The symposium will raise critical questions about collaborations within the field and between scholars, artists, and activists. This workshop aims to:

Encourage discussion regarding disability studies resources in the region

Provide opportunities for peer-review, mentoring, and networking

Create and enhance collaborative, interdisciplinary, cross-institutional relationships between faculty, students, and community members.

WHO SHOULD SUBMIT?

You should participate if you are an undergraduate or graduate student of a post-secondary institution, a recent graduate, or someone with work, volunteer, or activist experience related to disability studies. It focuses on the social, cultural, and political meanings of disability, including its intersections with other identity categories. Disability studies addresses the pervasive oppression
of people with disabilities and emphasizes the roles of disabled people in defining problems and evaluating solutions.

Eligible submissions include: research, advocacy, theoretical, or creative work. Completed projects, class projects, or works in progress are acceptable. Abstracts should be submitted in English. Deadline is Friday, April 24th.

The Department of Political Science is accepting applications for the Political Science Honors Program for the 2015-16 academic year. To be considered for admission to the program, students must meet the following requirements:
-major in Political Science
The Honors Program is a program of advanced study in political science for undergraduates who wish to pursue a more challenging course of study in their junior or senior year. The program provides students with a thorough understanding of the interdisciplinary bases of the study of politics. Students accepted into the program take Pol S 398 (Honors Seminar) in autumn 2015 and must complete two additional 400-level seminars chosen from a departmental list. The 400-level seminars may be taken at any time but must be completed by spring 2016. Students earn 5 credits for each seminar, a total of 15 credits, and the seminars may count toward major requirements. Additionally, students write an honors thesis (POL S 488-489) during winter and spring quarters. Thesis credits do not count toward the major, but they do count as W-courses.

Students completing this program will earn 'Honors in Political Science' at graduation. Students who are in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program, as well as in the Political Science Honors Program, will earn 'College Honors in Political Science' at graduation.
We will concentrate on reading and interpreting mostly shorter fictional texts in relation to the author, the reader, and the culture at large. We will read and discuss a number of genres, such as realistic fiction, science fiction, and comics/graphic fiction. Primary course goals include enhancing your critical expression and realizing, as Richard Wright notes above, that the critical reading of fiction can help in expanding life’s possibilities.

Requirements include keeping up with and discussing critically in class daily readings, researching biographical and cultural allusions in the fictions to deepen reading experience, writing a midterm and final exam—both will include objective identification sections as well as essay portions.

Overview.

For-profit companies and non-profit organizations use marketing and human resources to create and deliver products, services, and ideas. This course explores:

Business practices that are aligned with environmental stewardship and social responsibility standards;

The concepts and models of a market orientation;

How markets are researched and targeted, and products positioned, to meet consumer needs;

Creating and pricing products, developing distribution channels, and implementing promotion campaigns;

Managerial and leadership skills and styles;

How companies motivate employees and develop human capital; and

Methods for recruiting, selecting, training, and evaluating employees.

Sustainability refers to integrating environmental, social, and financial/economic elements in order to meet the needs of people today without compromising Earth’s capacity to provide for future generations. This course explores the meaning and importance of sustainable business practices that respect and adhere to best environmental science methods and ethical social responsibility standards. The context for this exploration will be corporate sustainability reports.

Learning Objectives (at the end of this course, students should be able to do the following).

Explain the vocabulary, concepts, and models of marketing, human resources, and sustainability

Summarize how a market orientation and commitment to sustainability can enhance customer and employee satisfaction

Describe how consumer markets are segmented, targeted, and products positioned to satisfy individual, government, and business consumers’ wants and needs

Compare techniques for creating value-added products, services, and ideas; valuing environmental and social externalities and managing traditional pricing; developing distribution strategies and “greening” the supply chain; and creating and implementing promotion campaigns

Define managerial and leadership styles and theories of motivation, persuasion, and influence

Summarize the human resource process of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, motivating, and evaluating employees

Describe sustainability reporting and the GRI indicators for measuring sustainability performance

Assess real world sustainability performance using corporate sustainability reports and GRI indicators

Analyze and interpret sustainability performance data

Learn how to use Excel spreadsheets

Summer Term B ESRM 321 (SLN 11414) is a 100% online course (except for the in-person final exam on August 20), and there is an optional second in person class, on July 23, to meet face to face and to introduce the course.

Overview.
We explore two of the four primary business dimensions: finance and accounting. Finance refers to the flows and uses of money among individuals, businesses, non-profit organizations, and governments and associated processes, institutions, and markets. Accounting involves recording, classifying, summarizing, and interpreting business transactions to provide management and stakeholders with information about a company’s performance, liquidity, growth, value, etc. Sustainability. (-:

“Novel, a short story padded.”

--Ambrose Bierce, The Devil’s Dictionary, 1911

“Each writer's prejudices, tastes, background, and experience tend
to limit the kinds of characters, actions, and settings he can honestly
care about, since by nature of our mortality we care about what we
know and might possibly lose (or have already lost), dislike that which
threatens what we care about, and feel indifferent toward that which has
no visible bearing on the safety of the people and things we love.”

--John Gardner
The Art of Fiction

This class in fiction celebrates the shorter rather than the longer narrative—the reading, writing, and interpretive critique of it, but some of our readings will be novellas, short novels. Ambrose Bierce will be one of the “unpadded” writers whose fiction we read with the above quotations in mind; that is, we will read stories as a means of investigating what subjects Ambrose Bierce and assorted other writers cared about and thought they might lose, just as we’ll analyze their narrative styles that often shocked reading publics —both then and now. Primary goals of the course include: increasing your reading enjoyment of the short fiction by sophisticating your reading practices and your awareness of how you interpret and assess fiction; exposing you to a variety of fictional authors, genres, styles, and literary movements; enhancing your critical abilities, both orally and in writing, to analyze, interpret and evaluate responses to stories.
