Italian Day on the Drive

The Drive is the epicentre of Italian culture in the city, and this fest is the largest one-day cultural street festival in Vancouver with a 14 block party. Doors Open Richmond

Richmond’s Doors Open Richmond event is bringing over 40 cultural, historical, and heritage sites to life, completely free, with special events happening across the city.

Some highlights include a journaling workshop at Richmond Public Library led by poet Selina Boan (a lovely nod to National Indigenous History Month), a behind-the-scenes tour of Richmond City Hall, and a heritage talk at the restored Britannia Shipyard building. Taking the family for a day at Capilano Suspension Bridge? From June 6 to July 19, Canyon Kick-Off adds soccer-themed fun—games, activities, photo opps—with regular park admission. There aren’t any match screenings, but it’s a nice bonus on your outing.

Soccer & Technology From the FIFA Museum at Science World, Vancouver

If your kids love soccer, this one is a must. Science World is hosting Soccer & Technology from the FIFA Museu, its North American debut is running May 15 to September 7, 2026.

Five interactive zones take families behind the scenes of the game, covering everything from VAR technology to the connected sensor inside the official World Cup match ball. Kids can make real referee calls, explore stadium tech, and even submit ideas directly to FIFA.

There’s also a special Canadian showcase featuring Christine Sinclair’s Olympic gold medal jersey and the match ball from Alphonso Davies’ historic first men’s World Cup goal for Canada.

Theatresports: Totally Ref’d Up at The Improv Centre, Granville Island, Vancouver

If your gang likes to laugh, this is for you. Improv comedians go head-to-head, riffing on soccer themes and audience suggestions. Red cards from the referee keep it lively. Shows run Friday and Saturday evenings from June 12 to July 18. Buy tickets ahead, it makes a great night out for adults or older kids with a sense of humour.

Tips for Taking the Kids

A few things can make your day way easier:

• Show up early for big games—Canada and USA matches especially. Get there 30 to 45 minutes before kickoff to snag a good spot.
• Dress for anything. This is Vancouver, after all—a sunny afternoon can turn breezy fast.
• Bring your own snacks and water. Food trucks are great, but lines are no joke, and nothing derails the mood like a hangry kid during penalty shots.
• Portable chairs or a blanket = total lifesaver for outdoor screens, especially with little ones.
• Double-check the match schedule. Not every spot is showing every game, so make sure yours is on before you wrangle everyone out the door.
• Go with the flow and soak it up. These events are buzzing. Kids pick up on the hype, and even non-soccer fans get swept up. A World Cup at home doesn’t come around often. Enjoy every crazy, memorable minute.

• Granville Island Ferry is the most fun option, especially for kids. The little aquabus is a mini adventure before the festival even starts. Kids absolutely love it.

With over a dozen hands-on art stations, there is something for every age from toddlers to tweens. New this year, the Sutcliffe Stage brings a live performance space right inside the Activity Village featuring music, dance, and pop-up performances throughout the day. What is the mission and philosophy of your summer camp, and how does it align with Vancouver parents’ needs?

The Vancouver Independent School for Science and Technology offers STEM and Humanities camps designed for students aged 8-15. Our camps are designed and taught by award-winning teachers, and are based on hands-on activities to keep participants engaged. At VISST, cultivating curiosity, exploring different topics and having fun are explicit goals of our programs. All camps are taught at our beautiful, light filled school, in the heart of Vancouver at 1490 W. Broadway Street.

What sets your camp apart from others in the area?

We offer a lot of topics that are not typically taught in school. Our camps are designed with a thoughtful focus on 21st century science and technology and critical thinking skills with a curriculum created and communicated so that students care. A comment we often get from parents and students is “you camps are different”.

Can you provide an overview of the activities and programs your camp offers during summer camp, and how they contribute to children’s development?

Week long, half- and full-day camps with topics ranging from artificial intelligence, data science to coding, science, engineering, mathematics, game design, debate and public speaking and much more. There is something exciting for everyone. They are designed so that students can make deep observations, explore different ways of thinking, develop creativity, work with peers, and discover the changing world around them.

Top Summer Camps in Vancouver: Science World

What is the mission and philosophy of your summer camp, and how does it align with Vancouver parents’ needs?

Science World’s mission has always been about igniting wonder, and their camps are built around that same idea. This year they’re expanding into three different camp formats: the classic in-dome Science World camps that families already love, brand-new Field Science camps where kids explore outdoors as real-life field scientists, and Surrey Pop-Up camps that bring Science World programming to Surrey for the very first time.

That last one is a big deal for Surrey families who’ve wanted access to this kind of quality programming without the commute. And for parents who’ve been asking for more outdoor education options, the Field Science camps are a direct answer to that. Kids get hands-on STEAM learning while actually connecting with nature through ecological investigations.

What sets your camp apart from others in the area?

Honestly? The people and the place. Science World’s camp team is made up of actual scientists, teachers, performers, and educators. These are people who genuinely love what they do and know how to make science feel alive for kids.

And then there’s the dome itself. There’s something about being in that iconic space that makes kids feel like anything is possible. Science World describes it as a place where campers “wonder, create, tinker and go on incredible adventures,” and from what I’ve heard from parents who’ve sent their kids, that tracks completely.

They also put real emphasis on being a welcoming, inclusive space. Every kid comes from somewhere different, and Science World works to meet kids where they are and build a community out of all those different perspectives. That matters a lot to me as a parent.

Can you provide an overview of the activities and programs your camp offers during summer camp, and how they contribute to children’s development?

Each day is built around a different core idea within the camp theme, with hands-on STEAM labs running throughout. Past campers have built rockets, engineered structures, created circuits, and tackled design challenges. This summer, the in-dome camp theme is “Amazing Humans,” which sounds like it could spark some really great conversations at home.

The Field Science camps combine outdoor ecosystem investigations with indoor hands-on labs, a mix of fresh air and focused learning. Surrey campers get STEAM workshops plus a full-day field trip to Science World itself.

What I appreciate most is that the programs are designed for different age groups, so the activities are actually at the right level, not too easy and not overwhelming. Through all of it, kids are building problem-solving skills, making new friends, and picking up the confidence that comes from figuring something out with their own hands.

Share success stories or testimonials from previous participants and their parents. How have children benefited from your camp?

The numbers here are hard to ignore. In a survey of 581 caregivers after last summer’s camps, 97% said their child enjoyed attending, and 94% said their child would want to come back. That’s not a fluke, that’s a pattern.

Parents have talked about how welcoming the staff were, both to their kids and to them. One parent wrote that the team was “genuinely awesome, kind to me and to my child, very welcoming.” Many families have made Science Camps an annual tradition, booking again every year and recommending it to friends.

As for the kids themselves? They said it best. Feedback cards included notes like “Best Camp Ever!” and one camper, when asked what activity they’d want to do next time, wrote simply: “All of them.”

Beyond the fun, 97% of parents confirmed their child learned something new. Kids leave with stronger curiosity, better problem-solving habits, real friendships, and the feeling that science is something that belongs to them.

This week, Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV) is spotlighting something important: their free Victim Support Services and Trauma Counselling programs, available across Metro Vancouver, New Westminster, Richmond, and Burnaby.

You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone

For over 40 years, FSGV has been walking alongside survivors of violence, abuse, and exploitation. What sets their approach apart is that they treat survivors as the experts in their own lives — not there to hand out a checklist, but to offer steady support as each person figures out what comes next.

That kind of trust-based care is what actually helps people heal.

What FSGV Actually Offers (And It’s Free)

Their Victim Support Services help people dealing with intimate partner violence, elder abuse, family violence, and exploitation. That includes emotional support, safety planning, guidance through the justice system, and connections to community resources that many people don’t even know exist.

Their Trauma Counselling serves kids, teens, adults, and seniors — with age-appropriate, therapeutic support focused on building resilience and reclaiming a sense of stability. Whether it’s a child processing something scary or an adult working to rebuild their confidence, the program meets people where they are.

And all of it is free.

The Numbers That Say Everything

The 2025 numbers from FSGV speak for themselves:

• They walked alongside survivors for 15,000 hours
• They supported more than 1,000 survivors of high-risk violence
• 43% of trauma counselling clients were under 25 years old
• On average, they support each person for 4 years

That last one is worth sitting with. Four years. This isn’t a one-time referral — it’s a real, ongoing relationship.
