Future of the Utah PMA - Lunch on March 14th

Hello, Utah Product Management Association members!

You may have noticed things have been quiet on the UPMA front. Well, it's time to break the silence with a lunch on March 14th.

In the past few years, the UPMA has brought you presentations, lunches, and pcamps. Now it is time to discuss what comes next and, frankly, who is going to help us get there. We will be discussing leadership, activities, funding, volunteers and everything else that goes along with keeping a group like UPMA running.

Please come join us at Wingers Roadhouse Grill in Lehi (map) from 11:30am to 1pm. RSVPs are appreciated (but not required) to make sure we have room set aside for everybody. Just reply to this message with a quick 'yes' to mark your spot.

ProductCamp is a FREE collaborative, community organized unconference, focused on Product Management and Marketing. It’s a great opportunity to learn from and network with professionals involved in Product Management and Marketing in Utah and surrounding areas.

ProductCamp is about smart, passionate people coming together to discuss issues they face every day. Everyone interested in improving their ability to conceive, build, manage, launch and market products is welcome. Everyone brings different experiences and leveraging that collective knowledge is what makes ProductCamp special—and something you can’t get from any other gathering.

Just a quick reminder: PCamp Utah is tomorrow! If you have not signed up yet, it is not too late. There is still space available (really, we won't turn anybody away!). Voting on sessions is also still underway, so if you want to get a feel for the types of presentations that will be given, visit the session list. If there is a topic you want to learn about that isn't represented, sign up to lead a roundtable breakout. You spend a few minutes setting up the scenario, split into smaller groups, and let the rest of the attendees come up with "the answer". A great way to solve that vexing problem you've been struggling with. See you tomorrow!

Have you ever attended an industry conference or company event and felt like you could have done it much better? Do you feel industry conferences have become too "sterile" or dominated by big vendors? Would you like an opportunity to learn from the many knowledgable product manager and marketers we have in the area? Do you want to share what you are doing right and find out what you are doing wrong?

ProductCamps were designed to solve this problem. ProductCamp is a user-driven, collaborative unconference for Product Managers and Marketers. Having occurred in locations like Silicon Valley, Cambridge, Austin, Atlanta, and Toronto, ProductCamp has come to Utah!

Best of all, ProductCamp Utah does not cost anything to attend and to become a better product manager. However, while it doesn't cost, attendance is not "free". There are no passive attendees. Instead, everyone is referred to as a participant and can help contribute in some way, whether that is volunteering to set up or presenting on a topic you care deeply about or just attending with an attitude of sharing.

Product Camps have sprung up around the nation as an opportunity for product development professionals to meet and interact with other product development professionals and, most importantly, to learn from them. We aren't quite ready to announce all the details, but while we tidy up some details, make sure to save the date:

Quarterly Meeting on May 12th with Dr. Gary K. Rhoads

Set aside May 12th from 6-8pm for the next UtahPMA quarterly meeting. We will be honored to have Dr. Gary K. Rhoads share with us how successful entrepreneurs market their business with ideas from his 2009 book "Boom Start: Super Laws of Successful Entrepreneurs." He will teach us his model for how entrepreneurs should to rate their new business idea, and how to make those ideas a booming success.

Dr. Rhoads holds a PhD in Marketing from Texas Tech University and is currently the Stephen Mack Covey Professor of Marketing and Associate Director of the Center of Entrepreneurship & Technology at Brigham Young University. He presently works with start-up companies on crafting marketing strategies that accelerate company growth. Professor Rhoads was the founding partner of Direct1.com (sold to Computer Science Corp in 1999), Co-founder of Zachary Douglass, as well as Co-founder and past Chairman of the Board of Allegiance. Currently, Rhoads serves on the board of advisors for the Center of Economic Development and Opportunity to help start-up firms successfully launch in Utah. In addition to Boom Start, Rhoads is the co-author of Becoming a Plus-One Leader that highlights the best leadership and marketing practices of successful entrepreneurs.

Product Management Job Description

The Product Manager is responsible for the product planning and execution throughout the product lifecycle, including: gathering and prioritizing product and customer requirements, and working closely with engineering, sales, marketing, partner relations and support to ensure revenue and customer satisfaction goals are met. The Product Manager's job also includes ensuring that the product supports the company's overall strategy and goals.

The Product Manager is expected to:

Define the product strategy and roadmap
Responsible for development of Product Plan Document
Manage the entire product line life cycle from strategic planning to tactical activities
Deliver MRDs and PRDs with prioritized features and corresponding justification based on multiple information feeds (e.g., customers, partners, corporate strategy, etc.)
Work with external third-parties to assess partnerships and licensing opportunities
Run beta and pilot programs with early-stage products and samples
Participate in forecasting
Oversee customer-driven development process
Intimate knowledge of competitive roadmap, products, and business model
Act as a leader within the company

Required experience and knowledge

Bachelor's degree (MBA or technical field preferred)
5+ years of experience in a job in the computer industry (high performance computing, grid and cloud computing experience preferred)
Minimum of 3 years experience as a Product Manager, Product Marketing Manager or related position in a technology field
Technical background, with experience in software engineering (specifically AGILE/SCRUM software development)
Must be able to travel up to 40% of the time both domestically and internationally
Examples and at least one sample of an effective document delivered in the past
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent teamwork skills
Demonstrated success defining and launching excellent products
Demonstrated success in continually improving existing products and product lines
Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams without formal authority
Demonstrated technical knowledge of product space
Ability to effectively articulate critical product requirements engineering
Demonstrates business and financial acumen
Demonstrates customer interaction
Demonstrates analytical skills
