There’s also a free child car seat safety clinic run by RCMP and BCAA, which is genuinely useful if you’ve been meaning to get that checked. Educational booths and giveaways round it out.

The Harrison Tulip Festival

If you’ve been looking for an excuse to get out of the city before summer officially hits, consider this your sign. The Whistler Children’s Festival returns May 15 to 17, 2026, and this year’s lineup is genuinely worth planning a whole weekend around.

For the uninitiated: this is Whistler’s longest-running festival and Arts Whistler’s biggest annual event, now celebrating its 43rd year. That’s the kind of track record that tells you something. It keeps coming back because families keep coming back.

What’s New This Year

The festival is getting a bit of a refresh for 2026, and the changes are good ones. It’s moving to a more centralized layout around Florence Petersen Park, Whistler Olympic Plaza, and the Maury Young Arts Centre, which means less walking back and forth and more time actually doing things.

New this year: a Bratz Biz market, where local youth artisans sell their own handmade arts and crafts at Whistler Olympic Plaza. It’s sweet, it’s unexpected, and your kids will probably spend their allowance there. Also new is a Friday night pajama movie to kick off the weekend. This year they’re screening Zootopia 2, which honestly sounds like the perfect low-key arrival night if you’re driving up after school.

The Acts You’ll Actually Want To See

This year’s lineup leans into creativity and inclusion in a way that feels really thoughtful, not just checkbox-y.

• Glamerly is one of the headline acts, described as a gender-creative dress-up party for families. It’s joyful, expressive, and the kind of show where your kid might walk in shy and walk out in full costume ready to take on the world.
• Powwow Mash-UP celebrates Indigenous culture through Powwow and hoop dance, and it’s exactly the kind of live performance that sticks with kids long after the weekend is over.

• Yuki the Juggler is an award-winning Japanese Canadian circus performer who brings serious skill and playful energy to the stage. Equal parts impressive and delightful.

Beyond the main acts, there will be more free roving entertainment and craft stations than ever before scattered throughout the festival grounds, which means even if you didn’t book every ticketed workshop, there’s still plenty happening around you.

A Festival That’s Actually Built For All Families

This year the festival is making a real effort to be welcoming for everyone, and the details matter. There will be a designated space for neurodivergent kids to play, create, and decompress in a quieter environment. The entire festival footprint is wheelchair and stroller accessible.

There are also Helping Hands tickets available for purchase, which send one adult and one child to a show they might not otherwise have the chance to attend. A lovely thing to do if you’re in a position to.

Before You Book

Ticketed workshops and performances sell out ahead of time, so get in early. Each show also has recommended age ranges listed, so take a few minutes to check those before finalizing your picks. Nobody wants to sit through a puppet show designed for two-year-olds when you’ve got a nine year old who’s already bored.

Make it a full weekend in Whistler

Here’s the thing about driving two hours to Whistler: just stay. May in Whistler is genuinely underrated. The days are getting longer, the snow is mostly gone from the Village, and there’s a ridiculous amount to do outside the festival itself.

We’re talking hiking, biking, golf, ziplining, whitewater rafting, and UTV tours. This one is worth the drive. The Harrison Tulip Festival is 45 acres, 14 million blooms, and 150 tulip varieties across the fields. As Canada’s largest tulip festival, this year is extra special as it marks the Onos family’s 20th annual festival.

Beyond the flowers, there is a lot to do including the Night Garden on select evenings, a Bloom Bar to make your own bouquet, sunrise yoga in the fields, floral workshops, food trucks, and a new Dutch street food wagon.

Is Your Child Showing These Signs?

With spring already here and summer approaching, this can be a good time to take a closer look at your child’s progress in reading and writing.

If your child avoids reading on their own, makes frequent errors when reading aloud, struggles with spelling, or says they “don’t like” to read, pay attention. These are signs that your child needs a closer look.

For some students, learning to read and spell seems to come naturally, while for others it can feel confusing and frustrating. Becoming a strong reader and speller requires developing several underlying “building blocks.” Difficulties with these foundational skills are not always obvious, but challenges with reading and spelling often are.

Why Phonics Instruction Matters

Understanding the sounds (phonemes) in spoken words and how those sounds are represented in written English forms one of the most important building blocks of reading. English contains 44 phonemes but only 26 letters to represent them, which means students must learn how sounds and spellings connect. This is why phonics instruction plays an important role in learning to read.

There are two general approaches to phonics instruction. The most common introduces a letter first and teaches that the letter “makes” or “says” a sound. This is often called a “print-to-speech” approach. Because English spelling is complex, this method can lead to a long list of rules, many of which are inconsistent and difficult for students to apply.

Researchers and educators recognize the “speech-to-print” approach as a more effective method. In this model, students start with the sounds they already know from spoken language and then learn how to spell those sounds using letters or letter combinations. This approach better reflects how language works and can make reading and spelling feel more logical and manageable.

What Parents Can Do

Helping struggling readers and spellers strengthen these foundational skills requires careful assessment and specialized instruction. While parents can learn about these concepts, delivering an effective program takes training and experience.

There’s a rhythm to it. Less rigid schedules, more “what can we do that gets everyone out the door without a meltdown?”

Families looking for a bit of challenge and a fun, festival-like atmosphere are landing on something that brings excitement, movement and memories together: fun runs.

Not the intimidating, high-performance kind, but the stroller-friendly, costume-welcoming, walk-if-you-want-to version that feels more like a community event than a competition.

For many Vancouver families, weekends aren’t about getting more done. They’re about finding something they can do together that actually works for everyone.

A Shift Toward Connection

Part of the appeal is how different these events feel from traditional activities.

There’s no season-long commitment. No pressure to keep up. No expectation that kids will “perform.” Instead, you show up, you participate in whatever way works for your family, and you leave feeling like you did something together.

“You’ll see everything from competitive runners to families with strollers to kids just soaking it all in,” says fitness instructor, event participant and Vancouver Mom Shannon Sawicki. “It’s all about meeting people where they’re at, and that’s exactly what these events do. There’s space for everyone, and that’s what makes it feel so welcoming.”

That flexibility matters, especially for parents trying to balance busy schedules and varying energy levels.

“We’re seeing more families craving connection in ways that feel energizing, not like another thing on the to-do list,” Shannon adds. “This is movement that fits into real life. It doesn’t have to be perfect or structured—whether you train a little, a lot, or not at all, it still counts. It’s about showing up and sharing the experience.”

It’s Not (Just) about Fitness

Of course, there is movement involved but that’s not the main point. 

For many families, fun runs offer a version of “fitness” that doesn’t come with pressure or guilt.

“When movement is tied to something positive, like music, costumes, or taking on a challenge together, it becomes something kids really enjoy,” says Jenn Wint, recreational jogger, Vancouver Mom and fun run enthusiast. “It’s been so fun to see the kid’s confidence and running ability improve as we’ve done more and more fun runs. There’s no pressure as it’s a fun day no matter what the result. Everyone gets a medal.”

That distinction is important. Instead of pushing structured routines or rigid goals, events like these help normalize movement in a way that feels natural.

“It’s about showing kids that being active can be social, flexible, fun and involve a range of abilities and competitiveness,” Jenn says. “That’s what builds their desire to make running part of their lifestyle year round. 

And for parents, that low-pressure approach is often the difference between something that sounds good in theory and something that actually happens.

The Moments Make the Memories

Talk to any parent who’s done a family fun run, and they’re probably not going to mention pace or distance. They’ll talk about the little moments throughout the event that made it memorable. 

The kid who didn’t want to start but ended up smiling at the finish. The mid-route snack break that turned into a highlight. The chocolate medial and snacks at the finish line or the inflatables at the photo booth. The moment everyone crossed together, running, walking, or some combination of both.

“There’s this really fun, contagious energy at the start line,” shares Shannon. “Kids are excited, parents are connecting, and no one is taking themselves too seriously. It feels more like a community celebration than a race. Leading the warm-up at the Big Pirate Run, we lean into that playful vibe, getting bodies moving with themed, lighthearted exercises so everyone feels ready and included.”

For Jenn, it’s those small, meaningful wins that stand out most. “My son and I have a tradition where we give one high five at the 1km marker and then add more high fives for each kilometre marker we pass. I love that jogging is a sport we can do together and both work on improving. He’s definitely getting faster than I am which is fun to see as well. I’m a lot more breathless at the finish line than I used to be!” 

These are the experiences that stick. Not because they’re big or polished, but because they’re shared.

“It’s those little moments that matter most,” Shannon agrees. “Trying something new, laughing at a costume, or crossing the finish line together, those are the wins. That’s what builds confidence, connection, and keeps families coming back.”

Why It Works for Vancouver Families

In a city like Vancouver, where being outside is part of everyday life, it’s easy to see why this kind of event fits.

You don’t have to overhaul your routine. A few times a year, you just swap out your usual park visit or weekend walk for something with a bit more energy, and a lot more atmosphere.

The next opportunity to get involved is the Big Easter Run at Jericho Beach Park.

Set right along the waterfront, it brings together everything families love about these events. There are options for everyone, from a 1–3 km Little Bunny Run or Walk (perfect for younger kids or newbies to fun runs), to 5 km and 10 km routes on flat, wide paths, for those who want to go a bit further. Walking is welcome across all distances and there’s cheers for everyone, which really takes the pressure off.

Every participant gets bunny ears, which sets the tone right away, playful, a little chaotic, and very kid-approved. Before the run even begins, DJ Rock ’n’ Beau leads a high-energy, kid-friendly warm-up that feels more like a dance party than a pre-race routine.

Afterward, there’s a kids’ egg hunt, music, and that finish-line moment families come for, complete with chocolate medals instead of the traditional kind. A sweet finish in every sense.

“You see kids light up when it feels like an event, not just an activity,” says Shannon. “There’s music, costumes, and this sense that everyone is there to have a good time. I know I do!”

For parents, that kind of environment makes saying yes a lot easier.

“When something is designed to be fun first, the movement just becomes part of it,” says Jenn. “It removes the pressure and makes it something the whole family can actually enjoy, no matter what level they’re at.”The Big Fun Run Series is also focused on paying it forward. The Big Easter Run supports KidSport BC, helping remove financial barriers so more kids can participate in sports, something that resonates with many local families.

A Different Kind of Finish Line

For families who are curious but unsure, fun runs offer a low-stakes way in. You don’t need to train. You don’t need to commit long-term. You don’t even need to run.

“You don’t have to be a runner,” says Shannon. “You just have to show up and be ready to move.”

And once you do, it’s easy to see why families keep coming back. It’s about getting outside, doing something together, and creating some fun memories with bunny ears, chocolate medals, high fives along the way and crossing the finish line side by side.

Check out the birdies at Reifel Bird Sanctuary

Nothing says Spring quite like getting up close and personal with baby chicks, goats and ducklings. MapleWood Farm in North Van makes for a charming outing as does Aldor Acres in Fort Langley.

This year my son celebrated his birthday with an archery tag party at 6Pack Indoor Beach Centre, and it turned out to be one of the easiest and most fun parties we’ve hosted.

What is Archery Tag?

For families who haven’t tried it yet, archery tag is a fast-paced game that combines elements of dodgeball, tag, and archery. Players use bows and foam-tipped arrows to aim at targets and tag opponents in team-based challenges that are safe, active, and seriously fun. It’s the kind of activity that gets kids moving, laughing, and working together while burning off a lot of energy.

The Staff Made All the Difference

What really stood out during our party was how incredible the staff were with the group. Managing 12 excited boys could easily feel chaotic, but the team at 6Pack handled it seamlessly. They did a fantastic job explaining the rules clearly, organizing the teams, and keeping everyone engaged between rounds. The games moved quickly, the kids stayed focused, and every single one of them left the court smiling (and a little sandy).

Easy Food, Happy Kids

Another thing that made the experience so smooth was the help we received from Alex at Court 6 Café, the on-site café. Hosting a birthday party can sometimes feel like juggling a dozen details, but Alex made the food portion effortless. One thoughtful touch I especially appreciated was that the water bottles were numbered for each child—such a simple idea, but incredibly helpful when you have a group of kids trying to figure out which drink is theirs.

And the food? The pizza was delicious and there was more than enough to satisfy 12 hungry boys after running around on the sand courts.

A Real Screen-Free Win

Another thing I loved about this activity is that it naturally pulls kids away from screens and electronics. So many activities today revolve around devices, but archery tag gets kids fully engaged in the moment—running, strategizing, and cheering each other on. Archery is also a sport many kids don’t typically get exposure to, which makes this a fun, low-pressure way to try something new. Because it’s set up as a game rather than a formal lesson, kids can experiment, learn quickly, and just enjoy the experience without worrying about being “good” at it.
