Wendell Bell is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Yale University. After
flying 3 years in the U.S. Navy, starting during WWII, he briefly became a
commercial pilot, eventually graduating with a B.A. in Social Science from
California State University, Fresno in 1948, and then earning a Ph.D. from
UCLA. From 1952, he served as Assistant Professor of Sociology at Stanford
University, and in 1963, he accepted a Professorship at Yale, where he was
asked to serve as Chair of the Department of Sociology, creating (with
Harold D Lasswell) the ephemeral Collegium on the Future. As early as
1966-68, he received, jointly with a colleague, a Russell Sage Foundation
grant for an investigation of “the sociology of the future,” resulting in
several future-oriented articles and the edited volume ”The Sociology of
the Future” (Bell and Mau 1971). He increasingly worked in the futures
field, producing his major work, the two-volume ”Foundations of Futures
Studies” (1997).

Since 1953, Bell has written or co-authored ten books and more than 200
articles, chapters in books, or book reviews. He served on the Commission
on Connecticut’s Future; spent 16 years on the Advisory Council of the
Institute of Global Ethics; evaluated research on culturally-appropriate
dispute resolution procedures for the Hawaii Research Center for Futures
Studies and the Hawaiian Judiciary; consulted for the (now dissolved)
Office of Technology Assessment of the U.S. Congress on a variety of
issues. His latest book is a memoir, “Memories of the Future” (2012).

China’s honey moon period is over; it’s labour is not so cheap anymore and in the future, it may not find it so easy to win business by simply undercutting the competition for price. Chinese government report shows that 70% of its rural migrants are now under 30, this means a large amount of the workforce is now part of the 80s generation. In China, this represents the workers who have grown up during the nation’s economic revival and have higher expectations than previous generations. They are looking for higher salaries, basic benefits, better conditions and less physically demanding jobs.
