Join us for a celebration of musician, composer, and Rensselaer Arts Department faculty member Pauline Oliveros on the occasion of her 80th birthday. Presented in collaboration with the Rensselaer Arts Department, this free concert will feature a reception with nine birthday cakes and the opportunity to support Oliveros' venerable Deep Listening Institute. Every member of the audience will receive a free copy of the hot-off-the-presses DVD with the video of the joint concert by Oliveros and Cecil Taylor at the opening festival of EMPAC in 2008.

One of the highlights of this concert is an acoustic simulation of the Fort Worden Cistern—a two-million-gallon underground water tank made famous by Oliveros' 1988 Deep Listening album and recreated by Jonas Braasch, professor in Rensselaer's Architectural Acoustics program. It will empower EMPAC's concert hall to sound like the cistern with its 45 seconds of reverberation. Guests are invited to listen to the process of tuning the concert hall in the afternoon from 11:30 AM to 2 PM as Jonas Braasch and Pauline Oliveros prepare for the evening performance.

Pauline Oliveros' life as a composer, performer, and humanitarian is about opening her own and others' senses to the many facets of sound. Since the 1960s, she has profoundly influenced American music through her work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth, and ritual. All of Oliveros' work emphasizes musicianship, attention strategies, and improvisational skills. Many credit her with being the founder of present day meditative music, and she has been celebrated worldwide. Sounding the Margins, a forty-year retrospective, will be released soon in a six CD boxed set from Deep Listening.

"What could a musikFabrik (music factory) be?" When asked this question, a young child answered, "That's where they create music that hasn't been made yet." Ensemble musikFabrik has been commissioning new works and performing unknown music since 1991. The Cologne-based soloist ensemble plays more than 100 international concerts each year, and has built a close association with prominent conductors and composers.

musikFabrik comes to EMPAC after a Fromm Foundation residency at Harvard University, where they will collaborate with PhD composition students in performing their latest works. The ensemble will select two pieces from the Harvard premiere to perform, providing a unique opportunity to hear what these young composers currently are up to.

Setting the context for these new pieces are John Cage's Concert for Piano and Orchestra; Interference by British composer Richard Barrett, a piece for contrabass clarinet and kick-drum; and the colorful chamber music piece Paramirabo by Canadian composer Claude Vivier.

This is concert presented with support from the Goethe-Institut New York.

Cologne-based musikFabrik is a leading contemporary music ensemble dedicated to artistic innovation. New, unknown, unusual, and often personally commissioned works are typical of their productions. They perform in over 100 concerts a year in Germany and abroad, at festivals, in their own series "musikFabrik in WDR," and in regular radio recordings and CD productions.

Interdisciplinary projects include live electronics, dance, theater, film, literature, and creative art. They also present discussion concerts and alternative concert forms involving audience participation. Because of their extraordinary reputation and superb artistic quality, musikFabrik is a trusted partner of renowned composers and conductors worldwide.

Sorry, there was a bad joke in the last email that perhaps is confusing. Jem Cohen is not free, and the beer at the Art Center also costs money. I apologize if that was confusing.. there was an assumption people knew it wasn't free, and thus would make it a play on the free beer vs. free speech distinction. Fail.

"Free beer" vs "free speech" distinction

In software development, where the cost of mass production is relatively small, it is common for developers to make software available at no cost. One of the early and basic forms of this model is called freeware. With freeware, software is licensed free of charge for regular use: the developer does not gain any monetary compensation.

With the advent of the free software movement, license schemes were created to give developers more freedom in terms of code sharing, commonly called open source or free and open source software (called FLOSS, FOSS, or F/OSS). As the English adjective free does not distinguish between "for zero price" and "liberty", the phrases "free as in free beer" (gratis, freeware) and "free as in free speech" (libre, free software) were adopted. Many in the free software movement feel strongly about the freedom to use the software, make modifications, etc., whether or not this freely usable software is to be exchanged for money. Therefore, this distinction became important.

When I hear video games and human life cycle, my first thought is a half-man, half-pirahna dancing to a remix of "A Winner is You" on a sunday night in Troy (listening to WRPI, obviously). So what better way to follow the Level fest than a Tag Team DJ spectacular? It's twice the DJ!

Starting off we have a new experiment from DJ's back from japan and il. This is the first time they've played out together, but I'd expect lots of Nicolas Jaar + 80's edits.

Finishing off the night, or depending how you look at it, getting the good part started, are veteran DJ's Jay Travis + Brad Lee. Jay played TNO for the first time in January and we're glad to have him back. Brad played the old Goodship Tuesdays for the first time in 2001 or so. He must have been about 14 then...

This premiere of Cohen's EMPAC-commissioned project is a documentary-based hybrid built from film footage of Nova Scotia, various texts, and live music featuring such stellar musicians as:

As an artist who has explored and deplored the disappearance of regional character brought on by corporate-driven homogeneity, the discovery of Cape Breton was a revelation for Cohen, who describes it as a place as beautiful as any he has ever seen throughout his travels, but one that remains elusive and deeply "itself."

This 1995 take on classic Hollywood Westerns, featuring Johnny Depp, Crispin Glover, Iggy Pop, Robert Mitchum (in his final film role), and Billy Bob Thornton, tells the story of William Blake, an accountant from Cleveland who goes to the town of Machine for work, a misadventure that soon turns him into an outlaw. Set to an eerie, improvised soundtrack by Neil Young, Dead Man constitutes a physical and mythical journey that ends as it begins.

In 1984, Jim Jarmusch made Stranger Than Paradise, a black-and-white picaresque film that won the Caméra d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Two years later, he created another picaresque fable, the critically acclaimed Down by Law. In 1989, Jarmusch completed the trilogy with the release of Mystery Train. His ambition is to create a new cinematic language shaped by his two major influences: the world cinema of Europe and Japan, and the cinema of Hollywood. "I'm interested in finding a bridge between these," he has said. I'd like to embrace both sides without negating one or the other."

The Eternal Return is a collection of films begins with the idea that time is a lie. Reveling in déjà vu and non-linear timelines, the series is inspired by such varied sources as Nietzsche's notion of the eternal recurrence and the multiverse hypothesis in physics. Each of the films in the series is structured by a central narrative loop and a thematic focus on the incommensurability of the momentary and the eternal.

There are many ideas of what EMPAC should be—and the mission and program it pursues.

EMPAC was conceived 12 years ago. Our team and program ramped up in parallel to the planning and construction of the actual building. Three and a half years ago the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center opened its doors and our full program was initialized.

The evening will start with an overview from EMPAC's Director, Johannes Goebel, establishing the link between our overall mission as part of Rensselaer, our place in the various communities we serve, current activities and future developments, and our team and operation.

Most importantly, how do the many pieces of this puzzle merge to create a multi-faceted picture?

The majority of the evening will be an exchange with the audience. We hope that everyone who is interested will join us. Of course, snacks will be available to fuel the discussion.

The expression of seduction in sound and image is explored through Infinite Jest, an installation and film inspired by David Foster Wallace's novel of the same name. Starting as an installation, the film is brought to life with a live electronic soundtrack and cameras that follow the manipulation of two- and three-dimensional objects. Set in a slightly futuristic world, the film creates and re-creates a film that the novel's character, James Orin Incandenza, considered his life's work.

SUE-C was born Sue Costabile in Long Island, New York. For the past 10 years she has created handmade videos for both the stage and screen as a visual and performing artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her works challenge the norms of photography, video, and technology by blending them all into an organic and improvisational live performance setting. Employing a variety of digital tools to create an experimental animation "instrument," SUE-C synthesizes cinema from photographs, drawings, watercolors, hand-made papers, fabrics, and miniature lighting effects. Her work emphasizes the beauty of half forgotten, often unnoticed, in-between spaces in her surroundings. http://www.sue-c.net/

AGF, aka Antye Greie, born and raised in East Germany, is a singer and digital songwriter, producer, performer, e-poet, calligrapher, and digital media artist known for her artistic exploration of digital technology through the deconstruction of language and communication. Her poetry, which she converts into electronic music, calligraphy, and digital media, has been presented on records, live performances, and sound installations across Europe, America, and Asia. http://www.poemproducer.com/

Projects include the German electronic duo Laub, the Lappetites, AGF/Delay, The Dolls, and Zavoloka/AGF. She received the 2004 Award of Distinction at the ARS Electronica festival. She lives in Hailuoto, Finland.

A work in progress performance as part of a residency in which Pete Edwards (Casper Electronics, Troy, NY) and Sabisha Friedberg develop a composition influenced by the audience's movement through space.

Using array of loudspeakers distributed in three-dimensional space throughout Studio 1 - Goodman, they explore how frequency waves interact with one another and physical bodies, canceling each other out or making sounds audible. Edwards and Friedberg will be controlling the piece from stations in the center of the room, reacting to the sonic environment created around them.

The score is inspired by various scientific and metaphysical sources, including the writings of Vic Tandy, which suggest that certain sonic equations yield supernatural experiences. This exploration of the aural and the physical—informed scientifically, logistically and intuitively—will be the basis of this experiential performance.

In addition to the public performance on Friday, April 6 at 8 PM, New York based butoh-trained choreographer Kota Yamazaki and two dancers from Africa, Shiferaw Tariku (Ethiopia) and Marie Agnes Gomis (Senegal), will offer a unique workshop focusing on the fundamentals of butoh, and the common threads found between butoh and African dance. Inspired by the creative process of his newest work (glowing), Yamazaki offers a special opportunity to explore these dance styles and to experience his creative process.

Maximum workshop size: 15 people
** No dance experience necessary

Kota Yamazaki was born in Niigata and studied fashion design in Tokyo. He was first introduced to butoh through the teaching of Akira Kasai at the age of 18. He was a finalist in the Platform of Bognolet Competition in France, and then formed his Tokyo-based dance company, Rosy co., where he created original works in collaboration with various artists, including architect Toyo Ito, until 2001. Since 2002, Yamazaki has worked with New York-based Kota Yamazaki/Fluid hug-hug, and his work has been presented nationally and internationally at PICA's TBA Festival, Melbourne International Arts Festival, BAM Harvey Theater, Dance Theater Workshop, and NUS for the Arts in Singapore, among others. In 2007, Yamazaki received the New York Dance and Performance Award ("Bessie") with Germaine Acogny for the choreography of FAGAALA performed by Senegal-based dance company, Jant-Bi. Since 2009, he has been director of Body Arts Laboratory and organizer of the Whenever Wherever Festival in Tokyo. http://www.kotayamazaki.com/
