Mock trial tournament

Everyone is invited to watch 23 teams compete at the Upper Midwest Durst Memorial Mock Trial Regional Tournament from Friday evening to Sunday, Feb. 10-12, at UW-Superior.

Watch the new Mock Trial video

Rounds will be held Friday evening through Sunday morning in Swenson Hall and the Yellowjacket Union. Postings of individual rounds will be made in YU. The UW-Superior team coding is 1303 and 1304.

Friday's round begins at 6:30 p.m.
Saturday's rounds begin at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Sunday's round begins at 9:30.

A round of competition lasts approximately three hours. Please remember:

Observers must arrive in the competition room at last 15 minutes before the round begins.
No talking is allowed during a round of competition and no communication can occur with the competitors.
Spectators may enter or depart a round when there is a brief pause in the competition, but not while competitors are actively competing.

Teams from the Upper Midwest will compete in four rounds to earn a spot to national competition in Waukegan, Ill., in early March. UW-Superior will have two teams competing.

Mock trial is an academic, forensic, competitive activity that teaches students who to analyze, present and defend a case to the trial court. UW-Superior is a member of the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) with over 650 other university teams from around the nation. Students portray attorneys and witnesses to create a legal case.

More than 30 legal professionals -- lawyers, judges, paralegals, professionals -- will judge these rounds of competition, representing one of the largest community-campus partnerships of UW-Superior. This year's case is a criminal case focusing on murder and DUI charges stemming from a tragic auto accident involving three young people after a night of drinking and driving.

The Global Perspectives Series presents "Weaving with Paint: An International Collaboration of Women to Create a Mural in Southern Mexico," by Dr. Kathleen Hubbard, Department of Visual Arts, at noon Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Yellowjacket Union 203.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

The Global Studies Advisory Committee proudly sponsors a new lecture series titled "GPS: Global Perspectives Series" to help students and campus community to discover diverse approaches to global studies at UW-Superior. Each month, the Global Studies program will partner with a department or program to put on a presentation.

Mock trial team places in national tournament

One of UW-Superior's mock trial teams placed in the Honorable Mention category at last weekend's National Mock Trial Invitational Tournament at Loras College, earning a spot among the top 13 teams in the 68-team competition.

UW-Superior's Black Team earned five wins, two losses and a tie, defeating teams from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Drake University, and splitting a ballot with Carthage College. The Black Team lost two ballots to Macalester College, the fifth-place team at the tournament.

Individual honors

UW-Superior's Jeff Anderson continued his perfectOutstanding Witness Award record for this academic year, earning 18 of 20 points on both sides of the case. Only 18 Outstanding Witness awards were given out among the 450 people competing. Mark Wick narrowly missed receiving an Outstanding Attorney award.

Regional tournament next

UW-Superior's mock trial team competes next at the regional tournament to be held Feb. 10-12 at UW-Superior. The tournament will determine which eight teams qualify for national competition in March. A team must place in the top eight positions to advance.

An academic forensic activity

Mock Trial is an academic forensic activity that teaches students how to analyze the law and facts of a case, and to argue and present cases in a trial court. Many of the participating students are majoring in UW-Superior's Legal Studies or Criminal Justice programs. UW-Superior belongs to the American Mock Trial Association and is one of more than 350 universities in the country that take part in mock trial competition.

The mock trial tournament at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, is the largest pre-regional tournament in the nation in January. The UW-Superior team's placement in the tournament is a significant accomplishment because it was competing in a field that included the University of Minnesota, the University of Illinois, University of Kansas and the University of Iowa as well as University of Wisconsin schools from Madison, Milwaukee and Platteville.

Team members

Most of UW-Superior's team members earned Outstanding Attorney or Outstanding Witness individual nominations during at least one round of competition. This year's Mock Trial team includes: Jeff Anderson (captain), Rebecca Anderson, Taylor Tengwall, Mark Wick (captain), Alicia Kline, Jake LIndberg, Samantha Meyers, Yer Vang, Brandt Devich (captain), Cody Chaffee (captain), Libby Ledin (captain), Elliot Charette, James Kolehmainen, Kelsey German, Jordin Gegare (captain), Brian DeMar, and Colin Pasterski.

The team is coached by Dr. Maria Cuzzo, of UW-Superior's Legal Studies program; Tracy Schramm, of the Bateman and Schramm Law Firm; Mark Fruehauf, Douglas County district attorney; and Julie Johnson Benfield, Sixth Judicial District Court clerk.

The Mock Trial team is supported by SUFAC, the Department of Human Behavior, Justice and Diversity, Legal Studies, and the Provost's Office.

Making a fresh start for the new year, Japanese-style

Nearly a month after the fact, the University of Wisconsin-Superior rang in the new year Japanese style on Sunday afternoon at the Yellowjacket Student Union.

Miaki Habuka, an instructor of Japanese language and culture at UWS, said the annual campus event is an opportunity for students and community members to learn about her native country and what most residents there consider to be the biggest cultural holiday of the year.

Many Japanese people make extensive preparations for the new year, called oshogatsu.

"To have a great new year, you have to start fresh," Habuka said. "You need to finish things you meant to accomplish before the year ends, so you can get the new year off to a better start."

As the new year approaches, many Japanese families swing into high gear, cleaning their homes from top to bottom and working to polish off any unfinished chores. Hopes are running especially high this year, Habuka said, noting that 2012 has the auspicious distinction of having been designated a "Year of the Dragon" in the Japanese Zodiac.

"A lot of people are hoping this year will be a better one, especially with the Japanese economy suffering in the wake of the earthquakes and tsunami," she said.

Kaoru "Coco" Midorikawa, a UWS senior majoring in art therapy, said it is customary to send cards - called nengajo - to friends, relatives, co-workers and business associates.

Many people send well over 100 cards, and it's considered poor form if nengajo don't arrive by New Year's Day. "It's kind of like sending Christmas cards," she said.

But Habuka said the Japanese tradition generally is considered more obligatory.

"If you don't receive a card from an acquaintance, it's rude," she explained.

Midorikawa said grown-ups traditionally give children in their family pouch-like envelopes containing cash gifts, a Japanese New Year's custom known as otoshidama.

Younger children often receive the equivalent of about $30 and teenagers $100 or more for otoshidama, Habuka said. The gifts spur a lot of spending, Midorikawa said, adding that shopping has become an important part of the post-holiday tradition for many Japanese people.

Habuka compared Jan. 2 in Japan to Black Friday here in the United States.

Guests at UWS on Sunday learned how to fold the origami cranes many Japanese people use to decorate their homes for the new year. The paper birds are supposed to bring peace and happiness.

Visitors also were invited to partake in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony and play games associated with the Japanese new year.

A video was shown of the Peace Bell at Enger Park being tolled repeatedly, as is the Japanese custom at midnight on New Year's Eve. Each ring is meant to dismiss one the 108 worldly sins identified in the Buddhist faith, so that people can begin the new year with a clean slate.

Participants at Sunday's event also had an opportunity to learn how to make sushi rolls.

"It was more difficult than I thought it would be," said Elizabeth Nordell of Duluth. But she was inspired, nevertheless. Nordell said her daughter had even just suggested they pick up supplies to try it at home.

Students, staff ride free on DTA buses

Students, staff and faculty who present their current UW-Superior identification card when boarding a DTA bus can ride for free anywhere in Superior and Duluth at any time.

DTA buses make several stops along Catlin Avenue on the UW-Superior main campus and south campus. An electronic message board with bus information and arrival times is available inside the main entrance of the Yellowjacket Union.

DTA buses run throughout the Twin Ports of Superior and Duluth, serving malls, downtown areas and other universities and colleges.

New credit transfer agreement for Chippewa Valley Technical College graduates

Graduates of Chippewa Valley Technical College will find it easier than ever to transfer their associate degree credits to the University of Wisconsin-Superior following a new agreement between the university and the college.

Under the agreement, students earning the Liberal Arts - Associate of Science Degree at CVTC campuses in Eau Claire, River Falls and Menominee can transfer their academic credits to UW-Superior and meet all of the university's general education degree requirements. That means CVTC graduates can more easily transfer all their courses to UW-Superior and enter the university as juniors.

CVTC's program requires completion of part of the Associate of Science Degree through courses offered by a baccalaureate university. Students may complete the degree at CVTC by taking online courses from UW-Superior, providing flexibility with job or personal commitments.

"Working with CVTC, this agreement enables us to take another step in the University of Wisconsin System's Growth Agenda of producing more university graduates in Wisconsin," said Dr. Faith Hensrud, interim provost at UW-Superior.

The agreement takes effect for students enrolling at UW-Superior beginning in January 2012. CVTC students or graduates seeking more information can contact UW-Superior at 715-394-8230 or admissions@uwsuper.edu.
