Happy July everyone! Here in Detroit we are expecting this month to be hot and humid. I am planning to duck the humidity in the movie theater… a girl has to have a few good hair days. There are several great movies I am excited to see this month, from a Disney sequel to a funny comedy starring the hilarious Melissa McCarthy. Here are my four must see picks with trailers to get you pumped. Please leave a comment and let me know which you are intrigued to see.
Tammy – July 2nd A comedy starring the hilarious Melissa McCarthy…just hearing her name makes me laugh. A bad day for Tammy (Melissa McCarthy) just keeps getting worse. All in one day she has wrecked her car, caught her husband cheating and lost her job at the burger joint. Wanting to get away from it all she settles for a vacation with her grandmother Pearl (Susan Sarandon). The adventure begins with the two of them, we are in for a modern day Thelma and Louise LOL. Click Tammy to watch the trailer.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – July 11th The sequel to 2011 Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Caeser (Andy Serkis) is back, the head primate leading a nation genetically involved apes. They are threatened by a band of human survivors the of the devastating virus that spreaded ten years ago. One of the survivors Malcolm (Jason Clarke) has created a bond with the apes but a few others want to kill them for revenge. A peace bond was short lived, when a all in war begins to determine which species will dominate earth. I am anticipating this film to be intense with lots of action. Click to watch this action packed Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Planes: Fire and Rescue – July 18th Another cute film from Disney, the sequel to the 2013 airborne adventure Planes. Dusty (Dane Cook) the famous airplane racer is facing a career ending injury that prevents him from flying and competing in the Wings Around the World race. Faced with a career change Dusty returns home and decides to join a flying rescue team called the The Smokejumpers to become an aerial firefighter. As a team they set out to battle a fierce wildfire in Piston Peak National Park. A fan of magical creators at Disney, they always make great films that we adults and children can relate too. I love animation especially when things talk that aren’t human. Check out the the trailer of Dusty and his the Smokejumpers.
Lucy – July 25th The action thriller starring Scarlett Johansson as Lucy….its nothing like a female action hero GIRL POWER. Lucy is accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic. The plot and the trailer has me pumped to see this and Morgan Freeman is starring along with her in this film. Watch and tell me what you think.
You know it’s spring and summer is coming when you begin to see watermelons at the local fruit market. In my opinion it’s the best in the melon family. I give myself an A+ for picking the perfect watermelon and a F- when it comes to cutting it. A combination of size, odd shape and the incorrect knife are all contributors to the failure. The old saying is true…practice makes perfect. Today I am sharing with you my basic steps to cutting a watermelon.
3. With the watermelon upright, angle your knife and begin to cut off rind.4. Cut the watermelon in half, slice into half moon pieces or chunks
5. Grab a fork and kick back and eat!photos by Lotoya Vongrechin
Happy May my friends! In the movie world this month is the official kickoff to summer. From now until Labor Day there is a mix of superheroes, comedies and anticipated sequels scheduled to hit the big screen. I wonder what film(s) will be crowned the 2014 blockbuster. Before my social calendar begins to fill for the summer I have blocked Fridays for movie night…only my fellow movie buffs can relate. Here are my movie picks:
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – May 2nd
The legendary Marvel comic character is back again. The story goes beyond living a double life as the ordinary Peter Parker and the secretly amazing Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) This time Spider-Man is up against a new powerful villain named Electro (Jamie Foxx). He will stop at nothing to live a regular life with his girlfriend Gwen (Emma Stone) and to protect his fellow New Yorkers. I am looking forward to seeing Spider-Man win.
Neighbors – May 9th
A family with a newborn baby moves into a home next door to a college fraternity house. Are you thinking, what I am thinking?… a living nightmare. Get ready to laugh out loud, Seth Rogan and Zac Efron are hilarious together. See for yourself, take a look at the movie trailer. This movie takes me back to my college days, I can’t imagine living next door to college students.
Godzilla – May 16th
A rebirth of the worlds most famous monster, Godzilla. This sci-fi film will take us back to the beginning when this powerful and destructive monster was introduced to today but with a twist. I am not sure I know what to expect from this movie, but it takes me back to my childhood of watching tv movies. That alone has me interested to this film and to see Bryan Cranston in this unusual role.
X Men: Days of Future Past – May 23rd
The trilogy continues for all the X Men fans, Bryan Singer is incorporating the plot with characters from the original trilogy and 2011’s First Class. The plot will go back in time to with an attempt to avoid a series of events that will lead to a catastrophic future. I am anticipating action from beginning to end, but more importantly we may be able to see Huge Jackman and Halle Berry alongside James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence. Check out the trailer here.
Maleficent – May 30th
The untold story of the villain of the Disney’s classic Sleeping Beauty. We all know the story of Sleeping Beauty, but what happened before that resulted in Maleficent not being invited to the christening. As a Disney fan I have been anticipating this movie for a few months, it was originally set to be released in March. I am completely obsessed with the look of Angelina Jolie in her costume, its really inspiring my look for Halloween at the moment. The headpiece is everything.
I realize there a dozen more movies set to release this month, but based on my picks what are you excited to see? Leave a comment, I am look forward to chatting throughout the month on our reviews.

Is anyone else still high from the hottest fashions and heartfelt speeches from the 86th annual Oscars this past Sunday? One word WOW. 2013 was an historical year in film, and I have a feeling there’s more to come…my eyes are on award season 2015. Movies are a favorite past time for LMc (my 6’2 future husband…wink wink) and I. He is a movie fanatic and I have become quite the novice critic. Believe it or not, we catch a movie or two every weekend. I am so excited to introduce you to a new series on the blog, called “Now Playing On The Big Screen”. Each month I will share my must see movie picks followed by reviews. Let’s kick this series off with a bang here are my March picks:
300: Rise of an Empire – March 7, 2014 The follow up to the 2006 blockbuster film 300, the battlefield has moved to the seas of Greece. General Themistocles is leading the charge to reunite Greece. It’s been rated 5 stars by Moviefone, that alone has me pumped to see this action packed flick.
The Single Moms Club – March 14, 2014 Tyler Perry has done it again, a real life film thats relatable by many. The story of five struggling moms who form a sisterly bond, that provides the support and inspiration to overcome life’s obstacles together. Not based on a true story but certainly full of funnies and tiny life lessons. As a product of a single mom, I can’t wait to see this film.
Rob the Mob – March 21, 2014 Based on a true life story of a Queens New York couple who robbed a series of mafia social clubs and continued to get away with it. The next job will be a challenge they never encountered, they become targets to the mafia and FBI. I’ve always loved a good mafia film, the unspoken yet super powerful lifestyle is quiet intriguing.
Noah – March 28, 2014 Starring the talented Russell Crowe as Noah, based on the biblical story in the book of Genesis. This film depicts the the power of the Holy Spirit, before and after the flood that destroyed the world. Stories in the bible are fascinating to me and to see them played out on the big screen gives me another level of understanding. I look forward to the work of the visionary director Darren Afronosky.
Join in the fun with me, what movies are you anticipating this month? I’d love to hear, I am always looking to add more films to my must see list. After all I need other movie buffs that I can share my favorite scenes and lines with.]]>
Super Bowl Sunday was the highlight of the weekend. So much money went into making the game day a huge success. As a football fan, I watched the game with the fellas all excited, but in reality, I could say that this year’s Super Bowl was pretty lack-luster. The game turned out to be the “sidekick”, as the commercials were the main attraction! So, I’ve decided to share my sentiments on some of my favorite Super Bowl XLVIII commercials. Here’s my top eight picks :
Double up with Ford Fusion Hybrid
Puppy Love from Budweiser
Simply Life from Chevrolet
Strike from Masseratti Ghibli
Technology Empowering from Microsoft
U2 Invisible by Bank of America
The Time Machine by Doritos
Gracie our family is Growing by Cheerios
Big Bear from Chobani
Check out the links and let me know if you saw any worthy commercial that didn’t make my list! I can’t wait to hear from you!
Happy Monday everyone. Today’s post is from a new member of the VAE team. Her name is Erynn Edwards, stay tuned to the blog she will be making her formal debut very soon. I will give you a hint about her, she has a beautiful spirit and its reflected in her post today.
Smile! Today is the national holiday honoring the birthday of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The other night, when I was on the phone with my hunny, he told me about one of his coworkers asking him, “Why are we closed on Monday?”.
Listening to this, I realized that many of us forget what today represents or see today only as an “extended weekend”. Between being working women, pleasing our significant other, taking care of our family, and just dealing with life’s drama, we desperately need a vacation!
I admit, I made plans well in advance to attend a midday Detroit Pistons basketball game with my friends. Not until I began to write this post, did I truly do my own reflecting in honor of MLK Day. Like the rest of us, I was just happy to switch up my normal routine.
We get so wrapped up in our own lives that we forget to reflect on the impact Dr. King has made on society. I have challenged myself to find my personal beliefs on what signifies the legacy of MLK and share my thoughts with you. I feel this day represents the increase of:
Everyday, I want to work toward improving my approaches to situations through my attitudes and outlook. I am choosing to take this day to perpetuate optimism— as Dr. King has taught us. What will you do today to celebrate the strides of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.?

After the joy of the holidays are over, there’s something about live evergreens that keep my spirit perky during the dreary winter months. Yes, all the holiday decor is packed away but I am still holding on to the live door wreath. Although the smell and color has faded, the fullness hasn’t diminished. Today’s DIY is a quick and simple way to transform a live evergreen wreath.

For the new year I’ve made a personal vow to eat 5 fruits and vegetables a day. Beginning my day with a smoothie has helped me honor my commitment. The first time I made a smoothie it was rated NF for nasty fail. Who knew there was an art to creating smoothie recipes. Mine always had a thin consistency, and tasted like raw bland vegetables…yes you can imagine YUCK. Clearly I need to follow a proven recipe. After months of wasted ingredients, I’ve finally got it. Today I am sharing with you my favorite morning treat, Dandelion Berry Peach Smoothie recipe.
2 cups Dandelion leaves
1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
1/2 cup frozen peaches
1/2 cup frozen mixed berries
1/2 cup water
1 tsp sunflower oil
Add all of the ingredients in the following order; yogurt, water, peaches, berries, dandelion and oil.
Blend on high, until smoothie consistency, pour into glass and serve.
Yields: 1 serving
