The Maldives will divert cash from tourism, to buy land in case rising sea levels submerge its low-lying coral islands, the vice-president-elect said. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik said the “worst-case scenario due to sea level rise would be that some or even all of our islands would become uninhabitable and we would have to look for alternative places for Maldivians to live.”

Eighty per cent of the Maldives’ 1,200 islands – of which 200 are inhabited – are less than a metre above sea level. Studies have said the Indian Ocean state could be submerged within 100 years.

The government of Mohamed Nasheed will be sworn in on 11 November 2008 after the country’s first democratic election, ending 30 years of authoritarian rule by Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, the president.

Mr Gayoom, who has been accused of human rights abuses and criticised for his tight control over the nation’s 380,000 residents, has raised the link between climate change and the human rights of potentially displaced citizens in international forums.

Seven miles long and three miles wide, Culebra Island is a small but scenic island that is quickly becoming a top destination for Caribbean tourists. For those who want isolation and a break from the world at large, a Culebra vacation might be perfect.

For the most part, there is little to do on Culebra Island except take in the sunsets, snorkel in the sea and walk along the scenic beaches The majority of the island is a wildlife refuge despite the complete lack of fresh water. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing - the aridity of Culebra Puerto Rico has one huge benefit: the lack of run-off from rivers and streams means that the waters surrounding the island have better than normal visibility. This is why one of the main reasons to take a ferry to Culebra is for the great diving and snorkeling.

From Fajardo, a ten-minute flight takes guests to picturesque Culebra Island. Like Vieques, its larger sister island to the south, Culebra is blessed with sparkling beaches. From the dock at Ensenada Honda, take a water taxi to one of two islets in the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge: either Culebrita or Luis Peña. If Culebrita, hike up the hill to the historic lighthouse and across the island to the fantastic crescent beach on the north shore. Even though Luis Peña doesn't have a lighthouse, it is equally delightful. After snorkeling, swimming and a picnic, return to port. Spend the rest of the day swimming and sunning at renowned Flamenco Beach until your flight back to the main island and Yuquiyu.

Unknown Island Near Culebra

With eight beaches around the island, quality of surf varies, but the calm, clear and warm water of Flamenco Beach can't be beat. As a matter of fact, Flamenco Beach has been named year after year one of the best beaches of the world. This horseshoe-shaped, palm-tree-lined beach is situated between mountain ridges, and is excellent site for entry-level snorkeling and diving, Playa Flamenco offers toilet facilities, and Coconuts Beach Grill for lunch.

Today Culebra is appealing for what it lacks. There are no luxury resorts, elegant restaurants, discos, movie theaters, casinos, museums or boutiques. There's also no crime, hardly any traffic and few crowds (except during Semana Santa — Holy Week — which precedes Easter).

What Culebra does offer is an unsullied and under-populated beach along with pristine waters filled with beautiful fish. There is also plenty of wildlife. The disconnected tracts of the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge, which total more than one-third of the islands' area, are populated with terns, gulls, pelicans, boobies and several species of endangered turtle.

Langkawi island is an archipelago of 104 islands lying in the north western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The exact location of these tropical islands is at the site where the Straits of Malacca meets the waters of the Andaman Seas.

The largest of these islands is called Langkawi Island and is bigger than the Penang Island.The other islands in this group are Island of Pregnant Maiden (Pulau Dayang Bunting), Lion Island (Pulau Singa Besar) and Beras Basah Island.The smallest of these islands are atolls roughly the size of an ordinary house!

Langkawi is coined from the Malay words Lang and Kawi. Lang is a brown eagle and Kawi is a local manganese stone.The ancient fishermen must have seen eagles flying clutching the manganese stones! A giant monument of a brown eagle clutching the manganese stone greets all visitors to Langkawi near the Kuah Jetty.

The main tourist attractions of Langkawi Island is its virgin white sandy beaches.The beaches have very gentle continental slope and the water is crystal clear.

This island is unique in the sense that it has so many legendsand myths associated with it.Langkawi Island is therefore also called Pulau Lagenda or Legendary Island.

The most talked about legend is that of Mahsuri who is said to have laid a curse on this island for seven generations.Luckily the period of this curse is over now and Langkawi Island is fast becoming an internationally recognised tourist destination.

The government of Malaysia has declared the entire Langkawi Island as a duty free zone. Hence this island is also termed Duty Free Island.All goods sold in this island are exempted from government tax.Therefore this Legendary Island is a haven for the shoppers.You only need to stay in Langkawi for a minimum of 48 hours to take back home a reasonable amount of tax free goods.
