Steve Wynn folds on Aqueduct racino

Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn has abandoned his bid to run a slot parlor at Aqueduct Racetrack, whittling the field of hopefuls for the potentially lucrative license down to five.

The withdrawal of Mr. Wynn, who had been considered among the front-runners, leaves two favorites remaining, according to a source connected to the process but not affiliated with any of the bids. Penn National Gaming, a one-time dark horse that has gained momentum, and SL Green, New York City's largest commercial landlord, are now leading the field, the source said.

The winning bidder is expected to be chosen within two weeks by a triumvirate of Gov. David Paterson, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Democratic conference leader John Sampson. The bidders' ability to guarantee a hefty upfront payment to the state will be the overriding factor in any decision.

Former charity bingo employees clustered around the Walker County courthouse as the county commission met inside. They are mad about the court ruling that made electronic bingo illegal and left them without jobs.

There were about fifteen charity electronic bingo businesses operating in Walker County until Judge Robert Vance ruled that they are not legal under the county's constitutional amendment that allows charity paper bingo.

Bingo hall owner Curtis Whitley said the decision wiped out 1100 jobs. He said 6000 Walker County residents signed a petition seeking another constitutional amendment to make the machines legal.

Ohio voters OK casinos

Barring counting errors, the voters of Ohio have said "yes" to casinos in their state.

With 98% of the state's precincts reporting, the votes favored Issue 3 by 53%, allowing for one casino each in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo.

The vote marks the last of hotly-contested casino initiatives that have been on Ohio ballots five times during the past 20 years, and--until today--have gone down in defeat.

Proponents of Issue 3 say its passage will mean 34,000 new jobs for Ohio, and that the four new casinos would generate $11 billion in five years. Ohio's unemployment rate stands currently at over 10%.

Companies backing Issue 3 include Penn National Gaming and MTR Gaming Inc. Both companies already own horse race tracks in Ohio.

Boyd advances effort to acquire Station Casino's assets

Boyd Gaming Corp. of Las Vegas stepped up its campaign over the weekend to buy some or all of the assets of bankrupt competitor Station Casinos Inc.

In a rare Sunday court filing, Boyd said it supports a motion by a minority group of lenders that an examiner be appointed to study Station's finances.

Station, taken private by members of the founding Fertitta family and Colony Capital of Los Angeles in 2007, filed for bankruptcy protection in July after the recession reduced revenue at its hotel-casinos and it was unable to service its debt -- last reported at $6.49 billion.

The Las Vegas company has been resisting the request by the group of minority lenders that an examiner be appointed to look into how the 2007 deal affects creditors today. Bankruptcy Judge Gregg Zive has already approved a request by the case's Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors to hire a law firm to investigate that and other issues.

Ho-Chunk buy rejected Beloit casino site

The Ho-Chunk Nation has purchased property in Beloit that had previously been targeted for the development of an off-reservation casino by two northern Wisconsin tribes, opening the door for a potential casino development there.

A purchase price was not disclosed in a tribal press release.

The casino application by the Bad River and St. Croix bands of the Chippewa Tribe was rejected by the federal government in January 2009 because, according to the federal government, the site was too far away from the tribes' north woods reservations.

In a press release, the Ho-Chunk Nation said proximity of the property to its existing tribal land, the Ho-Chunk's federally recognized aboriginal ties to Beloit and the region, and the fact that its compact allows for development of one more casino site enhances the possibility that it could locate a gaming development on the property.

Daley: Casino in Chicago should be government-owned

A land-based casino could be a partial solution to Chicago's financial crisis, but only if it's government-owned because City Hall has to "deal with all the repercussions of gambling," Mayor Daley said.

Three weeks ago, Daley shot down a trial balloon floated by two Chicago aldermen to build a casino and entertainment complex on the Michael Reese Hospital site once set aside for an Olympic Village.

But that doesn't mean he's slamming the door to other Chicago sites. It all depends how serious the talk is in Springfield.
