Microsoft: Xbox 360 to Sell 100m, Next Gen Consoles to Sell 1 Billion

Microsoft’s senior vice president of Interactive Entertainment Business Yusuf Mehdi spoke with OXM about the sales of the Xbox 360, as well as the next generation of consoles. He expects the Xbox 360 to sell at least 100 million units before it is taken off the market.Half of the sales in the future he says will be replacement, while the other half will be new buyers.

"We believe over the next five years we can break a 100 million unit installed base," said Medhi. "That's something we're shooting for, it's not a financial plan as such, it's just rough numbers if you will. To sell another 25 million, half of those will probably come from replacements, but half will come from new buyers."

"And the way we'll break into those segments is by hitting new price points, getting new classes of entertainment to come with the Xbox, and breaking into new customer segments," he continued. "So you'll see the Xbox 360 continue to exist, even as we launch the next generation Xbox One."

He made a bold prediction when it comes to the next generation of consoles. Industry experts are expecting sales of 400 million between the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U, which is about a 30 percent increase over what the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii are expected to sell lifetime. Mehdi is expecting that with an entertainment device that isn't dedicated to gaming that sales could reach one billion.

"Every generation, as you've probably heard, has grown approximately 30%," he said. "So this generation is about 300 million units. Most industry experts think the next generation will get upwards of about 400 million units. That's if it's a game console, over the next decade."

"We think you can go broader than a game console, that's our aim, and you can go from 400 million to potentially upwards of a billion units. That's how we're thinking of the Xbox opportunity as we go forward."

Metro: The Last Light (X360) sales are expected to drop to around 25,000 units in its second week on sale. The PlayStation 2 version is expected to drop to around 15,000 units.

Other Hot Games – In Order of Release

The Last of Us (PS3) is now the most pre-ordered game in the US. It added 17,003 pre-orders, up from 9,996 last week, for a total of 295,519. The game has risen from 44,000 to 46,000 pre-orders ahead of Uncharted 3 during the same number of weeks before release. The game is four weeks away from launch in the USA, June 14, 2013.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS) added 19,084 pre-orders, down from 11,441 last week, for a total of 221,927. The game is four weeks away from launch in the USA, June 9, 2013.

Grand Theft Auto V (X360) added 4,968 pre-orders, down from 5,970 last week, for a total of 287,296. The PlayStation 3 version added 4,457 up from 3,659 pre-orders for a total of 246,477. The game is 18 weeks away from launch in the USA, September 17, 2013.

Battlefield 4 (X360) added 5,882 pre-orders, down from 8,069 last week, for a total of 138,086. Battlefield 4 (PS3) added 3,309 pre-orders, down from 5,814 last week, for a total of 53,177. The game will be released on October 29, 2013.

Notable mentions: Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX (PS3) added 18,144 pre-orders for a total of 50,930. Call of Duty: Ghosts (X360) added 24,986 pre-orders for a total of 50,493. Call of Duty: Ghosts (PS3) added 18,251 pre-orders for a total of 37,554.

Requests: Watch Dogs (X360) added 1,077 pre-orders for a total of 11,190. Saints Row IV (X360) added 1,472 pre-orders for a total of 9,900. Gran Turismo 6 (PS3) entered the charts this week with just 243 pre-orders.

GameStop 1st Quarter 2013 Sales Drop 6.8%

GameStop has released its first quarter of its 2013 fiscal year, which ended May 4, 2013. Revenue dropped 6.8 percent to $1.87 billion, from $2.00 billion the same quarter a year ago. Profits for the quarter were also down, to $54.6 million, from $72.5 million.

"GameStop’s continuing margin expansion, growing new businesses and market share gains are the results of executing our strategic plan," said GameStop CEO Paul Raines. "We look forward to capitalizing on the upcoming new console cycle."

New software sales decreased 3.8 percent to $703.2 million, from $731.1 million a year ago. New hardware sales decreased by a massive 30.6 percent to $241.8 million, from $348.6 million. Pre-owned sales decreased to $572.6 million, from $619.0 million. Mobile sales have grown by 290 percent year-on-year, while digital receipts grew 47.3 percent.

Microsoft: Home Console Market to Grow 30% in 8th Generation

Microsoft Europe's VP of Interactive Chris Lewis has told GamesIndustry International that the 8th generation of home consoles, the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U, will be 30 percent larger than the previous generation, the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii.

The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii have managed to sell 254 million units as of the week ending May 11, according to VGChartz. A 30 percent increase would mean the 8th generation of home consoles will sell at least 330 million units.

"This generation 7 that we're in right now, it's 50 per cent bigger than generation 6 and I think double the size of generation 5," said Lewis. "Our anticipation is that generation 8 will be at least 30 per cent bigger still."

The 7th generation has been the longest on record. The Xbox 360 launched in 2005 and the Xbox One is set to be released in late 2013, eight years later. It will also be a seven year gap between the release of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. It was Nintendo who went with a more traditional gap between its consoles. The Wii U launched six years after the Wii.

"There is a strong trajectory there," Lewis said. "I think people liked the length of the generation. Our partners certainly did. Retail loved the length of the generation, at least in terms of the attach and the additional services and content they can attach. Our developers like the longevity of the platform because they get better at bringing and optimising content for that platform."

Microsoft killed off the original Xbox when the Xbox 360 launched, but Lewis said that will not be the case with the Xbox 360 when the Xbox One launches. The Xbox 360 will continue to be supported in the years to come.

"Xbox 360 will continue for another multiple-year time frame," said Lewis. "We've already got meaningful marketing plans for the next 12 months for Xbox 360 and beyond. Our third-party publishers will bring more content to it, because the installed base is so high."

Indie Developers Need a Publisher to Release Games on the Xbox One

Matt Booty, the general manager of Redmond Game Studios and Platforms, has told Shack News that independent developers will not be able to publish their own games on the Xbox Live Arcade. They will need a publishing deal with Microsoft Game Studios or with a third-party publisher. Only games published on the Xbox Live Indie Games will be exempt.

"As of right now, yes," said Booty when asked if developers will need a publisher to release content onto Xbox Live. "We intend to continue to court developers in the ways that we have."

"I would also expect that for this new generation, that we're going to continue to explore new business models and new ways of surfacing content," he added. "But Microsoft Studios is a publisher that works with a wide range of partners, as do a lot of other people, to bring digital content to the box."

Microsoft is the only console maker that doesn't allow self publishing. Sony and Nintendo allow developers to publish their own games onto their networks.

GameStop: Xbox One, PlayStation 4 Games Can Be Resold

GameStop president Tony Bartel has told Forbes that games for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 can be resold. There has been a lot of confusion after the Xbox One reveal yesterday whether the system will be able to play used games or not.

"Both Sony and Microsoft have said games can be resold and that’s exactly what we anticipated," said Bartel,. "It’s a recognized way to make these games more affordable. All three new platforms understand that."

Bartel also discussed the lack of backwards compatibility in the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The majority of people who upgraded to the PlayStation 3 sold their PlayStation 2 and games, which he believes is why Sony got rid of backwards compatibility in the PlayStation 3.

"As people upgraded to PS3 they traded in their old systems and libraries, which is why Sony made the move to not support backwards compatibility with later iterations of PS3," added Bartel. "That’s why the 'buy, sell, trade' model works well. It enables people to purchase new games by trading in their old ones. We expect to see the same thing with this transition for PS4 and Xbox One. Trade-ins allow for a seamless transition."

He also added that 70 percent of the $1 billion GameStop puts into the trade market goes back into the sale of new games.

Rare Bringing 'Historic' Franchise to the Xbox One, Reveal at E3

Microsoft Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer has told Polygon that Rare will be bringing back an "historic" franchise for the Xbox One. The game will be shown at E3 this year and Spencer believes it will be important for the Xbox One's success.

"Fans of Rare and Rare IP I think will be pleased with what we're going to show at E3," said Spencer. "We had a limited amount of time today and a lot of story to tell. But Rare remains an incredibly important part of our development capability. That historic IP that they've built I think can play a real important role on Xbox One."

Microsoft purchased Rare 11 years ago and Microsoft gained the rights to Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, Killer Instinct, and Perfect Dark. Rare did release a Perfect Dark and Banjo-Kazooie title on the Xbox 360. Microsoft did renew the Killer Instinct trademark in September 2012.

3DS and Wii Taiko Drum Master Games Ship 500,000 in Japan

Namco Bandai has announced that the two latest releases in the Taiko Drum Master have shipped 500,000 units in Japan. The news comes from Siliconera. The two games Taiko Drum Master: The Little Dragon and the Mysterious Orb (3DS) and Taiko Drum Master: Super Splendid Edition (Wii) were only released in Japan and prove that the rhythm genre isn't dead yet.

The games feature music from many popular franchises. The Wii title features music from Dragon Quest X, Monster Hunter Tri G and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The 3DS title has music from SoulCalibur V, Tales of the Abyss, Tekken 3D Prime Editio, and even from the film My Neighbor Totoro.

Microsoft: E3 to Focus on the Games for the Xbox One

Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg has stated that today Xbox One reveal was about the console and its features, which meant that games were put second. However, he did announce that Microsoft will focus on the games coming out for the Xbox One at it's E3 Press Conference.

"We probably right now aren’t talking about [games] maybe as much as we should, because we’re talking so much about what’s new," said Greenberg. "People know we have gaming, and so we’re talking about entertainment and TV and all of the other things that we’re doing."

"But, when we go to E3 you’ll see us go almost all gaming, and that’ll be our main focus there," Greenberg continued. "We know it’s like us being musicians, and that’s the rock concert – people don’t want to hear slow songs, they just want rock, so we’re giving them rock for 90 minutes. And we’ve got a lot of games, and I would say our third party relationships are the tightest we’ve ever seen."

Microsoft's Don Mattrick at the reveal today did say that Microsoft Game Studios is planning to release 15 exclusives for the Xbox One in its first year. Two of these games were revealed today, Forza Motorsport 5 and a new IP from Remedy Quantum Break.

Ubisoft Working on 6 Xbox One Games, to be Released in First Year

Ubisoft has announced they are working on six games for the Xbox One that will be released in the console's first year. Two of the titles were previously announced and are coming out on other platforms, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Watch Dogs.

"The next generation of consoles will reinvigorate our industry and make it possible for us to deliver incredible new entertainment to gamers," said Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft CEO. "Our teams are using the innovations in connectivity, immersion and social gaming included in Xbox One to create original and memorable next-gen gaming experiences."

Ubisoft will be holding its E3 2013 press conference on Monday June 10.

Activision: Call of Duty to Continue to Grow

Many critics have claimed that the Call of Duty has reached its peak and the franchise has started a decline. However, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg has stated that franchise has never been stronger and Call of Duty: Ghosts will set a franchise record.

"Sometimes people have suggested that this franchise is cresting or has crested," said Hirshberg to MCVUK. "And I know it seems like it should. But there’s just one problem. It’s not. In fact, by just about every measure we look at, Call of Duty has never been stronger. This franchise is not only still vibrant, it is still growing. Sales of the game, sales of the downloadable content, number of monthly active users, the number of daily active users, average play, social media influence, whatever you look at, hard measures or soft measures, this is a franchise that is still on the rise after all this time."

"That’s remarkable," added Hirshberg. "Keeping Call of Duty relevant, growing, thriving and still surprising people is not easy. In fact, it might actually be the hardest creative assignment of them all. We are all attracted to the blank page, the creative opportunities where there are no restrictions, but a franchise like Call of Duty has more responsibility to its fans.

"And then to keep coming up with new and meaningful ways to innovate each and every time, to keep it fresh and exciting," concluded Hirshberg. "I think our teams have done that better than anyone."

Call of Duty: Ghosts was first shown today at the Xbox One Reveal. The game is set to be released on November 5th for the current generation and next generation consoles.

Xbox One Not Backwards Compatible with the Xbox 360

Microsoft Xbox Live VP Marc Whitten has told The Verge that the Xbox One will not have backwards compatibility. This is due the console having a different core architecture than the Xbox 360.

"No, there's not," said Whitten when asked about backwards compatibility. "The system is based on a different core architecture, so back-compat doesn't really work from that perspective."

The Xbox One uses an x86 CPU, while the Xbox 360 uses a Xenon processor. Games won't be able to run natively on the new hardware due the difference. The PlayStation 4 has the same problem, but Sony did promise PlayStation 3 games will be playable at some point through the cloud.

It is possible for the Xbox One to do the same thing in the future, but nothing has been announced at this time.

$65B Spent on Gaming, Fastest Growing Entertainment Sector

Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg spoke on Major Nelson's podcast about the video game industry as a whole and how well it is performing when compared to other entertainment industries.

Gamers spent $65 billion on video games in 2012, with consoles leading the industry. $28 billion have been spent on console gaming, which is 42 percent of the total sales. The PC sector just edges out the Mobile / Tablet sector with $12 billion in sales, compared to $10 billion. Handheld gaming, which includes the 3DS and PlayStation Vita accounts, accounts for $8 billion in gaming sales. The Social / Browser sector has caught up with handhelds at $8 billion.

The home console sales have grown consistently since the 5th generation, PlayStation 1 and Nintendo 64. There were 150 million home consoles sold in the 5th generation, while sales grew 30 percent to 200 million in the 6th generation. The 6th generation includes the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube. Console sales skyrocketed in the 7th generation with 300 million units sold to date. The 7th generation includes the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The 7th generation is on track to double the sales of the 6th generation.

Microsoft has also released their projections for the 8th generation which includes the next Xbox, PlayStation 4 and Wii U. The 8th generation is expected to grow 28 percent from the 7th generation, to 385 million consoles sold.

As a whole the video game industry is on track to become the biggest entertainment sector. It is currently growing at 7 percent per year which is higher than any other entertainment sector. TV subscriptions are growing at 6.8 percent per year, TV ads by 4.6 percent, Radio by 3.2 percent, Music by 1.9 percent, and film by 1.7 percent. The Newspaper, Magazine and Book industries have been showing a slight decline, though less than one percent.

The video game industry has surpassed the film industry when it comes to blockbusters. Call of Duty II: Black Ops II reached $650 million in sales in just five days, while the Avengers film made $373 million in 10 days. More recently Iron Man 3 produced $285 million in sales in its first 10 days. In the US, the Home Console market has reached the US Box Office market in 2012 with $11 billion in sales each.

Other figures include more than one billion people playing games online worldwide and video game software sales have made $12.1 billion in profit.

Top 10 in Sales - Grand Theft Auto

Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.

This week we will be looking at the top 10 selling Grand Theft Auto games. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling games in April 2013 and the week before that the top 10 selling Tomb Raider games.

Looking at the top 10 bestselling Grand Theft Auto games, two of the games were released in the 1990’s and eight of the games were released in the 2000’s. Grand Theft Auto V which is set to be released later this year will be the first in the franchise to be released in the 2010’s.

The two games released in 1990’s, Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto II, sold a combined 5.98 million units or 5.4 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. It wasn’t until the release of Grand Theft Auto III on the PlayStation 2 in October 2001 that it became one of the top selling franchises in the industry. The majority of the games sales have occurred since them. In the top 10 alone, 94.6 percent of the sales occurred since the release of Grand Theft Auto III.

The top 10 bestselling Grand Theft Auto games sold a combined 110.82 million units. The top three titles sold more than 20 million units and the top five titles sold more than 10 million units. The top six titles sold more than five million units, the top eight titles sold more than three million units and all the games in the top 10 broke the two million mark.

Take-Two has published all the games in franchise, while Rockstar has been the main developer for the franchise.

The top 10 bestselling Grand Theft Auto games as a graph really shows how the franchise has only gotten more popular with each main release, other than Grand Theft Auto IV. Grand Theft Auto 2 outsold the original by 25 percent, while Grand Theft Auto III outsold the first two titles in the franchise combined and multiplied by three. Vice City outsold Grand Theft Auto III by 3.06 million units or 15 percent, while San Andreas out sold Vice City by 3.23 million units or 14 percent.

The majority of the sales for Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas came from the PlayStation 2. However, Grand Theft Auto IV sales were pretty even between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360 version sold 10.25 million units, while the PlayStation 3 version sold 9.71 million units. It is also the second bestselling Grand Theft Auto game of all time with combined sales of 20.69 million units. It only recently passed Vice City.

Of the top 10 titles, all 10 were released on a Sony platform, whether it is the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, or PSP. Five of the games were released on a Microsoft platform, whether it is the original Xbox or Xbox 360. Only two of the titles were released on a Nintendo platform, the Gameboy Advance and DS.

Note: The Rockstar Games Double Pack bundles counted towards both games. For example the Xbox double pack for Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City sold 2.49 million units, therefore 2.49 million units were added to each games total above.

Weekly Sales Analysis, 11 May - Lifetime PS3 Sales Right Behind X360

Overview

There were adjustments to the sales figures this week. Most notable were the increases in the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Vita hardware sales. The PlayStation 3 is now just 50,000 units behind the Xbox 360 and will become the second bestselling home console of the 7th generation in the next couple of weeks. The PlayStation Vita was adjusted above 5 million units.

Overall hardware sales decreased by 13 percent week-on-week. Week-on-week sales are down across the board. Overall year-on-year sales are down four percent. Also the 3DS is the only platform to be up year-on-year. However, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are only slightly down. The DS has dropped by 50 percent year-on-year, the biggest by percent.

No games debuted in the top 30 this week.

There are no software milestones this week in the top 30.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware home console sales week-on-week are down across the board. PlayStation 3 sales are down 12,240 (-9%) to 127,649 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are down 1,991 (-2%) to 92,388 units sold. The Wii sold 30,249 units, a decrease of 1,228 (-4%). The Wii U sold 26,864 units, a decrease of 5,547 (-17%).

Handheld sales week-on-week has dropped across the board. The 3DS sold 138,079 units, which is down 29,753 (-18%) week-on-week. The PSP is down 5,576 (-10%) to 50,273 units sold. The Vita sold 31,794 units which is down 17,690 (-36%) compared to last week. The DS is down 30 (0%) to 16,641 units sold. Total week on week sales are down 74,055 units (-13%) to 513,937 units sold.

The 3DS is the only platform up year-on-year. The PlayStation 3 is down 855 (-1%), the Wii is down 27,746 (-48%), and the Xbox 360 is down 6,206 (-6%). The PSP is down 8,573 (-15%), the DS is down 16,330 (-50%), the Vita is down 9,395 (-23%) and the 3DS is up 19,750 (17%). Year on year sales are down 22,491 units (-4%).

Home console hardware sales for the Xbox 360 for three weeks, the PlayStation 3 for six weeks, the Wii for two weeks, and the Wii U for one week. The PlayStation 3 has led for the last 20 weeks. Wii and Wii U sales have been nearly identical for the last five weeks.

The PlayStation 3 has a 51 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 37 percent market share; and the Wii has a 12 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all for home consoles are down.

Handheld hardware sales have decreased for one week for the 3DS and Vita, two weeks for the PSP and six weeks for the DS. The gap between the 3DS and Vita has decreased this week to 107,000 units this week, down from 118,000 units last week.

The PSP has a 75 percent market share this week for the seventh generation handhelds, while the DS has a 25 percent market share. The 3DS has an 81 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 19 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all four handhelds are down.

Worldwide Software

No games debuted in the top 30 this week.

Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts: Tomodachi Collection: Shin Seikatsu (3DS) is at the top of the charts with sales of 103,410. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS) is at number two with sales of 95,590. LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins (3DS) is at number three with sales of 61,775. Dead Island: Riptide (X360) is at number four with sales of 50,505. Injustice: Gods Among Us (X360) is at number five with sales of 37,791.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II (PS3) is at number six with sales of 36,128. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (X360) is at number seven with sales of 34,783. New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) is at number eight with sales of 31,852. Dragon’s Dogma (PS3) is at number nine with sales of 29,146. Dead Island: Riptide (PS3) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 28,181.

Software home console sales week-on-week are down across the board. The PlayStation 3 sold the most games this week with sales of 962m291, a decrease of 183,610 units (-16%). The Xbox 360 sold 994,918 games this week, a decrease of 119,540 units (-12%). Wii software sales are down 42,589 units (-8%) to 460,707 games sold. The Wii U sold 95,004 games, a decrease of 17,882 (-16%).

Handheld software sales week-on-week are down across the board. The 3DS sold 576,868 games, which is down 248,860 units (30%). The DS sold 303,614 games, a decrease of 34,769 units (-10%) week-on-week. The PSP sold 100,225 games, a decrease of 31,277 (-24%). Vita game sales are down 61,309 units (-39%) to 95,568 games sold. Total combined software is down 739,836 games units (-18%) week-on-week to 3.48 million.

Year on year software totals are up for the 3DS and Vita, and down for everything else. The PlayStation 3 is down 372,253 units (-28%), the Wii is down 353,900 units (-43%) and the Xbox 360 is down 312,482 units (-26%). The DS is down 120,002 units (-28%), the PSP is down 73,903 units (-42%), the 3DS is up 302,836 units (111%), and the Vita is up 9,142 units (11%). Total combined software is down 825,558 units (-19%) games sold year on year.

Home console software sales have decreased for one week for all four home consoles. Software sales between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 remain within 200,000 of each other for the second straight week.

The PlayStation 3 has a 42 percent market share, the Xbox 360 has a 38 percent market share, and the Wii has a 20 percent market share. Compared to ten weeks ago the Wii U is up, while the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii are down.

The 3DS sold the most software for a handheld for the 21st straight week. The 3DS and DS have remained above their rivals, the Vita and PSP respectively. The 3DS sold more than six times as many games as the Vita. The DS sold more than three times as many games as the PSP.

The DS has a 75 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 25 percent market share. The 3DS has an 86 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 14 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS is up, while the DS, Vita and PSP are down.
