What can we do on sunday when it rains?

1 - stay at the window watching the rain fall down;
2 - lie in our bed (trivially) listening to the football commentary on the radio;
3 - root around the UtopicMusic archive searching for "rainy music" to listen to.

Well guys, as you can probably hear, today I chose the third option. And so, for the benefit of our lazy and sleepy ears, you're now listening to Linz's artistic intransigence.
I live in a suburb and - moreover - I'm a tedious afternoon rain prisoner. But I'm travelling to a claustrophobic metropolis, to labyrinthine streets. I'm travelling without a real leaving ... and without a clear destination (listen to the beautiful and unstructured "Populus alba" blues to understand what the hell I'm talking about).

November, rainy days.

To appreciate Linz's music, to enjoy "A Miles distance (and so)", "Buongiorno tristezza" or "Sole toscano" ... it's really worth reviewing the bewildered, visionary and violent Andrej Tarovskij's soundtracks.
An erudite quote indeed. But sometimes, I just can't help it.

A very special girl

I have long been looking for a female artist to write about, and today I'm happy to report that my eyes (and my ears!) have finally focused on a very special girl from Portland.
Anomie Belle (aka Toby Campbell) started her musical cereer as a classical violinist. But over the years she showed to be an artist of many talents... and she's now playing and singing all around the world with a growing number of musicians.

You're now listening to a selection of songs from Sleeping Patterns, the album that Anomie Belle kindly sent us some weeks ago. It sounds like a crossroads of electronic styles such as trip-hop and neo-soul. But we can't (and we don't want to!) reduce her music by enclosing it with a definition. Listening to music is always the best way go!
So... inside Sleeping Patterns we find the lonelyness of our soul, human inability to communicate, and the sense of helplessness and annihilation in the face of mass media... These topics are so dear to the American and European culture. And, well, these songs are really telling us our story with an elegant, sometimes sad, sometimes melancholic... but always sensual voice.

Anomie career is quite impressive. For example, she toured with a guy better known as Tricky. Jump to her myspace or official website and discover all of her music!
Our opinion - which is also a wish - is that her future will be even better than the present day.

Christophe Marc and Le Galago: good music from France

Today I'm goin to talk 'bout a guy I discovered by chance. His name is Christophe Marc, and he's... a real volcano!! He's a solo artist and the leader of a band called Le Galago. Both of the projects are really interesting. His songs are very rich in different sounds, and the production itself is very rich and accurate.

It's not so common to find underground/unsigned bands whose recording, production and mixing level is so high up... And the songs are refined and catchy at the same time.
The ones we uploaded in our player are a clear example of it. "Are you Ready" comes from the omonymous Le Galago's last album, while the other three ones come from Marc's solo albums "My Misfit Ways" and "Pressure", the latter of which has just been released.
Marc's voice deserves a special mention. It's deep, warm and, in my opinion, very dark and "eighty". I think this French guy who sings in English has an important future in front of him.

If you do like that, who knows, you might discover the slow flow of the river. Where the haste does not really make any sense...

You're just listening to Manhan's roots Japanese music. Something really different from the kinf of sounds we usually share with you. A blend of modern synths and ancient, ancestral instruments.
We shared Manhan's music in the past too. So - as second song - you'll find another track called "Tenku".

I don't know what's the best way start a new week. But well, if you need some kind of reconciliation with this creazy world, listen to these attenuated and evocative notes...

a day in the soup

Dear utopicmusic friends....

Today, before going to play with my band (oh yeah...it happens to me sometimes, too!) I decided to share with you a simply delicious song.
It's titled A Day in the soup, from a Norvegian band called Ping.
This histrionic gang is an old acquaintance of our blog, but recently they sent me a lot of music to listen to. And so, here i am!
Today is a gray day. It rains, it stops raining, it's raining again. I don't know if this song can be adapted to this unclear, contradictory climatic situation.
In any case, this song reminds me so much the The Radar Bros' sound. I spent a whole long winter traveling by car and listening to And the Surrounding Mountains, the Radar Bros' seco third album. Well guys, A Day in the Soup has the same discharged intensity, the same magic. When the keyboards and the charleston start... well... I get the shivers.

But Ping's music is not ending here! Listen to the following Hick in the Mall, or to the psychedelic Mr. Will B, or again to Corny Crack Jimmy, which alternates humor and lyricism into a five-mad-minutes-song.
Finally, there are still My New Friend, Franz and Can You Sing?. In fact, we had already entered these three songs long ago and today they're reproposed.

a lucky coincidence

Hello everyone!
About ten days ago something really pleasing happened to me. I logged in myspace - looking for new music to write about into the blog - and checking out the mailbox I found the request of an artist. His name was Zoon van snooK
He wrote: 'I've added you since you are a Bibio's fan".
LOL! Bibio's "Ambivalence Avenue" had been my daily August soundtrack. So I accepted Zoon's request and took a tour in his myspace.
"Wow, he's from Bristol" I thought. And so Massive Attack, Tricky and Bansky came to my mind suddently.
Then, I rolled over the mouse on Z.V.S.'s personal informations and found this sentence: "after spending some time smear testing peacocks for the Lebanese government, I realized at the age of 24 that the truth was stranger, that is to say less Prevalent Than Fiction".
Without missing the beat I played "Bibliophone"... and it was love at first sight.

Well, you're now listening to Zoon van snooK just like me, and I hope you're falling in love like I did.
He plays experimental, mechanical noise electronic music, mixed and contaminated by ambient moments and some relaxing, peaceful atmospheres. By the way, he performed with Malahai, Canola Tenderfoot, Diego Chavez, Ernest Gonzales, Toob, Boca 45, Fujiya & Miyagi, Lost Idol, Dextro...
So come on guys, It's really worth listening and - if you like - tell you're friends to do the same. Every talented artist needs to fly!

elephants and castles

Hi there guys,
it's a great pleasure for us to share three tracks by the Swedish pianist and composer Matti Bye.
Matti later effort is the soundtrack of "Everlasting Moment", by Jan Troell. But he began his career long time ago, first as the accompanist for silent films all around Europe, and later becoming the soundtrack composter of some Swedish films as "Phantom Carriage" and "Gosta Berling's Saga" with Greta Garbo.
What can I say? You should really listen to him now...!

These soundtrack compositions bring me back to my childhood, carrying my soul to enchanted landscapes.
Elephant & Castle - in particular - evokes the dream of an old medieval fortress, in a winter mood. There - like a magic - I can smell the snow...

Dear UtopicMusic fonds, is this dream trying to tell me something new? Is the summer really ending? I hope so. I can't resist the call of this reassuring winter dream!

the sun is rising...

I came back from Spain two weeks ago and I preferred to stay away from my computer for a while. I needed to detoxify and, to be totally honest, I'm not shure about the result! ;-)
But somewhere, somehow, inevitably, we must start over. Take back our lives and move forward.

So here is Manuzik - a Japanese artist discovered on Jamendo long time ago - with his dreamy Rising and an an urban and enigmatic Tribal Dub. He's inviting us to take the necessary steps. "Come on guys, the sun is rising again... "
It's funny how an Italian boy, coming back from Spain, is ending to meet a Japanese artist! But listen to "Rising" till the end and you'll find a Spanish mood inside it. A "rising", pressing Spanish mood, featured by Manuzik from Japan, for the benefit of Mr Trevisan, who came back from Spain who weeks ago.
