Join us each week as we take a film, book or game and talk about it for about half an hour. This week we are playing a game called Quarriors!, which has a rather scary 130 dice.

With more dice than you can feasibly throw in an evening and artwork and a name that makes it look like the game is for children we approached Quarriors! with more than a little trepidation. Listen as we play through our second ever game and try to work out if the game is worth playing and, if so, has the depth needed for repeated plays.

This week we have braved our way out into the great outdoors and uncharacteristically warm March weather for an afternoon of searching for hidden ice cream tubs, otherwise known as Geocaching.

Occasionally it’s good to leave the safety of the studio for our podcasts and so we hopped in a car and drove to Horsell Common, site of the Martial landings in The War of the Worlds (just to keep it even more geeky) with iPhone and pen in hand. We then roamed around the fields following an arrow on the iPhone and trying to hunt out hidden boxes while avoiding the strange looks of everybody else out walking dogs and riding horses. It’s like a treasure hunt without getting rich at the end.

This week we have watched Lynne Ramsey’s film We Need To Talk About Kevin, the adaptation of the book of the same name.

We Need To Talk About Kevin is a film about a mother (Tilda Swinton) whose son (Ezra Miller) has done something so bad that the whole town hates her and through a series of flashbacks we get to see her relationship with her son as he grows up. This really isn’t a happy film and makes you feel quite uncomfortable as you watch it due to some excellent performances and direction, and at the end of the day it’s as much a psychological horror film as anything else.

Is this a film deserving of the awards it has been given or a film so bleak that shouldn’t have been made? Listen as we try to decide.

This week we are playing The Mines of Moria, Games Workshop’s starter set for their tabletop Lord of the Rings tabletop miniature game.

The Lord of the Rings is the giant of fantasy literature, and any chance to explore Middle Earth more is always welcome so we’ve grabbed a copy of The Mines of Moria, which is Games Workshop’s starter set for their much larger Lord of the Rings game.

The Lord of the Rings has been a controversial product for Games Workshop with many people complaining that it pulled resources away from their main games in favour of cashing in on the releases of the films, and others complaining that the rules are too dumbed down and it’s aimed at kids. Others have a different view and consider the game system to be the best that Games Workshop produce with a streamlined set of rules that leads to fast play. Listen to us as we attempt to find out if the game is fun and whether the starter set is a good game in its own right.

In a slight departure from our normal format, and because the game is quite short to play considering it’s a tabletop game, we’ve recorded most of the game so over the next hour and a bit you can hear every mistake, bad joke and dice roll that we make. Please let us know if it’s something you like or never want us to do again as it’s a bit of an experiment.

Small World is a game about civilisations rising and declining and the users of Board Game Geek really like it. Initially we were rather wary of the sheer number of cardboard counters involved, so many in fact that it took a whole evening to press them out of their sheets, but after a few games we got our heads around some interesting mechanics.

There’s even an iPad version if you want to be all modern.
