Short Term
This type of placement usually lasts from anything between a few days and a couple of months. This happens generally when the authorities are assessing if the child’s birth parents are suitable to care for the child, or while a more permanent living solution is found (i.e looking for an adoptive family)

Long Term
This is more of a permanent placement which can last a number of years. This type of placement is sometimes preferred to adoption if the child is somewhat older, or if they are in regular contact with one or both of their parents.

Emergency This type of placement is as the name suggests – when a child or young person needs a safe and secure environment at extremely short notice. Usually this type of placement can last for a few hours or a few days.

Respite
This type of care usually is a shorter term placement which will give the child’s usual fostering family a break. Sometimes this placement occurs if the child or young person has specific needs, giving the foster family a short break or holiday.

Mother and Child
This type of placement occurs when the mother of the child is of a young age or simply may not be able to care for the child by themselves. They will both live with the foster family who will be able to support them both and allow the mother’s parenting skills to develop. This placement tends to end when the parent is deemed capable of looking after their child without support.

Begin with the bedding – most baby cribs feature a standard size rectangular mattress and you will need several sets of baby bedding. The Birth Defect Law Center, currently is representing clients in a Mass Tort that is being litigated in the Court, In re Topamax Litigation. According to the Court’s website, a status conference will be held in the litigation on January 6.

Meanwhile, the Birth Defect Law Center, and other attorneys representing plaintiffs in more than 50 Zoloft cases, are awaiting a decision on whether the Court will designate the cases as a Mass Tort. Earlier this month, the cases were sent back to the Court after the defendants had attempted to have them removed to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Both the Topamax and Zoloft cases are being litigated in Philadelphia’s Complex Litigation Center, which is the first courthouse in the U.S. that has been designed exclusively for handling complex Mass Tort cases and is under the administration of the Honorable Sandra Mazer-Moss.

“Mass Tort cases involve a large number of lawsuits that are associated with a single product and involve similar factual and legal issues,” said BDS, whose Birth Defects Law Firm represents clients in dangerous drug cases throughout the U.S. “When cases are designated as a Mass Tort, it allows the litigation process to be more streamlined and efficient for all parties.”

“In the Topamax litigation, we are looking forward to discussing the progress of the cases at the next status conference and preparing for the first trials to take place,” BDS added. “We are pleased that the Zoloft cases were sent back to the Court of Common Pleas, and we are eagerly awaiting the decision on whether they will be given Mass Tort status.”

Topamax (topiramate) is an anti-seizure medication produced by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (f/k/a Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.). The plaintiffs in the litigation allege that their use of the drug during pregnancy resulted in congenital birth defects among their children, including oral clefts (also known as cleft lip or cleft palate) and heart defects. The plaintiffs allege that they were not properly warned about the risk of these birth defects.

Zoloft (sertraline) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) anti-depressant. The plaintiffs claim that their use of that drug during pregnancy resulted in their children’s suffering serious and permanent congenital birth defects, including heart and lung defects, neural defects, abdominal development problems and limb malformation. The plaintiffs in the Zoloft cases also allege that they were not given proper warnings about these risks.

Today was the 2009 graduation ceremony at the University of Minnesota, Morris. These photos are from the Division of Science and Mathematics reception for graduating science and math students and their families. This included the Computer Science graduates, so there is a bit of a bias in that direction here.

Part of this reception is group photos on the staircase for each major. I took photos of the first two (Biology and Chemistry), but then after Computer Science the faculty ended up doing photos with each graduating CSci student and I missed the rest of the big group photo ops.

ADHD teenagers are faced with all sorts of problems. It is bad enough being a normal teenager but ADHD does present extra challenges. ADHD teenagers have a much higher percentage of traffic accidents, missing school and getting on the wrong side of the law. About a third of them will either be expelled from school and /or have to repeat a school year. If the ADHD teenager is left to his to her own devices and not treated or helped, then those numbers rocket.

Everyone in the family is signed up to the behavior rules including curfew times, chores, homework and all the other things. Explaining the rules, why they are set and the consequences if they are not adhered to, needs to be made clear. How do you manage anger in a violent argument? This is usually a problem with ADHD teens who have the hyperactive ADHD type or the combined type. Shouting, cursing and violent behavior needs to be handled calmly. The parent sometimes has to have time-out themselves – it works just as well for both parties. Speaking with a low voice forces the teenager to calm down and shout less, otherwise he or she will not hear you! In calmer moments, you could point out that it is all a matter of self-control and the guy who shouts and curses usually is the loser in any sort of argument. The parent can also pick his or battles and this is a good way of leaving some trivial things go. Think of ways to divert their anger and help them to let off steam and that means in many cases, accompanying them to do sports if you can. Apart from being a great bonding activity, it is also good for everybody physically and mentally. The more contact parents have with ADHD teens, the more they are likely to be able to connect with them.

Third Parenting Tip

Make sure you know who your teen is hanging out with and that you or a trusted fellow parent knows what is going on. I would extend this to knowing what goes on at school and it is always useful to have lots of contact with the teachers. Focus on the positive traits and good talents he has and praise them when appropriate. Supervision also means following school progress and homework.

ADHD medication is not going to teach any of the above parenting skills and there is no known parenting medicine! But ADHD drugs for ADHD teenagers are full of unknowns. Why risk your child’s health?
