You have an upright (or a canister) vacuum and you are probably wondering whether or not you need a hand vac too. If you are asking yourself this question, you probably:

Don’t have a hand vacuum already

Don’t think that you need one

Don’t use your big vacuum all that much

Don’t use the attachments on your vacuum

So, what is the answer to whether or not you need a hand vac.

The New Car Syndrome

A lot of people buy hand vacuums about the same time they buy a new car. Why? Because they tell themselves that they need to clean their car more often in order for it to stay “new”.

If you have a new car (or just want to keep your wreck nice), a hand vac is going to be pretty convenient, and you won’t have to worry about lugging your vacuum outside every Saturday morning to clean your car.

A lot of people kid themselves by thinking that since they are going to wash their car at the car wash, they will just use the vacuum there while they are waiting in line.

Sure, this sounds like a good idea, but if you have ever had the bad luck of using one of those vacuums, you are going to know how bad they are. By the time you have pumped quarter after quarter in the machine, you could have used a hand vac two or three times already (and bought yourself a couple of cold sodas from a vending machine with the money that you saved.)

Picking Up After The Pet

Another reason people typically get a hand vacuum is that they finally realize how dirty their pets are. I got my first hand vacuum given to my at the ripe age of 12 by my mother when she was sick of seeing bird feathers and seeds all over my bedroom floor.

Now, hand vacuums are powerful enough to pick up hair, and some of them are even designed to get up all of that hair off of the sofa or bed without sucking up and damaging your blankets or upholstery.

Using a hand vacuum is going to be easier than dragging out your big vacuum daily.

Kids Aren’t Clean

If anyone claims that their children are clean, you are going to be able to call them on it. Kids make messes and sometimes it is easier to just suck the whole mess up rather than try to clean it up.

A hand vacuum with a rotating brush is going to be able to clean the cereal that has been dropped on (and then ground into) your rug easier than anything else can clean it.

The advantage of a hand vac is that you are going to be able to use it during nap time, when vacuuming would otherwise be off-limits.

Sure, you may be kidding yourself that you don’t need a hand vacuum, but most people who do get one (well, a high quality hand vacuum) are going to find that they use it constantly.

Do you have any hand vacuum recommendations? What type of messes do you clean up with yours?

Bagless vacuums are more and more popular with people ditching their vacuums with bags for them. When most people buy their first bagless vacuum cleaner, they often regret it pretty soon.

Here are the top reason vacuums with bags are going to rule.

Coughing Up Dust

You aren’t going to have to empty the canister very often. With a full sized upright you are going to be able to vacuum for a pretty long time without changing the bag.

With a bagless you are going to have to empty the canister every time you vacuum. This can get really messy and dusty, and is a chore that you are going to want to do outdoors (which can be chilly during the winter months). This is just going to add time to your vacuuming.

Did You Really Want To See That?

What is great about a vacuum with a bag is that all of the dust, dirt and gunk that you vacuum up is going to be sucked up into a paper bag, which you can throw away.

One of the gimmicks of a bagless vacuum is that you can see what you vacuumed up. This may sound like something you see, but trust me, it is disgusting.

I like not knowing how much hair (from me and the cat) that my vacuum picked up. I also like not seeing the dirt and dust swirling around. Why? Because it makes me feel guilty that I haven’t vacuumed more often.

The Myth Of The Lost Power

A lot of bagless vacuum companies tell you that you are losing power by having a full dirt bag. Sure, if your dirt bag is so full that it is overflowing back into the machine, you are going to have lost power, but if you change the bag on a regular basis, you won’t have to worry about it.

Breathing Easier

OK, it is true that dust and dirt can’t ever escape from a plastic container, but they can escape from a dirt bag. However, vacuum manufacturers are fixing this problem and a lot of vacuum bags are now made up of 5 or more layers, making it less likely that your vacuum is going to make you sneeze. What more could you ask for?

I’ll be the first to admit that I am not a huge fan of bagless cleaners. There are very few of them out there that are going to work as well as the bagged version and very few that are going to be durable enough.

What do you think about bagged cleaners? Have you found a bagless cleaner that makes you want to jump for joy? Share it with us!

Have you had someone knocking on your door pushing the latest model of Kirby or gone to a regular appliance store only to have an aggressive salesman push the most expensive vacuum cleaner on you?

Usually these vacuum salesmen are going to tell you exactly why you need a thousand dollar vacuum cleaner. If you want to be prepared when you go shopping, you are definitely going to need to know why you need (or don’t need) a thousand dollar vacuum cleaner.

It Keeps Going And Going

You hear stories from your grandmother about her 25 year old vacuum cleaner. Guess what - that vacuum cleaner wasn’t a cheap, disposable cleaner that you can get for less than the cost of a night out.

The next time that your grandma brags about how much her vacuum cost, ask her what she paid for it. She probably paid a lot of money. If you convert the price to how much it would cost today, it would probably be close to $1000.

The plain and simple truth is that if you want a vacuum that is going to last a long time, you are going to have to spend a bit of money.

And If It Doesn’t

On the rare occasion that the thousand dollar vacuum cleaner doesn’t last a long time, it is probably going to be covered under warranty. A lot of the Miele vacuum cleaners, for example, are covered under 7 year warranties. Kirby vacuums have 5 year warranties and then the ability to get them fixed for the life of the vacuum at reasonable prices.

If you look at the warranties of expensive vacuums, you are going to see that a lot of the routine maintenance is included in the price of the cleaner. If a belt breaks or you need to get the vacuum cleaned, you often won’t have to pay a cent.

You Get What You Pay For

A thousand dollar vacuum is going to be designed well and have a lot of testing and research behind that design. The result is going to be a machine that works well.

A lot of the cheap vacuums are going to be made with plastic bits that are poorly designed and are going to snap off whenever you bump it into anything.

The next time you get the recommendation to buy an expensive vacuum, you might want to consider if an expensive vac is for you. It may end up a lot cheaper in the long run to buy one vacuum than it is to buy several cheap vacuums.

How much did your vacuum cost and how long have you had it?

When shopping for vacuum, the first thing that you probably look at is the price tag. The next thing that you look at is what type of dust collector it has and so on.

One thing that is often overlooked is what type of filter your new vacuum is going to have. The vast majority of bagless vacuums have HEPA filters, but bagged vacuums often lack the sophisticated filters that are going to keep the air clean.

It is said that a HEPA filter is able to filter 99.97% of the dust and allergens that are in the air. This means that the air coming out of your vacuum is going to probably be cleaner than the air that is in the room before you vacuum.

Your Next Vacuum

So, which type of filter do you need for your next vacuum?

The HEPA is a great filter and is going to get the air cleaned, but you may not know the disadvantages of these filters.

They are expensive. Filters need to be replaced if they are going to keep filtering working. Sometimes the replacement filter costs 10% of the price of the vacuum.

HEPA filters are going to give you a false sense of security. If you think that vacuuming is going to be enough to clean the air, you are going to be sadly mistaken.

If you get a bagged cleaner, chances are it is not going to have a HEPA filter unless it is one of the more expensive cleaners out there.

So how are a lot of the bagged cleaners going to keep your air fresh? The answer is usually with both a filter (whether HEPA or not) and the bag. This means that you are going to get twice the filtration of a bagless system.

Aren’t Bags Full Of Small Holes?

There are a lot of vacuum companies that are going to say that a vacuum with bags is going to be terrible at filtering out the dirt and dust because of the microscopic holes that are in the bag that let the dust, allergens and dirt back out.

How To Buy Your Next Vacuum?

When you are looking for your next vacuum, there are several things to do to get the best one for your needs.

Decide whether or not filtration is something that is important to you or not. If it isn’t, you can choose your vacuum based on what is important.

Decide whether or not HEPA is important to you. If you do decide that you need a HEPA filter, it is going to be easy to eliminate all of the vacuums that don’t fit the requirements.

Read reviews. You definitely need to read reviews about vacuums before you decide to purchase one. Don’t just read the good reviews, read the bad ones, too to see what the problems with the vacuum are.

Find out about the filter. If the filter isn’t a HEPA filter, you are going to need to research it and figure out if it is going to work for you. If you have asthma or allergies, pay special attention to the reviewers and what they say about the vacuum. If you notice that a lot of reviewers complain about the vacuum blowing dust around, you are going to know that the filter is not that great.

It is not totally necessary to get a HEPA filter. There are good filters out there that aren’t HEPA. So what kind of filter is on your vacuum? Does it work or do you need to wear a gas mask to clean your home?

The one thing that a lot of people who have vacuum cleaners complain about it the weight of them. Some of the plastic vacuum cleaners out there weigh more than 20 pounds, and are really bulky, too.

What Oreck’s claim to fame is a vacuum that is light weight. At only 8 pounds, this Oreck commercial upright vacuum is going to be easy to use and easy to move, making vacuuming a lot more enjoyable.

Oreck 8 Pound Commercial Upright Vacuum Specifications:

Type of Vacuum: Upright

Cleaning Path: 12 inches wide

Dust Collection: Top-fill bags

Attachments: None

Weight: 8 Pounds

Warranty: One year commercial warranty

If you are straining to vacuum, you probably don’t do it very often. If your vacuum is too heavy for you, you need an Oreck.

At only 8 pounds, the major selling point for this vacuum is that it is so light weight. Even a child is going to be able to lift this vacuum (and use it, too).

The Oreck brand is well known for being a vacuum that is going to last for many years. One reviewer gave the vacuum a five star review along with this story about his old Oreck.

I had an old Oreck vac and it finally needed a new motor after 25 years.

For those who are elderly and have trouble bending over, you will be happy to know that you won’t have to strain to turn the vacuum on, because the on/off switch is on the top of the handle.

Cleaning every inch of carpet is easy to do with this vacuum, because the head of the vacuum is low to the ground and thin enough to fit under a lot of furniture that you normally couldn’t get a vacuum under. This is going to save you time because you won’t have to move furniture around anymore.

Like every vacuum cleaner, there are some downsides to this machine. One of them has to do with the vacuum bags. This machine is a top-fill machine, so you aren’t going to lose power when the vacuum bag starts to fill up. You may, however, get a bit of a surprise when you go to find vacuum bags and look at the price tag. The bags are some of the most expensive vacuum bags out there.

The Oreck XL 2000RHB 8 pound commercial vacuum isn’t going to win any beauty contests in the near future. Sure, it comes in a snazzy red color, but overall, it isn’t much to look at.

Will Your Oreck XL 2000RHB Float To The Top?

For about $250, you can get a commercial vacuum into your home, which is easy to use and light weight. This vacuum is going to be a good choice if you want to just vacuum.

If you want a vacuum with attachments, you might want to consider getting a hand vacuum to do that job and keep the Oreck.

How many watts of power does your vacuum have? Chances are it probably has 1440 amps of power, which is pretty standard for a full sized vacuum. But does more power mean that you are going to have a better vacuum?

The answer to this question is that it really depends on the vacuum. You can have a great vacuum with only 1200 or 1320 watts of power that is going to work better than a cheap vacuum with 1440 watts.

So how do you know if your next vacuum is going to have enough power to get the job done if it doesn’t have 1440 watts of power?

It’s Not Just A Name Game

There are several things that are going to be important when buying your vacuum. The most important is the reputation of the vacuum cleaner.

It is definitely true in most cases that you get what you pay for. The better vacuums are going to have enough power whether they have 1200 watts of power or 1440 watts of power.

The reason that quality vacuums have enough power regardless of the numbers is because of their design. Some vacuums are going to be designed to have great suction, while cheaper vacuums are going to be inefficient.

Upright Versus Canister

Upright vacuums are typically more powerful and are going to have better suction than canister vacuums and that is because they need more power to suck out the dirt and dust from the bottom of thick carpets. They also need power to turn the beater brush, which most canister vacuums don’t have.

Plus, you have to remember that it is a lot easier to suck up dirt and hair from a hard floor than it is to pick up dirt from a carpet or rug.

How Much Power Do Your Attachments Lose?

When using your upright vacuum with attachments, you are going to lose power. A lot of vacuums are going to be really inefficient when you add the hose and attachments because they aren’t designed to be used that way to clean big messes.

How Did My Power Get Cut In Half?

Also, with a lot of upright cleaners with bags, you are going to lose more and more power as the bag fills up. To see whether or not your vacuum cleaner is losing power, look at how the dirt empties into the bag. If it goes in from the top, you aren’t losing that much power. Most vacuums, however, will have the dirt come in towards the middle or the bottom of the bag, which means that it gets more and more difficult for the vacuum to work.

The solution is a bagless vacuum, but these can be difficult to clean, (and messy, too) despite the claims that they are maintenance free.

Which Vacuums Have Great Power?

If you are looking for a vacuum with a lot of power (despite how many watts of power it has), check out these vacuums:

Dyson Vacuums: Dyson claims that their bagless vacuums never lose power due to the way they are designed. These vacuums have been designed to keep sucking even if the dirt collector is full.

The Electrolux Intensity: This vacuum has a lot of power because there is only thee inches from the head of the vacuum to the bag. There isn’t much room for suction to be lost.

Miele Vacuums: What is great about most of the Miele vacuums is that you are able to choose how much power you want by turning down the power to clean delicate items.

Does your vacuum have a lot of power or does it suck?

Allergy sufferers know that vacuuming is not a lot of fun. Why? Because it usually beats all of the dust in the carpet from where it was hiding and leaves it hanging in the air for hours. The Healthy Home Bagless Upright Vacuum from Bissell is trying to change all of that.

With a HEPA filter that can filter out 100% of dust mites and over 99.9% of dander, allergy sufferers can breathe easier with this machine.

But what else is there to say about this machine? Is it really going to make your home healthier?

Bissell Healthy Home Upright Vacuum Specifications:

Type of Vacuum: Upright

Power: 1440 Watts

Filter: AireTight HEPA filtration

Cleaning Path: 15 inches wide

Dust Collection: Easy empty dirt cup

Attachments: Upholstery tool, crevice tool, telescoping extension wand and TurboBrush

Warranty: Five year warranty

One thing that a lot of people do when they get a new vacuum is test it out to see how well it is going to suck up dirt, dust and hair (and then they compare this suction power with their old vacuum by going over a room that was just vacuumed with their old vacuum.

Here is what one Amazon.com reviewer had to say about her new Bissell 5770 Healthy Home Bagless Upright vacuum cleaner and how well it cleaned her just-cleaned carpeting.

“It had already sucked up an insane amount of dirt in one three-foot push. Yikes!!”

If you aren’t one to do just one thing, you probably try to multi-task while doing your chores. While vacuuming, you might try to watch TV, listen to the radio or talk on the phone. In order to do this, you are going to need a vacuum that is going to let you do this - you need a vacuum that is quiet.

The Healthy Home Vacuum is quieter than a lot of vacuums out there, so you can clean at any time.

If you have pets, you know that they make a big mess. Not only hair, but dander and dirt, too.

With four allergy sufferers in our home, it’s essential that we pick up enough dust, pet dander, fur, etc. to make a difference. It has proven to be a good investment for us and I hope it will be the same for your family.

The one problem that comes with the Healthy Home vacuum is when you are emptying out the canister, it can cause problems. If you don’t mind doing this outside, it shouldn’t be that big of a problem, but it is something that you should consider, nonetheless.

If you are an allergy sufferer, you are probably going to want to find someone else to empty the canister for you, because it can get a bit dusty and dirty. In the next version, Bissell should work on making emptying the canister a lot easier.

Will This Bissell Turn Your Dirty House Into A Healthy Home?

For the price, this is a really good vacuum cleaner to have. If you are an asthma or a allergy sufferer, you are going to need a vacuum that is made to help keep you healthier, and the Healthy Home vacuum does just that.

Do you need a commercial vacuum for your house? Chances are the answer is going to be “no”, but that shouldn’t prevent you from finding one that is going to be tough enough for a business but still work in the home.

The Royal MRY6100 Commercial Vacuum is going to be inexpensive enough for you to get into your home and tough enough to clean anything that you need.

Royal MRY6100 Commercial Vacuum Specifications:

Type of Cleaner: Upright

Dirt Collection: Bagless dust container

Motor: 1440 Watts

Filter: HEPA filter

Warranty: 1 year

What is different about the MRY6100 is that it has a metal handle. There are very few vacuums that cost less than $200 that have this future.

It doesn’t matter if the handle is made out of metal if the vacuum doesn’t do its primary duty: to clean up the dirtiest areas in your house. Here is what one Amazon reviewer had to say.

The suction factor is excellent.

For $200, you probably don’t expect much in a vacuum cleaner. In fact, you probably don’t expect that the wheels are patented to swivel, making moving this upright vacuum a lot easier than moving other vacuums.

Another feature of this vacuum is the ability to adjust the height of the head to five different levels. It is going to be just as easy to clean hard floors as it is the thickest shag carpet that is hidden in a guest room in your home.

The third thing that is different about this vacuum is that it is going to be easy to use the attachments. They are on-board, making them always accessible because the hose is always ready to be used.

The vacuum cleaner is very sturdy and nicer than I thought it would be for the price.

If you are worried about cleaning up after your dog or cat, the Royal Commercial vacuum is going to be up to the task. With 12 amps of power and a 14 inch cleaning path with edge cleaning, you aren’t going to have to go over your rugs over and over again to get them clean.

HEPA filters aren’t standard in a lot of the lower priced vacuums, so it is really great to find that this one has a HEPA filter that is going to take 99.97% of dust and allergens out of the air.

The only negative about this machine is that the warranty is only one year. Other Royal vacuum cleaners come with longer warranties, so if that is important check those cleaners out.

Is The MRY6100 Going To Give You The Royal Treatment?

For around $200, the Royal MRY6100 is a solid vacuum cleaner. If you don’t necessarily need something this heavy-duty, check out some of the other Royal cleaners, like the Royal Privilege.

Do you clean under the beds or furniture? Chances are it has been months since you last pulled out the furniture and cleaned out underneath. When you finally decide to do this big job, you are going to be shocked at how must dirt and dust is actually under there.

If you want to clean your whole floor every single time you clean, check out iRobot’s Roomba 530. This robotic vacuum is going to not only clean where you normally clean, but also get under the furniture.

iRobot 530 Roomba Vacuuming Robot Product Specifications:

Type of Cleaner: Robotic vacuum

Dirt Collection: Bagless filter

Included Attachments: 2 virtual walls to guide the vacuum

Warranty: 1 year

The Roomba is not a new product, and the 530 is an improvement over some of the earlier Roombas that are out there. Here is what one Amazon reviewer thought of all of the changes.

This new generation fixes all the problems of the previous. Much smarter, much bigger dust bin, much better in every way.

What is great about the Roomba robotic vacuum is that it is going to be simple to clean your floors every day. This is going to be essential if you have children that are crawling (or walking around barefoot), pets that shed or you like to keep the windows open.

Another plus of the 530 is that it has a self-charging home base so that when it is finished cleaning your floors, it is going to recharge itself automatically until it is scheduled to clean again.

With this model, you are going to be able to block off areas of the room that you don’t want vacuumed. This will help the Roomba get everything cleaned and not hung up on a lot of power cords or fall down stairs. This model comes with two of these virtual walls giving you a great way to clean your home without worrying.

The one thing that they haven’t fixed on the Roomba 530 is the problem with the brushes. Poor quality and design of these brushes is going to probably give you reason to deal with iRobot’s customer service within the one year warranty period.

Their phone support is pitiful and their service department does not exist. Any company that willfully turns happy customers into unhappy customers everyday will soon be out of business.

Will The Roomba Change The Way You Clean?

If you are looking for a cute vacuum for your hard floors, check out the Hoover Constellation, which is going to last longer than the Roomba and clean just as well (although you are going to have to clean it yourself).

If you have a lot of carpet and are looking for a trendy vacuum, the Electrolux Intensity is going to do the job. With a foldable handle, it is only going to be a bit bigger than a Roomba when it is in storage.

Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Durability Rating: 2 out of 5 stars
Ease Of Use Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Amazon Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Overall Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

If you are finally retiring the Kirby, Miele or Electrolux vacuum that you have had for the past 15 years, you my be surprised at the quality of the machines that are out there for sale.

Unless you buy one of the rare cleaners out there that is still made of metal, chances are it is going to be made out of plastic.

What You Will Love About Your New Plastic Vacuum

When picking up a new vacuum for the first time, you are going to be happy about how much it weighs, because a lot of these plastic vacuums are a lot lighter than the metal tank that you have been using to clean your rugs. A lighter vacuum is going to be easy to move around (both when cleaning and when carrying the vacuum from room to room and up and down stairs).

Another great thing about those plastic vacuums for sale is that they are a lot cheaper than vacuums that are made out of metal. The going rate for a Kirby vacuum is over $1000, but you can get a plastic vacuum cleaner for less than $100.

You may be wondering whether or not a plastic vacuum is going to be tough enough or if you are going to end up with a bunch of plastic bits falling off after using it for a while.

Finding A Tough Vacuum

There are different qualities of plastic that are used in vacuums and there are also places where using plastic parts is going to make the vacuum cheap and flimsy.

To find out whether or not your plastic vacuum is tough, you are going to have to take a look at it before you buy it. You should be able to tell right away whether it is strong enough to hold up to your cleaning.

Some of the weaker parts on vacuums that break off a lot are:

the latch to the dirt bag

the on/off switch

the attachments and the plastic wands

the clip that holds the filter in place

You are definitely going to want to check these parts and see whether or not they are going to break off easily.

Will They Fix It?

The next thing to look at is the warranty. Some plastic vacuums are going to only have one year warranties and some of them are going to have longer warranties, for 5 or 7 years.

You want to make sure that the warranty is going to fix broken parts on the vacuum. You may find that the warranty only covers the motor, and you are going to be out of luck if a part that you need to operate the vacuum snaps off because it was made out of plastic.

What Plastic Vacuums Are Going To Last

If you are looking for a plastic vacuum that is going to last, take a look at Dyson vacuums. These plastic vacuums are made out of the same material that helmets are made of, so you know that they are going to be tough.

What has broken off of your plastic vacuum? How long did you have it before it broke for the first time?
