Textures in ad design

Sometimes, just adding a couple of textures over an image along with some manipulation is all it takes to come up with something sweet, like this NBRPA ad celebrate The Louisiana Weekly's 90th year.

Custom icons banish blue folders

I was displeased when Apple changed over to those generic blue folders. I liked the colored ones because I could color code documents. Ah well, from then on, I decided to make custom icons for my folders. Usually I delete the art once I replace the folder icon but since I didn't delete this one (yet) I decided to post it.

Ah, it has been such a long while since I've posted anything. I have been busy with other endeavors but I came across this tutorial at PHLearn and thought I'd give it a try and then share it. In New Orleans snow is such a rare event that about the only way to get some is to create it in Photoshop so here is my attempt.

As a photojournalist I learned to always take photos from several angles and distances. As an editor, I learned never to flip a photo to fit the format of a page. Somehow, that knowledge has not been passed on to online journalists.

Which of Busey's eyes is wider? On which side of Tyson's face is his tatoo?

Color to Black and white

When designs have to be in both color and black and white it would be so easy to just desaturate or convert to grayscale. Often, however, a bit of reworking is needed.

Photoshop Unskilled

This image looked so odd I had to snap a screen shot and post it here. The girl has infant hands, her hair is so smooth around the edges and the box has a shadow but she doesn't—just a few of the things that I noticed. First was the hands. I didn't realize this was an ad for a credit card for a few minutes because the visual caught me—for all the wrong reasons.
