Today, it's back to Europe with a big thank you Ben for this fabulous insights about Germany and it's festivals. Can't wait to visit one of them ;)

You shouldn’t need any special reason to visit Germany. There are amazing city breaks that you could try, plus the beautiful forests, lakes and mountains for the more leisurely walking and cycling holidays. However, Germany does have a wealth of festivals. They happen throughout the year, and some are well worth checking out. They cover everything from cultural diversity to celebrations of beer and wine, so there is always something to match anyone's interests.

With a population of three and a half million, Berlin is Germany’s largest city, and with half a million of those coming from different parts of the world, it is also very diverse culturally. A celebration of this fact happens every May with the ‘Carnival Of Cultures’ taking place in the Kreuzberg district of the city. Expect colourful sounds and tastes from around the world during this four-day festival, which culminates in a spectacular parade featuring thousands of performers and scores of floats making their way through the city, bringing a Brazilian party atmosphere to the streets of Berlin.

Throughout the months of May and September, the country’s longest river - the Rhine- is lit up spectacularly on some weekends. Passing through the cities of Bonn and Koblenz amongst others, the river and its surroundings are the scene for firework displays during the ‘Rhein In Flammen’ festival. Marvel at the awesome sights and sounds as specially lit boats make their way down this majestic river, lighting up the bankside and especially the faces of those watching this amazing spectacle.

One of Germany’s – if not the world’s – most famous festivals is the ‘Oktoberfest’, where as many as six million people descend upon Munich to take part in a medley of drink, food and song. Despite its name, the Oktoberfest usually begins in September (mainly due to the fact that the weather is better!) and has been increasing in popularity ever since the first festival back in 1810. This means that if you are planning a visit, then you may need to sort out a hotel well in advance, as well as reserving a table in one of the many beer tents – especially if you are bringing a large group. You may also want to stock up on your Euros, as you won’t get a lot of change out of a 10 Euro note for a litre of beer.

If you are planning a winter trip, then maybe one of Germany’s excellent Christmas Markets are for you. There are many different markets in many of the major cities in Germany, with Berlin boasting over sixty different ones the most famous and spectacular being that at the Gendarmenmarkt. With many more to choose from in Dresden, Nuremberg and Cologne to name but a few, you will be sure to experience all the Christmas cheer you need in the form of food, arts and crafts and of course some winter warmers in the form of beer and wine!

This is just the tip of the iceberg and there are many more special events held across Germany throughout the year. Keep your eyes peeled for these and many more festivals happening this year and beyond.

What to See on a West End Theatre Break

Again with Nick, this time in the British capital for a quick review on three of the top plays available in London's theatres. A really good help if you're are to decide what are you going to see there ;)

There are so many great shows to choose from in London’s West End that you’ll be spoil for choice when planning a theatre break. Know your audience and think about the members of your group, and a clear winner is likely to come shining through.

Legally Blonde the Musical - Great for a group of girly girls, this fun, frothy musical is dripping in pink. There’s singing, dancing, jokes and even a cute little pooch for the a wwww factor – what more could a girl want? Find group accommodation nearby and seek out the best cocktail bars in Soho and you’ve got all the ingredients you need for the perfect girl’s weekend away.

Ghost the Musical - If you’re travelling with a group of couples then something romantic like Ghost the Musical is likely to go down well. Based on the classic film, this new show is sure to have everyone gooey eyed by the end of it.

Shrek the Musical - Those planning to treat the kids to some theatre will find themselves spoilt for choice when looking for fantastic family friendly shows. Shrek the Musical is popular with both boys and girls, and the kids are likely to be familiar with the story of the loveable ogre and princess Fiona. Little girls will also appreciate the chance to see Kimberly from Girls Aloud in the starring role.

If Shrek isn’t quite there I think you also have the sweet story of Matilda, The Wizard of Oz or the fantastic alternative that is Wicked, and classics like The Lion King to choose from. The only thing that may not be quite so family friendly about a West End theatre break is the cost of tickets, so save on your accommodation with Travelodge to bring the overall cost of the break down.

Funny the topic of this guest post Nick :) I've been in London recently and opted to see the "Mamma Mia" play and liked it very much! Would add it to the good choices for couples, it's both romantic and very happy.

Attractions in Antalya, Turkey

Remaining in Turkey, this time with Katie's insights about Antalya, a coastal city that much like Oludeniz and Marmaris is nothing less than yet another fantastic beach spot on the Turkish Riviera. Another town where the mixture between beautiful beaches, old history, and a fine architecture works to perfection!

The modern city of Antalya is one of Turkey’s busiest. But away from the hustle and bustle there is a lot for the tourist to see and do for those who vacation in Antalya. To begin with, you can head to the old town, a small historic section called Kaleiçi. This used to be the original Roman town but was later an important centre in the Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods. It contains many old and historic buildings, many of them now protected from the bulldozers.

Kaleici is full of smart but inexpensive boutique hotels and restaurants. Kaleici is surrounded by an old Roman harbour, once the heart of the city and where crops from the Taurus mountains were shipped off to the rest of the world.

Another attraction that’s well worth a visit is the ancient amphitheater at Aspendos, regarded as the best-preserved theater of antiquity. The theatre was built by the Greek architect Zenon in 155 AD and has a diameter of 96 meters and can sit 7,000. The theatre was used for concerts until recently, but has been damaged by noise and is currently not staging events. However, a new, modern version has been constructed nearby to continue its traditions.

The other sight worth seeing during your trip to Antalya is Tunek Tepe hill, on the west side of the city. The hill is 618 meters high and has spectacular views of the Gulf of Antalya and the surrounding countryside and mountains. It also has a hotel, a night club and famous rotating restaurant.

Bodrum and Halicarnassus, two more jewels on the Turkish Riviera

Another message from David, another article from Turkey :) David has been traveling along the Turkish Riviera, and in his latest message he told me he was near Bodrum on his way to see the ruins of Halicarnassus. This ancient Greek city, conquered by Alexander the Great around 334 BC, was previously part of the Persian Empire and home of the famous Mausoleum of Halicarnassus - one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Located on the East side of the Turkish Riviera Bodrum is a city that, much like Oludeniz, one can use as starting point for a visit to this area. All one needs to do is try to find cheap flights to Bodrum and then rent a car there. In terms of distance to the other beach spots we've been talking about in this last posts, Marmaris is about 140 kilometers away and from there to Oludeniz you can count with another 140 kms, according to Google Maps each travel should take you 3 hours give or take.

Besides the Mausoleum ruins Bodrum has several other architectural landmarks worthy of visit, one example of that is the huge Theatre of Halicarnassus you can see in the photo above. From another era the amazing Castle of St. Peter, nowadays converted into a museum, is also a must visit. The cannons of this medieval fortress, strategically positioned near the harbor, successfully defended the city from it's enemies several times.

For those into water activities a visit to the modern marina of Bodrum can be worthy, David mentioned that there are several sea excursions available from there. One final thanks to Wikimedia Commons for the fabulous photos and allow me to go ad one more destiny to my travel wish-list ;)

Portugal, Winter or Summer always an excelent choice

With the European debt crisis insisting on opening almost all TV news reports I found myself wondering about how to make some savings in my next vacations... And how about paying a visit to my home country? Residing in Europe, flying to Portugal isn't too expensive and the prices of hotels and restaurants there are rather competitive. When it comes to cheap holiday my beloved country is in fact a player and, although it is best know for it's warm climate and for the beautiful beaches of Algarve, Portugal has much more to offer ;)

Today I'll take you to the center of the country, more precisely to the Ribatejo region. The capital of this region is the city of Santarém, conquered to the Moorish in March of 1147 by the army of Portugal's first king: D. Afonso Henriques. The elevated position of Santarém's castle was back then of crucial importance in order to ensure the defense of the fertile plains near the Tagus river. High on the top of the hills the old Moorish castle has some beautiful gardens one can visit and it's still nowadays the spot with the best view in town.

With many Gothic references in it's architecture the historical center of Santarém is a fantastic place. Since it's not that big in area it's easy to visit on foot. From the Market to the Churches, from the Monasteries to the Parks and Plazas it's always a pleasure to walk around in the city's narrow streets (see photo above). Do remember to stop by the Bijou cafe and ask for box of Celestes, the typical cakes of Santarém made with a sweet egg cream - in one word, delicious! :)

Not very far from Santarém, I would say no further then 50 kilometers away, another unique Portuguese castle called Almourol. Like the castle of Santarém, the Almourol was also an important piece of the Tagus defense line. The location chosen for this fortress is what makes it one of a kind, as you can see above it was built on a small little island right in the middle of the river. One advice though, make sure to go there during the day so you can catch the small boat to visit the island - it's worth it!

Oludeniz, another fabulous beach in Turkey

After receiving David's message telling how much he's loving his stay at Oludeniz I've made some online research and I'm much inclined to ad yet another Turkish beach to my wish list. This small beach town in the Fethiye district offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful beach surrounded by an amazing set of mountains. Also since Dalaman's airport isn't too far, about 60 kilometers, flying to Dalaman and rent a car there is most definitely a viable option.

Besides the obvious beautiful beach scenario the climate also favors Oludeniz as a Summer Vacation destination. With average temperatures between 25° and 35° Celsius from May to October one may say they have a six month Summer there! For those of you who like a bit of adventure there are also good news: the mountains surrounding the beach are said to be a cool spot for para-sailing. Judging from the photo bellow it must be an awesome experience :)

I'm still dazzled by the flying photo above... Speaking of flying, doing it directly to Dalaman's airport can lower the travel budget, who knows allowing one to combine stays in both Oludeniz and Marmaris. These two cities are both good beach destinations and they're apart no further than a two hour drive (140 kilometers, give or take). As to where to stay in Oludeniz - hotel or apartment? - I guess I'm gonna wait for David's input.

Holiday destinations in Europe

With a huge thanks to Kyla and Susan lets make a little tour around the North and Center Europe. From Iceland to Montenegro, passing through Norway, Sweden and Romania, several proposals for a bit more adventurous holidays.

Europe offers a wealth of holiday destinations with everything from cities and beaches to cultural and culinary delights. You don't need to settle for noisy beaches and teeming cities. There are lots of enchanting places for holidays and adventure away from the crowds.

Iceland - a perfect destination for family adventure holidays. See the Midnight Sun in summer and the Northern Lights in spring and autumn. Climb a glacier or snorkel in clear blue water all on the same day. Iceland caters for all ages and all fitness abilities. Go hiking over grassy plains and lava-strewn meadows, or swim in a naturally heated pool. Even small villages boast swimming pools warmed by Iceland's volcanic heat. The countryside here is a dream for horse riders. Small, sturdy Icelandic horses are perfect for beginners and children and they can pick up a fast gallop for confident adults.

Varmland and Dalarna - travel a little further south to the borders of Sweden and Norway. The forests, farmland and lakes of Varmland are the most beautiful parts of Sweden. You can hike through the forests and kayak along the rivers. Get the whole family pedaling a special trolley that rides along the Klaralvs Banan, a disused railway track with stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Hikers and older children with a reasonable level of fitness will enjoy the Dalarna Mountains, lakes and valleys just to the north of Varmland. Dalarna means "The Dales" in Swedish. It's where Swedes love to celebrate the midsummer holiday in June. The region is also a haven for skiing enthusiasts. The Vasaloppet, a 90-kilometre cross-country ski marathon takes place here in March between two villages. Add some culture to your adventure holidays when you reach Mora and visit the museum dedicated to Anders Zorn, one of Sweden's most famous painters.

Transylvania - there's more to Transylvania, part of south and central Romania today, than Dracula's Castle. This part of the Carpathian Mountains has been ruled over through the centuries by Romans, Hungarians, Bulgarians and Ottomans. Saxon merchants founded the region's seven major historical cities and Brasov is one of these cities. Dracula's Castle is close by and history and suspense are part of the adventure here.

There are leisurely walking tours for children and mountain trekking and rock climbing for fitter adults. Local guides will take you through the ancient forest where wolves, bears and lynx can be seen. Follow the minor roads down the mountains through old Turkish, Tatar, Ukrainian and Romanian villages to the delta of the River Danube. May is the best time of year to see traditional festivals in the villages and the bird settlements around the Danube delta's floating islands.

Montenegro - drive down the coast road from the popular Croatian resort of Dubrovnik and head for Montenegro. The Bay of Kotor, the largest fjord in Europe and which is surrounded by the Orjen Mountains, lies just beyond the tiny coastal strip of Bosnia. Montenegro (its name means "Black Mountain") is a perfect choice for family holidays, as long as all members have a head for heights. This is a country of dizzying mountains and pristine ancient forests.

Visit the Tara River Canyon in the middle of the Durmitor Mountains. This is the world's biggest canyon after the United States' Grand Canyon. Water in the river comes from numerous mountain springs and pummels through the canyon in over 40 cascades. Europe's adventurous destinations are only a maximum of four hours flying time away. Enjoy the thrills without the jet lag.

Santiago de Cuba, a must go in the South of Cuba

Hi everyone! And today, a special hi to Darla whose email I'll be answering in this article. Darla is on her way to Guardalavaca, a beautiful beach on the South of Cuba, and asked me if she and her friends should make a visit to Santiago de Cuba?

The answer is Yes! Staying in the South of the island more than should you must save a day for Santiago. It's only about 2 hours away and you'll get the chance to know the 2nd largest city of Cuba. Although the age of the city can be seen a bit to much in it's old buildings, Santiago is still a beautiful and inspiring town with many things to offer to it's visitors.

To get a first feel of Santiago I would suggest a visit to the Céspedes Park. In this small yet important plaza of the city you'll find, side by side with the park, both the Cathedral of Santiago and the Municipality Building. Above, a photo taken from the terraces of the Hotel Casagranda (located in one of the corners of the park) towards the Municipality Building with the city in background.

Another plaza that is worthy of a visit when in Santiago de Cuba is the Plaza Antonio Maceo Grajales. The huge Equestrian Statue that lies on this plaza honoring the General's deeds in the fight for Cuban Independence (photo above) is simply unbelievable - yes, those small things to the left and right are trees, cars and people...

As I've said, also located in the Céspedes Park is the beautiful Cathedral of Santiago you can see in the photo above. Devoted to Our Lady of the Assumption, this Cathedral was the first one on the island and it was built around 1528 in a time where Santiago was the Spanish capital of the island. Without doubt, a must see in Santiago.

One other place to go is the Cemetery of Sta Ifigenia, place where among others lies the Cuban Independence Hero José Marti and also the Rum industrial Emilio Bacardí. Remember to stay for the Changing the Guard Ceremony (ask locally for the schedule so you don't have to wait for too long).

One final note for the cute Guaguas, the characteristic local "buses" that assure public transportation in Santiago de Cuba and the usual thanks to Open Galleries for the marvelous Santiago de Cuba pictures!

Great family holiday activities to do in Canberra

Once again with us Marcela, this time with a complete review over the Australian capital, the beautiful Canberra. Lots of places to visit and with many cool things to do, just perfect for family holidays :)

Visiting Australia's capital is a great idea for a fun family holiday. There is so much to see and do, the kids will love it. Once you've booked your accommodation, you may want to plan out some of the things you'll want to check out before you go. Here listed are a few you won't want to miss.

The Parliament House - This is a great way to spend a few hours while visiting Canberra. Once again this is a great way to show your kids how big decisions are made in our country. You may even get the chance to watch the Parliamentarians in a session and view from the galleries.

Visit the AIS - The AIS is a great activity for the whole family. You can see where our sporting champions live and train, and get a great behind-the-scenes view of the AIS and find out what it really takes to be an elite athlete. You may even catch a glimpse of one of our top swimmers gymnasts in training while taking the 90 minute tour.

The National Gallery of Australia - The National Gallery is definitely worth a visit whether you are an art lover or not. Being the National Gallery of the entire country means that this gallery has exhibitions from across the country and the world, which may interest even the most uninterested person in art. Many people make the trip to Canberra from all over the country each year just to view the exhibitions that will be shown nowhere else in the country.

The Questacon - Questacon is the National Science and Technology Centre. It has a number of great interactive exhibits on at any one time, making the whole experience fun and interactive for kids. Bellow one of the most popular experiments, the Lightning simulator.

The Mint - The Mint is a fascinating place for both kids and adults. It has a range of interesting exhibitions running and offers kids a chance to learn about the process of how money is created and how it circulates. The Royal Australian Mint is the sole supplier of Australia's circulated coinage.

Cockington Green - This is a great place to take the kids. It has miniature displays of monuments and world famous land marks such as Stonehenge. There is a lovely peaceful Heritage Rose Walk with beautiful gardens, and heaps of play areas for the children. Take the kids on the stream train ride then relax with a picnic in the gardens. A great way to spend a day with the family.

Canberra really does have some wonderful places to visit that the whole family can enjoy. Being the nation's capital, it truly is a fascinating place with loads to see and do, some activities just a short stroll from the cities major hotels and apartments.

Beaches - If you are a person who enjoys the water and the beautiful view of crystal blue, clear water, then the beaches in the Philippines is a place you will love! There is nothing like sitting on the powdery white sand and looking down what seems like never ending coastlines. In fact, the Philippines is known for having almost the greatest distance of coastline in the whole continent of Asia.

Relaxation - The Philippines is known for its many masseuse parlors. The native method of “Hilot” is known to relax the muscles of a person. These masseuse parlors enable the person to relax and doze off while experiencing one of the best massages they have ever received.

Turkey Holidays - Getting more popular every year, Marmaris and Altinkum!‏

Once again in Turkey, this time thanks to Chris who sent this guest post telling us all about the beautiful beach town of Marmaris. Can't wait to go there and try it for myself. Looks absolutely amazing ;)

For years Turkey has been a prime destination for holidaymakers from all over the globe and with it's fine selection of districts, towns and resorts as well as heavy investment in the holiday industry, Turkey is climbing up towards being the number one holiday destination for everyone who enjoys a year round gorgeous climate, white sandy beaches and turquoise waters, (with a whole load of extras on the side as well!).

One of the most popular resorts in Turkey (if not the most popular) is the city of Marmaris, which is located on the southwestern Mediterranean coast. The city is mainly very popular due to the high number of bars and clubs in the area, where the hardcore partygoer can party all night throughout a number of different establishments. There is also some great beach bars, cafes and of course many fantastic restaurants offering a fine selection of traditional Turkish cuisine as well as international dishes, so you won't be at a loss of what to eat.

The beaches are of course very beautiful and popular, but make sure you get down there early especially in the summer time, as getting a prime spot on the sand can sometimes be a little tricky! Either way you will still be able to experience the full potential of both main beaches in Marmaris.

As for activities, there is plenty to see and do in Marmaris, including the Dalyan Mud baths, two substantial water parks and for the site seeing enthusiast, The King Tombs, which can only be viewed by boat are incredibly over 3000 years old!

Another great resort to choose for your holiday in Turkey is Altinkum! Just 123 kilometers from the town of Aydin the resort is getting more popular with each year that passes, however it is quite a bit more laid back that the city of Marmaris, meaning you can enjoy the resort in the summer months without having to deal with the substantial club scene and partygoers that favor Marmaris as their number one spot. Altinkum also boasts better beaches that Marmaris and with bigger and better beaches comes more space for you to keep to yourself and truly relax in!

Nightlife is still available in Altinkum, however it is far more chilled out than the more popular resorts, meaning you can enjoy a quiet walk around town at any time of the evening.

The London Olympics

This is going to be the big event in the UK's capital city this year and excitement is growing across the nation as preparations for the ultimate sporting occasion take place. You'll need to be fast to snap up the remaining tickets and there will also be large screens around the stadiums for fans to soak up the sporting atmosphere.

Book early for good quality accommodation, as the best is likely to go very fast. Do the same with train tickets and other advance bookings. You could make a week of it and also see the capital's myriad attractions while you’re there, for a genuine trip to remember.

The Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are on many a would-be traveler's wish list and are one of the most spectacular natural spectacles on the planet. There are different places to see the lights, such as Norway, Lapland, Iceland and even the northernmost parts of Scotland at certain times of the year. You can see the lights on land or on cold-water cruises, which are becoming extremely popular.

Marlborough Wine Festival

Pamplona Bull Running

This is one of the ultimate Spanish festivals for those who love adrenaline and have no issue with bull fighting! The bull running begins at midday on the 6th July each year.

Thousands of visitors gather in the square to run with the bulls, celebrate with vast quantities of sangria and generally have a good time. Join in at your peril - tourists do invariably get hurt every year for failing to follow safety precautions and keep out of the way of the bulls!

Santa Maria, the yellow island of the Azores Archipelago

Back to the Azores series lets fly over almost half of the North Atlantic ocean and read what Nuno has to say about another one of the islands of the Archipelago. Flaps on, landing gear down, it's time to land at Santa Maria :)

Also known as the yellow island Santa Maria is one of the smallest islands and belongs to the eastern group, being the most southern island of the two.

Santa Maria is synonym of beaches and dream landscapes. Cut by deep bays, it has the better beaches in the Azores archipelago and also a good climate with many hours of sun. For those who like sportive holidays the waves are good for surfers, sport sea fishing, windsurf and even scuba diving.

For those who like calm holidays, the suggestion goes to take refreshing and energizing walks through Santa Maria's countryside. Must sees are the island greenly hills and plains without vegetation, the rural sights and countryside life and of course the São Lourenço bay, with it's natural and beautiful big shell form.

Other settlements worthy of a visit are Vila do Porto, Santo Espírito, Anjos and São Pedro. This wonderful route with it's old churches, monasteries and fortresses will for sure be keept in memory for long time.

For those who appreciate food enjoy the fresh fish, the delicious mollusks (lapas and cracas), and the traditional desserts. Although Santa Maria is a small island it has several well kept and delicious secrets...

One final note to where to stay? Since it's very close, if you consider visiting São Miguel too, you can always opt to base your trip at Ponta Delgada. It's a bigger island with more to see and the city is beautiful. Available are several cool hotels in the center like the Azores Atlantico or, for those of you who like historical places, the Camoes Hotel. From Ponta Delgada it's then possible to travel to Santa Maria by plane or boat, for both options same comment - small but beautiful trips ;)

Krakow - A mandatory stop when visiting Poland

Today lets thanks Chris for taking us all the way back to Europe! For the first time our Vacation and Travel Photos is going to Poland, more precisely to it's second largest city, the beautiful Krakow.

Of the many thousands of prospective holidaymakers across the world who are considering booking a short city break this summer, it is a fairly safe bet to say that in the minds of the vast majority of such people, Poland will not be at the top of their list of countries to visit - but why on earth should this be the case when the country has so much to offer?

When it comes to holiday destinations in Europe, Poland can provide an enriching holiday experience for tourists of all ages - and at a fraction of the cost of other better known holiday locations on the continent that may be crammed with tourists during the summer months and therefore inhibit visitor enjoyment.

When it comes to holidays in Poland, there is surely no better place to visit than the city of Krakow. Located in the south central region of the country, Krakow and the surrounding area offers a great deal of exciting things to see and do for both backpackers and holidaymakers alike - particularly during the summer months where climatic conditions are frequently warm and very pleasant for visitors to enjoy (perhaps contrary to many people's stereotypical perception of Poland and its weather).

The city of Krakow and the surrounding area hold great historical significance for the country of Poland and indeed for the rest of Europe to a certain degree, and as such as you may expect this means there are many key historical buildings and museums in and around the city that give a fascinating yet often thought provoking insight into the history of Krakow and of the people of Poland.

There are however other more family friendly attractions in the city such as the Wawel Castle, St Mary’s Basilica and the market square which make for fantastic viewing.

For younger visitors to Krakow who like to party to the early hours you will be glad to know that there are fewer better places in Central and Eastern Europe to enjoy great nightlife than Krakow. With dozens of great bars and clubs in and around the market square all offering local beers and vodkas at extremely cheap prices you are sure to have a great time. If you want to eat out in Krakow you MUST visit the award winning Pod Aniolami near to the castle which is second to none when it comes to enjoying huge portions of grilled Polish meats, sausages as well as other Bavarian specialties at ridiculously low prices.

Holidays in 2012 – where to visit throughout the year

Deciding where to go on holiday can be tricky. You’ll often have a month in mind for when you’d like to go away but choosing your holiday destination isn’t always easy. If you’re currently thinking about booking a last minute holiday, January is the ideal time of the year to visit the Caribbean. There is also the chance to visit the Everglades National Park, which as the subtropical wilderness of the USA, is home to a variety of species. There is also the Biscayne National park that offers the chance to dive around its coral reefs.

Visiting Dubai in October gives the chance for you to experience this truly unique city. Not only does it have many record-breaking landmarks and achievements, it also has many miles of beaches that are ideal for water sports. The city also offers traditional activities, such as camel racing and falconry.

November is an ideal time to take a trip halfway around the world to New Zealand. Both North Island and South Island have beautiful landscapes that include plenty of beaches, lots of wildlife, outdoor activities and the opportunity to experience the unique Maori culture. There is still plenty of sun at this time of year and it is an ideal time to explore.

Cancun in Mexico offers dry weather in December, with average temperatures of around 24 degrees. There are plenty of water sports on offer, including diving. As well as its many beaches, there is plenty to see and do. It has bustling towns and gives visitors the opportunity to explore the ancient world of the Mayans.

Whatever time of year you plan to go on holiday this year, this top picks are just a few destinations that will help you to follow the sun throughout the year.

Goa, dream vacations in India

Continuing with my travel wishlist lets fly from Istambul to Goa, a small province on the Eastern coast of India. Goa was the first place visited by the Portuguese explorers in India and it was from there that they started the sea trading routes to Europe. In fact, although Goa's state capital is a city called Panaji, the largest city in the province has the name of the famous Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama.

The Portuguese influence is most visible in the architecture, specially in the many Churches, Monasteries and Cathedrals. These structures that are present throughout the cities of Goa state and have inclusively helped the province to gain an UNESCO world heritage architecture award. Above the beautiful Santa Catarina Cathedral in the city of Velha Goa (Old Goa in English).

Also beautiful and part of Goa's world heritage architecture are the numerous Hindu Temples one can find in the region. A fine example of this temples, just a few miles from the capital Panaji in a village called Kavalem, is the amazing Shantadurga Temple (devoted to the Goddess with the same name).

As always in vacations beautiful beaches are not an optional and Goa is no exception in this mater. The climate is very warm all year so I'm hoping I can find some cheap holidays to Goa. From North to South of Goa's state there are several beach spots perfect for a refreshing dive and catching some sun rays. Without any doubt I would love to try the waters of Praia da Colva :)

Vila Nova de Milfontes, Portugal

In another joint venture with Andre, this next post is all about Vila Nova de Milfontes. A small village in the South of our country Portugal famous for it's beautiful beaches, it's history and it's gastronomy.

Vila Nova de Milfontes is perhaps the most touristic beach location in the Portuguese region of Alentejo. The view from the bridge over the Mira river invites who passes to make a stop and meet the place. The village offers to it's visitors a small and calm river beach, perfect for families with kids. Also several ocean beaches, from those the one called Praia do Malhão (just 5km from the center) is the most know. Located in Alentejo's Southwest Natural park this beach has extensive sandy areas and excellent conditions for water sports like surf.

With it's 525 year's of old, Vila Nova de Milfontes breathes history. Over the Mira river places like the town's fort, the Forte de São Clemente, built in the end of the XVI century to protect the village from piracy, are amazing. Even oldest, the church of Nossa Senhora da Graça (in English, Our Lady of Grace) whose construction date goes as far as the beginning of that same XVI century.

Those who like nature may explore many track paths along the coastal lines, in fact, some of them are among the best preserved in all Europe. Between Vila Nova de Milfontes and Porto Covo, there are several track spots of exquisite beauty. Amazing desert beaches and breath taking cliffs ending on the ocean.

As to the gastronomy, it's mandatory to taste the local fresh fish dishes and seafood. In the local restaurants it's always easy to find dishes like the Arroz de Marisco (seafood with rice and sauce). A word too for the Açorda de Marisco (the same seafood base but this time cooked with eggs, bread and herbs), very good if you ask me!

With and exception to the Summer month of August, it's usually very easy to find where to stay. I guess all options are available, from camping, to apartments and hotels, all you have to do is choose what's best for you and come visit us on your next Portugal holidays. See you soon ;)

Istanbul, Byzantium or Constantinople - dream vacations in Turkey

Today I'll be giving wings to my vacation and travel wishes so instead of a place I already know, I'll be writing about a place that I'm sure I would love to visit! As you may know, I'm much fond of Italy and Greece so, staying in Europe, I would definitively had to dream with the other country in the South Eastern side, Turkey. Much like Italy and Greece, the Republic of Turkey is another one of those countries that breaths history everywhere, in it's case the Ottoman Empire history.

Speaking of Turkish history is of course speaking of Istanbul. In it's earlier days a Greek city called Byzantium, later renamed to Constantinople and made capital of the Roman Eastern Empire. In 1453, after a long siege, the city was conquered by the Sultan Mehmed II and made again capital but this time of the Ottoman Empire. A very well known symbol of this last conquest (know in history books as the Fall of Constantinople) is the Hagia Sophia Mosque (photo above), a former Roman/Greek Orthodox Basilica that was converted to a Mosque in the very first day after the Ottoman victory.

Speaking of Mosques, what to say about the beauty of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (above) locally know as the Blue Mosque. It's in fact very hard to find words that accurately describe the uniqueness of the architecture of this structure. The numerous cupolas and domes accompanied by the six minarates seen from the Courtyard are absolutely amazing.

Another fine example of the Ottoman architecture is the Dolmabahçe Palace with it's Baroque decorated facade, beautiful. This palace is located on the margins of the Bosphorus, also know as the Istanbul Strait, the Strait that separates the city in two and that also serves as boundary between Europe and Asia.

As if Istambul's historical side wasn't enough to convince me, I must also say that the city streets appear to be filled of life and activity. Above, a view from the İstiklal Avenue in the historical center. For me a reminder of how much I liked the busy streets of Heraklion, the capital of the Greek island of Crete.

Most definitively I'm certain that as soon as I can I'll be making a vacation in Turkey. For now, Istanbul has for sure assured a higher place on my dream vacations wishlist!

Lanzarote, the Volcanic island in the Canary Archipelago

In a return to the Spanish Canary Islands series let me fly South over the Atlantic Ocean and take you all the way to the beautiful island of Lanzarote, the most oriental of this Spanish Archipelago and from the seven larger islands the one closer to Africa.

Maybe because of this African proximity Lanzarote has less rain and it's the island where the volcanic and desert landscapes are by far more evident. Nevertheless, the natural beauty of this kind of landscape is irrefutable. Coastal landscapes like the ones near the Papagayo beach area (above) are not only beautiful but also unique in the way they mixture the sandy beaches with the island's volcanic mountains of los Ajaches.

Also amazing are volcanic landscapes like the lava fields near the mountains called Montañas del Fuego. As to the beaches on the island I must say I have no doubt in choosing my favorite, bellow, the fabulous Papagayo beach. After a photo like this (thanks to wikimedia) I'm sure I need to say nothing more :)

Last but not the least, the economic beauty of the Canary Islands. Having a reduced tax regime the prices of the hotels are invitingly low. Better yet, since the weather is good almost all year, if you choose the low season it's gonna be fairly easy to find cheap holidays to Lanzarote. Florida - Perfect For a Holiday Vacation All Year Round

Back to the United States, this time to check out the beautiful Florida beaches. Thanks to Mike here we go!

Florida is perfect for a holiday vacation at any time of the year, no matter what age you are. It is known as the sunshine state, because that is exactly what you get even in the middle of winter. Temperatures are usually around the 60 to 70s even in November and December, so it has to be warmer than staying at home.

It is comfortable enough to lie on the beach or at the pool and sunbathe during the day. However, the sea water is likely to be much colder, so be warned if you decide to go swimming. Temperatures may drop to around the 40s in the evenings, but do not let that put you off because it is a good opportunity to snuggle up in front of a nice log fire for a romantic evening, or go for a stroll and view the fantastic sunsets.

It does not matter where you go in Florida you will find plenty of shops and many first class restaurants serving every type of cuisine you can think off. Whichever part of the state you choose to visit you will never be far away from some fantastic markets. At the all year round local events and festivals, you'll find the friendly inhabitants, are only too willing to welcome visitors to come along and join in with the activities.

You can have a wide selection of accommodation options to choose from. There will be something to fit any budget. Throughout the winter and autumn months, you can find some fantastic properties at really low prices, when demand falls. During spring and the summer months prices are much higher, and it is advisable to book well in advance if you want to have your choice of the best properties.

Florida vacation rentals can be found to accommodate from groups of two upwards. They are usually booked on a weekly rate, but can be rented for longer vacation periods, by arrangement with the rental company. If, for example, you are planning on a 4-6-week rental and using this as a base for exploring the state, you can try to negotiate a cheaper weekly rate.

A rental property can be much more cost effective per head than a hotel, depending on the size of the group. You will have privacy and all the facilities you may need to accommodate your group. You have the option to cook and eat in, whereas in hotels, which are usually room only you have to go out to eat.

Orlando is the perfect family holiday for the kids and the young at heart. If you like excitement and have plenty of energy, you will love visiting the theme parks and trying out all the rides from the tame to the really scary. There is no shortage of popular shows to go and see after, or before you enjoy a meal in one of the many restaurants.

If you prefer to spend a relaxing day at the beach watching the world pass by, Florida is the place to go. You will appreciate some of the best beaches, with opportunities for sunbathing, swimming and surfing. Florida is perfect for a holiday vacation and has something for everyone, including the fishermen and those who enjoy sailing and other water sports.

Lord Cochrane, Scotland

Let me start 2012 wishing you all a happy new year, filled with health and joy! After that how about something a little different from the usual travel related posts? Abhishek decided to share with us a bit of Scotland history, more precisely the story Lord Cochrane, a Scotland Naval Hero - not forgetting of course a suggestion on places to stay near Lord Cochrane's city, Culross :)

It is a little known fact that Scotland produced one of the great naval heroes of the nineteenth century. Lord Cochrane achieved hero status in a remarkable career that encompassed daring do’s for the Royal Navy, crusading on behalf of the under privileged as an MP then leading the nascent Chilean Navy in rebelling against the Spanish.

Cochrane’s early life contained much of the of the toughness that so often breeds radical genius. Born at the Dundonald at Annsfield near Hamilton in South Lanarkshire he then spent much of his early life at the family seat of Culross Fife. His father was a frustrated scientific inventor who through the necessity of limited finances having inherited the ancestral pile turned to inventing, partly as an escape partly as a hope making a fortune. His invention of coal tar was later used to seal the hulls of ships but symptomatic of the family relationship with the Royal Navy, they refused to use it until after the patent had lapsed.

Short of cash the young heir was sent to the sea. Here he found a calling and a skill. Unlike most young midshipmen Cochrane was taught of the life of the real Royal Navy through his early mentor Lieutenant Larmour. This gave him both an essential insight into the mind of the British sailor but also invaluable ability as a seaman. It was this grounding allied with a cunning rebellious streak that were to serve him so well through a glittering career.

It is when you read of his exploits as a captain that realise just how remarkable a figure he was. In fact read the works by CS Forester and Patrick O’Brian and is clear both Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey borrowed a great deal from Cochrane’s life. Cochrane’s appeal was his ability to achieve the apparently impossible. In fact very often – such as when he took the major Spanish base of Valdivia in Chile with its surrounding forts. It seemed such an impregnable fortress any attempt to take it was so unlikely to succeed by the time the Spanish knew what was happening Cochrane had already succeeded.

It was this ability to achieve the impossible that meant the Napoleonic French called Cochrane the wolf of the sea. He was never content with simple ship to ship action. Very often he looked to use land action and explosives to achieve his objectives. This could have seen him re-write the book on naval and coastal warfare but Cochrane’s dislike of tory high minded authority meant frequent clashes with the admiralty. This was added to by his years as much loved MP for Westminster where he regularly clashed with the administration. All this added to the Admiralty’s antipathy to Cochrane’s that eventually led to dismissal from the navy and his career abroad as an adventuring, if principled, admiral for hire.

In later life and with a change of administration at home led to his reinstatement and he died as Admiral of the Red; one of the most remarkable military characters of the 19th century.

Portugal and Spain seen from Space

How about that, my beloved hometown Lisbon seen from space!! It's all over the news here in Portugal - NASA's photo of the day is a beautiful snapshot of the Iberian Peninsula taken from the International Space Station last 4th of December.

Taken by night, the photo shows the fantastic light spectacle made by the cities all over the Peninsula. It's absolutely amazing how the lights can so clearly identify the land, allowing us to easily find several of the major cities of both Portugal and Spain.

Very easy to spot are the Portuguese capital Lisbon (bellow near the shoreline to the middle), the Spanish capital Madrid (far into the center of the Peninsula directly above Lisbon) the coastal city of Seville (to the right near the Gibraltar Straight).

Also being the 4th of December a Saturday night, I would guess that half of Lisbon's lights must be from "Bairro Alto". All the way from the Altis Hotel to the streets near Bairro Alto Hotel the city is filled with people enjoying the nightlife. The discos and the many, many bars open till late hours always fill the city streets with people, music and light :)

Now more seriously, let me leave here a huge thanks to NASA for taking and sharing wonderful pictures like this one. Loved to see how my country looks from up there!

When it comes to sportsmen and women, golfers must be up there with the most fortunate sports people. Not only are they lucky enough to play the sport they love day in and day out, competing for vast fortunes watched by huge numbers of people; they also get to travel around the world and see some amazing countries and places. You may think that the spectacular sights are to be found away from the course but there are certain courses around the world that are beautiful sights in their own right. Below, TravelSupermarket looks at 10 of the most beautiful golf courses around the world:

St Andrew’s, Scotland - Scotland is the home of golf and the courses at St Andrew's on the Fife coast are a place where almost anyone who has ever swung a club wants to play at some stage in their life. Golf has been played here since the 15th Century and the real challenge is coping with the demands the coastal location places on a player, amidst the sand dunes and wind of Scotland's beautifully rugged east coast.

Muirfield, Scotland - Another great venue in Scotland is Muirfield, located in Gullane, East Lothian, just a decent approach shot away from Edinburgh. The storied greens here are viewed as particularly testing and are where Jack Nicklaus won his first British Open. There are usually two visitor days a week and tee availability should be checked with the course itself; a round usually costs around £200, depending on local factors.

Celtic Manor, Wales - Wales is home to some of the UK's most stunning vistas of mountain and ocean and the Celtic Manor resort in Gwent has emerged as a highly-rated golfing venue in recent years. Its courses include The Montgomerie, designed by legendary Scottish Ryder Cup star Colin Montgomerie, who captained Europe to victory in the Cup in 2010. The modern facilities here are superb, with a golf academy and a floodlit driving range amongst its attractions.

Royal County Down, Ireland - Moving away from Scotland and Wales and across the Irish Sea, Ireland's green hills and attractive coastlines are home to some special golfing locations. In Northern Ireland, the Royal County Down Golf Club is a very fine venue. Over a century old, this course enjoys a setting between the Irish Sea and the Mountains of Mourne and is some 30 miles south of Belfast and within 100 miles of Dublin. With wind from the sea as well as the heather and gorse bushes to deal with, this venue can challenge as well as stimulate the senses.

Ballybunion, Ireland - Also in Ireland, although right down in the south west, is the Ballybunion Golf Club. Again, the course makes the most of its setting on the Kerry coast, with its fairways and greens placed amongst the sand dunes which overlook the Atlantic Ocean. The course has a wild feel to it thanks to the native plants and the sea views give a real feeling of freedom.

Royal Melbourne, Australia - Away from Britain and Ireland, visitors to Australia can experience the superb facilities at the Royal Melbourne Golf club, in the south east of the country. There are two 18-hole courses at the site, an East and a West, with competition events being held on a composite course with 12 holes from the West and six from the East.

Mid Ocean, Bermuda - For golfers who are rich enough, the island of Bermuda has an exclusive venue known as The Mid Ocean Golf Club. With spectacular sea views and a course designed by Charles Blair Macdonald. It can often feel like golfers are actually playing in the middle of the ocean itself on this course's cleverly laid-out fairways. As well as hosting some major golf tournaments in recent years, the course was also the site of meetings between American President Eisenhower and British Prime Ministers in the 1950s.

Pebble Beach, USA - The United States itself is blessed with some the finest golf courses in the world, not the least of which is Pebble Beach in California, a five-time host venue of the US Open. The resort contains five different courses which present different challenges, with a Scottish-style links course sitting alongside the Pebble Beach Golf Links, in use since 1919 and the Spyglass Hill Course. An exclusive venue where it is unlikely to come across casual golfers, there is also the oldest course in continuous use west of the Mississippi, the Del Monte, which has seen over a century's service. Exclusivity means that playing here can be an expensive experience.

Pinehurst Country Club, USA - Over on the eastern seaboard of the US, the Pinehurst Country Club in North Carolina enjoys eight picturesque courses, with more holes on offer to the golfing visitor than any other course in the USA. The fairways are lined with trees and there are plenty of bunkers to break things up a little and it is also noteworthy as being the place where Payne Stewart won his last tournament before his tragic death in a plane crash in 1998.

Augusta, USA - Also in the southern states of the USA is the Augusta National Golf Club, the venue at which the Masters is held each year. One feature of the course which frequently attracts attention from gardeners as well as golfers is the amount of pink azaleas that decorate the championship 18-hole and nine-hole courses. The 11th, 12th and 13th holes are collectively known as 'Amen Corner', viewed as one of the sport's most challenging trios of holes.

Very few earn the right to wear the Green Blazer of a Masters champion, one of the most iconic titles in sport and the kind of gravitas associated with the jacket informs the ethos of the venue, known as a place of conservative decorum and respect for tradition. Golf is a sport that crosses geographical and cultural boundaries, allowing players who travel to soak up some of the world's most picturesque locations as well as taking part in one of the world's most widespread and enjoyable activities.
