However, it is understood that the potential of both existing and new technologies in supporting student learning is not in the technologies themselves but the ways they are used as tools for learning".

Technology has infiltrated schools for the past decade. Nearly every school in America has computers in the classroom and/or in the computer lab for student use. Yet, is the computer being used in the way it was intended? There are many points of view among educators as to the answer. According to the article Critical Issue: Using Technology to Enhance Literacy Instruction experts agree educators can take advantage of the many uses of technology to support students’ learning.

The classroom teacher today has a variety of ways to access technology to make instruction interesting and individualized. From computers to interactive boards, there is always some means to address various student needs. Smart Boards, for example, are an excellent tool to appeal to both the kinesthetic and spatial learners. For this reason, school districts have invested a great deal of money on technology and tools to support technology in the classroom.

The primary objective for educators is to facilitate instruction in the classrooms and address diverse learning styles. The article Why Kids love Computer Nets; Using technology to escape the bounds of the classroom states that "children are learning to work in ways never dreamed of before". Distance learning, video conferencing, and webcasts are just some of the ways to engage students. They become so involved without ever realizing they are learning.

There are many ways technology can be used in a classroom. For example, students can enhance their communications skills through use of e-mails, online chatting, and message boards. In the article “Critical Issue: Using Technology to Enhance Literacy Instruction” it was stated that “Although collaboration in itself does not necessarily promise to improve literacy skills or guarantee learning, it has proven to be a powerful motivation tool for students”. Students are motivated towards learning when they have the opportunity to explore new ways to express themselves.

For additional information on various forms of educational technologies in the classroom today click on the following link: Educational Technologies

References

Corcoran, Elizabeth (1993), Why Kids love Computer Nets; Using technology to escape the bounds of the classroom.
