What do we need, when the days seem to be always the same?
I'm not so wise to actually know what your needs are, during a greyish day.

What I can give you is a anti-tedium menu, based on some good music. And today such a menu is extraordinarily rich:

horsd'oeuvre: Manhan (Japan)
first course: One Chef (Sweden)
second course: Mijagi (Poland)
side dish: Pandacetamol (Scotland)
fruit: Lu-Sin (Argentina)
sweets: Senpai (Italy)

UtopicMusic international menu: no matter about your tastes, your cash availability or your expectations... you'll enjoy it!

Have a good meal, and see you soon!

Carlo Trevisan

PS: Artists permanently (and randomly) "on air" at present date: Manhan (Japan), One Chef (Sweden), Mijagi (Poland), Pandacetamol (Scotland), Lu-Sin (argentina), Thomas Solgaard (Denmark), Wonderboy (France), Gimme 'hat Moonshine (Belgium), Krakenti (Latvia), Wheelchair Discotheque (Latvia), TheOneOnTheIsland (Slovakia), Maok (Slovakia), LaBon (Slovakia), Jordan Jordan (Slovakia), Social Society (Slovakia), Batte (Norway), Orange Crush (Norway), Oriental Music System (Hong Kong), Iamsum (Hong Kong), Rex Cody (Hong Kong), Donkey Valium (Hong Kong), Smiling Buddhas (Hong Kong), O-M (Hong Kong), Hvoya (Ukraine), Automatic Pilot Required (Brazil), Yogi (Brazil), Light Merchants (South Africa), Los Hermanos Butaca (Argentina), La Biyuya (Argentina), Negro Fluo (Argentina), Sempai (Italy), Riccardo Vianello (Italy), Wolther goes stranger (Italy), Eildentroeilfuorieilbox84 (Italy), Buzz Aldrin (Italy).
Buzz Aldrin landed back on earth...

Hi there my friends,
today I'm happy to share with you my experience about the Buzz Aldrin show at the ChioggiaLab, June 01 2009.

Buzz Aldrin - aka Nico, Gelo and Giallo - are a new dangerous team from Bologna, Italy. Their music (you're now listening to their first five-shots demo) is a strong after dinner cocktail, a mixture of new/no wave, noisy punk.... and an innate talent above all.
As you probably know, Buzz Aldrin was the second man to walk on the moon. But now... well... I want to make clear that their show at the ChioggiaLab was just second to none. I've rarely seen such an impressive and powerful live act...
I took some photos during the show. Then I got happily drunk. Well, raise the volume and give them a look.

A picture is worth a thousand words... they say, and the Buzz Aldrin dazzling music is even better!

Welcome back to earth guys...

Stay tuned!
A dandy called Wolther

On June the 1st we co-organized, along with "I Druidi" and the guys of Chioggialab, a nice indie festival. We had the possibility to see four great bands playing. With this post, we start dealing with them. The first project we are going to talk about is "Wolther goes stranger". The guy behind this name is Luca Mazzieri, which plays also with "A Classic Education".
I must say that I never listened to his music befor the gig. Well, the show is really amazing: with the help of Massimo at the drums, Luca built up a smart and strong texture of synthetic groove, long ethereal keyboards, whispers and acoustic percussions. And all of this is obtained using piano, voice, a Roland mc 307, some other old market's instruments and minimalistic drums. When I saw Massimo playing a cymbal with an electric drill, thus obtaining a sound which was perfect for the song atmosphere (and they do not play industrial music...), I got really astonished! Take the Pet Shop Boys, take off all the exceeding honey and substitute it with some elegant, clever and ironic experimentation, and you'll have an idea of this music.
After the festival I listened to their myspace, and I must say that the recordings are as cool as the live show. Here we have the possibility to upload on the player two brand new songs: "so sad" - even sad people can dance, they say... - and an original and pleasantly unrecognizable cover of a song by Leonard Cohen, "I'm your man". The former will be included in Wolther's next album, to be probably released in September. Thank you guys for giving us the chance to broadcast your music!

Cheers,

Fiorenzo Fuolega

Today we'll take a little pause. No more new exciting discoveries, but a look to the past, to those great artists we found surfing the web during the last months.

The cook is listening to music....

A very rich meal, based on sounds and echoes from far away worlds that are so different one from each other. We'll mix them up in order to obtain a new dish. Our ingredients are not the prepacked music of the majors: they're genuine. The difference is the same as the one between a coke and a good glass of wine, or a fast food sandwich and a healthy spaghetti.

Ingredients: Yogi the creazy alchimist from Brazil, the freewheeling and humorous Wonderboy from France, Thomas Solgaard and his sensual atmospheres from Denmark...

Cook: Mr. Carlo Trevisan

Dish name: "genuine music meets the Italian spaghetti boy"

Enjoy!

PS: excuse me for my culinary mania ... which is typical of the Italians! ;-)

PS (part 2): remember that all the artists we're going to talk about in the new posts will always be "on air" in the blog: just let the player go on after the first songs, which will be dedicated to the new post spotlight, and then all the old posts songs will be broadcasted in random mode...

Lorenzo Lemme is a member of Eildentroeilfuorieilbox84, a folk-core band that is part of the underground Roman scene. Rocco, Davide and Riccardo interviewed him before the band's live show at Chioggialab, on May the 23th.
Here it is a short abstract of the interview, and some tunes that we uploaded on our player.

Interviewers (I). Let's start from Ananab, your new album...
Lorenzo (L). The album has been released in April amd we have just started promoting it. Perhaps one of its main feature is that Ananab sound is very close to our live one. It's not a very simple thing to obtain. Thanks to Fabio Recchia, the album producer, we got it...

I. Your music has been often defined "nonsense"... but we can find a lot of sense in it... The lyrics are ironic and never banal... they're really interesting!
L. We stake so much on lyrics and contents. We don't want to be "heavy" in our way of expression. Our "nonsense" is not such. We have a lot of things to say, and in our lyrics there's so much of what we are.

I. So irony for you is a way of expression...
L: It is so. Nonsense is part of our style, through which we try to avoid becoming "heavy". In short, let's say that we try to be funny "in the beginning"... but if someone wants to go deeper inside our music, he can find a lot of contents.

I. We saw that your music is released using Creative Commons.
L. Of course. We like the idea that anyone could burn our CD so that our music could spread more easily. We need our music to be known by as much people as possible... and the Creative Commons are clever licenses that can let us reach our goal. Furthermore, we don't love the SIAE (the Italian agency that manages copyright). There's too much bureaucracy, the system is a huge corporation, everything is so complicated. On the contrary, we would like that music diffusion could be as free as possible. So the Creative Commons are welcome...

I. We agree with you, and our previous interviews showed us that so many bands agree with you as well. It's clear that every band tries to play live shows as often as possible, in order to make their music spread. The Creative Commons licenses help doing it, no doubt.
L. You see... three days ago, during another interview, we underlined that the use of a Creative Commons license to release our album made us become something more than a simply "self-producted" band. We became part of something bigger... let's call it a big movement that is fighting for a free music in the web, without any "out-of-time" barrier.

UtopicMusic blog would like to say thanks to Eildentroeilfuorieilbox84, who gave us the possibility to publish their interview and broadcast some of their music in our web-player.
Furthermore, it's a pleasure for the UtopicMusic staff to collaborate with the guys of Chioggialab (Rocco, Davide and Riccardo...), which is an open space where you can see fantastic live shows. Thanks to their kindness, we have been able to take some pictures of the band and publish a part of their interview.

The gig is over, some time has passed... but we like to tell something more about the recent past, so that these "little-big" happenings could leave some traces...

Ironic and creative music from Rome, Creative Commons licenses, open spaces where creativity can grow and spread...
We are waiting for you, on this blog, for some brand new adventures!

Keep in touch

Today, in my first post on this blog, I'm going to talk about Senpai, a pop band from Genoa. They deal cleverly with both acoustic and electric sounds: I find them really fresh and creative.

A song of theirs is not made of the usual pop “formulas”: they often use elegant puns and sounds that recall the British pop band XTC. So in their music we can find strong relationship with the roots of pop music and, at the same time, an open-mindedness that represents for their tunes a guarantee of long and lasting life.

The Gimme 'hat Moonshine's "soul-ful" music video...

Today we're inviting you to watch something special.
Some days ago Gimme 'hat Moonshine (Belgium) told me about his new Désespérée music video.
So, while I was glad to share with you Désespérée last year - a melacholic and "soul-ful" piano melody without words - I'm even happier today.
The music video tells the story better than me... So, all I can say is: "that's a sad story".
Our utopic travel is a neverending affair ;-) Sweet, sad, sometimes noisy, sometimes melancholic music from all around the world.

Just pause the web player, start the video... and enjoy this little "meraviglia".

If you enjoyed the video, don't forget to click the "artist page" button into the web player and check out the Gimme 'hat Moonshine myspace...

All the best
PS: Remember that all the artists we're going to talk about in the new posts will always be "on air" in the blog: just let the player go on after the first songs, which will be dedicated to the new post spotlight, and then all the old posts songs will be broadcasted in random mode...!

Artists permanently (and randomly) "on air" at present date: Gimme 'hat Moonshine (Belgium), Krakenti (Latvia), Wheelchair Discotheque (Latvia), TheOneOnTheIsland (Slovakia), Maok (Slovakia), LaBon (Slovakia), Jordan Jordan (Slovakia), Social Society (Slovakia), Oriental Music System (Hong Kong), Iamsum (Hong Kong), Rex Cody (Hong Kong), Donkey Valium (Hong Kong), Smiling Buddhas (Hong kong), O-M (Hong Kong), Hvoya (Ukraine), Batte (Norway), Orange Crush (Norway), Automatic Pilot Required (Brazil), La Biyuya (Argentina), Light Merchants (South Africa), Los Hermanos Butaca (Argentina), Negro Fluo (Argentina), Riccardo Vianello (Italy).

Metropolitan melancholy, alpine landscapes

The Hong Kong music we're going to host in the blog will be with us during this slow and silent walk.
That island is ruled by the smog and the noise of the streets.
Anyway, that noise is not so different from the silence of an alpine forest, which is broken only by the wind that rustles the leaves, or the torrents murmur. One goes there suddenly, trying to follow the water flow.

The artists taking part in this firework-like and melancholic playlist are: Oriental Music System, Iamsum, Rex Cody, Donkey Valium, Smiling Buddhas, O-M.
This night I cannot find so many words to describe them. So I prefer to "talk" about them by using a picture. A memory of mine that fits well with their music, no matter the not well understandable, but nevertheless actual reasons for it.
Here they are some sounds that come from a faraway galaxy, which is as melancholic as my beloved mountains.

Dream & Enjoy
The fields are colored with yellow flowers, along the road I go everyday, in the midday light.
The trees are budding and clouds of pollen are floating in the air.
It's spring.

Just one year ago Hvoya sent me her songs. Yes, one year has already passed. At that time it was spring as well. And today, just like last year, I get surprised while listening to her voice and to the woven melodies that her music gives us.
Hvoya's music is boundary music. Her voice is overthere, on that invisible, mysterious line... that divides the East from the West.
Hvoya sings to the West from a faraway place. But her singing is also so much far away from Japan, or the Middle East. Nevertheless, all these places are inside her music.
Let you be taken away by Hvoya's voice, and reach her to the boundary. From that place, every journey is possible, no matter what's the destination.

I'm sure that it's worth doing...!

       Carlo Trevisan

PS: Remember that all the artists we're going to talk about in the new posts will always be "on air" in the blog: just let the player go on after the first songs, which will be dedicated to the new post spotlight, and then all the old posts songs will be broadcasted in random mode...!
