…without the need for any electronics, it was purely a finely honed, impressively simple mechanical creation. The FD2 is the modern day interpretation of it, a car that while no longer on sale, has beautifully carried over those raw driving characteristics that have further evolved thanks to more engineering and fine tuning, allowing the front wheels to do the impossible. And with a bit more fettling from tuning shops what you see here represents the pinnacle of FF capabilities. The 5Zigen FD2 is and remains the fastest ever FF car to lap Tsukuba Circuit, setting a time of 58.222 sec at the hands of pro driver Takashi Oi. We were actually there when he broke the record back in 2010 and took a little look at the car in the Tsukuba pits – but it has since been further perfected for a future lap record attempt so we could hardly pass up a chance to spend a few hours admiring its details.

5Zigen have approached the whole project much like they would the race cars that they have been building and racing for decades, which is why it looks very similar to what a Super Taikyu racer would…but far more extreme. You may spot the pumped fenders that barely contain…

…their original FN01R-C Hot Version wheels, fitted in 9.5Jx18″ +12 sizes all round. Rubber of choice is super sticky 255/40/R18 Dunlop Direzza 03G. One look at the Brembo Racing front 4-pot calipers and you know this car means business, a common set up used in motorsports offering great braking power and lightness to keep unsprung weight in check.

The Civic rides on custom built Endless race dampers running 28 kg/mm springs up front and 22 kg/mm coils at the rear. One off 5Zigen adjustable upper arms allow the ability to set a more aggressive amount of negative camber to help get the most grip out of the Dunlops through the corners. However, as you can probably imagine, without serious amounts of power a 58-sec lap at Tsukuba would be impossible…

…so after much success with their CL7 Accord Euro-R time attack car a few years back, this is what they came up with. The turbocharged K20 in the FD2 develops close to 100 HP more than the unit in the Accord…

…and that is without the use of nitrous oxide, which hasn’t been plugged in yet.

The engine has been completely rebuilt with higher performance components starting off with low-compression pistons, that along with a 1.2mm metal headgasket lower static compression down to 9.1:1. Lightweight I-section rods followed together with the finely balanced stock crank. Headwork consists in lots of porting and polishing as well as a valve spring upgrade courtesy of Toda Racing. The iVTEC system has been retained as it helps get good torque in the midrange…

…thanks to the 1.2 bar of boost the HKS T04S provides. The turbo has been mounted high next to the engine and plumbed in a way to help keep piping as short as possible.

It may look a little cramped under there but it all works well…

…including the exhaust system which couldn’t possibly have been made any shorter, dumping hot gasses straight out from the side of the bumper!

5Zigen aslo fabricated an air guide…

…that channels air from the hood-top intake down to the turbo. And of course where there’s boost there is always a need for more fuel, taken care of by a set of 1000 cc/min injectors fed by the Bosh fuel pumps you can see further down in the interior shots. In its present configuration the boosted K20 develops 515.7 HP at 7,630 rpm with a pretty impressive peak of 494.2 Nm (364.4 lb/ft) coming in at 6,050 rpm.

The functional body modifications are purely aimed at increasing the car’s aerodynamic performance and on top of the Igns N-spec kit comprising of FRP front & rear bumpers, side skirts and hood also boasts custom carbon front canards,the 5Zigen fender flares we talked about earlier on and a big Igns rear GT Wing. As you can see it looks right at home through the corners of Tsukuba.

The FD2 was handled much like the Super Taikyu racers that 5Zigen prepare, so before anything started the whole car was stripped down to a base shell, fitted with a bolt-in roll cage and reinforced around the front and rear suspension turrets. It’s all very simple inside with a single 5Zigen carbon-Kevlar bucket seat and Takata racing harnesses to help keep the driver tightly in place.

Only the very top section of the dashboard remains; it’s been flocked to help avoid nasty reflections on the windscreen…

…and is dotted with a few simple pieces of instrumentation like the Auto Meter rpm gauge…

…and a racecar type center-panel where all switches have been arranged.

A custom wired Motec M800 has been chosen to handle engine management and is positioned in the passenger side footwell for easy access.

Seeing and FD2 stripped like this shows just what a massive chassis the JDM version of the Civic Type-R was. This gives a better view of the whole layout…

Two Bosh Motorsport 044 external fuel pumps have the job of supplying the 4000 cc/min flow capability of the four Sard injectors.

Looking around the chassis you can also see the extent 5Zigen have gone to, in order to remove as much weight as possible, even swisscheesing the rear parcel shelf…

…as well as other non-structural, reinforcement sheet metal.

After having set the FF record at Tsukuba, 5Zigen have yet to return to the Super Battle.

With a little help form the already fitted nitrous oxide system this FD2 has obvious potential for an even faster lap time. They are 0.223 sec away from a 57-sec lap after all. I think I’m not the only one that hopes to see them back at this year’s Rev Speed event in December!

The Honda Civic Type R is definitely one of the most anticipated cars for 2015 as it is not only the fastest production FWD car to lap the Nurburgring, it is also the first Type R to be fitted with a turbocharged engine. While some might question the sharp and in-your-face looks of this new model, RevoZport figured that this new hot hatch can still do with a couple of improvements on its outlooks.

RevoZport had recently released a preview of two different bodykits offered for the new Civic Type R. The first one involves the removal of the huge rear wing in favour of a more subtle rear end similar to the Civic hatchback. From the sketches, they will also be installing new exhaust tips and a new diffuser as well.

Adding a set of canards in the front, RevoZport will also be adding a ‘991 GT3’-like air intake on the hood. Using carbon fiber for parts like the front splitter and side skirts, the car’s original rear wing can still be retained if the customer has no issues with it.

As for the time being, the changes made by RevoZport are pretty minimal, but we bet that they will be coming up with something more appealing in the next few months.

Honda Civic - 3 Turbo Engines! vtec is kicking in yo

The 2016 Paris Auto Show is set to start on Sept 29, but Honda couldn't wait to unveil it. They've released the latest 2017 Civic hatchback, which will also be displayed at the said motor show. The UK-built Civic will be marketed to 70 countries across the globe, and has made American debut last month.

Although the Honda Civic Hatchback still uses current 10^th generation Civic platform, the people at Honda did not just simply shrink the car’s boot and call it a day, but have also undergone styling and equipment changes.

Engine

First thing's first, the engine. This European-spec Civic Hatchback is reported to feature 3 powerplant options; a new 1.0-litre 3-cylinder VTEC Turbo engine making 127hp, a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder VTEC Turbo producing 180hp and a currently-in-development 1.6-litre i-DTEC turbodiesel which is set to gain improvements in terms of emissions and output figures.

The engines can be paired with either a Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) or a 6-speed manual transmission option.

Exterior

As for the exterior, the hatchback not only sees reduction in overall length. At the front, the car gets full LED headlights and redesigned clusters that house LED fog lights which appear to be more aggressive.

Moving to the rear, the hatchback features an integrated spoiler (a resemblance to the one on 8^th gen Civic Hatchback), larger air-vents-like elements at the rear bumper and centrally-mounted twin exhausts. There’s also an additional front splitter and side sills finished in gloss black as well as blacked out 18-inch wheels.

Interior

There are 3 audio systems to be chosen, comprised of 4, 8 or 11 speakers, each of them work in sync with 7-inch infotainment unit + Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality. The rear seats split-fold in 60:40 configuration, expanding its boot capacity to 478 litres.

Safety

The Civic Hatchback retains driver assistance from the regular 10^th gen Civic which include cruise control, lane keeping assistance, forward collision warning, hill-start assist, road departure sense, blind spot information and a collision mitigating braking system.

It is also reported that the new Civic Hatchback will be built in Thailand for ASEAN market. However, Honda Malaysia have yet to release any word of the car making its way to our market, unless there is sufficient demand for it.

New Honda Civic Type R

You wait ages and ages for a new Honda Civic Type R, and well, two arrive almost back-to-back. Yes, scarcely a year after we first drove the current banzai Civic, Honda has just unveiled a concept version of the next-gen car, due to go on sale worldwide in 2017. And once again, it wants a Nürburgring lap record.

Officially called the Type R Prototype, the car you’re gawping at is strictly a concept for now (though doesn’t it look production ready?) so there’s nothing in the way of technical data. But we do know it will stay front-wheel drive, both to stick with Type R tradition, and to allow Honda to get its FWD Nordschleife honours back from VW, who nicked them with the Golf GTI Clubsport S.

And this Civic really is ‘worldwide’. No Civic Type R has ever been officially sold in the USA – it’s been a case of import your own at great expense with much tedious paperwork. But because the new Civic hatchback is a global car, aimed at Japan, Europe and indeed the USA, the angry-looking Type R will also land Stateside. It will still be built in Swindon, though.

Having recently gone to the trouble of building a 306bhp 2.0-litre turbo VTEC powerplant, the new Type R will use that engine. Though we suspect it will be a little uprated to keep pace with the likes of the 345bhp Ford Focus RS, and to give it an edge over the Golf (and perhaps other rivals) for that lap time.

Beneath the skin, it’s based on the all-new Mk10 Civic platform, and the Type R is set to borrow the same variable steering system and refreshed rear suspension setup. Honda has designed the standard Civic to be more fun than ever to drive, and engineers say it’s been a great springboard for making a bona fide performance version. We’re promised a sharper chassis than ever.

Drumming up a little excitement for the 2013 FIA World Touring Automotive Championship, Honda brought its new Civic WTCC car to the brilliant lights of Geneva for all to determine.
Honda joined WTCC late last year entering the ultimate three races. The racing outfit will run this year's entire twelve-round season, which kicks off later this month in Italy.

Within the off-season, Honda made some updates to its WTCC entry together with better aerodynamics, improved suspension and braking and varied engine and turbo enhancements. Two teams can field the new Civic racecar during this year's season: Honda Racing Team JAS and a private team from Hungary, Zengo Motorsport.

Fans of the WTCC within the US will be happy to grasp that series makes a come back visit to Sonoma Raceway on September eight for the Race of the United States.

The Honda S2000 was a roadster manufactured by Japanese automaker Honda between 1999 and 2009. First shown as a concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1995, the production version was launched in April 1999 to celebrate the company's 50th anniversary. The S2000 is named for its engine displacement of 2 liters, carrying on in the tradition of the S500, S600, and S800 roadsters of the 1960s.
Several revisions were made throughout the car's lifetime, including changes to the engine, gearbox, suspension, and interior and exterior. Officially two variants exist: the initial launch model was given the chassis code AP1, while the AP2 designation was given to vehicles produced from mid-2003 onwards. Though cosmetically similar, the AP2 incorporated significant changes to the drivetrain and suspension. Production of the S2000 ceased in June 2009. In Japan, it was exclusively sold through the Honda Verno sales channel.

Mugen of Japan has engineered a Honda CR-Z Mugen RR design concept to demonstrate Mugen's capabilities in terms of operate, style, performance and agility. The Honda CR-Z Mugen RR was made by M-TEC in Japan for show functions only and there are currently no plans for any production.

The Honda CR-Z Mugen RR has been created with many bespoke prototype components, several of that are created in carbon fibre, including the bonnet, passenger doors and rear tailgate. Other options distinctive to the automotive embody a full length carbon-fibre underbody, a twin central-exit exhaust, vented front bumpers and race-developed suspension. Orange 4-piston monobloc brake calipers and solid 18-in. alloy wheels both complement the colourful Valencia Orange Pearl exterior paint work.

Inside the car, the seats are clad in Mugen-branded color-coded leather/Alcantara. The addition of a race-developed information screen has the power to record chassis and engine data also housing a Satellite navigation and audio system. This high tech kit will monitor the automobile over two laps to "learn" a circuit and then record lap information and vehicle tracking using GPS.

The design concept was unveiled for its world debut at the start of July 201one in the Moving Motor Show space at Goodwood Festival of Speed and enhances the high-performance Honda CR-Z Mugen, that was designed and built by Mugen Euro primarily based within the UK.

Transforming a stock 2012 Civic Si Coupe into a competitive race car for the World Challenge is easier than you think.

As Soichiro Honda once said – “Without racing there is no Honda.” And quite rightly so, with avid Honda fans eager to pull their cars apart in order to let loose the racing soul lying within, or quite happy to make do with what’s being offered – knowing what lies beneath the hood has been race inspired.

Many of us have probably been to the workshop to watch in eager anticipation as tools connect to the car that’s being…well, disassembled. Often times, we need to watch our cars undergo ‘open heart surgery’ as the engine gets extracted – worked on and then re-inserted only to start kicking again and sounding sweeter to get your heart racing faster than a shot of adrenalin.

Meet racing surgeons of Compass 360 Racing, who will be conducting a walk-through of what they will be doing to a standard 2012 Honda Civic Si to turn it into a contender for the Grand Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

Watch as they strip out the car of its comfort and engine and enforce a triage on the parts that will make the cut or will be replaced, with the insertion of a roll-cage and the final re-assembly of the Civic – including the 4-cylinder 2.4L VTEC engine that’s been tuned by Honda Performance Development (HPD) to produce 25% more ponies than the standard engine thanks to the use of an improved intake and exhaust flow as well as other mechanical wizardry that’s gone into the Civic.

The Honda Civic Type R EK9 may be a performance three-door hatchback designed for the Japanese Domestic Market. The formula employed in building all Type R Honda vehicles is weight reduction and high rpm power. In search of sports-car kicks, but with the abundance of speed parts and vast modification potential of a Civic? Look no further than Honda's feisty little CRX.These pocket-size coupes made their debut in 1984. Essentially a two-seat version of the redesigned Civic also introduced that year, the CRX was initially aimed at people looking for frugal displacement (base 1.3-liter versions had EPA rates fuel economy of 51 mpg city, 67 highway) .

But the real news for enthusiasts came the following year, when Honda CRX sport if his version, which included upgraded suspension, performance tires oriented, and hotter than 91 horsepower version of its engine 1.5 l - good for sub-nine-second 0-60 mph times in the featherweight car.For the year 1988, a completely new CRX bowed, based again on a new Civic platform.Wheelbase increased CRX, and this second generation design was somewhat heavier and larger in general. Regardless of what generation or modification level, CRXs little Honda can offer fashion and fun. They perform well, for starters, there are plenty of things available aftermarket, and prices are as low as performance cars go. Check 'em.

Block cracked around the oil pressure switch so I bought a TSX engine and will no longer need this head.

Head has 80K miles on it, was only used for about 2k miles

Honda always knew that the CR-Z would be well received among enthusiasts. With the current trend to go green, the little hybrid sports car offers something that no eco car out there has so far, like its sporty dynamics and the option of a 6-speed manual gearbox. Being reasonably lightweight the CR-Z has a lot of potential if any owner was thinking of upgrading a few things here and there, something a lot of Japanese shops and parts manufacturers have set out to prove. While down in Suzuka recently I stopped by one of Japans better known tuning garages, Esprit, where I took a look at their own take on Honda's throwback to the legendary CR-X.

As with all of their past demo cars you can expect this CR-Z to get pretty extreme as development progresses but to start things off they have first concentrated on the exterior...

..along with the side skirts. The rear spoiler, hood and black side mirrors covers are additional little touches.

The rear bumper is just as aggressive as the front thanks to the integrated diffuser on the lower section as well as flush fitting exhaust finishers. With Honda officially confirming that production in Japan of the K20 engine will cease, Honda enthusiasts will be wondering what the future has in store for them, particularly in terms of the venerable Type R. A glimmer of hope has come from Mugen Euro, who have unveiled a new take on the FN2 Civic Type R by stroking it to 2.2 litres. Last year 20 Mugen-tweaked CTRs were released in the UK, although no specific announcements have been made regarding this year's version which has 30% more power and torque over the standard model.
Hiro Toyoda, vice-president of MUGEN Euro, commented: "Environmental pressures mean naturally aspirated engines are rapidly being superseded by other engine architectures and technologies. We may never see the like of the K20 in a mainstream production car again, so felt it only fitting we mark the occasion with this special 2.2 version of the Honda Civic Type R".

Development of the supercharged Honda CR-Z is on track, with performance figures already looking promising.

Early tests with a prototype car based on a standard CR-Z and a mid-tune engine have given 0-60mph times around that of the Civic Type R.

After a further 15 per cent increase in power over this 'stage 1' engine and with over 50kg reduced from the chassis, overall performance is set to meet MUGEN's original targets.

"Early fuel consumption tests have also been encouraging," says Colin Whittamore from MUGEN Euro. "We've retained the three driving modes from the standard car and economy ranges from 50+mpg in 'eco' mode to mid-30 mpg when tapping into the supercharged power in a special 'MUGEN' mode."

On Sunday, I left early for a day at the beach. Not to work on my tan but for the annual Japanese Car Festival on Circuit Park Zandvoort that is situated in the dunes close to the beach. As the name of the event suggests it was all about the love for Japanese cars. When I arrived at the venue I was surprised to see so many cars and the sheer diversity was amazing.

The builds are becoming more complex; with completely build engines, wire tucks, static drops and stripped interiors.

A Lamborghini Gallardo was destroyed by a group of men in the Chinese city of Qindao. The owner of the Italian sports car decided to smash it to show his disappointment with Lamborghini.

The Lamborghini Gallardo was bought six months ago, but the engine failed to start on November 29, 2010. The owner contacted the Lamborghini dealer in Qingdao and they transported the Gallardo to their maintenance center. The engine problem wasn't solved, but instead the bumper and chassis were damaged by the transport. The owner complained by the dealer but they refused to take responsibility in this matter, so the angry owner contacted Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann, the brand's China headquarters, its after-sales service manager for Asia-Pacific region, and the brand's owner Volkswagen Group, but the problem was not solved.

Angry about the service, the owner felt his consumer rights were ignored. So he decided that the best way to gain attention was to destroy his car on the 15th of March, which is also World Consumer Rights Day. Apparently, he hired people to publicly destroy his car with hammers and make his statement. This protest was made to provoke public support and goad the manufacturer to respect his consumer rights.

It's been almost 10 years since I've found myself glued to any form of instant media consumption device like I have the past few days. I've completely lost count of how many times I've hit refresh on my preferred news outlets or how many hours I've sat wide eyed staring at my Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook streams waiting for any good news to come out of the earthquakes, tsunamis and problems with various Nuclear powerplants.

It has been scenes like this partially submerged and undistinguishable sports car (from The Atlantic's In Focus), with its Volk Racing wheels and Project Mu brake rotors, which really touch home for a good portion of us as we waited for news of how the various tuning shops and racetracks faired in the aftermath.
Dino has done a great job in updating us with the state of tracks like Ebisu and Tsukuba through out Facebook page which you can see here, here, here and here. It has been a particularly difficult time for us, as many of the Speedhunters family and friends have been affected by these tragic events.

Cars, shops and racetracks can be repaired, rebuilt, and/or replaced but the people that are at the heart of these things cannot. We here at Speedhunters wish the Japanese people the best of luck in the recovery and rebuilding.

KYUSHUDANJI-TOMIYOSHI RACING NSX - Honda NSX

We all know how the great Ayrton Senna was responsible for fine-tuning the handling and chassis of Honda's greatest sports car, and the driver of the Kyushudanji NSX, Hannita-san, obviously has a lot of respect for the greatest driver that ever lived. Since managing to get a 56-second lap at Tsukuba his NSX has been all over the internets.

because as far as I know, no naturally aspirated NSX has ever gone quite so fast around Tsukuba Circuit. In fact I think I can count in one hand the amount of NA cars that have lapped Tsukuba in under a minute, so a 56'959 is simply incredible.

The widened exterior of this 1999 Honda NSX has been fitted with a Super-GT inspired front lip spoiler and massive canards to help the front end bite down hard at speed.

56 seconds around Tsukuba is seriously quick and it's usually 650+ HP turbocharged cars that manage to record times like this. So you can imagine how happy the driver of the Kyushudanji NSX was when he managed to lap Tsukuba in 56"959 sec this past Sunday at the Battle Evome session. Turn your speakers up and enjoy.
