Sierra Gorda Sociedad Contractual Minera (SCM)are executing a copper/molybdenum desert mining project in Chile. The Atacama Desert in Antofagasta region, North of Chile is one of the driest regions on earth. Precipitation is extremely rare and there is no surface water at the project area. Therefore, the project will rely heavily on sea water delivered via a 350 kilometer long pipeline from the Pacific Ocean. The Sierra Gorda mining facility is expected to process 110,000 tons per day (t/d) of mineral and its operations will begin late in 2014. The anticipated life of the project is 21 years and the equipment supplied must have a 25-year life expectancy. The engineers at SCM had to choose a vendor who could address the challenges of the project including its harsh conditions. They turned to Metso to supply state of the art control and on/off valves to be used to control the flow of process that make-up water for a variety of applications in the mine. To combat the highly corrosive effects of seawater, Metso engineered valves constructed of SMO254tm austenitic stainless steel, which are highly resistant to the effects of chlorides. Metso also deployed 54 Neles V-port segment control valves from 1" to 12", on/off valves from 3" to 18" (with Series B1, QPX pneumatic actuators or BIFFI electric actuators) as well as numerous Jamesbury ball valves. Emerson recently introduced the remote mount digital valve controller, which separates the Fisher FIELDVUE DVC6205’s travel sensing and controlling segments helping it meet extreme temperature, vibration valve demands. Emerson’s Fisher FIELDVUE DVC6205 remote-mount digital valve controller is an innovative solution for applications in which accessibility, extreme  temperatures (up to 120°C / 250°F), extreme  vibration or confined space make integral  mounting difficult or impractical. Industries such as pulp and paper and nuclear power have typically prefered to isolate valve mounted instruments from harsh environments. With the DVC6205, only the valve position feedback is mounted on the control valve, while the remainder of the digital valve controller can be mounted over 300 feet away in a less severe or more accessible environment.The remote valve mounted feedback unit utilizes the patented FIELDVUE linkage-less, non-contact feedback technology in which physical contact has been eliminated between the valve stem and the instrument. BillerudKorsnäs is a world-leading manufacturer of strong primary fiber-based packaging material in Sweden. The mill had previously used a magnetic flow meter to measure the flow of white liquor used in a pulp digester. This technology is frequently used for this type of application, however it was unsuccessful in this case because the flowmeter was occasionally subjected to a significant vacuum that partially collapsed the liner. This caused the magmeter to read a higher flow rate, resulting in too little alkali input which reduced digester performance. As the process could not be stopped outside the scheduled shutdown period, it was not possible to replace the meter immediately. The company was looking for a reliable solution to overcome these challenges and turned to Emerson. They installed the Rosemount 8800 Vortex flowmeter which are not typically considered for this application, as the fluid contains solids and fibers that would clog the crevices and ports common to traditional vortex flowmeters, impacting the meter performance. However, the unique design of the Rosemount 8800 Vortex eliminates crevices and ports and thus eliminates the risk of clogging. In addition, the 8800 is balanced so it is not affected by vibrations in the pipes that are typical in mill applications. The resulting flow measurement is accurate, stable and reliable. Finally the accurate flow measurements from Rosemount 8800 Vortex flowmeters translated to more consistent pulp quality and a lower cost per tonne of pulp saving the company millions of dollars. The mill also reduced maintenance costs considerably by eliminating the need to remove and clean the failed flowmeter. Curtiss-Wright Corporation is a diversified company that designs, manufactures and overhauls products for motion control and flow control applications. Quality data from Tecnomatix flows back to SAP for cost management evaluations. While Tecnomatix updates SAP, there is a cost saving which does not require data to be re-entered into SAP. Finally Embedded Computing has eliminated approximately 40 percent of the nonvalue added activities on the production floor since implementing this manufacturing execution system. The Tata Steel plant in Rotherham, South Yorkshire,UK manufactures speciality steels for industries with demanding applications in aerospace, oil and gas, power generation and steels for the industrial bearings industry. The steel plant production process involves hot steel billets which are cut by a gas cutter, generating scrap material that flakes off the billet. This process is driven by three 90 kW flume flush pumps which are used to flush water across the billet to carry this scrap away. However the process runs only two 90 kW flume flush pumps continuously with the third pump on standby. The filtration process removes the scrap and the filtered water is then pumped back into the process through a holding tank, termed as a clear well by two 75 kW filter feed pumps. All these pumps were originally driven by motors running direct-on-line, with no form of variable speed control. Tata Steel were looking for a safe, efficient solution to cut down on high energy consumption without compromising plant reliability. They got in touch with Halcyon Drives an ABB Drives Alliance member who in turn supplied, installed and commissioned three, 90 kW and two 75 kW ABB industrial drives to control the pumps. Rated at IP55 to stop the ingress of dust and moisture, the drives with in-built intelligent pump function, multi-pump control, ensured that the optimum number of pumps were running to satisfy the process demand, besides a backup pump would kick in online in the event of a pump failure. GoBiGas is a major biomass gasification plant for Göteborg Energi AB, Sweden. The plant is currently being built by Metso Power and is the first of its kind in the world. This plant converts biomass into renewable biomethane gas, using the existing natural gas grid for distribution. GoBiGas focuses on producing biomethane through gasification of biofuels and forest residues. The gasification system, together with the subsequent methanation and gas up-grading system, will produce high-calorific gas, biomethane, for distribution in the existing gas grid. GoBigas were looking to maximize process and operational reliability in addition to high production efficiency of the plant. They turned to Metso to supply the state-of-the-art control and on-off valves together with intelligent and safety valve controllers for both the gasification and the Methanation part of the GoBiGas project. Metso valve solutions with their intelligent valve controllers featuring performance diagnostics and improved diagnostics data resulted in improved plant safety and minimizing the operational and maintenance costs of the valves. Metso supplied Finetrol eccentric rotary plug control valve, Butterfly valves, Neles RotaryGlobe valves, Segment and Ball valves, 145 intelligent controllers Neles ND9100 and about 60 new generation safety valve controllers Neles ValvGuardTM VG9000. Micro Inks Ltd, the largest supplier of printing inks to the newspaper industry in India with a 70% market share was looking to automate one of their plants that manufactures resins and varnishes. They assigned the task to their systems integrator M/s Artee flow controls to work around the challenges of boosting plant efficiency, reliability and improving safety standards. In seeking to control an exothermic process, it required a system that would allow precise control of the process. It also required a solution that was scalable to allow for future expansion. Finally, it wanted a web-based solution that would allow users throughout the business to view key information on different applications.
Despite previous projects relying on competitors’ solutions, MIL agreed to Artee Flow Control’s proposal of a Honeywell system for the project.The system proposed was based on Honeywell’s HC900 Hybrid Controller, its advanced process and logic solution Experion HS. Honeywell’s solution based on its Experion PKS DCS tailored to the needs of small to medium-sized automation systems and eServer, which uses distributed system architecture (DSA) to provide web-based access to the Experion system. Since the HC900 is available in three rack sizes and three CPU performance levels, it can handle a wide range of automation requirements. While facilitating precise control of the exothermic process, its features mirror 
those of the DCS, making it easy to use for operators, engineers and maintenance crews. Based in Gemona del Friuli,Italy, MORE s.r.l.supplies a wide range of technologies and auxiliary equipment for electric arc furnaces used in the steel-making industry. The accurate measurement of oxygen is critical in the steelmaking process. Too much oxygen causes over-oxidation (decarburization), which requires expensive re-work to obtain steel of suitable quality.Too little oxygen, on the other hand, slows production. The application therefore demands measurement devices that enable accurate control of the injector feed oxygen-fuel ratio. MORE had been using differential pressure (DP) flow meters to measure the oxygen flow in its electric arc furnaces with little success to meet customers demand for even more accurate control, as well as changing process requirements. MORE decided to implement Emersons Rosemount vortex technology. Rosemount 8800 Vortex flowmeters feature a unique design that addresses the limitations of traditional vortex flow meters. Its signal filtering (Adaptive Digital Signal Processing-ADSP) and a mass-balanced sensor design maximize measurement reliability and eliminate the impact of vibrations on measurement accuracy. In addition, to meeting customer demands for greater flexibility in their furnace installations, the 25:1 rangeability of the 8800 helps to optimize gas heaters, providing greater opportunities to vary the characteristics of the steel for different applications. The SITRANS FUT 1010 liquid and gas flow meter from Siemens is designed to suit diverse applications across the liquid and gas hydrocarbon industries. Adria-Wien Pipeline GmbH (AWP) an austrian company has upgraded their custody-transfer measurement on the Adria-Wien pipeline in Austria by replacing existing turbine flowmeters with Micro Motion ELITE High Capacity Coriolis flowmeters from Emerson Process Management. Faced by serious concerns over reliability and maintenance of turbine meters the management at AWP shifted their focus on using the latest technologies in their plants and automation. The Adria–Wien pipeline carries crude oil from the Transalpine pipeline at the Italian-Austrian border to the Schwechat refinery near Vienna, Austria. Emerson Process Management supplied two Micro Motion ELITE High Capacity flowmeters with multivariable digital transmitters. The flowmeters were added to the refinery infeed lines in a parallel arrangement that allowed them to be installed individually without interrupting the flow of crude oil. Data from the Coriolis flowmeters and temperature transmitters are communicated to the existing host system using an RS485 Modbus connection.
