What’s Happening This Week in the   Haliburton Highlands!     Driving the County Art Scene for 25 Years Haliburton County Studio Tour Celebrates A Milestone with an Exhibition at Rails End Gallery and Arts Centre Rails End presents a group exhibition by current and past members of the Haliburton County Studio Tour May 5 – June 16, 2012. Meet the Artists at a Reception Saturday May 5 from 2-4 pm 25 years – a lifetime, a good time, an artful time! Haliburton County Studio Tour celebrates its 25th anniversary with a group exhibition at Rails End that opens Saturday May 5. Titled “Transitions” this exhibition will feature new works by long time members, new studios and even some familiar names from the past! In 1988 there were thirty four artists on the tour and they were over the moon when 190 visitors showed up (in total)! A far cry from these days when The Tour attracts thousands, creates a few traffic jams, and is widely recognized as an important contributor to the local economy and Haliburton’s vibrant arts community. Barbara Joy Peel, Rickie Woods, Susan and Michael Butz, Helen Newton, Gary Chapman, and Charles O’Neil  were on the first Studio Tour and remain to this day. Rails End Curator, Laurie Jones remarks “Artists are always growing and innovating; we expect that from these creative types, and a studio tour lets the public see into an artist’s home, and workplace and puts us into relationship with that artist. This authentic experience is what many people enjoy and it’s something to be celebrated. We are especially pleased to have so many of the artists demonstrating their craft during the exhibition! American French Onion Soup Recipe

French Onion Soup

Ever good main meal needs something to start that meal off and why not french onion soup, has been one of my favourites for many years.

French onion soup is a very easy recipe but when done right it’s a great starter to a main meal or just for lunch.

When cutting up the onions use your favourite slice, long and thin or diced, whatever you like the best.

To make the caramelizing step a bit easier, try using the oven. You can just toss the onions in, stir it once in a while, and wait for them to brown.

You don’t have to stand there and watch as closely as you would on the stove top, and since the oven is blasting the pan with heat from all sides, you get a nice even color.

Regarding the ominous vinegar warning in the video – I think a little touch of sherry vinegar really balances the flavors perfectly, but like salt, everyone’s palate is different. So, if you haven’t used it before, it may be a better to just add the vinegar, to taste, to the finished soup. Drip a little in, taste, and adjust.

Now the cheese – the classic Gruyere Cheese or cheddar and mild Monterey Jack.

History of Fishing

Fishing is a historic practice that dates back to, at least, the beginning of the Paleolithic period of time about 40,000 years ago.

Fishing techniques include hand gathering, spear fishing, netting, angling and trapping.

Fishing tackle is a common term that refers to the equipment used by fishermen when fishing or angling.

Almost any equipment or gear used for fishing is often called fishing tackle.

Some examples are hooks, lines, sinkers, floats, rods, reels, baits, lures, spears, nets, gaffs, traps, waders and tackle boxes.

OK that’s the official description of fishing, simple version is tie a light string to a pole, put on hook on with a pebble of corn, dunk the hook/corn in water and your now fishing.

Recreational and sport fishing describe fishing primarily for pleasure or competition. Recreational fishing has conventions, rules, licensing restrictions and laws that limit the way in which fish may be caught.

Fishing here at the resort is recreational enjoyed mostly by families taking in some family time together.

Hop in the paddle boat or canoe and with a little patience you might snag a small mouth bass. The guys usually love to go ice fishing for lake trout here on Halls Lake.

In late May or early June, the Walleye, Northern Pike, and the greatest freshwater warrior of them all, our legendary Muskie come into season. Muskie have large teeth and a soft dorsal fin situated far back near the forked tail. They differ from the other members of the pike family (Northern pike and pickerels) in having cheeks that are half-scaled; the others have fully scaled cheeks.

The upper body of a muskie is greenish, yellowish, or brownish olive; the sides are light olive-green, yellow, or golden with some dusky spots on the rear third. The belly is white or yellowish.

Can you see yourself casting from the shore, trolling the deep caverns or fly fishing a brook.

There’s a lake, a stream, a river or brook to satisfy every angler’s taste for fishing in the Haliburton Highlands.

Spare ribs (spareribs) are either pork ribs or beef ribs, usually pork.

The most inexpensive cut covering of meat on top of the bones as well as between them.

They are generally cooked on a barbecue or in the oven or on an open fire, and are served as a slab (bones and all) with a sauce. Some people boil them first but not for this recipe.

Barbecue Ribs Low and Slow using the 3-2-1 method makes for an over-the-top “fall off the bone” tender pork sandwich.

For the topping:

• 1/2 cup melted butter
• 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
• 1/2 cup oatmeal (rolled oats)
• 1/2 cup Grape Nuts
• 1/4 cup brown sugar
• 1/4 cup white sugar

 For the filling:

• 5-6 apples
• juice of 1/2 lemon
• 2 tbsp butter
• 1/3 cup white sugar
• 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
• 1 tbsp water
• 1/4 tsp cinnamon

1 egg
1 ¼ cups low fat buttermilk
1 cup plain flour
2 tsp baking powder
¼ cup caster sugar

Your Choice of Toppings

Mixed berries in syrup recipe:

2 cups mixed berries
1 cup water
½ cup sugar

Cook in saucepan on low heat for 1 hour until it’s reduced to a syrup

Ontario Ice Fishing Halls Lake

What a excellent way to check out a winter’s day, on a country lake with the sun glaring down while dangling a hook in a hole, they call this Ice Fishing.

Ice fishing is the practice of catching fish with lines and fish hooks or spears through an opening through the ice on a frozen body of water. Ice anglers may sit on the stool in the open on a frozen lake, or in a heated cabin or shack on the ice, some with bunks and amenities.

Extended fishing expeditions can also be mounted with simple structures. Larger, heated structures helps make multi-day fishing trips possible.

Ice Fishing Huts

A structure with various local names, but frequently called an ice shanty, ice shack, fish house, shack, bobhouse, or ice fishing hut, is sometimes used. They are dragged or trailered onto the lake using a vehicle such as a snowmobile, tractor, ATV or truck.

The two most commonly used types are portable and permanent.

The portable houses or huts are often made of a heavy material that is generally watertight. The two most common types of portable houses are those with a shelter that flips behind the user when not needed, or pop up shelters with a door as the only way out.

The permanent shelters are made of wood or metal and generally have wheels for easy transport. They can be as basic as a bunk heater and holes or have satellite television, bathrooms, stoves, full-size beds and may perhaps appear to be more like a mobile home than a fishing house.

Ice Fishing in Ontario

In North America, ice fishing is usually a social activity. Some resorts have fish huts which are rented out through the day, generally with shuttle service by snowmobile or ATV and other vehicles modified to drive on ice is supplied.

Quite a few fishing ‘hot spots’ will have ice fishing hut rentals for those people so inclined, but those on a budget may wish to go out on the ice with no hut.

Added benefits of using an ice hut are numerous, especially throughout wickedly cold weather. An ice hut allows an angler to get out of the elements, of which, wind is one of the primary concerns.

Keeping Warm Plan Ahead

Really don’t assume that all sunny days will be warm, it’s what the wind is up to and if it’s blowing cold weather. I spend a lot of nights flooding the ice rink on the lake in -20 weather conditions and it may get mighty cold.

Put on heavy felt-pack boots, watertight, and ditto for gloves and warm coat. Long-johns definitely are a must, as is a toque!

Sunglasses should be worn out on the ice, even on relatively dull days. Glare because of the ice and snow can produce snow blindness which can be a very painful and serious condition.

Today’s Methods for Fishing Through the Ice

Ice fishing techniques have changed considerably over the past 20 years. The name of the game is Mobility for today’s modern ice anglers. The days of drilling one particular hole, waiting and hoping that a fish will swim by, are starting to fade.

With light gear, battery-operated sonar units, and fast gas powered augers, an angler can conceivably drill and check hundreds of holes in a single day. Once the fish quit biting where they are, anglers can shift to the next hole, checking it with their sonar first to seek out activity, and if there are no fish they will keep moving until fish are found.

Schools of fish are likely to move around, so a hole may be productive for 10 minutes and then slow down to absolutely nothing for an hour before a school returns to that location. This “fish where the fish are” technique and ease of mobility increases the catch rate of any angler, mainly because it minimizes the wait between bites, just like “trolling” in summer.

Every year three to four friends come to the resort to relax in our four bedroom cottage and enjoy their ice fishing experience on Halls Lake. They look forward to their yearly trip and this year of 2010 was a good one for them. This was the big one but not the only one.

Halls Lake is noted for it’s Lake Trout and Small Mouth Bass.

Ice Fishing in Ontario – Halls Lake after dark will sometimes get you a ling-cod,which is an eel like fish with a head like a catfish.

It’s not uncommon to catch a 4-7 lb Lake Trout, some of our resort guests that have hooked a 4+ lb bass and the kids love catching rock bass from the dock.
