The exhibition addresses the stereotypes that have shaped the bad reputation of the spider and assumes the characteristics of this efficient predator is an important link in the food chain.

Fighting stereotypes

Spiders are not monsters but hairy animals very surprising. Hated and feared, they are among the most misunderstood animals. The course of the exhibition is designed as a progressive discovery to get to know, without omitting the imaginary part of the reason, real or mythical, of the fear they inspire. Areas, defined by the set design, deal with arachnophobia, taking care to warn the visitor.

Get acquainted

What is a spider? An animal with eight legs (insects …), unlike a body divided into two parts: the cephalothorax and abdomen (unlike mites …), eye (0 to 8), chelicerae (appendices inject venom), dies (forthe son of silk). In order to clarify the family of spiders (the Spiders), the exhibition presents the animals ‘parents’, what they have in common and their differences – spider, mites, scorpions – and false friends who have to spider’s name as the water spider (it’s a bug), spider crab (crustacean) and the spider at the butcher is a choice cut of beef.

Discover a large family

Become familiar with the spider, is also to discover the infinite variety of species: 1600 in France, between 35 000 and 40 000 in the world, not to mention all those we know, especially in equatorial and tropical , which concentrate the highest number of species. The spiders were indeed colonized all walks of life, even if they are less common in extreme environments and probably absent from the polar caps. Visitors can see the spiders of all sizes, colorful and multifaceted, many of which are not as ugly one wants to admit. Some of them, the most striking, are reproduced in large models.

History of the Hyde Park
This was one of Henry VIII’s royal hunting parks. The current Rotten Row was built in 1689 and was previously the royal processional road. Queen Caroline created the Serpentine separating the park into two-the Kensington Gardens and the Hyde Park. After spending four years as crew on a liveaboard dive boat in Miami and the Bahamas, I can confidently give firsthand information about what is commonly referred to as Sea Lice. I can’t even count how many times I had this, and I’m just grateful that it isn’t a reaction that worsens each time like bee stings can.

Sea Bather’s Eruption

The real name of this pest is Sea Bather’s Eruption, and it has nothing to do with a critter that really is called Sea Lice. However, since that is what english speakers call them, I’ll continue in this article. For the record, on the beaches of Mexico, they are called Pica-Pica.

They are the nearly microscopic larvae of the Thimble Jellyfish which can be found in the Atlantic and Caribbean waters between March and August. They become trapped between the skin and swimming apparel releasing nematocysts, just like jellyfish do. Swimmers end up with an itchy red rash. I’ve had it around my neck after diving with a diveskin, especially at the back.

Sometimes I felt something in the water, just a slight tingling sensation, but usually I had no idea I’d been attacked until late that night. I would get so rashy that it would look like I had a red swimsuit on.The itching is like nothing I’ve experienced before. If I had it really bad, I would sometimes get a little fever. If I realized I’d been stung while I was still in the water, I would rinse off with the salt water hose and then spray myself with vinegar, and this helped somewhat. It always seemed worse if I didn’t realize it and had a freshwater shower after diving or snorkelling.

Treatment and Prevention

We always kept several tubes of hydrocortisone cream on board, and that helped but needed to be reapplied often. I tried Calamine and Caladryl, but they only helped for about an hour.

After I realized that there was a season for sea lice, I began to watch for the signs and watch for guests who were affected by it. I couldn’t and didn’t want to avoid going in the water, so I began taking antihistamine tablets to prevent reacting to the sea lice. This turned out to be the best approach for me. Snorkelling topless worked too!

We could have a boatload of 20 people, and only 2 or 3 of us would be affected, so I’m assuming that some of us were more allergic to the sea lice toxin, just like some people react badly to mosquito bites.  My reaction was brutal and lasted up to 10 days.

My advice is to watch for the warnings. Most beaches and resorts will post signs warning swimmers about sea lice. If you are going to swim during sea lice season, lube up with sunblock, oil or a sea lice specific product like SafeSea. Make sure to apply your choice of product to the skin that will be covered by your swimsuit. Don’t rinse off in your swimsuit, the change of temperature, or going from salt to fresh water, may cause the nematocysts to fire. If you are only going to be in the area for a short time and don’t want to risk getting the rash, take nondrowsy antihistamine before you go in the water. If you do get it, give your swimsuit a scrub in warm soapy water because there may still be some sea lice on the fabric. If you have a severe reaction, see a doctor. I’ve heard of people becoming quite ill with nausea and diarrhea.

The Asian Palm Civet is seen more commonly on other Indonesian islands, but they’re too interesting to pass up. While they’re sometimes called ‘toddy cats’, these mammals are in a taxonomic family of their own, called the veverrids. They are small, looking roughly like a cross between a raccoon and a meerkat, with a triangular head, small round ears, and a long tail. They’re usually covered in coarse greyish fur.

They eat the coffee cherries, which pass through their digestive tract, and the beans are left in their droppings and harvested by farmers.
