Champagne’s 2011 harvest has commenced. The harvest of grapes from the carefully delineated plots of the Champagne region officially began on August 19, 2011. The combination of an exceptionally early flowering, limited spring rainfall and many sunny days has led to one of the earliest harvests for Champagne since 1822. The three prominently planted grape varieties – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier – are now being hand-picked across the appellation located approximately 90 miles northeast of Paris. Weather conditions and forecasts are favorable for the next few days, with only a few thunderstorms on the horizon.

“The Champagne appellation is one of a kind, and the grapes being picked today are the only grapes that can be used to make Champagne,” says Sam Heitner, director of the Champagne Bureau in the United States. “As we celebrate another successful harvest from this unique region, we are reminded of the importance that location plays in every bottle of wine and renew our call on the United States to join the majority of the rest of the world in reserving the term Champagne only for wines made with grapes from this specific place.“

There are many sparkling wines made around the world, but the Champagne only comes from Champagne. In addition to allowing grapes to be grown only in a limited number of plots within the region and requiring harvest by hand, the Champagne appellation has strict regulations regarding all aspects of the cycle – from the planting of the vine through harvest, pressing and bottling – all designed to ensure quality for consumers. The grapes picked today will go into non-vintage wines that sit on the lees for at least eighteen months, reserve wines for future non-vintages or, if the producer deems this year’s harvest worthy, vintages that remain in the caves for at least three years.

“This year, the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC), the region’s trade body, has raised the amount of grapes that can be harvested in a given area to 12,500 kilograms per hectare (kg/ha),” says Heitner. “They believe that this will keep Champagne on track to meet the growing demand. This is good news for Champagne enthusiasts everywhere, as more people will be able to enjoy real Champagne, which can only come from Champagne, France.”

Have a question about harvest? Thibaut Le Mailloux, CIVC communications director, will be providing on-the-ground responses from Champagne to a limited number of questions through Google Moderator. You can also send questions through Twitter (#Champagne) or Facebook, or email them directly to champagne@clsdc.com. To be considered, all questions must be submitted by Wednesday, August 31.

2007 Mi Sueño Cabernet Sauvignon

I had the opportunity to taste through all the current releases from Mi Sueño winery a few days back and can honestly say that every one of the wines was impressive. However, I chose to review the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon because it's probably the best bottle of red wine that I've tasted year to date. In all seriousness.....it blew my mind.

The 2007 Mi Sueño Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and was sourced from vineyards located in Napa's Coomsville appellation. It was aged for 21 months in French oak.

On the nose I got stunning notes of black currant, blackberry, peppercorn, coco powder, and hints of espresso bean. It's textbook Napa valley floor fruit and has just the most subtle dried herb and pepper aromas that combine perfectly with the dark fruit notes.

On the palate the wine touches down with a powerful and concentrated structure and amazing black fruit flavors. The black currant and blackberry flavors are backed up by notes of chocolate, tar, vanilla-toast, and a touch of cinnamon. The tannin structure and backbone of this wine suggest that it will age gracefully for at least a decade. It's a dry wine, made in a classic style; devoid of over-extraction or over-ripe fruit flavor. The finish sails on and on for about three to four minutes after tasting.

I can say with all honesty, that after tasting probably over a hundred 2007 Napa Cabernet's in the last year, that this wine is easily the best of the lot. 95+ points

Here's a couple of wines from Graffigna in Argentina. I've written recently
about the Pinot Grigio, and my amusement at an Italian grape and an
Italian name coming from Argentina. This really shouldn't be
surprising, since there was a lot of Italian emigration to Argentina,
and roughly 60% of Argentinians have some Italian heritage. Italian is
the second most spoken language in the country after Spanish.

South America has so many fascinating immigration stories, like
South Asians in Trinidad and Tobago or the influx of Japanese in Peru,
including former president Alberto Fujimori. But let's get back to the
wine...

Graffigna was founded in 1870 by Italian immigrant Don Santiago
Graffigna, and his wines were the first Argentine wines to be exported
abroad. There's an interesting history with the introduction of trains and radio and the devastating earthquake of 1944.

Oak-aged wines from the Estate’s reserve cellars are added to the blend, creating a multi-vintage cuvée in the traditional Roederer style. Only the cuvée (first pressing of 120 gallons/ton) is used; no premiere or deuxieme taille. The wine is then fermented at 65 degrees Fahrenheit in high-grade stainless steel tanks. Five percent Pinot Noir is added for color prior to secondary fermentation; no malolactic fermentation is used. Oak-aged reserve wines from the Estate’s cellars make up 10 to 20 percent of the Rosé cuvée.

The vineyard is planted to Dijon Clone Chardonnay and some Pinot Noir as well. This wine was aged in 100% French oak (40% new and 60% one and two year old) barrels for 10 months.

On the nose I get fantastic aromas of white donut-peach, guava, caramel ribbon candy, honey, toasted oak, and butterscotch. The bouquet is complex and from the moment I put the wine up to my nose I instantly new it was a high quality Chardonnay.

On the palate the wine touches down with a intense dose of baked apple, butterscotch, and toasted oak flavors. There are secondary notes of meyer lemon, mineral, and caramel that also impress. The acidity is well in balance and the wine finishes with long drawn out butterscotch and citrus notes. 92 points

Other Names: Picotin Blanc, Vionnier, Petiti Vionnier, Viogne, Galopine, Vugava bijela

The origin of this white grape variety is unknown but many believe it to be of Roman descent and perhaps was brought to the Rhone valley in France via the Rhone river en route to Beaujolais. In 2004 the grape was studied at the University of California Davis where DNA profiling found the grape to be closely related to the Piedmont grape Freisa and to be a genetic cousin to Nebbiolo.

Viognier is a difficult grape to grow and is prone to various vine diseases in particular powdery mildew. It has low and unpredictable yields and should be picked only when fully ripe. When picked too early, the grape fails to develop the full extent of its aromas and tastes. When picked too late, the grape produces wine that is oily and lacks perfume. When fully ripe the grapes have a deep yellow color and produce wine with a strong perfume and high in alcohol.

In France, Viognier is the single permitted grape variety in the appellations of Condrieu and Château Grillet. It is also often blended with Syrah in Northern Rhone in the Côte-Rôtie AOC. Since Viognier ripens earlier than Syrah, the grape is normally harvested separately and added to the Syrah during fermentation. One of the benefits of adding Viognier is the process of co-pigmentation that is produced which stabilizes the coloring of the red wine.

Viognier wines are well-known for their floral aromas, due to terpenes, which are also found in Muscat and Riesling wines. Viognier more than three years old tends to lose many of the floral aromas that make this wine unique. Aging these wines will often yield a very crisp drinking wine which is almost completely flat in the nose. Viognier is a grape with low acid and is often blended with grapes such as Syrah in order to soften the wines.

Compounds in Red Wine Fight Breast Cancer

This new study was reported by CBS News and can be found here.
The study, conducted on mice, also showed that resveratrol helps block the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the eye, such as that associated with macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in people over 50.
I hope the 2009 vintage can get close to the quality of the 2007, which I rated at 95 points. For some reason the Maldonado's don't put the tech data on their website for the "Parr Vineyard" Chard. However, I believe the wine is a very small production and well in-demand, so they don't necessarily need to publicize it too much.
The nose on this wine is busrsting with exquisite aromas of baked golden delicious apple, fig, almond, quince, meyer lemon, stone fruit, creme brulee, and a slight touch of mineral. It's a fantastically complex bouquet and one that improves as the wine warms to room temperature.

On the palate I get delicious and intense flavors of caramel apple, quince paste, fig, vanilla, tangerine peel, mineral, and hints of nectarine. The wine is perfectly weighted texture-wise and glides effortlessly across the palate. What makes this wine really special is it's acidity and how it is razor sharp on the finish. The wine is impeccably balanced and finishes with an intensity that rivals the best made Chardonnay's in the world. 95 points

The skinny on Dom Pérignon

Dom Pérignon or as the hommies like to call him "Dom P", was a Benedictine monk who, in 1668, was appointed treasurer at the Abbey of Hautvillers near the town of Epernay Champagne. Among Dom Pérignon's various duties was to oversee the running of the cellars and the winemaking, which in this time was considered to be of substantial importance.
He also was influential in the refinement of the art of blending wines from different vineyards and advances in clarification treatments to ensure a brighter wine than what was the murky norm at that time.

Many believe Dom Pérignon invented sparkling wine, but he actually devoted much of his time researching ways to avoid the dreaded re-fermentation that resulted in so many tempestuous wines.

Although his contributions to the history of wine are unquestionably warranted, Dom Pérignon did not invent Champagne.

It had never been used before to produce grapes, but with the mild climate that is heavily influenced by the proximity to the ocean, grapes were perfectly suited for the estate.

The 2009 Hacienda Araucano Syrah Reserva is composed of 100% Syrah from the Lolol Valley D.O.

This deeply colored red wine has a bouquet that displays aromas of earthy blackberry, eucalyptus, pencil led, and crushed rocks. I love the distinct terroir character that the wine exhibits, and in many ways it reminds me of some of the great Chilean Cabernet's I've had over the past decade. ( ie. Don Melchor)

On the palate the wine continues to show it's spiciness and peppery character, but the underlining black cherry, and rustic blackberry flavors are very nice indeed. The wine finishes nice and long, and has some firm and dry tannins. Very nice wine for the $13 suggested retail price. 89 points
Cakebread Cellars has had plenty of success throughout the years and I believe it's mainly because their wines are pretty damn consistent and maintain a high qualitative standard.

The 2009 Cakebread Sauvignon Blanc was sourced from several vineyards throughout the Napa Valley, but the majority of the wine is composed of fruit grown on their estate vineyards in Rutherford, Calistoga and Carneros. The wine is 91% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Semillon, and 4% Sauvignon Musque, and was fermented in 82% stainless steel and 18% French Oak. The wine was also 95% aged in neutral French oak for a total of 5 months.

On the nose I get what us wine geeks affectionately like to refer to as "cat pee" as well as hints of citrus peel, tangerine, mineral, and a touch of yeast or lees. It also carries a touch of white blossom aromas which I believe stems from the use of the musque clone.

On the palate the wine is very clean and precise, delivering flavors reminiscent of tangerine and mandarin, mineral, and a touch of lemon oil. The acidity is pretty remarkable for a wine made in the sunshine of Napa Valley, and the texture is rounded on the mid-palate from the use of neutral oak in the aging process. Overall this wine is a very solid effort and one that merits an above average rating. 90 points
This particular wine was sourced from the Carter Estate Vineyard and is made with the famous Spanish varietal of Tempranillo.

On the nose I get some really fresh and vibrant aromas of grapefruit, strawberry, red raspberry, and mineral. It's a very pretty and perfumed bouquet and one that I keep returning to my nose to enjoy!

On the palate I get lovely flavors of sweet red raspberry fruit and hints of candied strawberry. It's quite obvious that this wine has a substantial amount of residual sugar, and to be honest it almost reminds me of drinking a Brachetto d'acqui, but with a bit more acidity.

Look..., stylistically this wine is a bit different then most rosé that is on the market today. It is much sweeter than most California blush wines that fall into the "fine wine" category. However, I don't think that this makes this wine any less inferior. In fact, I think this is the perfect pool-side summer wine, that I wouldn't mind polishing off all by myself! 87 points

I usually consume quite a bit more of them during the summer time, seeing that I'm located in the hot Arizona desert. However, I love this style of wine in the afternoon with light salads or soft cheeses. Riesling's from Washington's Columbia Valley often have a great crispness to them and can in many ways be compared to some of Germany's Kabinett-style wines.

On the nose I get freshly sliced golden apple aromas that combine with peach, orange blossom, and slight hints of mineral and petrol.

On the palate the wine has a very round and luscious texture, and flavors of orange marmalade, apricot, and citrus peel are the focus of the tasting profile. This is a very simple offering that has a touch of sweetness and finishes with medium to short length. A perfect light-lunch type wine that would go well with a salad and ham sandwich! 86 points
The Texas-born Parker first made his name during the dawn of the TV era playing Davy Crockett, serialized on the popular Disneyland show. Parker followed that in the 1960s with a successful run on TV's Daniel Boone.

By the late 1970s, Parker was focusing on real-estate investment in Santa Barbara and developed numerous projects over the years. In 1989 Fess and his family turned an interest in fine wine into an adventure now 20 years in the making.

The Fess Parker Winery is a highly regarded and popular destination on the Foxen Canyon wine trail in Los Olivos, CA. The family also farms over 300 acres of vineyard in the Santa Ynez valley. Creating a successful business with his family was one of Fess' proudest achievements.

Parker and his wife, Marcella, marked their 50th wedding anniversary in January of this year. He had remained active up until a year ago when his health began to fail. Tim Snider, who is married to Parker's daughter, Ashley, is president of the winery and has been overseeing day-to-day operations.

2005 Girard Artistry Napa Valley Red Wine

The 2005 Girard Artistry is a proprietary blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 14% Petit Verdot, 9% Malbec, and 1% Merlot. The fruit is primarily sourced from vineyards located in the Oakville and St. Helena appellations of Napa.

The first noticeable character of this wine is it's deep and dark color. Although it's five years old it maintains it's incredible dark ruby color.

On the nose I get intensely ripened black fruits such as black raspberry, black cherry, and black plum. There is also secondary notes of mocha, graphite, licorice, and oak. The nose is very typical of the current Napa style which seems to be switching to a more ripe and more chocolate laden aroma profile.

On the palate the wine continues to demonstrate it's ripe black fruit flavors with beautiful cassis, black licorice, and almost prune-like characteristics. There is some very pure black cherry notes that also combine with subtle hints of toasted oak.

Where this wine thrives is in it's overall balance and harmony. It has a silky smooth texture, is very well made, and finishes with some very nice sour black cherry flavor and soft tannins. Those who enjoy a very balanced meritage-style wine, will love this stuff. 91 points
It's something I've wondered about for some time and totally agree with the writer about. It's the argument that all non-vintage Champagne's should disclose the disgorgement date on the bottle for the consumer.

To me this only makes sense that the consumer know exactly how old their NV Champagne really is. What if a person buys a bottle of Veuve or Moet at the Cost co. that has been sitting around for a few years??

Is an aged bottle of non-vintage cuvée going to taste consistent to the house-style if it is several years old?

Who really knows how long those wines have been warehoused and what conditions they have been stored in. To me it would only make sense for the producer to supply the disgorgement date on the bottle for quality control issues as a courtesy to the consumer.

Can you imagine if all perishable products didn't carry expiration dates on them?

Here is a list of Champagne producers who print the disgorgement date on the bottle for their NV wines. Courtesy of Bruce Sanderson of Wine Spectator:

Beginning May 27 and running until the 29 at the Scotiabank Convention Centre in Niagara Falls, Ontario, the Niagara Food & Wine Expo will unveil hundreds of finely crafted beverages to many eager enthusiasts poised to celebrate this magnificent grand opening.

This highly anticipated event will highlight wine, beer and spirits crafted locally and from around the globe. It offers an incredibly diverse selection, new experiences and first-rate educational opportunities for wine neophytes to the seasoned connoisseurs to everyone in between.

The renowned Toronto-Based Tutored Tastings program has emerged with four incredible educational classes led just outside the Expo in a classroom style setting. Learn to Taste like a Pro with experts from the LCBO, enjoy a Taste of Niagara led by four renowned winemakers, visit Vines Wine Camp to taste eight super summer sippers and go for the gold with a tasting of InterVin’ s top medallists hosted by the Head Judge himself.

“The great thing about the Niagara Food & Wine Expo is that we are bringing in high quality wineries from all over the world, along with a fantastic assortment of local restaurants and chefs, allowing attendees to pair world class wine with world class cuisine,” said Christopher Waters, Editor of VINES Magazine and Wine Consultant with the Niagara Food & Wine Expo.

Representing a few of the international wineries at the Expo will be California’s Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, Fetzer Vineyards and Little Black Dress Wines; Australia’s Henry’s Drive and Two Hands; Italy’s Giovello; Chile’s Viña San Pedro and Gato Negro; and Portugal’s Bacalhoa Wines, as well as many more.

“With summer just around the corner, the Expo is a great way to try out a variety of different wines and find the perfect choice for your next get together with friends or just to sip on the back patio,” said Waters. “At the Expo everyone will be able to try something that they’ve wanted to test out but haven’t had the chance.”

Of course not everything at the Niagara Food & Wine Expo will be from south of the border or overseas. Many Niagara wines will be presented at the Expo and guests will have the rare opportunity to meet the celebrities behind these locally crafted favorites including Derek Barnett, Winemaker at Lailey Vineyard, John Tummon, Winemaker at Kacaba Vineyards, Scott McGregor, Winemaker, Marcel Morgenstern, Sommelier with FRESH wines and many more.
It's produced by Niepoort which is a winery that specializes in both still and fortified wines. Click here to find out about the winery.

This particular wine is composed of several native Portuguese varietals called Rabigato, Codega, Donzelinho, Viosinho and Arinto. The wine was barrel fermented in 90% French oak for a total of 8 months, but does not undergo malolactic fermentation.

When I first took a whiff of this wine I immediately thought of a classic white Burgundy. It has a bouquet that is very reminiscent of clean, fruit-focused Chardonnay. However, as the wine starts to open up in the glass, more mineral and grassy notes start to appear, which turned my thoughts to Sauvignon Blanc and perhaps Spain's famed Albarino. Some descriptors of what I smelt were mineral, lemon curd, toast, citrus, and fresh wild flowers.

On the palate the wine boasts a round and slightly oily texture and shows flavors of mineral, lime peel, wet pavement, and very light hints of toast.

To be completely honest, I was expecting a lot more from this wine in terms of overall complexity. I think the Wine Advocate scored this wine like 93 points or something.....Anyways, all in all it's a well crafted wine but I can easily see many $10-15 dollar wines showing as well as this. 88 points

95 points

2007 Pezzi King Zinfandel

The 2007 Pezzi King Zinfandel from Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley is composed of 100% Zinfandel from the Pezzi King Estate Vineyard. It was aged in 20% New Oak, (60% French, 40% American).

This deep and purple colored wine shows aromas of brambly black raspberry, vanilla, smoke, hints of herb, chocolate, coconut, and perhaps just a touch of anise. Immediately what is very present on this wine is the oak characters and the obvious presence of American wood. I didn't even have to look at the tech data to know that this wine was aged at least partially in American oak barrels. It's that coconut and slightly herbal-dill component that is always so noticeable.

On the palate the wine has a tangy berry flavor that combines with notes of pomegranate, cranberry sauce, spice, and a huge wallop of oak. This wine is well oaked and on the finish it is extremely hot. The alcohol sits at 16.3% and it is very noticeable on the finish.

This wine is really just not my style and it's a bit disappointing because I'm used to a better quality wine from Dry Creek. Too much wood and too much alcohol make this wine very disjointed. 75 points
What's great is that although this wine is actually quite a large production at 17,425 cases, about 75% of the fruit is sourced from estate vineyards located in the Chehalem Mountains AVA. So, it's a wine that's relatively easy to find, but it's also high quality juice, that's made from a great producer.

The color of this wine is just starting to change from its normal brimming red color, to a lighter shade of red that is quite translucent all the way through to the core. The edges are turning to an almost rosé type color, which is quite normal and just indicates that the wine has been in bottle for 4 years.

On the nose I get some really pretty aromas of cherry, red raspberry, rhubarb, mineral, and subtle hints of baking spice. This is textbook cool weather pinot noir and has all the complexity and mineral character of a classic Burgundy, but is just kissed with enough fruit to make it regionally specific to the Willamette Valley.

On the palate this wine is soft and elegant and shows some tart cherry flavors that combine with hints of red raspberry, cranberry, and crushed stones. The wine doesn't have an enormous amount of luscious or round fruit, but it's a style that will appeal more to the "old world" wine enthusiast. It's a graceful and very penetrating style of wine that relies on it's purity and ethereal qualities. 90 points
