Our time with you has been so much more than we ever imagined. You are such a delight and we can’t get over how smitten we are with you. You are 4 months and this month we have seen so many changes in you! You sit up, laugh, play, are silly and love to be NOSEY!   You are learning about the world around you. One of your favorite things to do is play with Papa and Leo. You love when Papa reads to you at night. He shares a Bible story with you while you try to eat the Bible. We pray together then Mama puts you to bed. You love to play in your crib before falling fast asleep. We have noticed one night on the video monitor that once you are ready to fall asleep you roll onto your side and you are OUT.

We can’t wait to continue to watch you grow!

Gray Stats: This wasn’t a dr month so we don’t have exact measurements for height and weight but boy has def grown this past month. 

Weight: 16lbs (home version of weighing ourselves w/ and w/o baby) Gained 1lb 14oz from last month. 

Height: 26.5 inches (we think- we did a rough measurement with a kicking baby) Grew 1 inch from last month 

Laughs, giggles, coos

Is silly and likes to play.

Eats his toes

Foods he has tried: avocado, sweet peas, green beans, and prunes. He favorite so far seems to be avocado & peas!

This past month sleeping has been better but it still isn’t consistent. We are back to waking up once a night instead of 3, but I probably just jinxed myself. YIKES!

is OBSESSED with Leo. Tries to get him, laughs at him, grunts at him and watches his every move.

Developed a “fake cough & grunt” to get our attention. It’s funny!

Didn’t cry at his 4 month shots- just gave us a look like what the heck was that?

He is so joyful and we feel so lucky to call him ours!

What is aperture? 

ap·er·ture  /?ap?r?CH?r/: an opening, hole or gap. 2). A space through which light passes in an optical or photographic instrument, esp. the variable opening by which light enters a camera.

Aperture is controlled by your lens and it determines how large or small the opening is to allow light to enter your camera! You see this on your camera as f/1.8, f/2.8, f/8, etc.

What is Depth of Field? It is when part of your camera is in focus and the other is blurred. The “front” part of your image is in focus while the background is blurry. 

When to use a small number/large aperture? Need more light, want your background to be out of focus with your subject in focus! 

When to use a large number/small aperture? group picture to ensure everyone is in focus if they are on different levels, you want more of your image in focus (subject/background), you have a LOT of light and you are overexposing your image due to letting too much light in. 

Examples: f/1.8 = the front plum package is in focus while the others and the background are out of focus. (the shutter speed was faster than the below images because the opening to allow light in was large, therefore it was a shorter shutter speed capture). f/3.5= the front plum package is in focus, the second plum package is in focus but the 3rd package and the background are still blurry. (the shutter speed was slower than the above image because the opening to allow light in was smaller and the camera needed more time to capture the light). f/8= the front plum package is in focus, as well as the 2nd and 3rd package. (the shutter speed was slower than the above image because the opening to allow light in was smaller and the camera needed more time to capture the light). 

Homework: 

Set up a few objects on your counter like I did above.
Set your aperture at a small number (large aperture) and work your way up your f/stops.
Upload your images to your computer and notice the differences.

You should see:

The smaller number (larger aperture = faster shutter speed, subject in focus others out of focus (shallow depth of field).
The larger number (smaller aperture = slower shutter speed, subject and background in focus (wider depth of field).
