Hey! We are back and I hope you are too. I know it has been a long time since our last podcast and I also know that there are a few of you still subscribed. I get questions from time to time about what happened to the show and quite frankly I got busy with other projects and next thing I knew time had lapsed.
BUT…Here is a new Chapter, and we are back and I hope you stick with me.

In this episode I thought we would take a look at where Open Source / Free Software comes from and what it all means, and to do that I needed someone that could explain it all in good form. Thomas “The Command Line” Gideon joins me to explain it all and even enlightened me on a few topics.

This is a longer episode than I normally would have and we will get back to a more familiar format going forward. That said, I hope you enjoy our conversation and learn a little something too. I know I did.

Google Chrome OS Available? NOT!!

Apparently someone is trying to pull a fast one on all us geeks. Even I was duped. I saw a notice that the Google Chrome OS was available and immediatly went to download it. I did take pause for a sec and notice that this was posted on a Google Sites page, “sites.google.com”, however that didn’t really stop me.

I started the download and tweeted about it. I started getting tweets back that it was a fake! So beware if you see this notice about it’s beta release.

Twitter abuzz with news of a beta Google Chrome OS. Yep, it’s a hoax.
Gizmodo posted news of a leaked Chrome OS download with a number of popular open source applications including OpenOffice, and GIMP preinstalled.
Naturally when a site like Gizmodo, posts something this bloggable, you’d expect geeks to stop whatever they’re doing and get downloading. You would be right. Twitter’s lost the plot and other respected sites including the likes of Daring Fireball reported the story (albeit inquiringly).

One look at the URL should have rung alarm bells, but you should note – this is definitely NOT a Google Chrome OS. The site has been around two weeks and all it is is GNOME with a Chrome browser, and if you’re still not convinced, the footer says “Chrome OS is not related to Google. Service provided by SUSE Studio. See the license.”

Now spread the word to these lot.

Actually to start things off I was thinking of participating in NaNoPodMo. If you are not familiar with NaNoPodMo it is were you podcast each day for a month, and that month being November. So…Starting November 1st, I plan on making a small podcast each day relating to an Open Source Project.

Look for it, put it on your Calendars…Tell your neighbors. November 1st, Valid Syntax.

New ThinkingRock Releases

This is another gem of the Open Source world. ThinkingRock is an app that will help you organize and work your todo list. Actually that isn’t quite a fair description, it’s much more than just a todo list and project manager. It’s a system written to work with your GTD system and it’s philosphies if you are a David Allen Follower.

There is a new version as of June 2nd, 2008 (Version 2.0.1) so go and have a look! It is however free and available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. (Written in Java) They do ask for donations to help fund development, so if you use it and like it like I do, please consider a tip their way.

You’ll be hearing more from me on this in the next Valid Syntax.

Sunday night, since we are not recording Technorama as a weekly show any longer, I thought I would use the time slot to record Valid Syntax.

So, Sunday May 11th about 9:30pm Eastern Standard time head over here for the webcam and audio stream. I will be recording a new show for Valid Syntax, and generally hanging out with all the regulars in the chat room.

I do have a come back plan…I know it has been a while since I have put out a new show, and for those of you still subscribed, I appreciate you hanging with me.

I plan on bringing Valid Syntax back, same focus on Open Source for all Operating Systems…but may change up the format a little to keep things fresh. I plan on getting things in line very soon…perhaps as early as this week.

Starting the New year off right…

Tonight, I have no plans for New Years, and unless something changes I will be assembling a new Valid Syntax. Sorry for the delay, but there are a number of factors that had stepped in my way.

SO, I hope you are rested after the holidays…cause 2008 looks bigger and brighter for Open Source.

Note: I have to confess, I ordered myself a Nokia N810 today! Can’t wait for it to arrive!
