RIA Cruise / Conference In December - RIAdventure

Just a quick update on RIAdventure. We are now just a couple months away. Time is flying by but it isn't too late to book the conference/cruise. What could be better then going on a cruise from New Orleans to Costa Maya (Mexico), Santo Tomas De Castilla (Guatemala), Belize City (Belize) and Cozumel (Mexico)?

How about hanging out with Ted Patrick, Ryan Stewart, Doug McCune, Samuel Rivello and Faisal Abid talking about all the HOT news that has come out of recent Adobe announcements. Dig in deep with questions about Flash to iPhone apps, or how about the many enhancements in Flash 10.1? Want to get the skinny on developing apps and ensuring they run on the most platforms including mobile? Yup now is a good time to book.

Aion Review

I spent some time at the end of the Aion open beta checking out the game. I have been itching to try a new online game out, and somehow I just found out about Aion last week.

The game itself installed pretty easy. NCSoft has a launcher to manage which game to run, download patches for, etc. So if you have any of their other games I suppose your already part way there.

CFUnited Top Ten List of Surprise Announcements/Events

Inspired by Dan Vega's Top 10 things he is looking forward to, I thought I would just post my top ten expected surprise announcements/events at this years CFUnited. This list is not to be confused with last years list, which was probably more funny.

This year we will not be getting backpacks. Instead we all get snuggies.
On 2:30 PM Thursday afternoon the staff of the resort is forced to pull Peter Bell from the pool, where he has been floating on an inflatable alligator and working for a full 30 hours non stop.
Open Bar for the entire week. The resort goes dry in 3.5 hours. Liz brings in extra booze by helicopter.
Todd Sharp, Ray Camden, Dee Sadler, and Ben Nadel will be doing a barber shop quartet number to close out the show.
Adobe announces a new webOS. Adam Lehman and Ben Forta demo how easily it can connect to our LDAP, send mail, read PDF's and create spreadsheets. Turns out ColdFusion 9 was really a double secret codename all along.
Rumors about a supposed CF Fight Club materialize with a splash during the SciFi BOF.
One exhausted exhibitor will decide not to follow the passport card model of previous years, and simply punch a visitor instead.
Nobody will complain about WiFi.
#OMGWHATDIDIDRINKLASTNIGHT will become a trending topic on twitter based on what started off as a friendly discussion of which is better, scotch or tequila.
The most popular session every day turns out to be the golf course to the shock of no one.

I am really excited to see everyone next week. If I am not in a session or at the Savvy Software booth look for me at the bar or pool. :-)

We have added some more speakers to our RIAdventure 360 line up. Ted Patrick will be joining us this year. Ted is back on the Adobe Platform Evangelism team and we are really excited to have him with us.

Ted and Ryan Stewart will be teaming up this year to do the keynote for the cruise.

RIA Unleashed - Conference @ Boston this November

My friend Brian just announced he is holding a 3 track conference this November in Boston. Called RIAUnleashed. He already has a good speaker line up and the topics are all interesting to me. Flex, AIR and ColdFusion.

Brian has a good track record for putting on events, as he has held a few Flex Camps before.

RIAdventure Early Bird Discount Ends Soon

The RIAdventure cruise/conference is right around the corner and our early bird discount ends in 2 days. The price for the conference is $250 + cost of cruise ($660-$980). That includes food! Yup for about $1,000 to $1,300 you can do a 7 day cruise PLUS attend a great RIA conference. This is a great deal!

My Domain Name Generator

For fun this weekend I decided to build my own domain name generator. It is a one page site built with ColdFusion (CF) and JQuery (JS). Basically it gets random words from the categories you select in the order that you select, then checks to see if the generated domain name is available. If so it provides a link to godaddy.com for the result. If people actually buy a domain name via the site I theoritically get a 20% commission. Now I just need 500 domain names a day purchased from the site and I am all set. For those wondering how I am getting the availability, I looked into the reseller programs of the main registrars and found that each had a fee to sign up. GoDaddy actually charges the most if you want access to their API. So I then found a handy whois cfc posted by Dan Vega that used Java to ping a whois server. I modified it for my needs and just parsed the results as needed. Instead of going the reseller direction (I don't want to be responsible for anyones domains and I think people would prefer to register with godaddy directly) I signed up with Commission Junction for the affiliate program. Let me know what you think. What categories should I add? Any words missing from categories that you noticed? Any spelling errors?

I am very pleased to announce the next RIAdventure.

This round we are partnering with the 360 Conference guys to put together a full conference/cruise. It is a 7 day cruise. Travel from New Orleans to Costa Maya (Mexico), Santo Tomas De Castilla (Guatemala), Belize City (Belize) and Cozumel (Mexico). There are two full days at sea, and it is those two days that the conference will happen.

Seacoast NH CF/Flex UG Meeting Tomorrow

Mountain Dew Game Fuel - World of Warcraft Soda!

Mountain Dew and World of Warcraft go together like cheese and crackers. So it should be no surprise that there is a new drink on the market. Mountain Dew Game Fuel. It is WOW branded either horde or alliance. My wife got the alliance drink a couple days ago and I have to say it tasted pretty good.

One thing I didn't know, is that there is a whole web site dedicated to the drink, with prizes being given out every 15 minutes. The prizes range from Mtn Dew tshirts, hoodies, gaming mice, all the way to an Alienware gaming notebook (given out daily) and trip to Blizcon (given out weekly). When you create an account on this web site you get tokens for doing certain tasks.

My Social Links Day

I had a great time chatting with everyone at cf.Ojbective(). One of the great parts of a conference like cf.o is the networking/social aspect. But we all know I love that anyway. Now that we are all back I have gotten a few emails, IM's and such asking for other contact info. So to save some possible time here is my linked in, twitter, facebook, etc. info.
