Somewhere in the past few years, the usual dancefloor custom of skanky hip movements that we associate with heavy basslines has been replaced by more seizure-like body dropping that can only be compared to the more primal movements of our Cro-Magnon predecessors. In America, the general audience for electronic music has dismissed most bass music under the shadow of modern dubstep— leaving it to be appreciated by those who have kept close to the underground. It’s quite a calamity to think of all the sexy swag infused bass blends that are being overlooked by the general public in our area of the world.

My solution to the epidemic:  an article that attempts to indulge in all the various assets of proper bass music – keeping the robot sounds and huge drops to a minimum.

The forces behind the tracks in this week’s Night Drive Session are spacious bass and layers of syrupy synths– derived mostly from UK Funky/Garage, but giving props to a spectrum of other sounds. Genres aside, there’s a uniform feel to these tracks that can be appreciated at its fullest during a night drive. These are sounds that blend into the darkness and envelop themselves into the mood of all things once the sun has gone down. When the streetlights turn on and a slight hint of chaos starts to fill the air, it only feels right to give up a little control and let the bass takeover.

Easily my favorite track from his Alphaville EP, the UK producer lays out a lush and soulful bounce vibe that will have you lighting candles and dancing in slow motion.

Vacay regular Flume can do no wrong. Heavy and in your face, but still manages to make you feel like you’re floating.

Hazy euphoric retro disco synths.

Drum programming at its finest. Deep grooves and a complex bass are just waiting to be blasted.

• DUBBEL DUTCH - Throwback

This track recently marked the first official release from LA-based Wedidit collective which also houses prodigal beat chopper Shlohmo. Think spooky crunk vibes sliding on top of mammoth sized synth lines.

Swagged 808 bass bomb complete with some chopped sirens.

• Breton - RDI (Girl Unit Remix)

A complete beauty of a tune that will relax your brain to the point of daydream.

Overwhelming in the best possible sense of the word.

My favorite producer for some time now, the 22-year old Montreal native has joined the recent youthquake of talent with distinct production styles. The name “Jacques Greene’ is actually a pseudonym made up to give respect to his French-American heritage. His music focuses more on swooning synth chords and soulful vocal cuts passed through a vast array of filters, rather than following the usual house type rhythm and bass structure.

Joker shows no signs of wavering his consistent flow of inspirational and clean cut production. His music has gotten play time from every major DJ and radio show that you could possibly think of and I don’t see the wave stopping till this man reaches his full superstar status potential.

A collaboration between Machinedrum and Om Unit can only mean one thing: completely controlled chaos.

CDBL gives this future garage track a bass-heavy old school garage rework.

Honey Brown’s vocals haunt gracefully over a dub-concious bass line.

The legend himself, DJ Dan, is back at it again with another great house tune! This is a great follow up to his last track “Baby Boomers”. I love the harmonica sample in it. You don’t hear that kind of music being sampled often. I definitely will be playing this in a club. The breakdown reminds me of a 20s swing song almost. Great tune overall.

Blood Eagle consistently puts out some of the most intense, head-bangingly-massive, techno-electro-acid tracks to date. They just put out a new track for free titled “PGRM” and it delivers just as well as many of their previous tracks.

The first half of the song feels like a giant tease that continually gives you a taste of what is about to come. Once it drops about halfway through things get pretty intense. For some reason the first image that came to my mind was riding a motorcycle through the desert with a gatling gun on it while shredding on a guitar. Let me know if you felt the same way.
