BC Halal Food Fest

Bring the whole crew to Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre in Surrey this weekend, July 24 to 26, for three days of halal eats, local shopping, and family fun. With over 50 food vendors and another 50-plus market stalls, plus carnival rides and live entertainment running all weekend, it’s an easy way to fill an afternoon (or three). Best part: it’s completely free to get in. 

Chiquitzin Kids Fiesta

If you’re stuck on weekend plans, tomorrow’s the day to check out this free cultural mashup happening around Metro Vancouver, where Latin American and French traditions collide in the best way. Think live music, dance performances, theatre and storytelling, plus a magic show that’ll have the little ones’ jaws on the floor. There’s also arts and crafts, inflatables, face painting, and a photo booth for all those “proof we left the house” pics. My favourite part? Kids get a Chiquitzin passport to stamp along the way, with prizes and surprises hidden throughout the day. It’s the kind of low-effort, high-fun outing that fills a whole afternoon without you having to plan a thing.

Music with Marnie & Lightsaber show

Date: July 25, 2026
Location: KidsMarket on Granville Island

Music with Marnie — Free family show at 12:15pm right at Granville Island’s Kids Market. Marnie and her band bring the high-energy, up-on-your-feet tunes that turn any afternoon into a dance party, complete with puppets and costumed characters keeping the kids hooked from song one.

Lightsaber Show with Saber Guild Alderaan Temple — Two free shows at 12:00pm and 1:30pm bring epic lightsaber battles to life for Jedi, Padawans, and Sith of every age. Stick around after each performance for a meet-and-greet and photo op with the characters. May the Force be with you.

BC Pride Festival

Head to Civic Square for Burnaby’s ninth annual Pride celebration, a free, family-friendly afternoon honouring the diversity of Burnaby’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Uptown Summer Live Series

Dates: June 27 – September 13, 2026
Location: Uptown New Westminister (Various Locations)

Free, family-friendly, and running every Saturday and Sunday until September 13, Uptown Live turns New West into one big open-air stage with busker-style performances popping up across plazas, patios, and street corners all summer. No tickets, no cover, just wander the neighbourhood and let the music find you. Rain or shine, the show goes on.

Summer Light in English Bay

Date: July 31, 2026
Location: English Bay, Vancouver

Time: The fireworks are expected to launch after dusk (around 10pm)

English Bay Beach lights up with a free, one-night fireworks show, no tickets needed. It falls on the closing weekend of Vancouver Pride and kicks off the BC Day long weekend, so expect big crowds and plan accordingly: walk, bike, or take transit if you can, since parking will be tight and several nearby lots will be closed. Grab a spot on the sand early, pack a blanket and snacks, and settle in for a night sky full of colour with the kids.

Summer in Langley City

Warmer, longer days mean live music under rainbow umbrellas, Shakespeare in the park, and juicy berries from the farmers market. Here’s what’s still on the calendar this summer, and it’s all free and family-friendly.

• Langley Community Farmers Market — Fresh berries, food trucks, and live music from over 30 vendors, every Wednesday through August 26, 5:30–8:30pm at Douglas Park.

Oval Community Day

Free and family-friendly, this all-day celebration of sport and fitness takes over the Richmond Olympic Oval. Kids can tackle inflatable obstacle courses (including a 90-foot challenge and a bungee run), try sports like fencing, foosball, and wheelchair basketball, and get their face painted between snacks from Kona Ice and Tap & Snack’s BBQ. PNE Summer Night Concerts: Summer’s Hottest Stage

In this Q&A, Emily shares how Dine Wilder came to life, what home looks like with two little boys underfoot, and what motherhood has taught her about showing up as her full, imperfect self.

Describe your business or career role.

I’m a lifelong gatherer of humans, a storyteller, and the founder of Dine Wilder, a company born from a simple belief: life is better when we stop rushing through it and start sitting around the table together.

What began as a long-table dinner series has evolved into a movement. I’m wildly passionate about championing small business owners, creating opportunities for collaboration, and connecting people who may never have crossed paths otherwise.

Now, 22 months in, with a newly launched online membership called The Room, Dine Wilder has grown into a community built around dinners, retreats, panels, and FEAST, my signature gathering in Squamish on October 25th. It’s an experience unlike anything you’ve likely attended before, combining the inspiration of a conference with the warmth and connection of a dinner party. Food for the mind, celebrating ambition, storytelling, and the magic that happens when the right people are in the same room.

I’ve built my life and my business around one belief: the magic happens when we lean into the unknown, jump before we’re ready, and move with our hearts more than our heads. Less logic, more action. Less waiting for the perfect moment, more trusting ourselves enough to create it.

What makes you a Vancouver Mom to follow?

I think what sets me apart is that I’m constantly choosing the less obvious path.

I’m a mom of two boys, a founder, a storyteller, and someone who has built a life around saying “why not?” more often than “why me?” I’ve never been particularly interested in fitting into a neat little box. I believe we can be ambitious and deeply present, creative and practical, a mother and a woman with dreams that exist outside of motherhood.

I’m passionate about showing up as my full, imperfect self with overflowing childlike excitement, and reminding other women that they don’t have to shrink themselves to create a beautiful life. Whether I’m gathering hundreds of people around a table, cheering on another small business owner, or doing school drop-off in a pair of heels while dreaming up my next wild idea, I hope to inspire others to trust themselves, take the leap, and create a life that feels like theirs.

Tell us about your family.

Our family is made up of my husband, Dean, who owns Squamish Coastal Contracting Inc., our two boys, Jack Wilder (5) and Wilf Parker (3), better known as Wilfy, and me.

Jack unknowingly became the inspiration behind the entire Wilder brand. When he was just 10 weeks old, I co-founded Graze Wilder, and that one little word, Wilder, has stayed with us ever since. It has grown alongside our family and now lives on through Dine Wilder, The Room, FEAST, and everything I create.

Life in our house is loud, full of muddy shoes by the front door, endless snack requests, dance parties in the living room, and Yorkshire puddings on a Sunday. You can take the girl out of Yorkshire, but she’ll never let her Yorkshire puds go. Life feels like it’s overflowing at the seams in the best possible way.

My mom always told me that home isn’t a place, it’s a feeling you create wherever your feet are. I often pinch myself that our home in Squamish has become exactly that for so many other people too. Friends, family, neighbours, and complete strangers know the kettle is always on, the door is always open, and there’s probably a charcuterie platter about to be whipped up.

What are your go-to activities, places, or hidden gems in Metro Vancouver that you and your family love?

I love being taken anywhere I’ve never been before. There’s something so exciting about discovering a new place, having an unexpected conversation, and finding little gems you’d never stumble across if you stayed on the same path.

For work, I love spending time at the Fairmont Pacific Rim. There’s such an incredible energy there, and it feels like every conversation I have somehow sparks a little bit of magic. I love meetings at Water St. Café, dinners at Hy’s or Black+Blue, and wandering through the beautiful brick streets and independent stores of Gastown because it gives me a little taste of the UK.

With the boys, you’ll often find us at Science World, the Vancouver Aquarium, exploring West Vancouver, grabbing a coffee at Crema, or spending slow afternoons at Ambleside and the beaches. Weekends are often spent at Whytecliff Park, letting the boys explore while we soak up the views.

When my parents come to visit, they love taking the boys to Science World, the Aquarium, or Granville Island. I think that’s what I love most about Vancouver. There is always somewhere new to discover, no matter how long you’ve lived here.

What’s something motherhood has taught you about yourself?

Motherhood has taught me that there is no arrival point. It’s one long evolution, and just when you think you’ve found your rhythm, everything changes again. Becoming a mom changed me. Becoming a mom of two changed me all over again.

I used to think being a great mom meant being completely selfless. Looking back, I think I’d have felt even more like myself if I’d taken the occasional moment to refill my own cup. Now I know my boys need the fullest version of me.

I’m not a mom who follows all the rules or worries too much about the “shoulds.” I’d much rather say yes to watching the stars past bedtime, wearing pyjamas to the movies, or dancing to one more song in the kitchen. I want my boys to remember a childhood full of unexpected yeses, not things.

More than anything, I hope they grow up watching a mom who was brave enough to chase her dreams, kind enough to bring other people along with her, and never afraid to jump before she was ready.

A few things can make your day way easier:

• Dress for anything. This is Vancouver, after all—a sunny afternoon can turn breezy fast.
• Bring your own snacks and water. Food trucks are great, but lines are no joke, and nothing derails the mood like a hangry kid during penalty shots.
• Portable chairs or a blanket = total lifesaver for outdoor screens, especially with little ones.
• Double-check the match schedule. Not every spot is showing every game, so make sure yours is on before you wrangle everyone out the door.

Parking on Granville Island on a busy festival weekend can be a lot. Here are a few smarter ways to arrive:

• Free parking is available at the Lululemon Parkade on Saturday and Sunday. Check the location and parking details before you head out.
• Transit is always a solid option — SkyTrain to downtown and a short bus ride gets you there without the parking headache.
• Granville Island Ferry is the most fun option, especially for kids. The little aquabus is a mini adventure before the festival even starts. Kids absolutely love it.

Here is something a lot of families do not realize until they get there: your show ticket includes a free wristband to the Activity Village, and it is worth every minute.

With over a dozen hands-on art stations, there is something for every age from toddlers to tweens. New this year, the Sutcliffe Stage brings a live performance space right inside the Activity Village featuring music, dance, and pop-up performances throughout the day. What is the mission and philosophy of your summer camp, and how does it align with Vancouver parents’ needs?

The Vancouver Independent School for Science and Technology offers STEM and Humanities camps designed for students aged 8-15. Our camps are designed and taught by award-winning teachers, and are based on hands-on activities to keep participants engaged. At VISST, cultivating curiosity, exploring different topics and having fun are explicit goals of our programs. All camps are taught at our beautiful, light filled school, in the heart of Vancouver at 1490 W. Broadway Street.

What sets your camp apart from others in the area?

We offer a lot of topics that are not typically taught in school. Our camps are designed with a thoughtful focus on 21st century science and technology and critical thinking skills with a curriculum created and communicated so that students care. A comment we often get from parents and students is “you camps are different”.

Can you provide an overview of the activities and programs your camp offers during summer camp, and how they contribute to children’s development?

Week long, half- and full-day camps with topics ranging from artificial intelligence, data science to coding, science, engineering, mathematics, game design, debate and public speaking and much more. There is something exciting for everyone. They are designed so that students can make deep observations, explore different ways of thinking, develop creativity, work with peers, and discover the changing world around them.

What is the mission and philosophy of your summer camp, and how does it align with Vancouver parents’ needs?

Science World’s mission has always been about igniting wonder, and their camps are built around that same idea. This year they’re expanding into three different camp formats: the classic in-dome Science World camps that families already love, brand-new Field Science camps where kids explore outdoors as real-life field scientists, and Surrey Pop-Up camps that bring Science World programming to Surrey for the very first time.

That last one is a big deal for Surrey families who’ve wanted access to this kind of quality programming without the commute. And for parents who’ve been asking for more outdoor education options, the Field Science camps are a direct answer to that. Kids get hands-on STEAM learning while actually connecting with nature through ecological investigations.

What sets your camp apart from others in the area?

Honestly? The people and the place. Science World’s camp team is made up of actual scientists, teachers, performers, and educators. These are people who genuinely love what they do and know how to make science feel alive for kids.

And then there’s the dome itself. There’s something about being in that iconic space that makes kids feel like anything is possible. Science World describes it as a place where campers “wonder, create, tinker and go on incredible adventures,” and from what I’ve heard from parents who’ve sent their kids, that tracks completely.

They also put real emphasis on being a welcoming, inclusive space. Every kid comes from somewhere different, and Science World works to meet kids where they are and build a community out of all those different perspectives. That matters a lot to me as a parent.

Can you provide an overview of the activities and programs your camp offers during summer camp, and how they contribute to children’s development?

Each day is built around a different core idea within the camp theme, with hands-on STEAM labs running throughout. Past campers have built rockets, engineered structures, created circuits, and tackled design challenges. This summer, the in-dome camp theme is “Amazing Humans,” which sounds like it could spark some really great conversations at home.

The Field Science camps combine outdoor ecosystem investigations with indoor hands-on labs, a mix of fresh air and focused learning. Surrey campers get STEAM workshops plus a full-day field trip to Science World itself.

What I appreciate most is that the programs are designed for different age groups, so the activities are actually at the right level, not too easy and not overwhelming. Through all of it, kids are building problem-solving skills, making new friends, and picking up the confidence that comes from figuring something out with their own hands.

Share success stories or testimonials from previous participants and their parents. How have children benefited from your camp?

The numbers here are hard to ignore. In a survey of 581 caregivers after last summer’s camps, 97% said their child enjoyed attending, and 94% said their child would want to come back. That’s not a fluke, that’s a pattern.

Parents have talked about how welcoming the staff were, both to their kids and to them. One parent wrote that the team was “genuinely awesome, kind to me and to my child, very welcoming.” Many families have made Science Camps an annual tradition, booking again every year and recommending it to friends.

As for the kids themselves? They said it best. Feedback cards included notes like “Best Camp Ever!” and one camper, when asked what activity they’d want to do next time, wrote simply: “All of them.”

Beyond the fun, 97% of parents confirmed their child learned something new. Kids leave with stronger curiosity, better problem-solving habits, real friendships, and the feeling that science is something that belongs to them.
