Even if I am asked, "better, whey proteins or soy milk is?" ... My question is, once again, "better for what?" Each of the excellent sources of protein, and have their advantages. Obesity and Diabetes: It Doesn’t Have to Be.

In October 2008, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control reported that the incidence of newly diagnosed diabetes nearly doubled in the last 10 years. The human and economic cost of diabetes, in the U.S. and around the world, is rapidly becoming the most important of all public health problems. The good news is that diabetes, along with most other chronic degenerative diseases, can be prevented through modest lifestyle changes. Knowing the risk factors and learning how to reduce them can restore active and healthy lives to millions.

There is no chronic degenerative disease more epidemic today than type 2 diabetes. And yet it is among the most easily prevented of all diseases. That’s because the explosion of diabetes we see today is largely the result of two trends: rapidly increasing obesity and a dramatic drop in daily physical exercise. Those trends can be reversed and the incidence of obesity, diabetes, and their complications greatly reduced.

The reason I can say that with confidence is the result of an important study by the Diabetes Prevention Program, a major clinical trial performed by the National Institutes of Health. All 3,234 study participants in the study were overweight and had impaired glucose tolerance, recognized risk factors for diabetes.

One-third of the subjects took metformin, the most frequently-prescribed diabetes drug, twice a day, one-third received a placebo twice a day in place of the drug, and one-third received training in diet, exercise, and behavior modification.

The goals of the lifestyle intervention training were to:

achieve and maintain a weight loss of 7 percent with healthy eating and increased physical activity, and
maintain physical activity at least 150 minutes a week with moderate exercise, such as walking or biking.

Not what you would consider a radical change in lifestyle.

The results, however, were radical. While metformin was found to somewhat reduce the risk of diabetes in persons at high risk, lifestyle intervention was far more effective. Overall, healthy diet and exercise—without any drugs—reduced the likelihood of diabetes by nearly two-thirds. Of course there also were no negative drug side effects from eating right and exercising, only additional benefits that can last a lifetime.

These striking results tell us that millions of high-risk people can use diet, exercise, and behavior modification to avoid developing type 2 diabetes. Through nothing more than awareness of risk factors, and individual preventive action, families all around the world can be spared the burden of diabetes and its debilitating complications.

Plastics have become such a pervasive part of our daily lives that it can be difficult to do without them, even when we are concerned about their safety. But most of the plastic bottles and containers we use carry a recycling symbol that can be a help in deciding how to use them.

You’ve been hearing all kinds of bad news reports about toxic chemicals leaching from plastic bottles and containers. If you heat these bottles or re-use them, you might be increasing your exposure to hormone mimics or any of a number of other chemicals.
But plastic is all around us, and not all of it is hazardous to your family’s health. How do you know which types of plastics are worse, and which are not as bad? One clue is the number inside the recycling symbol on the bottom of the bottles or containers. The numbers indicate which are accepted by recyclers, but they also indicate the class of plastic and its chemical characteristics:

No. 1 PETE or PET (polyethylene terephthalate)
No. 2 HDPE (high density polyethylene)
No. 3. V (vinyl) or PVC
No. 4. LDPE (low density polyethylene)
No. 5. PP (polypropylene)
No. 6. PS (polystyrene)
No. 7. Other or miscellanous

To sum up, if the bottle has the number 1, 2, 4, or 5 on the bottom, it’s made from one of the safer plastics. If the number says 3, 6, or 7, there is a greater likelihood that the bottle will be leaving a chemical residue in your beverage. Category No. 3, PVC or polyvinyl chloride, is the worst, followed by No. 7, which may contain polycarbonates (bisphenol-A).
Another rule of thumb is that the softer the plastic the more likely that leaching can occur. You can also use your nose. If you sniff a hint of plastic, find another container. Of course, your best bet is to avoid plastics for food and beverage altogether, and use glass, metal, or ceramic refillable containers whenever possible.

We are constantly being exposed to numerous toxic compounds from air, water and consumer products. Young children are especially vulnerable to toxins because they have immature organ systems, high metabolic rates and are going through rapid physical development. A recent study shows that infants in the U.S. may be exposed to toxic chemicals even from their baby bottles.

Toxic Bisphenol A Leaches from Popular Baby Bottles

Two recent reports have found that six major brands of popular baby bottles leach bisphenol A, a hormone-disrupting chemical used in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastic. Bisphenol-A is used to make numerous plastic products soft and flexible and also in the linings of metal food cans. It is a developmental, neural, and reproductive toxicant that mimics estrogen and can interfere with healthy growth and body function.

The brands of baby bottles tested included products made by Evenflo, Gerber, Dr. Brown’s and Playtex and were purchased at major retailers such as Babies R Us, Target, Walgreens, and Walmart. Laboratory testing showed that 5-8 ng/ml (parts per billion) of bisphenol A leached from all the bottles when heated to 80 degrees C (176 degrees F.). Scientific studies have shown that bisphenol A levels as low as parts per trillion may alter cell function. Heating bottles, pouring hot liquids into them, or using them to give babies acidic or basic beverages have all been shown to increase the rate of bisphenol A leaching from bottles. The use of bisphenol A in the manufacture of baby bottles should be phased out immediately.

A good supplement provides a broad spectrum of essential nutrients --- vitamins, minerals, and a variety of antioxidants such as bioflavanoids, alpha lipoic acid, and coenzyme Q10. Many "multi" formulas miss out on the more costly nutrients.

2. Balanced?

"Nutrients work best together, in synergy --- not alone"

A good supplement delivers nutrients in balance, so our body can enjoy their synergistic benefits. Unbalanced formulations may be harmful, as excessive amounts of one nutrient can sometimes hamper the body's absorption of another.

3. Potent?

"Too much of any is harmful. But too little is ineffective"

The amount of each micronutrient we need is very small (often in thousandths of a gram a day). However, a good supplement provides sufficient amounts for optimal health. Vitamin D Deficiencies Widespread Among Pregnant Women & Infants Despite Prenatal Vitamin Usage

Vitamin D deficiency early in life is associated with rickets, a disorder characterized by soft bones. New research has shown that despite taking a prenatal vitamin, vitamin D deficiency is very common in pregnant women and newborn infants. Higher-dose supplementation and increased sun exposure is needed to improve maternal and infant vitamin D status.

Even among those taking prenatal multivitamin supplements, vitamin D levels were found to be insufficient or deficient in pregnant women, particularly in women living in northern regions, according to research published in the Journal of Nutrition. Researchers took blood samples from 400 pregnant women—200 African American women and 200 Caucasian women—before 22 weeks gestation and again after delivery.

More than 80% of African American women and nearly half of Caucasian women tested at delivery had levels of vitamin D that were insufficient, even though more than 90% of them used prenatal vitamins during pregnancy.

In addition, umbilical cord blood from newborns showed 92.4% of African American babies and 66.1% of Caucasian infants had insufficient vitamin D levels at birth, leaving them at risk for rickets and other health problems. A newborn relies completely on its mother for its vitamin D stores.

These results suggest that African American and Caucasian pregnant women and newborns residing in the northern U.S. are at high risk of vitamin D insufficiency, even when mothers regularly take prenatal vitamins. Higher-dose supplementation is needed to improve maternal and infant vitamin D status.

Founded in 1992 by microbiologist and immunologist Dr. Myron Wentz, USANA Health Sciences is a science-based company that develops scientifically advanced nutritional, personal-care, and weight management products. The name "USANA" derives from Greek and Latin and means "true health."

USANA was founded with a mission to manufacture the highest quality products without compromise, products that people can trust. Because poor manufacturing can destroy great science, USANA is one of the few companies to manufacture most of its products in its own state-of-the-art facility. To ensure that the formulas developed in USANA's laboratories are produced consistently, the same process is followed each time manufacturing begins. When raw ingredients first arrive at USANA, they are immediately quarantined until they are tested for purity, potency, and quality. If an ingredient fails to meet set standards, it is rejected and returned to the supplier.

As the tablets are being manufactured, they are tested for hardness, thickness, disintegration, fragility, and weight uniformity. An inappropriate thickness can indicate an imbalance in ingredients, just as a slight variance in compression can result in tablets being too hard to disintegrate in the stomach, or too soft, causing them to break apart in the bottle.

Before packaging, the final product is tested once more for potency and purity. After the products are packaged, the foil seals, labels, and cotton are double-and triple-checked by both machines and people. Each step in the quality assurance process is accompanied by a written, detailed procedure.

Every dietary supplement produced by USANA carries a potency guarantee, which ensures that what is stated on the label is actually contained in the product. The foundation of USANA's nutritional system is the Essentials™, a comprehensive vitamin, antioxidant, and mineral dietary supplement that contains more than 40 active ingredients and extracts, far more than the 24 vitamins and minerals commonly considered to be adequate. The Essentials (Mega Antioxidant and Chelated Mineral), Proflavanol® 90, and the HealthPak™ AM/PM packs have been exhaustively tested by NSF International and have been found to contain all ingredients at the labeled amounts. NSF is an independent, not-for-profit organization that helps protect consumers by certifying products and writing standards for food, water, air and consumer goods.

Currently, the Food and Drug Administration has not finalized Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for dietary supplements, as they are required to do under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act. Rather, Congress has initially stated that dietary supplement GMP should be modeled after foods. Because of this statement, many supplement manufacturers have chosen to follow GMP for foods. USANA, however, voluntarily follows GMP for pharmaceuticals as the basis for its quality assurance program in the manufacturing of all of its products, meaning USANA treats nutritional supplements with the same care that goes into the manufacturing of pharmaceutical products.

Similar to guidelines in many other countries, pharmaceutical GMP are federally mandated guidelines for the production of over-the-counter drugs; they are considerably stricter than the food GMP followed by many United States supplement manufacturers. Pharmaceutical GMP cover virtually every aspect of drug manufacturing, including facility design and maintenance, raw material specification and control, supplier validation, product design and testing, employee training, process control, finished product release, and complaint handling.

In several countries around the world, supplements are more highly regulated than in the United States. In Australia, for example, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), which regulates dietary supplements, mandates that manufacturers follow a set of GMP identical to pharmaceutical GMP in the United States. As an Australian supplier, USANA is regularly inspected and audited by the TGA to ensure that we meet their GMP standards. Most recently, USANA was audited in June 2006 by the TGA and passed with ease.

Aside from meeting the criteria of regular TGA audits, USANA has voluntarily obtained additional third-party verification of GMP status. Most recently, USANA's Salt Lake City, Utah, manufacturing facility has been certified to be in compliance with GMP requirements set forth in NSF/ANSI Standard 173-2006, Dietary Supplements by NSF International. 5. Why is Visionex important?

AMD and cataracts are the most common age-related vision disorders. While the pathogenesis of cataract and age-related macular degeneration is complex and contains both environmental and genetic factors, several studies have suggested that dietary factors, including antioxidant vitamins, play a key role in slowing the degeneration process and promoting long-term eye health. This comprehensive formula contains generous amounts of the nutrients necessary to promote and enhance long-term eye health. Among the antioxidant nutrients, the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin appear to be some of the most effective for promoting long-term eye health. From studies of AMD rates and dietary intakes, it appears that diets providing at least 6 milligrams (mg) of lutein and zeaxanthin a day have helped reduce AMD prevalence by nearly half and significantly reduced the risk of cataract formation. Unfortunately, diet surveys indicate that few people consume enough of the foods rich in lutein and zeaxanthin to support long-term eye health. Vitamin C, a potent water-soluble antioxidant, plays a vital role in preventing oxidative damage in the lens. Several studies, including the Nurses' Health Study, have associated vitamin C with a reduced risk for nuclear cataract; the most common type of cataract and the one associated with aging. Bilberry extract is a potent antioxidant rich in anthocyanosides. While the mechanisms of action behind bilberry's beneficial effect on the eye are not completely understood, it is thought that they help improve oxygen and blood delivery to the eye, act as free radical scavengers, and support the maintenance of healthy capillaries and night vision. In addition, anthocyanosides have an affinity for the pigmented epithelium (visual purple) area of the retina; the portion of the retina responsible for vision and adjustments to light and dark. Zinc is among the most important of the trace elements in human nutrition and is a cofactor for more than 300 enzymes used by the body including those essential for healthy vision.

6. What is a cataract?

A cataract is the clouding of the normally transparent lens of the eye causing a progressive loss of vision. As the lens becomes increasingly opaque, light rays entering the eye are prevented from focusing on the retina- the light sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye. Symptoms include blurred vision, sensitivity to light and glare, visual distortion, and dimming of colors and vision. It affects more than half of all Americans over age 65. Smoking increases the risk for cataract formation.

7. What is age-related macular degeneration (AMD)?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of blindness in people age 65 and over. This condition affects the macula densa, the small central part of the retina responsible for acute and detailed vision activities such as reading, writing, driving a car, recognizing faces, and watching television. Early signs of macular degeneration include a distortion in the shape of objects and a progressive deterioration in visual acuity. In some people, AMD advances so slowly that it will have little effect on their vision as they age. But in others, the disease progresses faster and may lead to loss of vision in one or both eyes. Currently there is no known cure. Risk factors include age, eye color, gender, total sunlight exposure, cigarette smoking, and dietary intake of antioxidants. Because treatment options are very limited, primary prevention is very important.

8. What are lutein and zeaxanthin?

Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only carotenoids known to selectively accumulate in the eye tissues. They are absorbed from the diet into circulation and deposited in the lens and macular regions of the eye. Because the eyes are subjected to such a high degree of oxidizing radiation each day, a generous dietary intake of these carotenoids is essential to provide optimal protection to delicate eye tissues. Research studies have shown that in the lens, lutein and zeaxanthin may provide protection against cataract formation. Similarly, other studies have shown a strong correlation between high dietary intakes of lutein and zeaxanthin with protection from age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

9. What is Visionex?

Why did the amount of vitamin D increase?

Numerous research studies have been published within the last few years indicating that vitamin D deficiency is more widespread than previously thought. In addition, new research has suggested that to overcome these deficiencies and problems associated with a lack of vitamin D, recommended intakes should be increased significantly. Although vitamin D can be toxic in excess, new information shows that the upper limit is more than 4,000 IU per day in a person with normal vitamin D levels to begin with. This is in sharp contrast to old information published in the early 1970's on which the previous upper limit was established (2,000 IU). The new level of 600 IU included in the Essentials will help to better establish and maintain healthy levels of vitamin D when added to typical dietary intakes and sunlight. Adequate Vitamin D is very important in the prevention of many chronic health problems.

Why was the amount of vitamin B12 increased?

Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin), in combination with B vitamins folic acid and vitamin B6, have been shown to be important nutrients in the maintenance of normal homocysteine levels. Abnormal homocysteine levels are considered to be a risk factor for heart disease. Vitamin B12 requires a protein secreted by the stomach for proper absorption and utilization. However, due to increased intakes of certain medications (ie. antacids, acid blockers), an increasingly elderly population and other factors, actual requirements for vitamin B12 may be higher for many people than can be achieved through diet and typical supplement dosages. Since vitamin B12 is virtually non-toxic at any level, the amount provided was increased substantially to account for a greater percentage of the typical population who may not be getting enough.

Why was glutathione removed?

Glutathione is a compound that is part of one of the body's most important antioxidant systems. However, glutathione itself is not absorbed intact very efficiently. One of the best ways to increase glutathione levels in the body is to provide the building blocks and precursors needed to manufacture it within the body. N-acteyl L-cysteine (NAC) is an effective precursor to glutathione and more efficiently raises levels in the body than taking glutathione itself. Thus, we have increased the NAC levels significantly and removed the glutathione compound. We also provide substantial amounts of other important nutrients associated with glutathione such as selenium and vitamin E.

Why did the amount of copper decrease?

The copper level was decreased from 3 mg per day to 2 mg per day. This was done mainly to provide a better ratio to the existing level of zinc, and to be more in line with newer dietary recommendations.

Why does the formula contain vanadium citrate instead of vanadyl sulfate?

There is no significant difference between vanadyl sulfate and vanadium citrate as far as quality is concerned. Whenever possible we try to make our product formulations as uniform as possible for all countries. Vanadium citrate is an accepted form in more markets so it used for reasons of consistency.

Why did you decrease the Vitamin E from 450 IU to 400 IU?

Although the amount of Vitamin E as d-alpha tocopherol was slightly decreased, an additional 34 mg of mixed tocopherols (mainly gamma tocopherol) was added so that the total level of tocopherols remains basically the same.

What are Cinnamon Extract and Pomegranate Extract and how are they beneficial?

Bioflavonoids are a diverse group of naturally occurring plant compounds that exhibit a host of biological activities, most notably for their powerful antioxidant properties that complement, extend, and synergize the antioxidant activities of other nutrients making them an important nutritional component in the Essentials.

Pomegranates are a good source of antioxidants. The type of antioxidant in pomegranate is somewhat different than the compounds already in the complex, and as such, it adds to the biodiversity of the complex.

Cinnamon extract contains bioflavonoids called proanthocyanidins that are very similar to the proanthocyanidins contained in grape seeds. Again this is a new type of antioxidant in the complex. Cinnamon has been studied for its effect on increasing insulin sensitivity and help in controlling blood sugar levels.

Why did the amount of alpha-lipoic acid increase?

The amount of alpha-lipoic acid per tablet has remained at 5 mg per tablet. Because the daily dosage has increased to 4 tablets per day, the amount of alpha-lipoic acid has increased by 5 mg.

Why are you using a mixture of calcium carbonate and calcium citrate?

Calcium carbonate contains more calcium by weight than calcium citrate; by adding calcium carbonate to the formula we were able to make the tablets smaller while still keeping the same amount of elemental calcium. This mixture has been used in Usana's Active Calcium for several years.
