The Thais really know how to throw a festival, and Songkran is a heart-warming display of Thai friendliness and their great party spirit. It is without a doubt, the biggest party of the year; where traditionally, after going to the temple the villagers would meet in the street and anoint each other with water and talcum powder in a friendly manner. The festival celebrates the end of the dry season, lasts three to seven days in different areas and has always involved water. However in recent years; wild water fights have erupted in many tourist areas.

Het Songkran Festival, oftewel het Thais Nieuw Jaar, wordt jaarlijks rond 13 april gevierd en duurt drie dagen lang. Bewoners uit de steden trekken terug naar het platteland om het met familie te vieren. Al vroeg in de ochtend worden volgens de boeddhistische traditie voedseloffers gegeven aan monniken. Het festival wordt ook wel het Waterfestival genoemd, omdat het festival plaatsvindt vlak voordat het regenseizoen aanbreekt.

De jongere generatie eert oudere familieleden, door gezegend water over de handen te gieten en op de straten wordt met water gegooid om elke willekeurige voorbijganger nat te gooien. Het festival stamt oorspronkelijk af van een regenceremonie. Volgens een legende brachten "naga’s", mythologische slangen, regen door water uit de zee te spugen. Hoe meer water, des te meer regen, wat dan weer goed is voor de oogst.
Het Songkran festival wordt drie dagen gevierd, waarvan elke dag weer een ander thema heeft. Op de eerste dag staat het afscheid nemen van een oud tijdperk centraal. De tweede dag staat in het teken voor de voorbereidingen voor het Nieuwe Jaar en op de derde dag wordt het Nieuwe Jaar gevierd. Tijdens het festival krijgt men een goed beeld van de lokale cultuur, de Thaise keuken en de bevolking. Iedereen heeft tijdens Songkran veel plezier en doordat de zomer op haar hoogtepunt is, werkt het water ook als een heerlijke verkoeling. In de steden is de sfeer uitgelaten en vrolijk, Thai en westerse toeristen vieren samen feest. Ook serieuze festiviteiten vinden plaats; boeddhabeelden worden de tempel uitgedragen, rondgedragen door de straten en natgegooid, een ritueel dat geluk brengt.

King's Birthday or Father's Day is celebrated on December 5, the birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the monarch of Thailand. King's birthday is a national holiday and is celebrated all over the country with great enthusiasm. The event is used by the loyal people of Thailand to express their reverence for their King.

His MajestyHis Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej or Rama IX, is the longest serving monarch in the history of Thailand. Constitutional head of the country, he ascended to throne on 9 June, 1946. Ninth King of the Chakri Dynasty, he was born on December 5, 1927, to Prince and Princess Mahidol of Songkhla.

The Celebrations The King's Birthday is an event used by his loyal subjects to express their heart-felt affection and reverence to him. All public structures and homes in Thai land are eleborately bedecked with flags and lights, predominantly of yellow color. Capital Bangkok, specially Grand Palace and Ratchadamnoen Avenue areas, exude pageantry, adorned with thousands of flowers.

Religious ceremonies dedicated to the King are held all over the nation. People pray for their beloved King's good health and happiness. Thai skies sparkle with elaborate fireworks.

BANGKOK, Thailand — Clashes between an ethnic rebel group in Myanmar and government soldiers have pushed a flood of at least 10,000 refugees across a river into Thailand, one day after Myanmar held its first election in 20 years.
In the attack, ethnic Karen rebels seized a police station and post office Sunday in the border town of Myawaddy, wounding at least 10 people on both sides of the river, according to reports from the border.
The fighting continued Monday, a reminder of a long-running civil war with a number of ethnic groups that has raged for decades in remote mountains and jungles in the former Burma, far from the politics that consume the cities. .....

One of the most beautiful festivals of Thailand, the Loy Krathong festival is celebrated in the 12th month of the traditional Thai lunar calendar. This day usually falls in November of the western calendar. The term Loi means 'to float' and "Krathong" means a lotus shaped vessel that is made of banana leaves. The Krathong is decorated with flowers, candles and incense sticks and also has some coins in it.

The Origin Of The Festival & Its Significance The festival traces its origin to the Hindu festival of Dipawali which is celebrated in India. Originally, it was celebrated as a thanksgiving ceremony to River Ganges, however, the Buddhists of Thailand adapted the festival to honour Lord Buddha. The candle raft (Krathong) is floated in the water as a mark of respect to the Buddha. Also, the raft is believed to carry along with it all the sins, grievances and angst of the person floating it, thereby offering an opportunity to begin a new life in a much better manner. A number of people cut their fingernails and hair and put it in the raft as a symbol of breaking away with all negative aspects of oneself.

The floating of the raft is also a way to give respect and thanks to the Goddess of water, Phra Mae Khongkha. It is also supposed to bring good luck.
The Beauty Contest A Beauty Contest is organised during the festival and is known as "Noppamas Queen Contests". As per a legend, Nang Nopamas was the royal consort of King Ramkhamhaeng (the founder of Sukhothai). She was the first one to float a krathong in the water. She decorated it beautifully and floated it in the waters of the palace canal in a manner that it drifted past the king. The king was extremely impressed by this gesture and also the beautiful krathong. This incident gave rise to
a belief that if two lovers float a krathong on the water and if it continues to float till the time it is visible, then the love of the two will forever bloom
