Ausiello: As EP Julie Plec notes, “Nobody knows the truth” about his resurrection — specifically, that Bonnie essentially sacrificed her life for his. As a result, “There’s going to be some explaining to do and it’s not necessarily going to make his return to his old life very easy.”

Question: Will Claire Holt (Rebekah) appear in any Vampire Diaries episodes next fall? Or is she going straight to The Originals? —Justine
Ausiello: “We do have the ability to use Rebekah on either show in the beginning,” says Plec. ” We will see when we start writing how much of her we’ll see before she heads off to New Orleans.” One scenario has the new season of TVD picking up at the tail end of Rebekah and Matt’s European vacation. “When we get back, we might see [them] still on their trip,” shares Plec, adding, “When Matt gets back to Mystic Falls, his whole world will have changed. I can’t wait to see what comes out of that adventure and how he re-adapts to life at Mystic Grill.”

Unlike all the other entries this year, we’ve already seen an episode of The Originals since The CW tested it out with a backdoor pilot episode of TVD. Not only did the familiar faces dazzle in this new setting, but Charles Michael Davis is a star-in-the-making and a ferocious foe for Klaus to tangle with.

How much fun have you had on The Vampire Diaries this season, and how surprising is the direction the character has gone in?

DANIEL GILLIES: It’s been really fun. It’s amazing that I’m still around within the series with the fatality rate on the show. One can’t be too comfortable. I’m blessed that I’m still a participant in a show that I love with a family of creators that I love. Am I surprised at the direction? The answer is no. I had done very few episodes before Julie [Plec] started talking about doing the spin-off. It’s been in the works for awhile. Honestly, about two years ago, I knew about the spin-off. So, I wasn’t surprised that the idea was followed through because when Julie Plec gets an idea, it’s going to come to fruition because she’s just so damn determined and unyielding. But that said, the manifestation of it happening as quickly as it did, two years is not a very long time from conception to actualization. I thought this might be something that happened literally in 2015, or something. I didn’t imagine it would be so immediate.
