The workshop brings together a selected group of 25 makers, business starters, artists, designers, social entrepreneurs and technologists, to co-create and build innovative solutions for a challenge facing one of the participating business’s ideas, selected by the MakeMilano team.

Applicants are asked to tell them a bit about their work, organisation or project & then to tell them about a challenge they face in their work.

On February 1st, the MakeMilano team will choose just 25 of the most exciting applicants to take part in the free workshop, then the one most compelling challenge presented, for the group to work on at the workshop.

In the sessions participants will work with us and the Avanzi and Microsoft teams, learning creative problem-solving techniques, in a collaborative hands-on workshop, that not only shows how to use technologies to solve business challenges, but also how to better share expertise and expand your real face-to-face network.

We previously saw in this saga dedicated to co-making that groups of individuals, collectives and institutions organise their own activities, whether they are recreational, work related or educational, in places that are becoming quality hybrids of space and form. In what way can social welfare and businesses be supported in these new needs and how can they be reorganised to give new solutions?

Sharing, standard, network: The FabLabs add to making the dimensions of network, standardisation, research and are a step further with respect to makerspaces, because they add the dimension of standardisation to processes to the benefit of diffusion of the subjects of the network. The first FABrication Laboratory was born in 2003 at MIT thanks to the initiative of Neil Gershenfeld who imagined a place where it could be possible to virtually create anything.

FabLabs function in more programmed and observant manner with respect to makerspaces and place research and development at their centre. Not by chance, the FabLabs are often born within incubators, universities and research centres where they are directly focussed on public subjects. Actually there are many FabLabs throughout the entire world, and the goal is to construct a global network of intercommunicative spaces.

The principle at the base of a FabLab is the standard equipment of a set of tools and machines (base kit of electronics, lasercutter, vinyl cutter, fresh CNC, 3D printer etc) that allows an amateur maker to do more or less anything, taking the knowledge bases of engineering and design. With some general simplifications, we can say that the FabLabs have prerequisites of a space in the order of 100-200 square meters, appropriate tools to model and the types indicated in the list of machines of the FabLab portal: io, software and figures of facilitation to use the spaces although the MIT doesn’t interfere with local organisation. The FabLab Charter asks that the spaces are open to the public with accessible fees or for free for a part of the week, in general for teaching youth. Local non-profit associations often manage them but there are different possible business models.

Produced at zero km: The founding objective of the FabLab network is that to approach the third industrial revolution, that is the transformation from the production chain of products in p2p logic with a diffused capillary of small centres of production graded to create objects that would be acquired and sold as packets of data. Community workshop: Beyond the non-profit FabLab network and the franchising of the profitable Techshop – associates from the trademarked aspect – it is interesting to examine the cases of makerspaces that are bigger in dimension, so much they are defined as “community workshops”, one of many is the Artisan’s Asylum non-profit community craft studio founded in 2010 in Somerville, Massachusetts; 3800 square metres, 250 monthly users, 140 places, 45 pallets of store merchandise and 80 units of storage shelving for a fee.

According to the founder Gui Cavalcanti, this space was conceptualised as a 24/7 place to offer democracy to the manufacturing process of anything, also prototypes that come from drafts.

In that sense the concept of makerspace is associated with the possibility to allow more widespread numbers of artisan work, envisaging spaces dedicated to every type of work, with specific layout, infrastructure (high voltage electricity, ventilation and circulation), all of the support tools and updated machines.

Every area can be well used by hobbyists to experts, and different types of artisans are made welcome within the same space, which is one of the main attractions for the users.

The space is structured according to a traditional business model in the face of major investments and high management and structural maintenance costs. In a 2012 report after a visit to the Artisan’s Asylum, Francesca Mazzocchi speaks about “another form of collective intelligence”, with a strong inspiration from the local community, comprising the professional artisans of the place, according to a model of collaboration and development to keep in mind those Italian territories that are preparing to open a FabLab or makerspace.

If it’s true that the creation of a community around co-making spaces is fundamental, even more than the space and the brand, how do we imagine an Italian model of collaborative space for co-making?

Abbiamo visto precedentemente in questa saga dedicata al co-making che gruppi di individui, collettivi, e istituzioni organizzano le proprie attività sia ludiche che lavorative e formative, in luoghi sempre più ibridi nelle qualità spaziali e formali.
In che modo il welfare sociale e le aziende potrebbero agevolare questi nuovi bisogni e come dovrebbero riorganizzarsi per dare nuove risposte?

‘Stiamo entrando in un nuova fase del capitalismo legato al concetto di accesso. L’era dell’accesso è appunto questo cambiamento che prevede il passaggio da un’ economia dominata dal mercato e dai concetti di bene e proprietà, verso un’economia dominata da valori come la cultura, l’informazione e le relazioni.’ Era dell’accesso, Jeremy Rifkin 2000.

Sharing , standard, network : i FabLab aggiungono al making le dimensioni del network, della standardizzazione, della ricerca, sono un passo ulteriore rispetto ai makerspaces, perchè aggiungono la dimensione della standardizzazione dei processi a beneficio della diffusione dei contenuti nel network. Il primo FABrication LABratory nacque nel 2003 al MIT grazie all’intuizione di Neil Gershenfeld che volle immaginare un luogo dove fosse possibile creare virtualmente qualsiasi cosa.

I FabLab funzionano in maniera più programmatica e mirata rispetto ai makerspaces, ponendo la ricerca e lo sviluppo al centro. Non a caso, i FabLab nascono spesso dentro incubatori, università, centri di ricerca quando addirittura sono promossi dal soggetto pubblico. Attualmente ci sono numerosi FabLab sparsi in tutto il mondo, e l’aspirazione è quella di costruire un network globale di spazi intercomunicanti.

Il principio alla base di una Fablab è la dotazione standard di un set di strumenti e macchine (kit base di elettronica, lasercutter, vynil cutter, fresa CNC, 3D printer, etc) che permetta a un maker principiante di fare più o meno ogni cosa, apprese le conoscenze base di engineering e design. Con alcune semplificazioni di genere potremmo dire che i Fablab hanno requisiti di spazio nell’ordine dei 100-200 mq, strumenti adeguati per modello e tipo indicati nella lista machines del portale fablabs.io, software e figure di facilitazione per l’utilizzo degli spazi, sebbene il MIT non interferisca con le organizzazioni locali. Viene richiesto secondo il Fablab Charter che tali spazi siano aperti al pubblico a tariffe accessibili o gratuitamente per una porzione della settimana, in genere per la formazione dei ragazzi. Spesso sono gestiti da associazioni locali no-profit, ma sono diversi i modelli di business possibili.

Fabbriche a km Zero: Obiettivo fondativo del network Fablab è quello di avvicinare la terza rivoluzione industriale, cioè la trasformazione delle filiere dei prodotti in logiche p2p con una capillare diffusione di piccoli centri di fabbricazione in grado di creare oggetti che verrebbero acquistati e venduti quindi come pacchetti data. Laboratorio per la comunità (Community workshop): oltre il network no profit Fablab, e il franchising for profit Techshop, accomunati dall’aspetto trademarked, è interessante passare in esame casi di makerspace più grandi in dimensioni, tali da essere definiti ‘community workshop’, uno su tutti l’Artisan’s Asylum no-profit community craft studio fondato nel 2010, a Somerville, Massachusetts, 3800mq,

Secondo il founder Gui Cavalcanti, questo spazio è stato concepito come un luogo 24/7 per rendere democratico il processo di manufacturing di qualsiasi cosa, anche prototipale partendo da una bozza.

In tal senso il concetto di makerspace è associato alla possibilità di permettere il più esteso numero possibile di lavorazioni artigianali, prevedendo spazi dedicati per ogni lavorazione, con layout specifico, infrastrutture (elettricità ad alta tensione, ventilazione, aspirazione), tutti gli strumenti di supporto e le macchine adeguate.

Ogni area può essere utilizzata tanto da hobbisti quanto da esperti, e il fatto di ospitare nello stesso spazio diverse tipologie di artigiani nello stesso luogo è uno dei fattori di maggiore attrazione per gli utenti.

Lo spazio è strutturato secondo un modello di business tradizionale a fronte degli investimenti importanti e degli alti costi di gestione e mantenimento di struttura. In un report del 2012 dopo una visita presso l’Artisan’s Asylum, Francesca Mazzocchi parla di “un’altra forma di intelligenza collettiva”, con una forte ispirazione alla comunità locale, comprese le professionalità artigiane del posto, secondo un modello di collaborazione e sviluppo da tenere presente per quei territori italiani che si preparano ad ospitare un Fablab o un makerspace.

Se è vero che la creazione di una community attorno agli spazi di comaking è fondamentale, ancora più dello spazio e del suo brand, come ci immaginiamo un modello di spazio collaborativo di comaking italiano?

Where are makers born? What difference is there between the American world and that of Europe? Do we always find ourselves confronting the nerd geek stereotype or are they also “normal” people?

To pinpoint the origins of the “maker” movement we need to look at America circa 1970s and the DIY culture where small makers grew up soldering the first electronic circuits, and typically the most loved place was the garage. From the individual form to those more organised, in Europe the first hacklabs were born in the 90s, often as activities of anarchical squatters; a physical realisation of communities of hackers that were already consolidated online.

Beyond the appware: Contrary to what you might think, the garage workshop is not an exclusive subject of the Palo Alto of the 70s and of the electronic pioneers in garages. One part was born through the American start-uppers who are rediscovering the value of homemade manufacturing and the artisan approach. The rediscovered taste for personalisation on the part of clients is reflected in a new trend of the labour market: they are always younger with a degree in industrial design, fashion design, graphic design or art which they reinvent as artisans, matching manual creation with entrepreneurial spirit. And so like this in all of the USA, from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, new printing and stationery shops are popping up.

In principle the PC: The hackerspaces are born within a culture of open-hardware/software as spaces of shared knowledge. They have developed as places within which communities of programmers and enthusiasts can find and share experiences and exchange views on programming, data networks, free software, open-hardware and sometimes experiment with even more anarchical methods. In the hackerspaces there is a strong focus on the community and on the sharing of knowledge. The other common characteristic is the IT fit-out of the space that typically supplies high-speed connection, owner servers and storage. So they are spaces that are more or less concentrated on software and computers.

Open culture: The computer and all of the hardware present often come from donations, and so the physical location becomes a social centre also. The people who typically attend these workshops, beyond having a technical interest, are ideologically very motivated; the hacklabs are often diffused centres not only for technological knowledge, but also for ideas regarding free software, freedom of expression, the protection of privacy and in general digital rights and self-management.

Self-management: Many self-managed hacklabs are born because they usually have fewer computer resources and Floss allows them to equip themselves with tools of high level, even with fewer technical resources. Instead, some hacklabs are born within the university setting, created by the need of students and university researchers joined by a passion for Floss and freedom (digital and non-digital). By definition, self-management and sharing of resources made available from the hacklab are freely available to everyone. Often there are also “banks of digital organs” in which it is possible to exchange used parts of computers and electronic gadgets in general.

Metalab hackerspace – Vienna

Not branded: Around the definition of hackerspace, in equal step with the diffusion of such spaces, you start to use the terms “hacking” and “hacker” to define the work of physical objects, to soften the negative connotations of the term “hacking” according to mainstream media. Also in these spaces important businesses are born such as the well-recorded MakerBot Industries (NYC Resistor Hackspace) that has largely contributed to changing the world of 3D printing. By extension, the fact remains that at times, the hackerspace is often associated to collective projects and to social-political inspirations. At the heart of the ideologies, arriving from our days, from the typology of hackerspace derives the concept of autonomous spaces of networks in the world of making. Collectives of professional hardware and digital-ware, they organise to meet and develop ideas and projects, to build new shapes of entrepreneurship based on new technologies.

Unterwelt, collective lab – Roma

Unterwelt.it: An Italian example of hackerspace in the sense of not-branded ones, is the Roman workshop in Trastevere, Unterwelt.
“All of this occurs in Unterwelt, an office-workshop in the centre of Roma that is not only a meeting place, but also an incubator of ideas and projects. But Unterwelt is not only a space. Unterwelt is us and we give life to this space and to these projects. For us, Unterwelt is a world. It is that which is born when processes and technologies meet art and craftsmanship. It is the magical world that you find under the surface of things.” One of the founding members of Unterwelt is Alessandro Ranellucci, known for writing the open source software Slic3r to expand models and the control of 3D printers.

Recipient.cc: In Milan the group Recipient organises its work inspired by innovation and technology in an artisan-type concept space, with an organisational model specifically orientated to a culture that is free and open to the forays of guests and nomads. There is the possibility of desking, daily and monthly hosting with access to the maker’s lab, to the kitchen and to the social space of the building.

Wired people: The people who have chosen to work autonomously and connectedly have embraced the free culture inheriting the ideological and spacial “layout” of the first hackerspaces where the spaces are open, without division between the “work islands” and with real mental openness towards collaboration and other co-operation, often hosting at “home” moments of training and information. The concept of the workshop is real and defined because an organised workshop exists for the work and the informal learning moments.

Social hubs: To support the fact of how the co-making spaces can become large hubs of social construction is the example of the ciclofficine (cycle office), which is valid because it is a place where the environment is endowed with equipment to repair bicycles. They are interesting places because they are strongly characterized by their hardware, little silicone, are very big and present the opportunity to know new people, exchange advice and collaborate while working together on their bikes. There are many cases where associations or organisations manage the spaces, which allow anyone to repair their own bicycle in exchange for a fee or donation. Taking yourself to a ciclofficine has easily become a place where you can meet other enthusiasts.

Genspace, biohackerspace – New York

Scientific hubs: Another interesting phenomena is that of pirate scientific research, known as DIY biology or biohacking. It is a growing movement, and collects people, communities, small organisations, biology and life science studies that use the same methods as institutional scientific research. The organisations and individuals who are coordinated in autonomous labs or in garages are not rare, and generally they have academic or business experience behind them and they assist by providing quality mentoring to other non-profit organisations to sustain open innovation in the field of scientific research, or diversely for profit to launch a start-up of bio-science.

To judge the examples illustrated it seems evident that freelance, associations and individuals in general prefer to organise work and their activities in spaces that are very distant from classic offices and workshops. Should businesses reconsider the places of work to stimulate their workers and favour the possibility to host nomad workers and their projects? Is it a discussion that is valid only for big city businesses (office headquarters, big companies) or also for the smaller realities that want to facilitate the process of open innovation?

Dove nascono i makers? Che differenze ci sono tra il mondo USA e quello EU? Ci troviamo di fronte sempre a smanettoni (nerd geek) o sono anche persone ‘normali’?

Per individuare le origini del movimento makers bisogna guardare all’America degli anni ’70 e  alla cultura DIY dove piccoli makers crescono saldando i primi circuiti elettronici stampati, e tipicamente il posto prediletto è il garage. Dalle forme individuali a quelle organizzate, in Europa all’inizio degli anni ’90 nascono i primi hacklab, spesso ad opera di squatter anarchici, concretizzazione fisica di community di hacker già consolidate online.

Non solo digital (Beyond the appware): al contrario di quanto si possa pensare il laboratorio in garage non è un argomento esclusivo della Palo Alto degli anni ’70 e dei pionieri dell’elettronica in garage. Una quota crescente degli startupper americani sta riscoprendo il valore del manufacturing fatto in casa con approccio artigianale Il ritrovato gusto per la personalizzazione da parte dei clienti si riflette infatti in un nuovo trend del mercato del lavoro: sono sempre di più i giovani con una laurea in disegno industriale, fashion design, graphic design e arte che si sono reinventati artigiani, associando la creazione manuale allo spirito imprenditoriale. Così in tutti gli Stati Uniti, da Brooklyn a Los Angeles, spuntano nuove botteghe di stampa e cartoleria.

In principio il pc: gli hackerspaces nascono dentro la cultura open-hardware/software come spazi di condivisione delle conoscenze. Si sviluppano come luoghi all’interno dei quali community di programmatori ed appassionati possono ritrovarsi per condividere esperienze e confrontarsi su programmazione, reti di dati, free software, open-hardware, talvolta sperimentati anche nelle versioni più anarchiche. Negli hackerspace c’è una forte attenzione alla comunità ed alla condivisione della conoscenza. L’altro tratto caratteristico è la dotazione IT degli spazi che tipicamente sono muniti di connessione ad alta velocità, server proprietari, storage. Sono quindi spazi centrati in maniera abbastanza precisa su software e computer.

Cultura open: i computer e tutto l’hardware presente sono spesso frutto di donazioni, così come la locazione fisica viene spesso messa a disposizione da un centro sociale. Le persone che tipicamente frequentano questi laboratori oltre ad avere un interesse tecnico sono ideologicamente molto orientate: gli hacklab sono spesso centri di diffusione non solo di conoscenze informatiche, ma anche delle idee di software libero, della libertà di espressione, della difesa della privacy ed in generale dei diritti digitali, dell’autogestione.

Autogestione: il fatto che gli Hacklab nascano all’interno di realtà autogestite avviene perché di solito queste hanno pochi mezzi informatici e il Floss consente loro di dotarsi di strumenti informatici di alto livello anche con poche risorse di calcolo. Alcuni hacklab sono invece nati in ambito universitario creati dalla volontà di studenti e ricercatori universitari accomunati dalla passione per il Floss e la libertà (digitale e non). In nome dell’autogestione e della condivisione le risorse messe a disposizione dagli hacklab sono liberamente accessibili a tutti. Spesso sono anche presenti “banche degli organi digitali”, in cui è possibile scambiare pezzi usati di computer e materiale elettronico in generale.

Spazi liberi (Not branded): Circa la definizione di hackerspace, di pari passo con la diffusione di tali spazi, si iniziò a fare uso dei termini ‘hacking’ e ‘hacker’ per definire il lavoro sugli oggetti fisici, per depurare le connotazioni negative del termine ‘hacking’ secondo i mainstream media. In questi spazi sono nati anche business importanti come quello ben noto della MakerBot Inustries (NYC Resistor Hackspace), che ha contribuito enormemente a cambiare il mondo del 3d printing. Per estensione resta il fatto che alle volte, gli hackerspace spesso sono associati alle tendenze collettiviste e alle ispirazioni socio politiche. Al netto delle ideologie, arrivando ai giorni nostri, dalla tipologia hackerspace derivano concept di spazi autonomi da network più estesi del mondo make. Collettivi di professionalità hardware e digitali si organizzano per incontrarsi e sviluppare idee e progetti, e costruire nuove forme di imprenditorialità basate sulle nuove tecnologie.

Unterwelt.it – Un esempio italiano di hackerspace nel senso di not-branded one, è il laboratorio Romano a Trastevere di Unterwelt. “Tutto questo avviene nell’Unterwelt, un’officina-laboratorio nel centro di Roma che è non solo luogo d’incontro, ma anche incubatore di idee e progetti. Ma Unterwelt non è solo uno spazio. Unterwelt siamo NOI che diamo vita a questo spazio e a questi progetti. Per NOI quello di Unterwelt è un mondo. È quello che nasce quando tecniche e tecnologie si uniscono ad arte e artigianato. È il mondo incantato che si trova sotto la superficie delle cose.”  Uno dei soci fondatori di Unterwelt è Alessandro Ranellucci, noto per aver scritto il software open source Slic3r per l’elaborazione dei modelli e il controllo delle stampanti 3D.

Recipient.cc A Milano il collettivo Recipient organizza il proprio lavoro ispirato all’innovazione e alla tecnologia in un concept space di tipo artigianale, con un modello organizzativo decisamente orientato alla cultura libera e aperto alle incursioni degli ospiti e dei nomadi. Possibilità di desking, hosting giornaliero e mensile, con accesso al maker’s lab, alla cucina e agli spazi sociali della struttura.

Gente in rete (Wired people): i ragazzi che hanno scelto di lavorare in forma autonoma e associata, hanno abbracciato la cultura libera ereditando il ‘layout’ ideologico e spaziale dei primi hackerspace dove gli spazi sono aperti, senza divisioni tra le ‘isole di lavoro’ e con grande apertura mentale verso le collaborazioni con altri collettivi, spesso ospitando a ‘casa’ momenti di formazione e informazione. Il concept del workshop è reale e determinato perchè esiste un laboratorio organizzato per il lavoro e per i momenti di didattica informale.

Hub sociali: a testimoniare il fatto di come il luoghi di co-making possano diventare grandi hub di costruzione sociale, vale l’esempio delle ciclofficine, spesso popolari, dove gli ambienti sono dotati di attrezzatura per il setting e la riparazione delle biciclette. Sono luoghi interessanti perchè hanno una forte caratterizzazione hardware, poco silicio e molto grasso e l’occasione di conoscere nuove persone mettendo le mani assieme sul proprio biciclo, scambiarsi consigli e collaborazione. Sono molti i casi di gestione da parte di associazioni o collettivi, che permettono a chiunque di riparare la propria bici in cambo di una fee o di un’offerta libera. Va da sè che le ciclofficine diventano facilmente luoghi di incontro per gli appassionati.

Hub scientifici: un altro fenomeno interessante è quello della ricerca scentifica pirata, nota come DIY biology o biohackig. È un movimento sempre più grande, e raccoglie individui, comunità, piccole organizzazioni, studi di biologia e life science che utilizzano gli stessi metodi della ricerca scientifica istituzionale. Non sono rari i collettivi e gli individui che si organizzano in laboratori autonomi o in garage, e generalmente hanno alle spalle esperienze accademiche o aziendali, e assistono in qualità di mentor altri ricercatori secondo modalità di training informale. Questo può avvenire in forma di hobby, come organizzazione no profit per sostenere l’open innovation nell’ambito della ricerca scientifica, o diversamente for protit, per lanciare un start-up di bio science.

A giudicare dagli esempi illustrati sembra evidente che freelance, collettivi e individui in genere preferiscono organizzare il lavoro e le proprie attività in spazi molto lontani dai classici uffici o laboratori. Le aziende dovrebbero riconsiderare i luoghi di lavoro per stimolare i propri dipendenti, e favorire la possibilità di ospitare le incursioni dei lavoratori nomadi? È un discorso che vale solo per le grandi aziende in città (headquarter office, big company), o anche per le piccole realtà che vogliano favorire processi di open innovation?

We have arrived at the fourth post of the co-making saga: how are things changing the schools and spaces being recreated to the benefit of young people who want to learn-by-doing?

Rochester Makerspace – New York

The master laboratory also comes from places of non-formal education, which experiment new ways of learning through games and experimentation. When these functions are displaced from the pedagogy to the community, it happens that new social hubs are prototyped where individuals meet, produce and work. These hubs take the name of makerspace, literally meaning places to do.

Gym of ideas: The makerspaces allow members of the community to design, prototype, create ideas and products that they perhaps couldn’t develop individually. The scope is that to facilitate access to knowledge and to machines, to satisfy the rights of individuals to shape their ideas without barriers and to encourage collaboration for the common good. As such places are spaces organised to sustain and organise dynamics of collective intelligence and of smart communities. The makerspaces represent the democratisation of the design, of engineering, of fabrication and of education.

Tech school: in the USA high schools from 2011 and 2012 a program was adopted to convert the libraries and old information technology classrooms into makerspaces, a sort of return to the “high tech” of old laboratories of professional training.

In February 2013 president Barak Obama gave a speech at the American congress State of the Union, speaking about a scholastic reform for a high tech future. For many years the budget for technical education have been cut, forcing the schools to delocalise worskshops in spaces separate to those of teaching. Instead today the political directive is that to reform the schools across making-oriented teaching, to design new professions and to actively involve the students in study.

These directions have been translated into the adoption of scholastic makerspaces in America, literally places to do things, the first in 2011 in Fayetteville, New York, initially Free Library Makerspace and then Fablab, equipped with a 3D printer and other digital fabrication technologies. The objective of the American school system is to fit out 1000 makerspaces by 2015.

In the Fablab of Fayetteville there is a space dedicated to the little makers, aged 5-8, to simulate the creativity of children and to address the principals of electronics through games. They are characterized as free play areas to imagine, create and build. The games fitted in the space facilitate the development of critical thinking, problem solving and of the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

Siamo arrivati al quarto post della co-making saga: come stanno cambiando le scuole e gli spazi ricreativi a beneficio dei più giovani che vogliano imparare facendo?

La matrice laboratoriale viene estesa anche ai luoghi dell’educazione non formale, che sperimentano nuove modalità di apprendimento attraverso il gioco e la sperimentazione. Quando queste funzioni vengono spostate dalla didattica alla comunità succede che si prototipano nuovi hub sociali, dove gli individui s’incontrano, imparano producono e lavorano. Questi hub prendono il nome di makerspace, letteralmente luoghi del fare.

Palestre di idee: i makerspaces consentono ai membri della comunità di progettare, prototipare e fabbricare idee e prodotti che non riuscirebbero a sviluppare individualmente. Lo scopo è quello di fornire l’accesso alle conoscenze e alle macchine, per soddisfare il diritto degli individui di dare forma alle proprie idee senza barriere all’accesso, e di incoraggiare la collaborazione per il bene comune. Tali luoghi sono degli spazi organizzati per sostenere e organizzare dinamiche di intelligenza collettiva e di smart communities. I makerspaces rappresentano la democratizzazione del design, dell’ingegneria, della fabbricazione e dell’istruzione.

Scuole tecnologiche (Tech school) nelle High School statunitensi tra il 2011 e il 2012 viene adottato un programma per convertire le biblioteche e le vecchie aule di informatica in makerspace, una sorta di ritorno high tech dei vecchi laboratori di formazione professionale.

Nel febbraio 2013 il presidente Barack Obama pronuncia il discorso State of the Union al congresso americano parlando di una riforma scolastica per un futuro high tech. Per molti anni i budget per l’educazione tecnica sono stati tagliati, costringendo le scuole a delocalizzare i laboratori in spazi separati dall’insegnamento. Oggi invece l’indirizzo politico è quella di riformare le scuole attraverso insegnamenti making oriented, per disegnare nuove professioni e per coinvolgere attivamente gli studenti nello studio.

Questi indirizzi si traducono con l’adozione in America di makerspace scolastici, letteralmente luoghi per fare le cose, il primo nel 2011 a Fayetteville, New York, dapprima Free Library Makerspace, poi Fablab, con la dotazione di una stampante 3D e altre tecnologie di fabbricazione digitale. L’obiettivo del sistema scolastico americano è di allestire 1000 makerspace entro il 2015.

Nella Fablab di Fayetteville c’è uno spazio dedicato ai little makers, età 5-8 anni, per stimolare la creatività dei bambini e indirizzarli ai principi dell’elettronica attraverso il gioco. Si caratterizza per essere una free play area per immaginare, creare e costruire. I giochi in dotazione nello spazio facilitano lo sviluppo del pensiero citico, del problem solving, e delle discipline STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

Do you remember where we were? In the last post we talked about “third places of the city” and models inspired by the nature of the place (ancient topic space) that are represented in other forms today. In this post we will take a detour through the places of development and through the experiences of learning-by-doing.

The industrialisation of places through motorisation, the technological parts of the industry and the spin-off services, demand an organisation of work in programmed sequences, and the circular production replaces the linear method of operation that is coordinated by a manager, typically an engineer, who acts for the pater familias or master of the shop. This radical change of economy involves both the use and preparation of workers, who no longer learn in the workshop but specialise within professional institutes and trade schools.

Workshops in the city (corner master): The shape of the workshop survives for the professions that offer services (barbershops, laundries, dressmakers), restoration, goods merchants and artistic artisans. In some cases more functions live together within a single workshop, especially in the small residential centres. Unlike workplaces that are delocalised on the edge of the city in the form of house and workshop, or in the industrial zones, where they often join without urban planning for the artisan workshops.

Maker school: The vanishing workshops disband the opportunities of artisan internships, but add to the economic growth of the professional institutes to technically prepare people who work in factories, in workshops of third parties, or for themselves. Craft training: Equally also for the technical training of the personnel of manufacturing businesses through the learning of manual and artisan skills, are the workshops fit-out with stand alone workstations without productive objectives, but with the purpose of training under the supervision of a tutor. These needs, if at one time were routine for businesses or the training process required to make the factory operational, today are a way to help the employment of disadvantaged people who change profession for passion or necessity.

Ricordate dove eravamo rimasti? Parlavamo nel post precedente dei “terzi luoghi della città”, e modelli ispirati dalla natura del luogo (ancient topic space) che oggi si ripresentano sotto altre vesti. In questo post invece facciamo una digressione sui luoghi della formazione, e sulle esperienze di apprendimento attraverso il fare.

L’ industrializzazione del paese attraverso la motorizzazione e i distretti tecnologici dell’industria e degli indotti a servizio, richiede un organizzazione del lavoro in sequenze programmate, e alla produzione in cerchio si sostituisce quella in linea con operazioni seriali coordinate da un direttore, tipicamente un ingegnere, che fa le veci del pater familias o del maestro di bottega. Questo radicale cambiamento dell’economia coinvolge sia i consumi che la preparazione dei lavoratori, che non fanno più apprendistato a bottega ma si specializzano negli istituti professionali e nelle scuole di mestieri.

Botteghe in città (Corner master): La forma della bottega sopravvive per quelle professioni che offrono servizi (sale da barba, lavanderie, sartorie), riparazioni, beni commerciali e artigianato artistico. In alcuni casi convivono più funzioni all’interno di una singola bottega, specialmente nei piccoli centri abitati. Diversamente i luoghi di lavoro vengono delocalizzati ai margini della città in espansione, nelle periferie nella forma di casa e bottega, o nei tessuti industriali, dove si aggregano spesso senza pianificazione urbanistica i laboratori artigianali.

Involuzione industriale (Industrial involution): Intendo per convivialità il contrario della produttività industriale. Ognuno di noi si definisce nel rapporto con gli altri e con l’ambiente e per la struttura di fondo degli strumenti che utilizza […] Il rapporto industriale è riflesso condizionato, risposta stereotipata dell’individuo ai messaggi emessi da un altro utente, che egli non conoscerà mai, o da un ambiente artificiale, che mai comprenderà. Scuole di maker (Maker school): scomparendo le botteghe vengono a mancare le occasioni di apprendistato artigianale, e complice la crescita economica sono gli istituti professionali a preparare tecnicamente i ragazzi che lavoreranno presso industrie, laboratori di terzi, o in proprio. In tali scuole vengono allestiti laboratori con macchine e postazioni da lavoro, dove l’insegnamento ha una forte caratterizzazione pratica. Makers ante litteram.

Esercitazioni artigianali (Craft training): ugualmente anche per la formazione tecnica del personale d’azienda manifatturiera attraverso l’apprendimento di skill manuali e artigianali, vengono allestiti laboratori con workstation stand alone senza obiettivi produttivi, ma con finalità di training sotto la supervisione di un tutor. Questi bisogni se una volta erano prassi aziendale o l’iter formativo obbligato per potersi collocare in fabbrica come operaio, oggi sono un modo per aiutare l’inserimento lavorativo dei soggetti svantaggiati o di quanti si rimettono in gioco cambiando professione per passione o necessità.

Le nostre scuole si stanno allineando a questa nuova voglia di fare? Possiamo dare ai più piccoli e ai ragazzi occasioni di giocare stimolando la creatività al netto di console e monitor?

In the preceding post of the co-making saga, we launched a question: how have places of “doing together” changed from yesterday to today? Here we try to track a pathway of social making via small steps.

The organisation of “doing” places respond to a primary need of Homo Faber, that is the man as creator; the capacity to create, build, transform the environment and the reality in which he lives, adapting to his needs. The peasant and rural lives build the first examples of social organisation of work, which dictate collaboration among all of the family, including women and children, where the only principle was of productivity and the division of housework, but above all the division of tiring and slow burdening activities. The work that they do at the bench or on the spot is brought into the yard, or street, where the work is alternated and lightened by a feeling of sharing and celebration. For the economy of the primary sector of places that are principally rural, they associate the activity of transformation and sale of commercial goods and artisan products to the city, in the form of small stores, which are ordained as the goods sales point where sometimes they produce the same objects as those that are being sold.

Workshop and street work: The workshop was born as a tavern in ancient Rome, and was initially characterised as a commercial outpost of freedom and a wine bar for cask wine. The Latin roots of the workshop is apotheca; derived from the Sicilian putia, or putio du vinu sfusu, where you go to buy and consume cask wine in company. The workshop of medieval times then became a place representative of the mechanics for the production of artisan works. The workshop didn’t serve only as a storage of wares to sell but it was simultaneously the workshop, when this wasn’t occupied by a retro-workshop or some mezzanine or platform where the shop-boys and students generally stayed because often the master gave board and accommodation to the workers in hope that they can open their own workshop one day. Although the work was divided it didn’t follow scientific criteria, thinking only to the best type and furniture characters, or to the lute workshop, the main workers of the workshop followed pieces of work in an organised and productive system.

Endeavours of family: After the 500s, the workshop of the artists vanished, substituted by academia and the studio. In times closer to us, shops generally substitute the voice of workshops, which is always becoming more decayed. In its meaning of productivity the workshop still survives today in the form of the artisans laboratory / workshop, often family managed, sometimes overlapping as a place to live. The masters of these workshops are in custody of cooperative knowledge and they pass on the crafts to their children, who in many cases build small impacts in the universe and in the Italian map of productivity.

A place in a factory: with the change of the economic world, society and cities are reorganising themselves at the industrial extremes to produce, to give work and to use well new economies that are now indispensable. The factories, above all in provincial areas, became places of liberation of individuals who were able to establish through the work, outside of the familial context a model price of production that almost never takes into account the inter-human dynamics but only the numbers and profits.

Manual knowledge: The social aspect and involvement of individuals indicate the difference between an industrial space and that of artisans and small family businesses. The hyper-local economic hyper-scale is compatible with a diffused economic model and is best distributed and the rediscovery of hands and workbenches constitute some of the motives to renew interest in artisan activities within a post-digital society. Besides the artisan dimension, the need to put life’s passions and interests at the centre gives rise to the small questions of knowledge and manual skills, to give shape to their desires, also rediscovering traditional crafts and simple activities that people no longer want to buy, but to do themselves in a more independent and aware way, sometimes in the form of entrepreneurship. To know how to do something creates knowledge, and knowledge helps us to choose and recognise the value of spaces, products and services.

Post-digital society and third places: Daily gestures, customs and the way of interacting with a space and with people show deeply the needs of the space and of the objects that we use for living. The new society is made of people who move quickly, live in smaller houses (sometimes sharing) and more commonly based on location. We change house, also within the same city, with great ease, and in general we have a great desire to live better with less, and consequently they adapt better to transformable spaces, personal and customised objects, produced in self-made houses.

In the publication The Great Good Place, Ray Oldenburg speaks of Third Places, halfway between the house and work. The Third Places are described as anchors of community life that favour and facilitate the human interactions and creativity. Oldenburg suggests the following characteristics to identify a Third Space: free or not expensive, food and drink – also if it’s not indispensible, they are important; easily reachable, in close proximity to many things, also on foot; to involve the regular frequenters – those who often meet there, and to be welcoming and comfortable.

Are our cities are adequately structured in shape, tools and mediation spaces between the activities and the individual? Does parity exist in the area of Third Spaces and what are the places for children and youth? Can we create an economy in the middle of the city, or must we resign ourselves to parking for the elderly? In what way can the elderly create value for themselves in the city that works?

Nel post precedente della co-making saga, abbiamo lanciato un interrogativo: come sono cambiati i luoghi del fare insieme tra ieri e oggi? Quindi qui proviamo a tracciare un percorso del making sociale per piccoli passi.

L’organizzazione dei luoghi del fare, risponde a un bisogno primario dell’Homo Faber, ossia l’uomo come artefice, capace di creare, costruire, trasformare l’ambiente e la realtà in cui vive, adattandoli ai suoi bisogni. La civiltà contadina e la vita rurale costituiscono i primi esempi di organizzazione sociale del lavoro, dove a dettare la collaborazione di tutta la famiglia, comprese donne e bambini, non è solo principio della produttività e della divisione dei compiti, ma soprattutto la divisione dei carichi di attività faticose e lente. I lavori che si fanno alla seggiola o sul posto, vengono portati nella aia, o in strada, dove si alterna il lavoro al sollievo dei convivi e delle feste. Alle economie del settore primario dei luoghi principalmente rurali si associano le attività di trasformazione e vendita dei locali commerciali e artigianali della città, nella forma della bottega, ossia il locale destinato alla vendita delle merci, dove talvolta si producono gli stessi oggetti dei quali si esercita il traffico.

Bottega e lavoro di strada (workshop and street work): la bottega nasce come taberna nella Roma antica, e si caratterizza inizialmente come avamposto commerciale del liberto e come luogo di mescita di vino sfuso. La radice latina di bottega è apotheca, per derivazione in siciliano putìa, o putìa dû vinu sfusu dove ci si reca per acquistare o consumare in compagnia. Le botteghe dal medioevo in poi diventano i luoghi deputati alle arti meccaniche per la produzione di manufatti artigianali. La bottega non serviva soltanto come deposito di merce da vendere, era al tempo stesso laboratorio, quando questo non occupava un retrobottega o qualche ammezzato o palco, dove stavano generalmente i garzoni o discepoli, cui spesso il maestro dava anche vitto ed alloggio, e i lavoranti, in attesa di poter aprire bottega da loro. Seppure la divisione dei compiti non seguisse criteri scientifici, pensando alle prime tipografie a caratteri mobili, o alle liuterie, gli attori del lavoro di bottega eseguono pezzi di lavoro in un sistema organizzato e produttivo.

Imprese di famiglia: dopo il Cinquecento le botteghe degli artisti scompaiono, sostituite dall’accademia e dallo studio. In tempi a noi più vicini la voce bottega, andata sempre più decadendo, è generalmente sostituita dal negozio. Nella sua accezione produttiva la bottega sopravvive fino ai nostri giorni nella forma di laboratorio artigianale, spesso a conduzione famigliare, a volte sovrapposto al domicilio abitativo. I mastri di questi laboratori sono custodi di un sapere corporativo e trasmettono il mestiere ai loro figli, che in molti casi costruiscono piccole imprese nell’universo della mappa produttiva italiana.

Un posto in fabbrica: con il cambiamento del mondo economico, la società e le città si riorganizzano intorno ai poli industriali, per produrre, dare lavoro, e consumare beni economici nuovi e ora indispensabili. Le fabbriche soprattutto in provincia diventano i luoghi dell’emancipazione degli individui che possono determinarsi attraverso il lavoro, fuori dal proprio contesto famigliare a prezzo di modelli di produzione che non tengono conto quasi mai delle dinamiche interumane, ma solo di numeri e profitto.

Consapevolezze manuali: l’aspetto sociale e il coinvolgimento degli individui segnano la differenza tra lo spazio industriale e quello artigianale della piccola impresa famigliare. La scala economica hyper local compatibile con un modello economico diffuso e meglio distribuito e la riscoperta delle mani e dei banchi da lavoro costituiscono alcuni dei motivi del rinnovato interesse per le attività artigianali nella società post-digitale. Oltre la dimensione artigianale il bisogno di mettere al centro della propria vita passioni e interessi, da luogo alla formazione di micro domande di conoscenze e sapere manuali, per dare forma ai propri desideri, riscoprendo anche mestieri della tradizioni o attività semplici che non si vogliono più acquistare, bensì fare da sé in modo autonomo e più consapevole, a volte in forma imprenditoriale. Saper fare le cose crea conoscenza, e la conoscenza ci aiuta scegliere e a riconoscere il valore di spazi, prodotti e servizi.

Società post-digitale e ‘terzi luoghi’ (third places): I gesti quotidiani, i costumi e le modalità di interazione con lo spazio e con le persone segnano profondamente i requisiti degli spazi e degli oggetti che ci usiamo e viviamo. La nuova società è fatta di gente che si sposta rapidamente, vive in case più piccole, a volte condivise, e sempre più spesso in locazione. Cambiamo casa, anche all’interno delle stesse città, con maggiori facilità, e in generale abbiamo un grande bisogno di vivere meglio con meno, per conseguenza si adattano meglio alle nostre esigenze spazi trasformabili, oggetti personali e personalizzabili, produzioni in casa self made.

Nella pubblicazione The Great Good Place, Ray Oldenburg parla di Third Places, mediani fra la casa e il lavoro. I ‘Luoghi Terzi’ vengono descritti come ancore della vita comunitaria, che favoriscono e facilitano le interazioni umane e la creatività. Oldenburg suggerisce le seguenti caratteristiche per individuare i terzi spazi: gratis o non cari; cibo e bevande, anche se non indispensabili, sono importanti; facilmente raggiungibile, in prossimità di molte cose, anche a piedi; per coinvolgere gli abituali frequentatori – coloro che abitualmente si riuniscono là; e per essere accogliente e confortevole.

Le nostre città sono adeguatamante strutturate con forme, strumenti e spazi di mediazione tra le attività e gli individui? Esiste parità di genere per i Terzi Luoghi e qual’è il posto per i bambini e i ragazzi? Si possono creare delle economie nella città di mezzo, o dobbiamo rassegnarci a parcheggi per anziani? In che modo gli anziani creano valore per sè stessi e per la città che lavora?

In a time when community is connected through shared values, knowledge, resources, digital and physical spaces, our cities are changing under the pressure of new organisational and social models everywhere in the world. This is especially true in the new advancements of crowds, crowdsource knowledge, projects of crowdfunding, co-working and the sharing economy. It confirms that the vision of Ivan Illic of a model of conviviality in society has become increasingly possible through the transformation created by the web, first on our habits, then on our spaces. We have lived in digital houses, populated domains and places built online for our social networks and today we are rediscovering the value of collaborative places that already form part of our koine’ culture, and that now adapt to new functions, including relationships and work in the digital era.

But do we look at ourselves in a world of radical change or perhaps we are rediscovering models that already exist?

From the community to the blog and back: 25 years ago the world entered into networks of sharing that negotiate a virtual space, another world. Today things are different so that the virtuality is much more and permeates the real, physical lives of the people, influencing the nature of spaces, private and public, and the way of relating between people.

Internet of people: In this sense it is as though the digital era has dismantled and reconstructed the details of relationships, and the people have learnt storytelling, to know themselves and share through the web, and now the same collaborative culture can be put into play in the physical places of work and in free time. After the crisis there are always fewer people who aspire to work in an office, at a terminal or in a factory production line. To use the words of David Gauntlett, author of The Society of Makers, today “to do is to connect”.

Circle activities: the convivial places and collaboration belong to the culture of our parents, of our grandparents and even further back, when the world was made without wires and it was enough for the only connections to be handshakes and arms were the motors of everything. In the reconstruction of the new collaborative vision where doing things together means reconnecting, these values return to the centre of our community.

Shared values: the sharing of production space as the new approach to social advancement rather than the necessity of economic organisation. Shares are growing in the sharing economy, open source, makers, fablabs, coworking, crowdfunding, alternative currencies and more. The term makerspace didn’t yet exist publically before 2005, the first year Make magazine was published. The term really became popular in 2011 when the magazine registered the domain makerspace.com and from there started to use the term to define public places that are accessible to design and create, often in relation to the creative context dedicated to young people.

Shared tools: the revolution of makers is marked by those who want to influence the real world by doing things, seizing objects with their hands and putting this drive into action both in knowledge and reality. This change obviously influences spaces and carries on the attitude of private places for do-it-yourself projects and the American culture of DIY patios, garages, cellars to spaces equipped to do, hacklabs, makerspaces, workshops, laboratories and fablabs. To understand what makers do, it’s enough to look at the images of Makerfaire where thousands of people meet to show their projects, creating small communities offline that are more structured and self-informed.

But what are the places to do together in the culture of past and present? And which forms are possible for makerspaces in the new image of the city that collaborates?

Nell’era delle comunità connesse da valori condivisi, conoscenze, risorse, spazi digitali e fisici, le nostre città stanno cambiando sotto la spinta di nuovi modelli organizzativi e sociali, ovunque nel mondo. Soprattutto il nuovo che avanza si afferma secondo logica crowd, conoscenze crowdsource, progetti in crowdfunding, co-working ed economie collaborative. Si può affermare che la visione di Ivan Illich di un modello conviviale di società sia diventata progressivamente possibile attraverso la trasformazione operata dal web, prima sulle nostre abitudini, poi sui nostri spazi. Abbiamo abitato case digitali, popolato domini e costruito piazze online per le nostre socialità di rete, e oggi riscopriamo il valore dei luoghi collaborativi che fanno già parte della nostra koinè culturale, e che oggi si adattano alle nuove funzioni, tra relazioni e lavoro nell’era post digitale.

Ma a guardarci dentro il mondo è cambiato radicalmente o stiamo forse riscoprendo modelli che già ci appartengono?

Dalla comunità al blog e ritorno: venticinque anni fa il mondo è entrato in rete con la convinzione che si trattasse di uno spazio virtuale, un altro mondo. Oggi le cose stanno diversamente, tanto che le virtualità sono più che mai fisiche e permeano regolarmente le vite reali delle persone, influenzando la natura degli spazi, privati e pubblici, e le modalità di relazione tra gli individui.

Reti di persone (Internet of people): in questo senso è come se l’era digitale abbia smontato e ricostruito una semantica delle relazioni, e le persone abbiano imparato a raccontarsi, conoscersi e condividere attraverso il web, ed ora la stessa cultura collaborativa si sposta nel campo dei luoghi fisici del lavoro e del tempo libero. Aldilà della crisi sono sempre meno quelli che aspirano di poter lavorare in un ufficio, a un terminale, o in una linea di produzione in fabbrica. Per dirla con le parole di David Gauntlett, autore de La società dei makers, oggi ‘fare è connettere’.

Lavorare in cerchio (Circle activities): i luoghi conviviali e collaborativi appartengono alla cultura dei nostri genitori, dei nostri nonni e ancora più indietro, quando il mondo era fatto senza fili e basta, quando le uniche connessioni erano le strette di mano, e le braccia il motore di tutto. Nella ricostruzione di una nuova visione collaborativa dove fare le cose insieme significa ri-connetterci, questi valori tornano al centro delle nostre comunità.

Valori condivisi (Sharing values): la condivisione degli spazi produttivi avanza come nuovo approccio sociale, piuttosto che necessità di organizzazione economica. Crescono le quote sociali di sharing economy, open source, makers, fablabs, coworking, crowdfunding, valute alternative e altro ancora. Il termine makerspace non esisteva ancora pubblicamente prima del 2005, primo anno di pubblicazione della rivista Make magazine. Tale termine divenne popolare a partire dal 2011, quando il magazine registrò il dominio makerspace.com e da allora inizia a usare il termine per designare posti pubblici e accessibili per progettare e creare, spesso in relazione a contesti creativi dedicati ai ragazzi.

Strumenti condivisi La rivoluzione dei makers porta il segno di chi vuole incidere sul mondo reale facendo le cose reimpossesandosi delle mani e degli oggetti, mettendo a sistema sia le conoscenze sia i mezzi. Questo cambiamento incide ovviamente sugli spazi perché procede dai luoghi privati del fai-da-te e della cultura statunitense del DIY, cortili, garage, cantine, agli spazi attrezzati per fare, hacklab, makerspace, laboratori, officine, fablab. Per capire cosa facciano i makers, basta guardare le immagini delle Makerfaire, dove migliaia di persone si riuniscono per mostrare i propri progetti, creando piccole comunità offline sempre più strutturate e consapevoli di sé.

Ma quali sono i luoghi del fare insieme nella cultura del nostro passato e presente? E quali forme sono possibili per i makerspace nella nuova immagine della città che collabora?

At the end of March we were invited to facilitate a workshop of Creativity and innovation. A co-creation of ideas and creative solutions, which was attended by the finalists of the Workshop of Ideas in Terra Jonica (Ionic Land), it is a project of the Province of Taranto that revolves around young people who want to create a business and students and residents who are curious to participate in this process.

We were asked to work through the possibilities to create a Hub of Ionic businesses in Taranto and we did this in our way.

First we organised the space in a circle and each person was asked to answer the questions:

• Who am I
• What do I do
• What is my project

After this we gave them five tables to spread among where all the participants sat.

Often there is talk about Hub communities, of business and of co-working. But to us of Uuushh, we notice more and more that these words are inflated and it is necessary to return to establish the simple but direct questions that start that which we have already confronted.

Above all, underlining the importance of the community and of its facilitation, more than the physical space, in these types of projects where collaboration is at the heart.

So we proposed three questions:

• What is a hub to you
• How must the place be physically
• What do you make available to achieve this or what do you think you can offer

The first question is to understand what “hub” means, the second to imagine the type of space and the third to create awareness about the resources, to give responsibility and to create a team of interested people.

At the end of the group work one representative per table shared what came out during the process and we made a map of all the materials.

The base to launch this type of project was created but now it’s obvious the necessary facilitation for all of these people (important resources) until they create a positive impact through the territory and put them into networks and begin to realise small steps toward the collective, big vision of growth.

A fine marzo siamo stati invitati a facilitare un Laboratorio di Creatività ed innovazione. Una co-creazione di idee e soluzioni creative, a cui hanno partecipato i finalisti di Officina di Idee in Terra Jonica, un progetto della Provincia di Taranto rivolto a gruppi di giovani che intendono dare vita ad una imprese e alcuni studenti e cittadini curiosi di partecipare a questo processo.

Ci è stato richiesto di lavorare sulla possibilità di creare a Taranto un Hub per le imprese joniche e noi l’abbiamo fatto a nostro modo.

Abbiamo organizzato lo spazio prima in circolo e ogni persona doveva rispondere alle domande:

• chi sono
• cosa faccio
• quale è il mio progetto

Successivamente abbiamo distribuito 5 tavoli in ordine sparpagliato attorno ai quali erano seduti tutti i partecipanti!

Spesso si parla di Hub comunitari, d’impresa o di co-working. Ma noi di UUUSHH ci rendiamo sempre più conto che queste parole sono inflazionate ed è necessario tornare a porre domande semplici ma dirette partendo da ciò che si ha già di fronte.

Soprattutto sottolineando l’importanza della community e della sua facilitazione, più dello spazio fisico, in questa tipologia di progetti dove la collaborazione sta alla base.

Quindi abbiamo posto 3 domande:

• cosa è per te un hub
• come deve essere fisicamente questo luogo
• tu cosa metti a disposizione per realizzarlo / cosa pensi di poter offrire

La prima domanda per ragionare su cosa si intende per “hub”, la seconda per immaginare la tipologia di spazio e la terza per creare consapevolezza sulle proprie risorse, dare responsabilità e per creare un team di interesse.

Al termine del lavoro in gruppo un rappresentante per tavolo ha raccontato ciò che è venuto fuori e si è fatta una mappatura di tutto il materiale.

La base per avviare questa tiplogia di progetto è stata creata ma ora risulta necessario facilitare tutte queste persone (importanti risorse) affinchè creino l’impatto positivo sul territorio, si mettano in rete e inizino a realizzare piccoli passi verso una grande visione collettiva di crescita.

What I’m about to tell you is something incredible that surprised us too! The process of #ufficiomanifesto, though it has been structured, we left very open. After the first two phases (which we spoke about here)

• to launch the call for ideas #ufficiomanifesto and create a scientific committee;
• the selection of nine projects from the call, the creation of Collaborative Talks and the selection of the best three projects;

in the days 19-20-21 of May we developed the third part by inviting the three designers / planners to a three day workshop to co-create together the collaborative office of Monforte srl. But we are not limited to design the space together, in fact the contrary. For this goal we haven’t focussed on anything specifically but we have put together many people, many projects, created relations, accelerated networking and seen that to co-create is exactly that which we love so much.

What have we learned?

• That the ideal collaborative office doesn’t exist but is designed among the people and their needs and roles.
• That to understand their necessities and their desires you must listen and ask the right questions.
• That everything passes through the network of relations between people within a space, and will be studied and looked at in the moments of exchange.
• That at the centre of the collaborative process are values, and it is those that create the identity of the project.

Within the process no-one was the protagonist but every person was at the heart of it and each contributed, collaborated and was put into play through active participation.

But who were these people?

1 The three groups of winners from the #ufficiomanifesto competition:

• Massimo and Valeria, architects of the studio Analogo;
• the students of Interior Design, Diego and Yael;
• the Spanish students of architecture, Marta and Carlota.

2 Andrea, Daniele, Viola, Luca, Paola, Lorenzo, Marco, Mirko, Tonia, Serena, Barbara of Monforte srl are those who responded to various questions and are the main office users. The entire third phase started with them, confronting and asking them many questions, some also personal, to understand the needs and desires they have.

What did we ask them and how did they respond?

• What does “collaboration” mean to you?
• How do you “collaborate” here at Monforte?

• Using the proper professional environment, collaboration works well because we achieve well-being even outside of work

• Sharing knowledge and ideas

Tonia:

• Exchanging ideas, opinions
• Talking, asking opinions and advice

Serena:

• Putting together common ideas and competencies
• Sharing and asking

Barbara:

• To exchange ideas and respect those of others
• Sharing that which I am doing

After this we discussed which roles are fulfilled within the business and how they approach the development of their work, in which ways and with what necessary techniques, technologies and spaces. With this listening exercise we were able to develop a “team” graphic linked to their relations more than to the physical space and start to achieve reasoning with the actual space of via Alessandria 5.

The three days of co-creation took place within the office that was a temporary work in progress, with an open kitchen and a long table at which we worked and designed and made graphics that took their form and life from our conversations. From one very technological part, streaming links allowed everyone to participate also virtually and three webcams throughout the room documented the collaboration, to the very manual and hand-made graphics through paper hung up on the pillars of the space to gather ever single reasoning or concept among the collaborative office.

3 In time we worked with and alongside those who pass through the business everyday but also with other people, professionals who are linked to the business and are imagining to pass their time here through co-working.

We asked many of them to explain their vision of a collaborative office:

• How should it be realised?
• With what characteristics?

To live this experience together shortened the distance and opened new doors of communication and empathy that was brought about by everyone’s stories, by experimenting with each person’s point of view, the needs linked to their way of working and the nature of the space, underlined the weaknesses that they have seen in the space but above all put their strengths in the spotlight (this part came about really easily).

From this conversation we designed a plan composed only of words that has highlighted elements to change and others to introduce into the layout in future.

Reasoning with the flow of the people, two types of different needs emerged:

• the workers of Monforte srl;
• the external guests (co-working, clients and event invitees).

We worked a lot with the theme of acoustics, of sounds and noises, of open-space and the necessity for privacy and respect to the space we have designed and we designed a graphic with the various levels of noise generated.

In the end we combined all of the input together that we received from friends / guests to create a proposed layout of inspiration and a graphic in which we covered the practical solutions that are simple and functional for the use of the space.

Because the results were unexpected we realised that the ideal collaborative office doesn’t exist but is designed among the people and their needs and in these three days of co-creation the team of Monforte srl were able to, guided by us and the guests, confront, respond to questions and highlight their needs. We have condensed it all into a practical layout to develop in a few precise actions, arriving so close to the people that they identified theirselves as part of the project.

Quello che vi sto per raccontare è qualcosa di incredibile che ha sorpreso anche noi! Il processo di #ufficiomanifesto, pur essendo stato strutturato, l’abbiamo lasciato molto aperto.

Dopo le prime due fasi (ne abbiamo parlato qui)

• lancio della call for ideas #UfficioManifesto e creazione di un comitato scientifico;
• selezione di nove progetti dalla call, creazione dei Collaborative Talks e selezione dei tre migliori progetti;

nei giorni 19-20-21 maggio abbiamo sviluppato la terza parte invitando i tre progettisti / designer a tre giorni di workshop per co-creare insieme l’ ufficio collaborativo di Monforte srl.

Ma non ci siamo limitati a progettare insieme lo spazio, anzi a dirla tutta, questo obiettivo non l’abbiamo per nulla centrato, bensì abbiamo messo insieme molte persone, molti progetti, creato relazioni, accellerato networking e capito che co-creare è proprio questo e ci è piaciuto molto.

Cosa abbiamo imparato?

• che l’ufficio collaborativo ideale non esiste ma è disegnato attorno alle persone e ai loro bisogni e ruoli
• che per capire le loro necessità e i loro desideri bisogna ascoltare e fare le giuste domande
• che tutto passa per le reti di relazione tra le persone all’interno di uno spazio, quindi vanno studiati anche gli sguardi e i momenti di scambio
• che al centro del processo collaborativo stanno i valori, i quali creano l’dentità del progetto.

All’interno del processo nessuno è stato protagonista ma ogni persona è stata centrale, ha contribuito, ha collaborato, si è messa in gioco, ha partecipato attivamente.

Ma chi sono state queste persone?

L’intera terza fase è partita da loro, confrontandoci e facendo loro molte domande, alcune anche personali per capire che bisogni e desideri avessero.

Cosa abbiamo chiesto e cosa ci hanno risposto?

• Cosa vuol dire per te “collaborare”?
• Come fai “collaborazione” qui a Monforte?

• essere sempre disponibili

• trovare il meglio negli altri
• coinvolgendo tutti da subito sui progetti

• apparecchiare la tavola
• organizzando il pranzo insieme

Marco:

• avere fiducia e rispetto della professionalità degli altri e fare insieme
• uscendo dal proprio ambito professionale la collaborazione funziona bene perchè ci troviamo bene anche fuori dal lavoro

Mirko:

• confronto positivo e creativo
• condividendo conoscenze e idee

Tonia:

• scambiare idee, opinioni
• parlando, chiedendo opinioni e consigli

Serena:

• mettere in comune competenze, idee
• condividendo e chiedendo

Dopodichè ci siamo fatti raccontare quali ruoli ricoprissero all’interno dell’azienda, come venisse sviluppato il loro lavoro, in quale modalità e con quali necessità tecniche, tecnologiche e spaziali.

Con questo esercizio di ascolto abbiamo potuto sviluppare un grafico di “squadra” legato alla loro relazione più che allo spazio fisico e iniziare a ragionare sullo spazio attuale di via Alessandria 5.

I tre giorni di co-creazione sono avvenuti all’interno dell’ufficio che era in veste provvisoria e in progress, con una cucina aperta e un lungo tavolo, su cui abbiamo lavorato, disegnato, fatto grafici e attorno a cui hanno preso forma e vita le nostre conversazioni. Da una parte molta tecnologia, collegamenti streaming per permettere a tutti di partecipare anche virtualmente e tre webcam puntate sulla scena per registrare l’atto collaborativo, dall’altra molta manualità e grafica a mano su cartelloni appesi ai pilastri dello spazio per cogliere ogni singolo ragionamento o concetto attorno all’ ufficio collaborativo.

3 Abbiamo lavorato con e a fianco di chi in azienda poi ci passa quotidianamente il tempo ma anche con altre persone, professionisti che sono legate all’azienda e stanno immaginando di passare qui del tempo in modalità co-working.

A molti di loro abbiamo chiesto di raccontare la loro visione di ufficio collaborativo:

• con quali caratteristiche?

Vivere questa esperienza insieme ha accorciato le distanze e aperto nuovi canali di comunicazione e di empatia che hanno portato tutte le persone a raccontarsi, a esprimere ciascuno il proprio punto di vista, le esigenze legate alla loro modalità di lavoro e alla natura dello spazio, sottolineare i punti di debolezza che vedevano nello spazio ma soprattutto a mettere in luce i punti di forza (questa parte risulta sempre più facile).

Da queste conversazione abbiamo disegnato una pianta composta solo di parole che ha messo in luce elementi da modificare e altri da introdurre nel layout futuro.

Ragionando con i flussi delle persone, sono emerse due tipologie con esigenze diverse:

• i dipendenti di Monforte srl
• gli ospiti esterni (co-working, clienti, invitati a eventi).

Abbiamo lavorato molto con il tema dell’acustica, del suono e del rumore, dell’ open-space e della necessità di privacy e rispetto allo spazio abbiamo disegnato un grafico con i vari livelli di rumore generato.

Infine abbiamo messo insieme tutti gli input ricevuti dagli amici / ospiti per creare una proposta di layout d’ispirazione e un grafico in cui abbiamo inserito delle soluzioni pratiche, semplici e funzionali all’utilizzo dello spazio.

Perchè come risultato finale inatteso abbiamo capito che l’ ufficio collaborativo ideale non esiste ma è disegnato attorno alle persone e ai loro bisogni e il team di Monforte srl in questi tre giorni di co-creazione è riuscito, guidato da noi e dagli ospiti, a confrontarsi, a rispondere a domande, a mettere in luce le loro esigenze e noi abbiamo condensato il tutto in un layout pratico da sviluppare in poche azioni precise, arrivando vicino alle persone a tal punto che ognuna di loro si è riconosciuta nel progetto.

It seems to be an oxymoron but it is the new thing.

In February Monforte srl asked us to facilitate the process of co-creation in their new headquarters and we immediately accepted because we wanted to get involved with them.
Monforte srl is a digital communication agency in Milan and when they decided to change location they also wanted to begin researching and developing a new way of living within the space and the manner of working. The change of base was the result of a sum of factors from

• new needs (a more spacious location)
• business marketing (a participatory process)
• research and development (a collaborative office).

Thus, having a clear objective, namely to design a collaborative environment for Monforte srl, together we imagined the method in which to realise it: co-creation.

We developed three stages, two of which are already finished.

1.
In February we launched the call for ideas #UfficioManifesto to collect ideas and designs related to the ideal office. Designers and architects (around 40) sent ideas, designs (also not unpublished) that supported the concept of the “collaborative office”.
At the same time we created a mixed scientific committee: Fabio Fornasari (architect), Valentina Auricchio (co-director of Ottagono), Daniele Lago (art director Lago spa), Ivana Pais (sociologist), Angela Violino (Impact Hub Milano), Angela Ponzini (designer) together with Andrea Frigo (CEO of Monforte srl) and Cristina Rebolo and myself (co-founders of Uuushh*).

We chose the nine projects that were most focused on the subject and we invited them to participate in three presentation evenings (during the Fuori Salone) and we called them Collaborative Talks. Each evening we discovered three projects, or rather three designers because we left them room to present their work entirely. There was also a big discussion of various themes related to collaborative offices with all of the participants (designers, businesses, the scientific committee and the public). We finally selected the 3 best ones:

• Stephanie Akkaoui Hughes, Akka architects
• Massimo Peota, Valeria Zamboni, Analogo
• Marta Mares and Carlota, Moving Indoors.

And now we have invited them to participate to the 3rd stage, in a three-day workshop, from March 19-21, to co-create together the collaborative office of Monforte srl.

The team of designers will create design to address and work with the “community” of the business.

Un ufficio privato collaborativo?

Sembra un ossimoro ma è il nuovo presente.

Monforte srl a febbraio ci ha chiesto di facilitare il processo di co-creazione della loro nuova sede e abbiamo subito accettato perchè avevamo voglia di metterci in gioco con loro.
Monforte srl è un’ agenzia di comunicazione digitale di Milano e quando ha deciso di cambiare sede ha voluto allo stesso tempo cominciare a ricercare e sviluppare un nuovo modo di vivere lo spazio e le modalità di lavoro. Un cambiamento di sede come risultato di una somma tra

• nuovo bisogno (sede operativa più spaziosa)
• marketing aziendale (processo partecipato)
• ricerca e sviluppo (ufficio collaborativo).

Così, avendo chiaro l’obiettivo, cioè progettare l’ambiente collaborativo per Monforte srl, insieme abbiamo immaginato il metodo con cui farlo: la co-creazione.
E l’abbiamo sviluppata in tre tappe, due delle quali già sono state sviluppate.

Allo stesso tempo abbiamo creato un comitato scientifico dal profilo eterogeneo: Fabio Fornasari (architetto), Valentina Auricchio (codirettore di Ottagono), Daniele Lago (art director Lago spa), Ivana Pais (sociologa), Angela Violino (Impact Hub Milano), Angela Ponzini (designer), oltre a Andrea Frigo (CEO di Monforte srl) e a me e Cristina Rebolo (co-founder di UUUSHH).

Abbiamo selezionato i nove progetti che centravano di più l’argomento e li abbiamo invitati a partecipare a tre serate di presentazione (durante il Fuori Salone) che abbiamo chiamato Collaborative Talks. Ogni sera tre progetti, anzi tre progettisti perchè abbiamo lasciato loro spazio per presentare l’intero loro lavoro. E una grande discussione sui vari temi dell’ufficio collaborativo con tutti i partecipanti (progettisti, azienda, comitato scientifico e pubblico).
Abbiamo infine selezionato i tre migliori:

• Stephanie Akkaoui Hughes, Akka architects
• Massimo Peota, Valeria Zamboni, Analogo
• Marta Mares e Carlota, Moving Indoors.

E ora li abbiamo invitati alla terza tappa, una tre giorni di workshop, il 19-20-21 maggio, per co-creare insieme l’ ufficio collaborativo di Monforte srl.

Il team di progettisti svilupperà il lavoro confrontandosi e lavorando con la “community” dell’azienda.
