecutive weeks after the Viking — the Senior British Open and the Senior U.S. Open. Gallagher's wife, Cissye, tells The Greenwood Commonwealth that Jim has to leave that Sunday for the Senior British Open but he plans to be at tourney some of it before he leaves.

Invitational status

The AT&T National is one of only five tournaments given "invitational" status by the PGA Tour,and consequently it has a reduced field of only 120 players (as opposed to most full-field open tournaments with a field of 156 players). The other four tournaments with invitational status are the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Verizon Heritage, the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, and the Memorial Tournament. Invitational tournaments have smaller fields (between 120 and 132 players), and have more freedom than full-field open tournaments in determining which players are eligible to participate in their event, as invitational tournaments are not required to fill their fields using the PGA Tour Priority Ranking System. Furthermore, unlike full-field open tournaments, invitational tournaments do not offer open qualifying (aka Monday qualifying).

US Open Championships History:

The first U.S. Open was played on October 4, 1895, on a nine whole route at the Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island. It was a 36-hole rivalry and was played in a single day. Ten professional and one amateur entered. The victor was a 21-year-old Englishman named Horace Rawlins, who had arrived in the U.S. in January that year to take up a position at the host club. He received $150 cash out of a prize fund of $335, plus a $50 gold medal; his club received the Open Championship Cup trophy, which was presented by the USGA. In the beginning, the tournament was dominated by experienced British players until 1911, when John J. McDermott became the first native-born American winner. American golfers soon begin to succeed regularly and the tournament evolved to become one of the four majors. U.S. Open cup at the 2008 PGA Golf Show. Since 1911, the title has been won approximately exclusively by players from the United States. Since 1950, players from only six countries other than the United States have won the championship, most notably South Africa, which has won five times since 1965. A streak of four consecutive non-American winners occurred from 2004 to 2007 for the first time since 1910. These four groups of actors, South African Retief Goosen (2004), New Zealander Michael Campbell (2005), Australian Geoff Ogilvy (2006) and Argentine Ángel Cabrera (2007), are all from countries in the Southern Hemisphere. Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell (2010) became the first European player to win the event since Tony Jacklin of England in 1970.

The 2011 US Open to be broadcast live on Super Sport returns to the Congressional Country Club for only the second time in its history, a venue that will evoke reminiscences of 1997 for Ernie Els.

In 1997, with the US Open being played at the Congressional Country Club, Els defeated Colin Montgomerie by one stroke to win his second US Open Championship, and it’s this memory that will be lingering in his mind as he attempts to win for the third time in Maryland.

With the U.S. Open in municipality this week at Congressional for the first time since 1997 and the recent release of Adam Schupak’s excellent book on former PGA Tour official Deane Beman, entitled Deane Beman: Golf’s Driving Force, we had an electronic Q&A with Mr. Beman about the importance of the region to him and the tour.

DEANE BEMAN: The PGA TOUR has a rich the past in the metropolitan Washington area. The Capitol City Open was played in the 50's, Congressional hosted a Tour event in the late 50's, and, of course, the U. S. Open was first played at Columbia Country Club, I believe in 1921, and Congressional will host its third Open Championship.

When I became Commissioner, the PGA TOUR headquarters was located in Bethesda for five years. The modern history of the PGA TOUR began in Bethesda, Md.

RB: Congressional was a part of the PGA Tour schedule for years, long before the AT&T National. What’s your view on having the Open back here?

DB: Any community is enhanced by hosting a U.S. Open. A U.S. Open coming to the same course for the third time only punctuates its status in golf.

RB: You had every intention of regulating equipment up until and through the lawsuit with Karsten. What’s your view of the job the USGA has done in stemming the tide of equipment’s influence?

DB: The USGA has taken the first step in its attempt to rein in technology with the groove rule two years ago. I hope it’s only the first step.

RB: You staked his job on the ability to identify and construct a course to host the PGA Tour’s biggest event. How does Deane view the USGA’s current rota of courses?

DB: The USGA’s policy of going back to the traditional courses has contributed to the remarkable success of this event. Recently the USGA has added some modern courses to the rota which continues to enhance the event.

RB: You have roots in this town and it seems golf has always found a way to have strong roots here, too. What are your thoughts on the importance of the capital area to the game?

DB: Just as much as the PGA TOUR’s playing events in the Washington, D.C. area and major championships going there periodically, the numerous Presidents have embraced the values of golf; and that has contributed just as much to the game as the competitions in the Washington area.

RB: What is your favorite personal D.C. golf memory?

DB: I have two. I played my first tournament at Congressional at age 13 and shot 113 — so much for lucky thirteen.

She has won seven doubles titles on the Tour, often in tandem with Errani. Currently, Vinci is ranked No. 37 in singles and No, 41 in doubles. Coached by Francesco Cino, she lives and trains in Palermo. Born in 1983, Vinci first started training at the age of six, rising a passion for the serve-and-volley tennis. Prior to her success on the mature tour, she enjoyed a Girls' Doubles victory at Roland Garros with Flavia Pennetta in 1999. Vinci has enjoyed a stellar Federation Cup record of 17-1. She has won all 16 of her doubles rubbers, and only misplaced once in singles, to Nicole Vaidisova of Czech state in 2005.

With affordable tickets giving access to not one, but two of these top matches, the Gloucester crowds can look forward to cheering on a host of rugby stars during the Sunday afternoon of competitive action. England supporters in particular will be keen to see their national team defend their 2010 victory in the ninth annual competition named after Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, with patriotic fans expected to travel from across the country to see the sporting spectacle. Paul Vaughan, the RFU’s Business Operations Director and a member of the Churchill Cup Executive, said: ‘With no summer tour for England this June, this is a great opportunity for rugby fans to see quality international teams on their doorstep.’ With tickets for both matches costing from £5 for juniors and £13 for adults, expect an electric atmosphere from a Kingsholm Stadium packed full of singing supporters at this Churchill Cup Double Header. Incoming Bath Rugby lock Dave Attwood admits it is far from a certainty that he has made it into Martin Johnson's preliminary World Cup squad. Attwood says there have been few indications from the England team manager about who will make the cut on June 20. The second row, who is currently playing for England Saxons as he seeks to force his way into Johnson's plans, said: "It's a bit hush-hush at the moment, to be honest. "There are certain things you expect but there's still a lot to play for and everyone believes the World Cup squad has not been fully decided yet. "There are opportunities for people all over the place but the only way for people to take that opportunity is to win games like the one on Saturday against Tonga. "You never want to take time off, so you're always going to work hard to be involved in the games. It's great to have the opportunity to stake a claim." The Saxons host Tonga at Kingsholm – the ground Attwood is leaving in order to further his career at The Rec. The 24-year-old is well aware that future matches at Kingsholm are unlikely to bring the warm welcome of the last two seasons but he is relishing the prospect of playing in Gloucester at the weekend with the Saxons. "I'm really excited, Kingsholm's a wonderful stadium and I've had two great years there as a Gloucester player," he said. "I'll always relish playing at Kingsholm, so it will be exciting to do that in an England shirt. "Obviously, once you return in the shirt of a different club you're going to get a bit of stick, but I guess that's fair enough! "That won't happen for a while yet, though, so this is all about hopefully getting another chance to play at a great ground and helping the Saxons into another Churchill Cup final."

For most South Africans this will be the large match of the weekend as it is a replay of last year's Super 14 final. The stats show that the Stormers beat the Bulls 10-38 in the regular season match last year but that consequence doesn't really count as the Bulls rested almost their entire squad as the next round was the play offs and they had already sealed a home semi and possible home final. The reality is that the Stormers have not really beaten the Bulls since 2004 and a year earlier in 2003 since they won at Loftus. The result is that seven of the Bulls' stalwarts have not lost a Super Rugby game against a fellow South African side in 13 outings. The last time Bulls centre Wynand Olivier, scrumhalf Fourie du Preez, flyhalf Morne Steyn, No 8 Pierre Spies, lock Danie Rossouw and prop Gurthro Steenkamp felt the dissatisfaction of losing a South African derby was 13 games ago, against the Sharks on 1 March 2008. Victor Matfield boasts an even better record. The defensive champions' captain and lock last lost to a South African team back in February of 2007, when his team suffered a 17-3 loss to The Sharks in Durban. Matfield missed the Super Rugby season in 2008, when he was playing club rugby for Toulon in France. These seven players have been instrumental in the new success of the Pretoria team, charming back to back Super 14 titles in 2009 and 2010. Their charming streak against South African opposition includes a victory against the Stormers in last year's memorable final in Soweto. Only one player in the Stormers squad for 2011, veteran fullback Conrad Jantjes, knows that winning Super Rugby feeling at Loftus playing against the Bulls and unfortunately for the Stormers Jantjies will miss this game due to injury (Achilles strain). Two of these games - the 14-75 massacre in 2005 and the 12- 49 loss in 2007, still grade as two of the Stormers' biggest ever defeats. In 2009 they fared much better, losing by only 10-14 in Pretoria. Overall the Stormers have a better win/loss ratio over the Bulls at 7 wins and 6 losses with one draw but it's the recent history that make for terrible reading if you are a Stormers fan. On average when these two teams meet the Bulls score 27 points against the Stormers who score 23 points against the Bulls when they meet. While the Stormers are still unbeaten after three matches they have relied solely on Peter Grant's boot in their last two matches and have not scored a try since their first match. To beat the Bulls they will have to start scoring tries and they can't rely on Schalk Burger as he will also miss the match due to injury. The Bulls have shown glimpses of last season's form but they have not quite hit gear yet. In their last match they were beaten by the Highlanders which ended their run which stretched back to the 12th of Apr 2008. LPGA Tour 2011 - LPGA State Farm Classic - Panther Creek Country Club :: Springfield, Illinois, USA

The LPGA Tour is back on course in Springfield, Illinois for the 34th LPGA State Farm Classic at Panther Creek Country Club. Ji Young Oh income to defend her first Tour success, which she won in a playoff over Yani Tseng. Oh is at present ninth on the LPGA money list thanks to her victory a few weeks ago at the Sybase Classic. She will have to face one of the strongest fields in the 34-year history of this event, as 19 of the top 20 players in the world are on hand to racist the trophy. This event made headlines last year after Michelle Wie was disqualified for not signing her scorecard. Wie will be back to avenge that mishap and try to land her first professional trophy. Also, looking for their first victory in 2009 are Paula Creamer, Suzann Pettersen and In-Kyung Kim. Those looking to add to their 2009 trophy case are Cristie Kerr, Pat Hurst, Angela Stanford, Jiyai Shin, Karrie Webb, Brittany Lincicome and Tseng. Designed by Hale Irwin, the Panther Creek course is a 6,539 yard, par-72 track that was developed in 1990 and has played host to this event the past three year.

Charitable organization in the greater Hickory area now have a new way to lift money through the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn presented by Kia Motors, it was announced today. The PGA Champions Tour event is set for June 6-12, 2011 at Rock Barn Golf & Spa. As part of the Together Anything’s possible charity challenge, Hickory area charities can sell tickets and ticket packages for the ninth annual Greater Hickory Classic with 100 percent of the ticket proceeds going in a straight line to the charity that sold them. In its eight-year history, the Greater Hickory Classic has donated more than $1 Million to Hickory-area charities including nearly $20,000 donated to charities just through ticket sales last year. Any registered 501(c) 3 charitable organization is eligible to join the 2011 charity challenge to raise money through the sale of Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn tickets. “We are proud of the funds the Greater Hickory Classic has raised for our local charities,” executive tournament director Jim Correll said. “Through the ‘Together anything’s Possible’ charity challenge, we are offering organizations a way to increase donations despite an economy that continues to have its challenges. With our new June tournament date, we could very well have record-setting crowds. Tens of thousands of people will be buying tournament tickets, and by purchasing them through one of our charities, our fans can support the tournament and their favorite charity at the same time. That’s a win for everyone.”
