Academic Improvement Scholarship

Description: The Academic Improvement Scholarship is designed to reward students who show significant improvement in academics despite performing poorly in previous academic years.

Amount: Senate is proud to offer two $500 scholarships to two qualifying students each semester

Eligibility: To qualify for the scholarship, students must have had a GPA below 2.75 at least two semesters ago and have since improved their GPA from that former GPA. Applicants must have made significant improvements to their GPA and taken steps to to ensure they retain this academic success. Applicants may apply for the Academic Improvement Scholarship as many times as they wish, but once an individual has been awarded the scholarship, he/she may not be awarded the scholarship a second time.

Summer 2012 Wofford Denius Music Industry Internship Grants

The Communication Career Services Office is accepting applications for the Wofford Denius Music Industry Internship Grants for the summer 2012 application period.

College of Communication students may receive an $8,000 grant to pursue any music-related summer internships located in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, or New York City.

Scholarship Deadline: Monday, April 30 2012 at 11:59 PM EST

Award Amount: $5,000 non-renewable. Each scholarship prize will be in the form of a check made payable to the accredited post-secondary institution of higher education attended by the scholarship prize recipient (once the scholarship prize recipient has enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution of higher education and submitted proof of enrollment to the sponsor). Scholarship prize recipients must submit proof of enrollment on or before September 10, 2012. Previous winners may not re-apply.

E. D. Farmer International Fellowships for Texans and Mexican Nationals

Objective
The Texas Legislature created the E. D. Farmer International Fellowship with the purpose of building friendship and fostering goodwill between Texas and Mexico. This fellowship provides financial support to conduct research, fieldwork, or studies in Mexico or to undertake undergraduate or graduate studies or research activities at The University of Texas at Austin.

Eligibility
The E. D. Farmer International Fellowship is limited to applicants from Mexico and Texas. Candidates must submit their applications under one of the following categories:

1) Mexican students applying to UT Austin
Eligible students are Mexican citizens who are applying to an undergraduate or graduate program at UT Austin. Awardees are eligible for in-state tuition and receive a lump-sum award for use during the academic year. Stipends vary from year to year but average $4,000 per student.

Mexican students who are applying to UT are not eligible to apply online. Please send your application to the Mexican Center address listed below.

2) Mexican students currently studying at UT Austin
Eligible students are Mexican citizens currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program at UT Austin. If the fellowship is requested to support living expenses, the awardee is eligible for in-state tuition and receives a lump-sum award for use during the academic year. Stipends vary from year to year but average $4,000 per student. If the fellowship is requested to support research in Mexico, funding will depend on the research budget presented by the applicant. Exchange program students are not eligible for the award.

3) Applicants from the State of Texas
Eligible applicants from the State of Texas are students who have satisfactorily completed at least two years of study at an accredited college or university, with one year having been completed at UT Austin. This fellowship can only be used to support research conducted in Mexico. The award varies according to the research budget.

Headliners Foundation is one of the most prestigious scholarships in the state, not just because of the money awarded, but because of the recognition provided. Students are invited to an awards luncheon in Austin each fall. In addition, this year the Foundation will identify other ways to mentor scholars throughout the year.

The Headliners Foundation, associated with the Headliners Club in Austin, has been awarding scholarships to outstanding students interested in journalism for close to thirty years.

In awarding the scholarships, the Foundation considers first of all the talent for and the commitment to journalism as demonstrated in an application essay and the applicant’s involvement with journalism either professionally or on campus. The Foundation also considers grades and the recommendations of teachers or professional journalists. Financial need is taken into consideration only when all other qualities are considered equal.

Past scholarship recipients include reporters, producers, authors, photographers and journalists around the country.

The 2012-2013 FAFSA is now available!

Not only is the FAFSA essential for getting loans and grants, it's also very important for scholarships from the College of Communication. If you want to be considered for any need-based scholarships from the College of Communication for the upcoming academic year, it is vital that you submit your 2012-2013 FAFSA.

A lot of our scholarships list financial need as one of many criteria, so "need-based scholarship" doesn't mean that you have to be the neediest kid on the block to get the scholarship. But, you can't be considered for anything that lists need as a required factor if you don't fill out a FAFSA. In other words, if you ever find yourself thinking "Gee, I wish UT would give me some more money," FILL OUT THE FAFSA. There is no downside to filling this form out.

The College of Communication recommends that you submit the FAFSA by March 8 to ensure your information is available by the time we make our scholarship decisions (our scholarship application will be available in March - stay tuned!), and the University's priority FAFSA deadline is March 15.

The Office of Student Financial Services is holding some help sessions for the FAFSA. All sessions will be held in MEZ 2.120. Check this web page to see what you need to bring to the session.

AG Bell College Scholarship Program

The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) offers several scholarships for full-time students who are deaf and hard of hearing and who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited mainstream college or university. This is a merit-based scholarship program and award selection is extremely competitive; over the past three years 10-12% of applicants were selected to receive an award. While the number and value of awards varies from year to year, in 2011, 142 eligible applications were reviewed for 18 awards, which ranged from $1,000 to $10,000.

The 2012 College Scholarship Program is currently accepting applications for the 2012-2013 academic year.

AWM Austin is proud to award scholarships to college juniors and seniors studying media or a related field at an Austin or San Marcos area university.

We are currently accepting applications for the 2011-2012 AWM College Scholarship.

The 2011-2012 scholarship is open to those who:

* Have completed 75+ hours of college course work by December 2011

* Have an overall GPA of 3.25 or higher or a 3.0 or higher in declared major courses (on a 4.0 scale)

* Are currently enrolled as a full-time student (carrying a minimum of 12 hours per semester) at an Austin or San Marcos area university, with a declared major in radio, television, film, public relations, advertising, communications or broadcasting.

The $1000 scholarship is to be used for either undergraduate or graduate tuition and will be administered by the respective Financial Aid Office of the recipient.

Scholarship deadline is Friday, March 9, 2012, and the recipient will be announced by Monday, March 19, 2012.

Jesse Copeland Austin Amateur Radio Club Scholarship

Austin Amateur Radio Club Scholarship Program

A one-time payment of an amount to be determined will be awarded to those students who hold a valid amateur radio operator’s license and have a 3.0 (B) grade average. Students must be from the Central Texas area or connected with the Austin Amateur Radio Club.

Application Deadline: January 31

Selection Criteria:

1. Proof of amateur radio license – copy attached.
2. Academic preparedness – an official transcript from an accredited high school or college/university needs to be submitted.
3. Extra – curricular activities – list activities on form.
4. Work experience – on form
5. Financial need – on form
6. Essay – Include the college(s) selected, full time or part-time student, career goal if known or primary areas of interest, and give some indication of the motivation of the applicant. Length of essay ranges from one paragraph to one page (max).

Applications will be reviewed in February. Scholarship amounts will vary year to year depending on the endowment earnings and the number of applicants. Payment will be made directly to the scholarship recipient’s college of choice.

Scholarship Recipients will be notified by mail.

The Travis Memorial Scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing a career in one of the following professions: landscape design/golf course architecture; golf course turf grass management/golf course superintendent; professional golf management, club professional, or sports journalism with a special interest in golf.

In addition, as part of our effort to promote amateur golf, outstanding amateur college/university golfers are eligible for our scholarship awards, based on their competitive record as an amateur golf, and criteria listed below. Amateur golfer applicants are not restricted to any particular college program or career goal.

Applicants for The Walter J. Travis Memorial Scholarship must be enrolled/matriculated as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited two- or four-year college/university, in a program of study that will prepare the student for a career in one of the above-mentioned professions.

The following criteria will be used in the evaluation and judging of all applicants:

-Academic record

-Involvement in golf-related interests and activities

Jo Caldwell Meyer Scholarship

Applications are now being accepted for the Jo Caldwell Meyer Scholarship, The Association for Women in Communications Austin Chapter’s annual student scholarship. This year, we are pleased to award three $3,000 scholarships to full-time undergraduates who demonstrate excellence in the study of communications. Winners will be recognized at AWC Austin’s Annual Banner Brunch in April.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

1. Full-time student status (minimum of 12 hours)

William B. Ruggles Right to Work Scholarship

The William B. Ruggles Right to Work Scholarship honors the esteemed Texas journalist who coined the phrase “Right to Work” and contributed greatly to the movement’s advancement. A $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually to the student who exemplifies the dedication to principle and high journalistic standards of the late Mr. Ruggles.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

The scholarship is awarded on the basis of scholastic ability and a demonstrated interest in the work of the Institute. Applicants must also:

Demonstrate potential for the successful completion of the educational requirements in an accredited journalism program by submitting a transcript or copy of acceptance letter from the school you are or will attend;
Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of voluntary unionism and the economic and social problems of compulsory unionism by submitting an essay of approximately 500 words.

The Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies FLAS Fellowship applications are available for Summer 2012 and the 2012-2013 Academic Year.
