ESHCC and Erasmus Studio start minor: Let’s go digital!

Finding your way in web content is a vital 21st century skill for students. In September 2013, ESHCC and Erasmus Studio will start the minor: Let's go digital! It will introduce students into how online information is organized and demonstrates the role of use of digital tools. Digital and online media have an enormous impact on how we search and use information. With a simple laptop, we can access huge amounts of online data and process, interpret and present it in new ways. Examples are the N-gram viewer – a tool that visualizes the occurrence of a word in 5 million books over 500 years – and enhanced publications - digital texts with links to video/audio-clips or to underlying data. This minor deals with the theory and practice of this revolution, teaches handling digital data (text, image, audio and video) and using digital tools. Digi-dummies are welcome.Course objectives:After completion of this minor the students:1. will have an understanding of the origins of digital scholarship, of the digital skills that are needed in the various phases of the research process, and are able to explain and use key-concepts.2. will know how to use a number of tools to handle digital data, and will understand their potential and limitations.3. will understand the characteristics of visual culture and will be able to search, process, and present sources from audio-visual archives. Martijn Kleppe receives grant for scientific photography project

Martijn Kleppe, a member of the Erasmus Studio, received a grant of €25.000 from SNS Reaalfonds. Martijn is a researcher at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication and this grant was given to support his project on historical icon photos.

Staging the Studio – forthcoming publication

One of the final fruits of our labor will be published next year: A contribution to ”Hiding Making, Showing Creation. The Studio from Turner to Tacita Dean.” In: Esner, Kisters & Lehmann (eds.), Amsterdam University Press. The chapter is called Staging the Studio: Enacting Artful Realities through Digital Photography and focuses on some of the complex relationships between artistic creation and forms of photographic documentation and (web-based) display. It does so through the lens of fieldwork done at the Rijksakademie for the visual arts in Amsterdam in 2009-10.

The book Virtual Knowledge: Experimenting in the Humanities and Social Sciences has recently been published by MIT Press. The book, which consists of a series of essays on the topic of e-research, social sciences, and humanities, is edited by Paul Wouters, Andrea Scharnhorst (both close affiliates of the Erasmus Studio), Anne Beaulieu, and Sally Wyatt.

To mark the completion of the video-life stories project Croatian Memories (CroMe), the Erasmus Studio for e-research will hold an international multidisciplinary conference "Digital Testimonies on War and Trauma" at the Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, 12-14 June 2013.
