Facts About Laser Hair Removal

Over the past ten years the Center for Laser Surgery has been involved in patient treatment and clinical research regarding laser-assisted hair removal. We are pleased to offer a wide variety of advanced laser systems for removing unwanted body hair which includes face, neck and back hair. The following material will inform you of the benefits, risks and anticipated results associated with laser hair removal.

How does laser hair removal work?

At the present time four laser wavelengths are available for the treatment of unwanted body hair. In essence, these wavelengths target pigment granules in the hair (melanin) in an effort to destroy hair follicles. Hair follicles are capable of producing hairs of various thickness and colors. Dark hair contains the pigment melanin which serves as the target for energy at these wavelengths. Four wavelengths, 694nm. produced by the Ruby laser, 755nm. produced by the Alexandrite laser, 800nm. produced by the Diode laser, and 1064nm. produced by the Neodymium-YAG laser, have been shown to be effective in the removal of pigmented hair. The pulsed laser energy is absorbed by the pigmented hair shaft and transferred to the surrounding follicle. The heat build-up caused by the absorption of energy by the hair itself is capable of creating follicular damage and retard or prevent future hair production by that follicle.
How successful is the process of laser hair removal?

Don't pay attention to false and misleading claims by so called experts. Patients will achieve varying degrees of success. The application of these laser energies to the skin results in almost complete removal of all actively growing hairs. The number of hairs that are permanently removed as a result of one treatment can vary. Part of the difficulty in eradication of unwanted or excess hair lies in the fact that the follicle has tremendous regenerative capabilities and that these recuperative powers are highly variable from individual to individual and from one anatomic site to another.

In most instances multiple treatments are necessary in order to achieve permanent hair reduction and in some instances treatment may fail to permanently remove all the hair in a given anatomic site. In order to understand the process it is important to understand the biology of hair growth itself. Hair growth cycles are divided into three phases. The anagen follicle or growing hair is the major target for laser energy and represents the most vulnerable phase of the hair growth cycle. Telogen or resting hairs are not actively growing and appear to be more resistant to the laser energy. The transitional phase between anagen and telogen phases known as the catagen phase is brief but also relatively resistant to laser removal.

Depending on the body site, various percentages of hairs are in the anagen, catagen and telogen phase. As a result, it is necessary to treat a given anatomic area more than once in order to attempt to achieve permanent hair removal. Since the anagen phase is most vulnerable, a period of one to three months between treatments is necessary to allow the resting or telogen phase hairs to once again enter the anagen cycle and become more sensitive to the laser energy.
How is the laser treatment performed?

Laser hair removal is a time-consuming but relatively straightforward process. You may be given a prescription for topical anesthetic cream and may also be instructed how to apply this cream (BLT) at home. We can also apply the cream in the office if desired. This cream greatly reduces the discomfort associated with the laser hair removal process. Prior to treatment the hairs will be shaved and the laser treatment will proceed. Treatment times vary from a few minutes for areas such as the chin and neck to a few hours for extensive areas of the legs, back and chest. After the procedure cool compresses and soothing gels are applied to the treated area and patients spend time relaxing before being discharged. Patients are asked to return in one week for a follow-up visit and then are examined monthly in order to determine when it is best to re-treat the involved areas.
What will I look like after treatment?

The application of laser energy to the skin results in a pink color and on occasion crusting in the area will develop lasting a few days. Discomfort similar to a sunburn may be noted over the first 24 hour period and in extensive cases Tylenol or mild Codeine containing analgesics may be used. In certain instances, especially in darker complected individuals, temporary pigmentation changes may be noted. One may notice hair within the follicles for up to two weeks after therapy, however, this will fall out leaving smooth, hair-free skin.
What do I have to do before the treatment begins?

During your initial consultation you will be asked to provide a detailed medical and hormonal history. When indicated, we will obtain blood tests in order to uncover any hormone-related causes which may be associated with the excess production of body hair. Patients who are darker skin type may use a bleaching cream (Hydroquinone 4%, or Kojic Acid) for three to four weeks prior to treatment in order to lessen the effects of brown melanin pigment in the skin surrounding the hair follicle.
What are the risks associated with laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal has proven to be a very safe procedure when performed in physicians offices, not at spas and strip malls. Since laser pulses are a constant energy, there is little chance of scarring associated with this process. In certain instances temporary increased or decreased pigmentation will be noted within the lasered sites, especially in more darkly pigmented patients. In certain cases there may be some degree of crusting during the postoperative period which is treated by the use of bland emollients or topical antibiotics.

Nurses and physicians are on call 24 hours a day to assist you through your postoperative period and to answer any questions you may have during this time.
What are the costs involved in the procedure?

Laser hair removal involves the use of sophisticated expensive laser equipment in order to deliver precise and effective energy pulses. During your initial consultation the areas to be treated will be determined and a fee quote per treatment session will be given to you. This fee involves the cost of the procedure, dressings and postoperative visits. The fee for re-treatment sessions at one to two month intervals may be the same or less than the initial treatment depending on the extent of follow-up treatment needed. Our aim is to provide safe, effective and affordable laser treatments for patients wishing to avail themselves of this service.
What can I expect?

Laser treatment for hair removal currently represents one of the most exciting areas within laser medicine and surgery. Patient variation and the nature of hair follicle growth make it difficult to predict the exact outcome in every case. Misc information:

As of January 2011, the SIM cards for the DataConnect passes are free. The shop just sells you the SIM card and you have to go online to the "buyasession" link and create an account. The pass is then paid with a credit card. During registration the IMEI of a device has to be entered. However, this is not checked when later using the SIM, i.e. it can be used in more than one device.
The SIM card is only valid if not used for 3 months (previously 6 months).

I bought my AT&T prepaid card in an official AT&T Shop (Dec 2009). The shop "expert" told me that specially for the iPhone the MediaNet is not working (anyhow i took it and it worked after changing the APN). The inital card is for free - but i must charge 25$ for voice and 19.99$ for Data 100 MB - so the total was 44.99+3.15Tax. But the MediaNet service was activated immidiatly (i tried it about 2 hours later). The card is only valid for 3 month. You need no ID-Card.

The saleman also told me i can use the "official" contract offers - but without contract (everytime canelation possible) - but i must bring my own hardware.

Mmmmm, eye candy. Who can resist the allure of HD graphics and high FPS rates? Not us, that’s for sure. But all too often, people forget that banging visuals are only half of a satisfying entertainment equation; audio is just as important as video if you truly want to be submersed in your favorite action flick. Along those lines, yesterday, DTS – who sits next to Dolby atop the audio codec heap – announced a partnership to bring its DTS UltraPC II Plus technology to upcoming Fujitsu PCs.

To be more specific, the collection of high-performance audio technologies will be appearing in Fujitsu’s FH, DH, NH and AH lines of all-in-ones and laptops in a continuation of the two companies’ ongoing partnership. DTS UltraPC II Plus actually consists of seven different technologies, the press release explains, all of which are currently available in stand-alone form in various types of gadgetry and electronics:

Spotify’s US launch caused such a big splash in the streaming music pond that ripples are still being felt. Many of the pricing barriers placed between users and the streaming services’ vast music libraries are tumbling down in Spotify’s wake: Pandora ditched its listening limit, the previously “Paying customers only” MOG rolled out a free version, and today, Rdio unveiled a new plan to let users get their listening on cash-free.

Like MOG, Rdio used to only be open to paying customers. The $5 and $10 subscriptions are still available, but the new free model lets users try out Rdio’s high-fidelity tunes – both ad- and credit card-free. A meter at the top of your homepage tells freeloaders how much freeloading time you have left.

Rdio’s been adding to its catalog like gangbusters and it’s now up to over 12 million songs. It also features full integration with Facebook’s Open Graph, so you can annoy your Facebook friends by flooding your wall with a record of every tune you play.

Study: Daily Deals Sites Deliver the 'Daily,' Not Always the 'Deal'

The Internet holds fantastic promise. You can travel the virtual world from your desktop, harness the power of distributed computing projects to better humanity, and research any topic out there. But mostly we like to wring the Internet for awesome deals and save a bunch of money. Plenty of so-called deal sites exist to help with this mission, but are they delivering on their promise?

Thumbtack, an online "vibrant marketplace for local services," released a report that paints a different picture, at least in some areas. According to Thumbtack, daily deals for local services often fall well short of being all that and a bag of coupons, and actually run higher than if you ventured out on the your own.

"Daily deal sites frequently offer deals in the local services industry that are significantly higher than regular prices offered by many local professionals," Thumbtack wrote in its report.

Thumbtack is particularly critical of Groupon, possibly because that's one of the bigger local deal sites on the Web. In one example, Thumbtack stated that Groupon recently offered a deal on home cleaning services in Phoenix for $24.40 per hour when the average rate of all cleaning services in the area is $23.50. Conducting its own research, Thumbtack said of the 50 bids that came through its site for home cleaning services in the area, 22 charged less than $23.50/hour, with rates bottoming out at $17.50/hour.

The same concept applies to a number of services, and not just house cleaning, according to Thumbtack. And while Thumbtack doesn't come right out and say it, the site's list of examples paint a picture of Groupon and others quoting inflated regular prices for services in order to offer equally inflated discounts.

So what does Groupon have to say? Nothing, as of yet. A report on The Street notes that "after the Thumbtack attack went live, its findings posted everywhere from VentureBeat to The New York Times," with Groupon not responding to email inquiries.

Groupon did not immediately respond to our own request for comment.

The Angel Voice ** Tips for Effective IVR Menu Design Part 2

Well designed IVR menus are essential to customer service. In my last post, I covered a few tips for IVR menu design. Here are a few more that can keep IVR systems help customers get what they need without frustration.

1. Never allow holes in your Dual Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF or touch-tone) choices.

We say that a menu has a hole if the options presented are not sequential. A menu that offers the user the option to press 1, 2 or 4 has a hole. A menu that offers the options 1, 2 and 3 does not. Avoiding holes helps IVR systems avoid confusing users.

2. Mark their current position in the menu tree.

A simple “Main menu,” played prior to listing the menu items, will reduce user confusion as to “where” they are in the dialog. The menu position marking becomes even more important as the user is led deeper into the menu tree. When you are leading a user down a menu path, list a menu header whenever you traverse a path and then list the sub-menu options. In case of a no-input or a no-match, then list the full path prior to replaying the menu prompt.

Example:

System: Main menu: you can say, “Check balance,” “Withdraw funds” or “Transfer funds.”

User: Transfer funds.

System: Transferring funds. Which account do you want to transfer funds from? You can say, “Checking,” “Savings” or “Money market.”
User: Savings.

System: Transferring funds from savings.

3. Avoid mixing voice and DTMF menu choices.

If your application is voice enabled, avoid cramming your menu prompts with instructions on how to pick menu items by voice and by DTMF. Avoid, for instance, wording such as “You can say, ‘Check balance’ or press 1, ‘Open account’ or press 2 or ‘Transfer funds’ or press 3.” Instead, first offer users the leaner, voice-only menu: “You can say, ‘Check balance,’ ‘Open account’ or ‘Transfer funds’”—and, only if the user seems to have trouble with it, revert to the mixed prompt: “You can say ‘Check balance’ or press 1, ‘Open account’ or press 2 or ‘Transfer funds’ or press 3.”

4. Use the same part of speech/clausal form in all listed menu options.

Be consistent so that callers aren’t confused.

Bad prompt:

System: You can say, “Balance,” “Open account” or “Transfer.”

Good prompt:

System: You can say, “Check balance,” “Open account” or “Transfer funds.”

5. Keep your menus consistent with one another.

Once users have gotten past the first menu, make sure sub-menus only offer options that apply to them. For example: in the opening menu, you ask the user to indicate whether or not they are a registered customer and then you branch off accordingly. Make sure that after users indicate that they are a registered customer, none of the sub-menus offers options that apply only to non-registered customers (e.g., “To speak with one of our agents about becoming a registered customer, press 3”).

6. Let users ask, “What are my choices?”

At any point in the call, the user should be able to ask, “What are my choices?” In response, the system should respond by, first, positioning the user in the menu tree and then listing the menu items that the user can select from.

Example:

User: What are my choices?

System: We were transferring funds. I need to know which account you would like to transfer funds from? You can say, “Checking,” “Savings” or “Money market.”

How Common is Mesothelioma?

New cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in between 2,500 and 3,000 Americans each year. These numbers, while significant, would indicate that mesothelioma is still a relatively rare disease, though incidence is expected to rise in the next decade according to projections.

What is the Typical Age at Diagnosis?

The first diagnosis of mesothelioma typically occurs in men and women between the ages of 50 and 70 years. Mesothelioma patients, certainly, have been diagnosed at ages younger than 50 and older than 70, but diagnoses for those age groups are considered statistical anomalies.

Does Mesothelioma Occur in a Particular Sex or Racial Demographic More than Another?

Mesothelioma is much more common in men than women, due mostly to occupational asbestos exposure being more common among men of industrial labor sites. Figures show Apple have more money than the USA

The latest financial results from Apple have put their reserves at an astronomical $76.4 billion, incredibly this means that they currently have more money than the USA. The latest figures from the US Treasury Department have revealed that the country has a balance of $73.7 billion, nearly $3 billion less than Apple. It’s been hard to miss all the recent news with the United States attempting to further raise their debt ceiling, currently over £14 trillion. Apple however, has become a superpower, announcing profit after profit, with the iPhone and iPad dominating the smartphone and tablet markets.

A huge question surrounds what Apple will use their huge cash pot on? With Apple being the king of patents and trademarks in the technology market, speculation surrounds whether they will put more resources towards funding further patents. Apple are reported to have splashed out $4.5 billion for more than 6,000 patents and have been tipped to be interested in online movie site Netflix and several other smaller firms.

Apple are yet to release this years huge moneymaker, the iPhone 5, which has been speculated to have an Autumn release date. This will further add masses to Apples bank and could be helped by a potential new model of the iPad. One thing is for sure in the consumer electronics market, it is Apple who wears the crown.

HTC sales break monthly record

It was a good month in July for HTC with sales reaching £957 million. This is HTC’s highest ever monthly sales results. HTC sales are up by 83% compared to this time last year which is great. HTC have expanded their products recently, with new handsets like the HTC 7 Pro and the HTC Flyer, it is not surprising that they are doing well.

HTC have also announced that it will be purchasing Dashwire, which is a mobile web services platform, to aid its cloud services. HTC will use the technology from Dashwire for cloud sync and device set up. This allows users to access their important content wherever they are on any device, which is highly convenient. This will also help with the court battles HTC are facing, especially the recent ones with Apple, as it will enhance its patent.

iPhone 5 release date now rumoured to be as late as October?

So when can I finally get my hands on the much anticipated iPhone 5 is the question that many (including me!) are asking right now and a recent strong rumour has led us to believe there could still be a little longer to wait. But before we go into the latest rumour, lets have a quick recap on the iPhone 5 release story so far.

Historically, late June or July has been the month that Apple have chosen to release their previous iPhone models and this was the initial anticipated release date of the iPhone 5. It was not to be and talk of problems with suppliers and design issues were said to be the main reasons behind the delay. Since then and until recently, all attention has been on the month of September and specifically with Apples next big meeting on September 7th. This date has previously been used to announce updates or changes with the Apple iPod range, although a lot of buzz is surrounding the date as when Apple will choose to unveil their new iPhone. September would also coincide with the release of Apples latest operating system, iOS5, so this date is still a strong rumour.

The latest rumour that has reached us has come from the website Boy Genius Report, who have cited that one of their sources at AT&T (American phone network) have had communication from their vice president to expect the iPhone 5 in October. He goes on to say that the VP has also instructed staff that the next 35-50 day period will be extremely busy and teams should prepare accordingly. Other Apple fan sites and rumourvilles have also started pointing towards a likely October release date. Frustratingly, this means that us iPhone fans have an even longer wait and the tension continues to mount. However, one huge positive is that Apple may be using the time carefully to conduct final tests on the iPhone 5 and its technology and I’m sure we all agree that we don’t want to see another antenna disaster like the one we experienced with the iPhone 4!

বর্তমানে যে ইলেকট্রনিক পণ্যটি আমাদের দৈনন্দিন জীবনকে আলোড়িত করছে তা নি:সন্দেহে "মোবাইল ফোন", আবার কেউ কেউ বলে "সেলুলার ফোন"৷ কিন্তু কিভাবেই বা কাজ করে এই ফোন? সাধারণ ফোন থেকে এর পার্থক্য কি? মোবাইল ফোন এর কর্মপদ্ধতি সাধারণভাবে আপনাদের কাছে আজ তুলে ধরবো৷ প্রথমেই বলে নিই, মোবাইল ফোন কিন্তু একটি "রোডিও"৷ প্রথমদিকে মোবাইল সাধারণ ফোনের মত কাজ করলেও বর্তমানে এর ব্যাবহার অনেক বিস্তার হচ্ছে৷ নিম্নে তার কিছু ব্যাবহার

প্রাথমিক কথা: মোবাইল ফোন ঠিক কবে থেকে শুরু হল? তা ঠিক হিসাব করে বলা মুশকিল৷ তবে প্রথম যে দুটি টেকনলজি এর পূর্বপুরুষ তা হল রোডিও ও টেলিফোন৷ এই দুটির সংমিশ্রন ও আধুনিক রুপই হল আজকের মোবাইল ফোন৷ টেলিফোন আবিষ্কার করেন গ্রাহাম বেল ১৮৭৬ সনে এবং এর ১৮ বছর পরে ১৮৯৪ সনে মার্কনি রেডিও আবিষ্কার করেন৷

মোবাইল ফোন এর আগে যারা মোবাইল কমিউনিকেশন এর জন্য গাড়িতে রেডিও ফোন অনেকে ব্যাবহার করতো৷ কিন্তু এটির সাইজ অনেক বড় হওয়াতে সহজে হাতে করে ঘুরে বেড়ান যেতনা৷ আর সাধারণত তা ২৫ টি মাত্র চ্যানেলের মাধ্যমে সেন্ট্রাল এন্ট্যানে এর সাথে যোগাযোগ করতো৷ তার মানে, রেডিও ফোন এর ট্রান্সমিশন ক্ষমতা ৪০ থেকে ৫০ মাইলের মত হতে হত৷ আর চ্যানেল সংখ্যা
কম হওয়ার কারণে এক সাথে অনেকে ব্যবহার করতে পারতোনা৷ এবার দেখা যাক বর্তমান মোবাইল ফোন কিভাবে কাজ করে৷ বর্তমানে একটি শহর বা যায়গাকে মোবাইল কম্পানি অনেকগুলি সেল (Cell) এ ভাগ করে নেয়৷ সাধারণত প্রতিটি সেল ১০ বর্গমাইলের সমান ও ষষ্ঠভূজ হয়ে থাকে আর প্রতিটি সেলে একটি বেস ষ্টেশন থাকে৷ আর প্রতিটি সেলে ৮০০ টি Frequency তে কথা বলা যায়৷ যদিও মোবাইল ফোনে কথা বলার জন্য একটি শহরে অনেকগুলি টাওয়ার প্রয়োজন কিন্তু বর্তমানে এর ব্যাবহারকারীর সংখ্যা খুব বেশী হবার কারণে এর খরচ কম হয়ে যায় ও ব্যবসায়ীক ভাবে
সফল হয়৷ প্রতিটি শহরে একটি সেন্ট্রাল অফিস থাকে যা বেস ষ্টেশন বা টাওয়ার গুলির সাথে যোগাযোগ রাখে৷ এই সেন্ট্রাল অফিসগুলিকে Mobile Telephone Switching Office (MTSO) বলে৷ সেল মোবাইল ফোন ও বেস ষ্টেশন Low power transmissions ব্যবহার করে৷ ফলে মোবইল ফোন অল্পক্ষমতা সম্পনড়ব ব্যাটারি দিয়ে চলতে পারে, যার ফলেই আজকের মোবাইল ফোন এত ছোট আকার হয়েছে, এবং ভবিষ্যতে আরো ছোট হবে৷

যখন আমরা মোবাইল অন করি, তখন এটি কন্ট্রোল চ্যানেলের মাধ্যমে SID (System Identification Code) গ্রহণ করে এবং তা মোবাইল ফোনের ভিতরের এর সাথে মিলিয়ে দেখে৷ এছাড়া এটি MTSO এর সাথেও যোগাযোগ রাখে৷ সেন্ট্রাল অফিস মোবাইল ফোনের অবস্থান একটি ডাটাবেস এ রাখে৷ অর্থাত্‍ আপনি শহরের ফিতরে কখন কোন সেলে থাকছেন তা সেন্ট্রাল অফিস এর ডাটাবেসে থাকে৷ যখনই কেউ আপনাকে ফোন করে, তখন এই সেন্ট্রাল অফিস তার ডাটাবেস থেকে বাহির করে আপনি কোন টাওয়ারের কাছাকাছি আছেন, এবং সেই টাওয়ার থেকে আপনার মোবাইলের ফ্রিকিয়েন্সিতে যোগাযোগ করে দুইজনের সাথে যোগাযোগ করে দেয়৷ এবং আপনি কথা বলতে পারেন৷

মোবাইল ফোনের আরেকটি বড় সুবিধা হল আপনি গাড়িতে কিংবা অন্য কিছুতে চলমান থাকলেও কথা বলতে পারবেন৷ আপনি যখন কথা বলতে বলতে একটি সেল থেকে অন্য একটি সেলের দিকে এগুতে থাকেন, তখন বর্তমানে ব্যাবহার করা টাওয়ারটি থেকে দূরত্ব বেড়ে যাবার কারণে অন্য টাওয়ারটির সাথে সংযোগ স্থাপন করে, এর ফলে আপনি এক জায়গা থেকে অন্য জায়গাতে গেলেও
নির্বিঘেড়ব আপনার কথোপথন চালিয়ে যেতে পারেন৷

মোবাইল দেখতে ছোট হলেও এতে মুহুর্তের মধ্যে এত কিছু করে ফেলতে পারে কেননা এর ভিতরে DSP(Digital Signal Processor) এর কারণেই আজকের মোবাইল এত স্মার্ট হয়েছে!

ডুপ্লেক্স চ্যানেল (Duplex channel) কি?

মোবাইল ফোন ডুপ্লেক্স চ্যানেল (Duplex channel) ব্যাবহার করে৷ আপনি হয়তোবা ওয়াকিটকি যা পুলিশ সার্জেন্টরা ব্যাবহার করে৷ এই ওয়াকিটকি সিঙ্গেল চ্যানেল ব্যাবহার করে৷ যার ফলে শুধু মাত্র কথা বলা কিংবা শোনা সম্ভব৷ এক সাথে দুইজনেই কথা বলা ও শোন সম্ভব নয়৷ যেমন ওয়াকিটকি তে সার্জেন্টরা কথা বলা শেষ করে ওভার শব্দটি বলে৷ তা শুনে অপরপক্ষ তখন কথা বলে৷ কিন্তু

মোবাইল ফোনে ডুপে-ক্স চ্যানেল ব্যাবহার হবার কারণে, আপনি ফোনের মতই এক সাথে কথা বলতে ও শুনতে পারেন৷

GSM কি?

জিএসএম একটি আন্তর্জাতিক স্ট্যান্ডার্ড যা মূলত ইউরোপ, এশিয়া, আমেরিকা, আফ্রিকা ও অষ্ট্রেলিয়াতে বহুল পরিমানে ব্যাবহৃত হয়৷ বাংলাদেশে এই জিএসএম এর প্রচলন খুব বেশী৷ গ্রামীণ ফোনও এই জিএসএম ব্যাবহার করে৷ জিএসএম ইউরোপ ও এশিয়াতে ৯০০ মেগাহার্জ থেকে ১৮০০ মেগাহার্জ এ চলে এবং আমেরিকাতে ১৯০০ মেগাহার্জ এ চলে৷ জিএসএম ফোন কিনে আপনি বাংলাদেশে ব্যবহার করতে হলে আপনাকে শুধু সিম কার্ড SIM (Subscriber indenification module) কিনতে হবে৷ এই সিম কার্ড মূলত ছোট একটা চিপ এর মত দেখতে, যার ভিতরে মোবাইল কম্পানির সংযোগ আইডি ও ব্যাবহারকরীর তথ্য সংরক্ষীত থাকে৷ ফলে যে
কোন সেটে আপনার সিম কার্ডটি ঢুকিয়ে নিয়ে তত্‍ক্ষণাত তা আপনার সেটা হিসাবে কাজ করবে৷
