Vlog #5: Exploring Downtown L.A. - Santee Alley, Banksy, 500 Days of Summer Bench

After spending the morning at the California Market Center for Unique L.A.'s "Local Love" event in Downtown L.A., I wanted to check out a few popular spots nearby.

First on my list, Santee Alley. Stylists on set are always name dropping this place, bragging about the designer knocks offs they found here and it's even been written about in fashion magazines.

Afterwards I checked out one of Banky's more recent pieces of graffiti artwork and I stop by the infamous bench from the movie 500 Days of Summer.

Downtown L.A. really has a lot to offer and with gas prices higher than my coffee habit, it's a great time to take public transportation like I did. So go for it - be a local explorer! It will cost you a whopping $3 round trip on the Metro plus you'll avoid paying for parking and sitting in hours of traffic. Don't worry, the money I saved taking public transportation I blew on coffee. Oops :)

Restaurant Review: Spencer's Houston, TX

While I was in Houston for the Halloween and Party Expo I had the pleasure of staying at the Hilton Americas. I love this hotel because it's attached to the convention center and it has a great lobby bar, decent gym, huge pool, jacuzzi and two delicious restaurants. After the first long day of work my boss took us to one of the restaurants downstairs, Spencer's.

The menu looked promising and the vibe was business meets intimate dinner pleasure. The hostess whisked us through their dimly lit bar and seated our group of 12 at an elegant table in the back. On the way there we passed a lovely glass room where a couple was dining in private. I'm pretty sure that dude is going to get lucky after his swanky dinner date reservation.

I know what you're thinking - the boss is buying, time to order steak! Well, I wasn't really in the mood for a heavy meal that late in the evening and I knew my group would order a variety of side dishes, since they are portioned for sharing here, so I opted for a salad.

Spinach Salad

I was a little worried that this salad would be boring but the dressing really made it pop. I enjoyed the texture contrasts between the fruit, nuts and leaves. Besides, goat cheese makes everything tastes fantastic.

What meal wouldn't be complete without dessert? We ordered one of everything they offered sweet wise to pass around the table for everyone sample. It was almost impossible for me to get this one picture before everyone ripped into these treats!

Grand Marnier Crème Brûlée

This perfectly, fire charred crème brûlée was pretty damn good but out of their six desserts the Chocolate Layer Cake was by far my favorite. It was like squeezing all my chocolate fantasies into a piece of greatness - I seriously scraped the plate clean. And yes, everyone made fun of me for it.

Halloween is my favorite holidays because it's not every day I can dress inappropriately and demand free candy from people. Lucky for me, one of my odd jobs is working as an in house model for a costume company. This is my third year attending the Halloween and Party Expo in Houston, Texas and just when I think I've seen it all these venders roll out something new each year.

Valentine's Treat: Ashton's Easy Stuffed Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Need a last minute quick and easy Valentine's Day dessert that will be sure to impress? I make chocolate covered strawberries every year but this year I made it with a little twist by stuffing them with my signature fruit dip which tastes similar to cheesecake.

Ashton's Easy Stuffed Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Here's what you'll need:

-Large Strawberries

-1 Bar of Cream Cheese (low fat will not blend as smoothly)

-Jar of Marshmallow Cream (small size)

-1 tablespoon of Vanilla Extract

-1 Bag of Melting Chocolate

-1 Bag of Melting White Chocolate

-Toothpicks (if you feel like wasting a couple bucks in the name of convenience)

-Ziploc Bag

Melting chocolate can be found at arts and crafts store like Michael's and select grocery stores during holidays. Do not use regular chocolate, it won't melt or harden the same.

Grab your strawberries and hallow out in the inside with a knife (as seen in the above picture). Be very careful when doing this, nobody wants to spend Valentine's Day in the E.R.

In a medium bowl start making your strawberry dip by adding the bar of cream cheese, jar of marshmallow cream and tablespoon of vanilla together. You can do this with a mixer or the savage way and stir by hand like I did. Blend until texture is smooth. For a more firm consistency, put this in the fridge for an hour afterwards.

Now in two separate bowls, add your melting chocolates and toss them in the microwave for about a minute or a tad more and stir until smooth. Be careful not to burn them like I did or the chocolate will end up with a crunchy texture. Oddly enough, I find it better that way.

Start stuffing your strawberries with the dip and level off the tops like I did in the above picture.

Toss strawberries into the bowl of melted chocolate and start rolling them until completely covered. This is a good time to use your toothpicks but I'm cheap and let's be honest, I would rather spend that money on coffee.

Fill a Ziploc bag with your white melting chocolate and cut a tiny whole in one corner. Now you can drizzle this deliciousness on to of your strawberries. Get creative; try decorating them with hearts or messages. Just remember, not everyone is an artist but your loved one will forgive your crappy artwork once they try these treats.

Place the finished strawberries in the fridge until the chocolate hardens and there you have it! My homemade Easy Stuffed Chocolate Covered Strawberries! OK, so they're not the most perfectly dipped berries but hey, I was under a time constraint.

Spicy Sourdough Grilled Cheese

I did the worst thing today, I went grocery shopping hungry. But triumph over tragedy, I managed to buy a few complete meals and avoided the boxed carb bloat fest snack aisles. I found some awesome specials at my favorite supermarket in Los Angeles, Fresh and Easy. If you haven't been there you should absolutely check it out! It's like a Trader Joe's but without cashiers. Since employee count is low the savings are passed down to shoppers. They also have a wide variety of their own Fresh and Easy brand foods sans artificial preservatives, colors or flavors.

An employee was marking down produce and baked goods while I was shopping and I got some steals that sparked my delicious dinner.

Spicy Sourdough Grilled Cheese with Tomato Soup

So here's how it all went down...

I found this Green Chile Sourdough Loaf for $0.82 (normally $3.29). I thought it would go well with the low fat Monterey Jack cheese I was buying today and the Pepper Jack cheese I already had in my fridge.

Fresh and easy makes delicious soups and salsa's which, though I would prefer homemade, are a quick solution for those busy work weeks.

I was already buying salsa to top my eggs for breakfast and I adore the Fresh and Easy Tomato Basil Soup so I came up with a grilled cheese that my boyfriend couldn't stop raving about.

Spicy Sourdough Grilled Cheese Ingredients:

-Green Chile Sourdough Loaf (or any spicy loaf your local grocer sells)

-Pepper Jack Cheese (or your favorite spicy cheese)

-Monterey Jack Cheese (I buy low fat, gotta watch my girlish figure ;)

-Medium to Hot Salsa (for topping)

-Tomato Soup (canned or homemade)

-Black Peppercorn

Instructions:

Grease pan with real butter or cooking spray. Get two slices of your desired bread, stuff them with your spicy cheeses and lightly rub a little butter on each side before placing them in your skillet. Each time I flipped my sandwiches over, to cook them evenly, I would grind a pinch of my black peppercorn onto the bread. Cook until cheese is melted and the bread is lightly browned. Cut grilled cheese in half for easy eating and dipping then top each piece with salsa. Heat up a bowl tomato soup and wallah - cheesy goodness!

Awesome Options:

-Try adding grated Parmesan cheese to the outside of your sandwich when you flip it in your skillet. It makes a nice, crunchy texture and really adds to the flavor.

-Feeling exotic? Add thinly sliced green apple or pear to your grilled cheese. The taste contrast is surprisingly scrumptious!

-Not Spicy Enough? Toss some green chilies and/or jalapenos for that extra kick.

-Go green! Top off your treat with guacamole.

Now next time it rains you have a new, semi-homemade, grilled cheese recipe! Besides, nothing makes you feel better than comfort food. Well, maybe the chocolate croissant I bought at Fresh and Easy :) Damn them and their pastry bakery!

Pâtisseries from Paris: Spotlight on Moisan and Legay Choc

I'm not going to lie, I ate a crap load of pâtisseries (pastries) in Paris but luckily it's a very walkable city so I didn't feel guilty when I covered several miles on foot each day.

It wasn't in my budget to eat out three times a day so I would stop at boulangeries (bakeries) because for about $2.50-$4 (€2-€3) I could get les pains (breads), viennoiseries (croissants/pain au chocolat) or bruchette (baguette/flute type loaves) covered with cheeses, vegetables and meats like ham and pepperoni.

I fell in love with two places that changed my life more than my discovery of coffee back in college.

Moisan is an all-organic bakery with several locations throughout Paris. The above picture is from their location near the Catacombs and was my treat while waiting in line. On that particular day their bruchette was like a mini pizza on a crunchy, bruchette flute with a little sauce under the cheese.

I went back for this delicious treat again another day but this time it was on soft, bread-stick like loaves sans sauce. I thought it tasted best this way, not that either way was bad by any means. This made an easy to eat snack while I walked the streets and it more than tied me over until my next meal.

When I stepped into this bakery I was greeted by a pretzel hanging from the ceiling which was shaped like a penis. Thinking nothing of all the phallic shaped pastries, since I was so focused on finding my beloved bruchette, I didn't realize I had just entered a famous, gay patisserie.

Everything was so fresh and inexpensive - I could have blown every last euro I had in this place! Ok, maybe I sort of did but damn it was worth it. Legay Choc is definitely worth stopping by even if it's just to marvel at the penis pastries.

I'm salivating now so that means it's time for me to go Google a recipe for pain au chocolat. I can't think of a better way to destroy my kitchen.

A Look Inside Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris

Notre Dame de Paris, which translates to Our Lady of Paris, is an architecturally stunning, Gothic, Roman Catholic cathedral in the Île de la Cité area of Paris, France. Its construction was lengthy beginning in 1163 and was finally completed in 1345.

Because Notre Dame is one of the most recognizable and well known cathedrals, the line to enter can be quite lengthy. You could get there when it opens at 7:45am or just do what I did and walk through the exit. Ok, that's probably the worst tourist advice ever but I was pressed for time and patience after a long day of walking. With that said, plan ahead because they close at 6:45pm. Though the entrance is free of charge, the cathedral Tower and Treasury have fees.

During the French Revolution many parts of Notre Dame were destroyed and statues of kings of Judah were beheaded. The heads that were found are on display at Musée de Cluny (National Museum of Middle Ages) in Paris.

Religious or not, this is the kind of architecture you can really appreciate and it's absolutely worth seeing, especially if you're on a budget but want to see a real piece of history. Though it might seem like nothing but tourists surrounding you, Notre Dame still has services and people still kneel to pray regardless of the quiet chaos around them.

Not too far from Notre Dame are the Paris "Love Locks". This trend has hit countries like Belgium and Japan so to see it in a city that already makes you fall in love with it makes it all the more special. So lovers: get a padlock before you travel to Paris, sign it, hook it to either the Pont des Arts or Pont de l'Acheveche then toss the key in the Seine River and become part of history here just like I did.

Père Lachaise Cemetery - Paris, France

I suppose since I'm on a roll of checking out ancient dead things (Catacombs, Mutter Museum), adding Paris' Père Lachaise Cemetery to my blog is pretty fitting.

Larger than Life Tombstone Cat

Père Lachaise, named after François de la Chaise, has been said to be the world's most visited cemetery and its 110 acres of burial ground contain over 1 million bodies. The cemetery opened in 1804 in which a 5 year old girl was the first to be buried under the circumstances set by Napoleon Bonaparte that “Every citizen has the right to be buried regardless of race or religion”.

I could have spent a whole day here observing the details and creativity that went into these mausoleums, monuments and locked mini chapel like structures that were just big enough for a person to sit inside with their loved ones. The tombstones, statues and architecture were so elaborate that, at times, I felt as if I were in a museum. In fact, I spent so much time here that I gave up looking for Jim Morrison's grave which is not listed on the public cemetery map, most likely due to vandals. A map of Père Lachaise's most famous graves is available on their website http://www.pere-lachaise.com/ .

Père Lachaise is still operating and accepting burials, however, there is a lengthy wait list and few plots available. You must also be a resident of Paris or die there in order to get in line for a coveted spot.

Though taking a stroll through a cemetery might sound creepy, you will regret not seeing this historical site if you're visiting which is why Père Lachaise is one of my recommended picks for touristy things to do in Paris.

Moulin Rouge & Quartier Pigalle: A Night in Paris' Red Light District

I couldn't go all the way to Europe and not take a walk on the wild side, literally. Moulin Rouge is a caberate that was built back in 1889 and is located in the Pigalle district not far from Montmartre. Since the days of originating the can-can dance, it has turned into a touristy strip lined with sex shops and prostitutes. Though I've heard all the stories about hookers and pickpockets that prowl Paris' Red Light District, I didn't fear strutting through Pigalle in the dark of the night to get these money shots. Surprisingly, my boyfriend and I were never bothered, tourist traffic was low and I was shocked by the lack of lurking "ladies of the evening".

Right around here I had some over priced and especially tasty gelato, then I took a stroll down sex shop alley. Being that I often shoot for a costume company in Los Angeles, I have attended the Lingerie Expo and a couple other questionable adult events around town so I set my standards high - Quartier Pigalle did not disappoint.

This area was famous for its reputation which spawned the World War II nickname "Pig Alley". After seeing blocks of exotic artwork I had worked up an appetite for anything that didn't resemble a phallic symbol. My boyfriend and I walked the Red Light District for quite some time in search of a place that wasn't an over priced tourist trap. Finally, we found a divey little restaurant hidden on a side street where Vespas zipped by and the clicking of heels could be heard on the cobblestone.

I admit, I wasn't very vegetarian friendly in France but I was curious about the quality of the meat here compared to the states. Besides, I can't fly all the way to Europe and not experience the local fare. The beef was quite tasty but this veggie lover cant be swayed so easily.

So there you have it, a romp on the wild side of Paris, sans brothel of course. If you're looking to check out this area while you're in Paris take the metro to Blanche to get that touristy photo in front of Moulin Rouge or take it straight on to the Pigalle stop for maximum adult novelty exposure. Keep your valuables hidden, stay alert and don't let anyone pull you into a "show" or you'll end up with an outrageous bill for something you didn't order. Basically, don't be an obvious tourist.

Skull and Bones: Catacombs of Paris

Ok, don't judge me since I've already admitted how much I loved the Mutter Museum but I'm absolutely fascinated with forensics so when I heard about a secret spot just outside of Père Lachaise Cemetery where I could see the Catacombes de Paris which holds the remains of about 6 million people, I had to see it.

After paying around 8 euros, a small group of tourists and myself were whisked off to a stairwell that went deep into the underground. It was a long and dark journey until we finally reached the cravenness like bottom which is also the remains of Paris' stone mines. For a while, all I saw were strange sculptures and this mysterious well.

Then I saw the pictures and stories on the walls about the process each body went through before being placed in the catacombs back in the 12th century to solve the overcrowding problem that began happening in cemeteries. Then I saw the bones....many lovely bones. They were all neatly stacked in, what felt like, miles of piles. I spent forever just staring at each skull trying to determine which ones were male and female judging by their bone structure. It was so intriguing.

I sort of wish we still did bazaar stuff like this. I mean, those bones were super clean, stench free, perfectly stacked and if California started a catacomb charging tourists $12 a pop we could get that state out of debt. Who's with me on this one? Ok fine, it's just me.

I was really fortunate to have found the Catacombs of Paris, it really was the coolest thing I saw while visiting though it did take two prior attempts to get in. Not only is the place hard to find but they run a tight schedule and it's quickly becoming a more well known tourist attraction so if you don't arrive super early the line will start to wrap around Père Lachaise Cemetery. This truly is a must see and my top pick for something interesting to do while in Paris.

Vlog #2: International Ashton Backpacks Paris, France

Bonjour les amis mon!

I had an amazing birthday this past year backpacking Europe with my first stop in Paris, France. Some of my ancestors are French and I've been fascinated with their culture and language ever since I found out. It was a hectic ten days of sight seeing and attempting to order things in French which worked most of the time. Well, in exception of when I asked for a check once and somehow ended up with a draft beer. That wasn't my fault though, it belonged to the table next to me but the waitress probably thought that since I'm a tourist I'll have to drink it, which I did...with a big grin on my face. Hey, why waste a good thing. Too bad that had to come out of my Euro coffee funds which quickly turned into a twice daily habit or what some might call an addiction but who's judging?

Meatless Monday: Mom's Sweet Potato Pudding

Ever since I was a little girl my mother made sweet potato pudding every holiday and to this day it's still my favorite side dish. Thank goodness she tricked me into liking sweet potatoes as a child because they have just as much beta carotene as carrots and I can't stand carrots unless you sneak them into my food. They're also a pretty decent source of Vitamin A, Potassium and Calcium. So cheers to sweet potatoes!

Mom's Sweet Potato Pudding

RECIPE:

4 Large Sweet Potatoes

2 Eggs

1 Bag Mini Marshmellows (large ones if you're feeling spunky and have a deep pan)

3/4 Cup Light and Dark Brown Sugar (I prefer mixing both but you can just use one if you want)

1/2 Stick Butter

1 tbsp. Vanilla Extract

1 tbsp. Cinnamon (heaping because I love this stuff)

1/2 tsp. Salt

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350° and chop sweet potatoes into chunks (as seen above). Boil them for about 30 minutes as they need to be soft enough to be mixed with an egg beater with the rest of the ingredients. I supposed if you have one of those retarded expensive, pretentious Kitchenaid mixing bowls only neurotic housewives own you can use that too but I'm on a poor man's budget and I'm not a douche.

Add butter in slices first as they will melt in the hot, boiled potatoes on their own. Toss in the vanilla, cinnamon, salt and light/dark brown sugar in and mix until smooth. Next, add both eggs and mix until it takes on a custard like texture. You can add more ingredients to taste such as nutmeg if you like.

I used a glass pan that was about 10 x 12 inches but that's because it was the largest pan I had available. You can use whatever you have but make sure it leaves you leave enough room to add the marshmallows later. Cook for 40 minutes.

After your house smells like sweet deliciousness, take the baked goodness out and throw on those marshmallows! I shoved mine down to sweet potato pudding to make sure they all fit because this is the only time of year you will ever catch me eating marshmallows. Place back into the oven for another 5 or so minutes or until the top turn a little brown around the edges.

Note: Keep an eye on those little boogers, they expand fast and will attempt to jump ship. If they appear to be doing so, just shove them down with a fork.

I have never tried this dish with vegan marshmallows so I have no idea if they cook the same. There are also other versions of this with granola, peacan and oatmeal like crunchy toppings which are equally delicious but I've always favored the way my mom made it. I suppose this dish could also double as a healthy dessert, just don't tell your kids it's made with sweet potatoes.

Now go get your ass on a treadmill - those holiday pounds have to vanish before the new year!

That's a Wrap! Creative Thrift Wrapping

When I give gifts I sit back, observe what I'm wrapping and think about something unusual I can turn it into. I enjoy the process and it gives my O.C.D. room to run wild. It's also a great way to make your friends laugh, smile or even make them turn bright red like the time I brought a present wrapped like a giant penis to a Chinese Gift Exchange. Or the time I gave a picture of a creepy naked male model inside a nice picture frame. Personally, I thought they were great gifts.

RULE #1: Never Buy Wrapping Paper

I'm all about going green and buying wrapping paper is wasteful. Instead I use circulars, newspapers, magazines, old posters or even shopping bags. I also often re-use wrapping paper from gifts given to me which is what I did with the above puppy (whom I so lovingly called Bob Baker). Everything used to create this decorative dog was from recycled wrapping paper.

The pup was up for grabs at a Chinese Gift Exchange I attended a few years ago and everyone fought over it! The best part was its body was constructed from a cup of diced peaches, Hello Kitty travel Band-aids, Clorox toilet cleaner drops, travel KY Lube and its head was a bath loofah. The snowflake on the collar was the tag from the loofah which I pulled through the paper.

RULE #2: What are the Gift Recipient's Interests?

I wrap with the intent of appealing to the interests of whoever is receiving the gift. The "Cool Cat" above was a gift I gave my boyfriend. We love cats and especially Kitlers (cats that look like Hitler - you know since they have a low adoption rate) so my goal was to create a gift that I could wrap into the shape of a kitty. I used old magazines I stole from the gym and cut away. I even gave the cat sunglasses, whiskers, a tail, collar and name from cut out letters as seen on the front of its body.

I love indie music and my boyfriend is in a band so as you can imagine, we are into the rock scene. He's also a graphic designer so creating something for him can be challenging. I wanted this gift to look busy and bizarre. I used random advertisements and meshed them together - I was happy with the results.

RULE #3: Spread the Recycling Word

I told my mother about recycling circulars as wrapping paper and she did the same. She even used extra ribbon from the tree to make candy cane bows. Cute!

Rule #4: Put Catnip in Your Cat's Gifts

Because nothing is more entertaining than watching a cat go ape shit on a present long enough to distract it from destroying your Christmas tree.

These desserts were so delicious I knew I had to rush to my computer and blog about them for those of you who are still in a shopping coma and forgot to buy something for after your holiday dinner.

4 Cheap Touristy Things to Do in Philladelphia

Philadelphia is often referred to as the "Birthplace of America" and visiting it is like a lesson in American history that doesn't suck. Many of the events that shaped our country happened here and some of the 17th - 18th century structures are still in tact. With so much ground to cover here I decided to highlight my favorite touristy things to do while visiting Philly.

1. THE LIBERTY BELL

To many, this may seem like nothing more than a cracked bell but The Liberty Bell is an iconic symbol of American Independence and was rung to mark the reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8, 1776. It's free to view and it only takes about 10 minutes to pop in for a goofy picture next to it.

2. INDEPENDENCE HALL

Since it's completion in 1773, the Independence Hall (also referred to as the State House) is where the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were debated and adopted. I've got to say, standing in the same room where former president George Washington once stood was pretty cool. The tour takes about 30 minutes and cameras/camcorders are allowed but I suggest being the first person to get in each room or everyone will swarm to the front before you can get a good picture.

3. SOUTH STREET

South Street is chock-full of diverse and urban mixes of local art (like the Isaiah Zagar house seen above), touristy restaurants, bars and many adult novelty shops like the famous Condom Kingdom. It's like Hollywood Boulevard meets Bourbon Street meets Haight Street. Be sure to take the metro here as street parking sucks and garage parking can be pricey.

4. MUTTER MUSEUM

The Mutter Museum is a medical museum that showcases a collection of medical oddities, specimens, wax molds and medical equipment. You are not allowed to use cameras, cell phones or camcorders here so I have borrowed this image. This was an incredible and eerie display of skulls, skeletons, fetuses, brains and the body of the famous "Soap Lady". It was worth the money even though it's not particularly cheap.

Rock Out Weekend: KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas

Before I tour the east coast and all its fabulous foods this holiday season I wanted to tell you about an awesome concert put on by L.A.'s local rock station - KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas. It's a night sponsored by bad draft beer and enough greasy food to make you projectile vomit while you rock out to two days of live alternative music.

This year the concert was held at the Gibson Amphitheater at Universal City Walk. I attended Saturday's show and though Incubus, my favorite band, bailed on performing I still enjoyed every second. I skipped the first performance by New Found Glory, though I could hear them sucking from the lobby, and checked out Young and the Giant for a minute - they were alright.

Bush

I admit, I wasn't looking forward to Bush as much as I was other bands but they sounded great live and the crowd's energy went through the roof when they took stage. Gavin, whom I saw backstage holding his son Zuma, looked rested and refreshed which is surprising for a front man. I'd say the highlight of their set was when Gavin played guitar solo under a single spotlight singing "Glycerine". Though that's not a tune I've ever been a fan of, it sounded quite crisp. They followed that up with my favorite song of theirs "Chemicals" which got the crowd spilling $10 beers all over again.

Social Distortion

Though this band has been around longer than I've been on this earth, chances are you're a fan if you like alternative rock. They had the least amount of energy on stage but they still had everyone on their feet, especially for their best known tune "Story of my Life".

Sublime with Rome

Rome Ramirez had some big shoes to fill when he took over for front man Bradley Nowell back in 2009 and he definitely delivered. Though you can't beat the original, Rome has a nice voice but he likes to keep his eyes closed when he sings. Just before taking the stage, band member Bud Gaugh announced in an interview with KROQ that this would be his last show with Sublime with Rome since he wanted to take a break and focus on his family. Who knows what the future holds for these guys now.

Blink 182

The grand finale was none other than one of my favorite bands of my high school years, Blink 182. I can't say they're great lyricists by any means but I enjoy their dedication to being naked, playing like assholes and I can respect that they find ways to include words like "diarrhea" into their music. I've also often referred to "Take Off Your Pants and Jacket" as the best album title of all time not to mention their song "All the Small Things" is the best song to dedicate to an ex boyfriend. Mark's hair was a disaster during the show and as always, Travis played the drums like a savage so I'd say this performance rocked.

I also saw 311 whose set sounded eerily like spot on tracks off their album. I'd say they put on a decent show but was distracted by the fact that I've never noticed how cute lead singer, Nick Hexum, is in real life. I take that back, I just Googled him and he looks better from a far. Plus he never once played an instrument during their set - isn't that sort of mandatory to be a real punk? FAIL.

Chevelle played somewhere in the middle of it all and since I've seen them before I walked in and out of their set. They play a decent show and they aren't bad to look at either. But what exactly have they been up to lately in the way of recording? Well, Ted Skryker of KROQ just corrected me by mentioning that their new album, Hats Off to the Bull, dropped on December 6 so though it feels like they've been M.I.A. I suppose they are making a comeback.

Ok Rockers, I'm off on my east coast excursion now.

Frangelli's Bakery - Philly's Best Apple Pie

I might be back in L.A. but I'll be damned if I can't get the apple pie from Frangelli's Bakery in South Philly out of my head. The day after Thanksgiving I saw a sign in their window that read, "Pies $5." I began begging my boyfriend to spot me the cash by guilt tripping him, claiming he owed me an anniversary pie (which worked like a charm), and before I knew it I was skipping out the door in the pouring rain with the big, stupid grin on my face.

I really can't think of many other times in my life that trump the very moment I brought this retardly good looking, perfectly cooked pie home in its neatly taped, cardboard box. I ripped it open with the same enthusiasm I once used to tear open Christmas presents as a child and cut a small piece to photograph for my blog. Then it happened...

(Pre shoveling)

I completely lost control and began shoveling it into my mouth. I felt like an addict with no control; I had to eat this pie - all of it. Plates were pointless now as I hovered over this enclosed circle of sweet goodness like a vulture honing in on its prey. With a fork in hand, I began harpooning pieces of savory apple and savagely tossing them at my face. It was freaking magical. That is until my boyfriend caught me with the half eaten pie and a screwed up face that read, "If you ever speak about this again I'll have to kill you." Thank God I gave him a piece, that way no one can ever say I ate the whole thing.

Frangelli's has delicious hand crafted pastries, cakes and cookies as well as their infamous ice cream donuts, which are only available during the summer. Their sticky buns seem to have a huge following but I didn't find them to be as good as their apple fitters, both seen below.

Now that I have predisposed my body to diabetes, I've got to get my ass on a treadmill and pretend like this incident never happened. Now for the love of God, do yourself a favor and go get a pie from Frangelli's for your holiday party contribution or create a real memory and eat the whole damn thing yourself like I did. Just be sure to say the crazy girl a couple doors down sent you because I need a friggin' hook up here.

Easy Cheesy Frittata

I wanted to make use of my Italian Market vegetables before they died a slow, painful death waiting on my boyfriend to cook me dinner so I showed him how to cook a satisfyingly tasty, no brainer meal. This is all part of my plan to trick my man into doing all the cooking while I kick back and eat another whole pie from Frangelli's Bakery. You might call this impossible; I call it aspirations.

Easy Cheesy Frittata

Ingredients:
1 Yellow Squash (chopped, boiled)
1 Green Squash (chopped, boiled)
1 Head of Broccoli (heads only, chopped, boiled)
Handful of String Bean (chopped, boiled)
Handful of Asparagus (chopped, boiled)
2 Carrots (chopped, boiled)
1/2 Red Onion (diced)
5 White Mushrooms (diced)
1 Green Pepper (diced)
1 Green Chili Pepper (diced)
6 Eggs
Pepper Jack Cheese
Feta Cheese

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°F. Boil squash, string beans, broccoli, asparagus and carrots for about 10 minutes then drain. I threw them all in a skillet quickly on low heat afterwards with a little butter and extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper but that's optional. I scrambled the eggs in a bowl (removing a little yolk) and added a splash of non-fat milk. Grease whatever baking pan you have (mine was about 8x12), combine all your vegetables and line the bottom of your pan with them. Pour eggs on top and toss it in the oven. After about 15 minutes, I took it out and topped it with the pepper jack cheese and sprinkled on some feta. Put it back in the oven for another 15 minutes or more if you want it browned a bit on top like I do.

(FYI, this is not my dirty ass oven - only men would let things crust and char like this because they probably think it looks cool)

Yes, I know I use feta a lot but because of its salty nature it keeps me from using much, if any, seasoning. Remember, you can always switch out vegetables and season things differently if you don't enjoy something I've used in this dish.

(See that tiny square? That's what I ate, he finished off the rest. So much for left overs.)

Topping Tip: Try this with a little Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce. It compliments eggs well and gives it a little kick.

Your man will appreciate this protein packed, delish dish and it's easy to teach him how to cook. Besides, he'll look super sexy in an apron and it will give you some alone time with that apple pie without having to give up a piece. Ok fine, that's just me.

South Philly Represents - JR's Deli and Carangi Baking Co.

After spending a couple days wondering the streets of Philadelphia and seeing some real American history (you know that subject I used to always cheat in back in high school), I was inspired to have my lunch at another locals haunt. When you see this city on TV it's always about cheesesteaks but I've come to find that, though it's always going to be a staple here, that's more of a tourist treat. I wanted to see where people in South Philly walk to for fresh baked bread and sandwiches.

Tucked away in a neighborhood on Croskey St. and Wolf, there is a corner sandwich shop called JR's Deli. It's every lazy man's dream to be so close to hand crafted food and it's just a couple blocks from my favorite dive bar.

What does a vegetarian order from a deli in the middle of a meat lover's city you ask? Specially made greatness.

Piled high roasted red peppers, spinach, hand breaded eggplant and provolone cheese perfectly melted in the middle of a super fresh, seeded roll created a mouth watering texture contrast. I'm not going to lie; I've been back here to eat this veggie lover's delight several times since.

My friend ordered an Italian sandwich with extra peppers and veggies - I can't deny how delicious this looks.

Deli meats and cheeses are cut fresh for each individual order and hot sandwiches like the ever so popular cheesesteak can be found here as well. JR's can ever send one of their quirky and cute sandwich artists to deliver straight to your front door if you're having one of those ultimate relaxation days where you just don't feel like putting on pants. I often have these myself.

Carmen's Country Kitchen Philadelphia

Now that my Thanksgiving leftovers are beginning to resemble a petri dish, I'm using it as an excuse to hit up a legendary breakfast/brunch hot spot with a back story that begs for curiosity, Carmen's Country Kitchen. The rumor is Carmen was a former Miami prostitute turned restaurant owner who does not allow cops to dine in her facility. (Street pharmacists, if you're reading this, sounds like a great place for an omelet and a legit drug deal). Not only have my Philly friends mentioned this to be a "must try" when visiting but I've also read rave reviews about it on sites like Zagat, Yelp, Urban Spoon and LocalEats so this was a no brainer for me.

Before I entered this hole in the wall, hipster luncheonette and all of its glorious dive-iness, I noticed there was an interesting table outside built in the back of a pickup truck.

This tiny 20 or so seat corner diner felt like my grandmother's kitchen, personalized and nostalgic. When I saw plastic lawn chairs for furniture and mismatched coffee mugs I knew it was a facade; this food had to be epic.

The restaurant was rather busy when I arrived so I ended up sitting at the bar when I noticed a rather unusual theme throughout the decor. Phallic symbols and nipples adorned shelves and counter tops while walls were emblazoned with mardi gras beads, random trinkets from around the globe and of course, a huge oil painting of Carmen herself.

The menu was brief featuring 4 creative options, each with a recommended side dish, and the coffee was strong. There was even a super scrumptious selection of local jams, chutneys and spreads that were to die for.

I could see Carmen herself through a tiny kitchen order window, slaving over a hot stove cooking my waffles covered in Puttman's Baked Beans with a side of applewood smoked bacon (unreal how great it was and I don't even like meat). My boyfriend ordered a spinach, roasted pepper, apple and black bean omelet which I would have taken a picture of if he hadn't destroyed it while I was in the restroom.

Though prices were on the high side, $14 for the entree and $2 for a side add on, it was quite the experience. I've never seen the owner of a restaurant cook my food much less come out to chat while I ate and I've certainly never dined with coffee cups shaped like breasts.

Philly Favorites - Water Ice and Inside Out Pizza

Before you go making anything healthy for Thanksgiving tomorrow, salivate over these tasty local treats I can't resist when I visit Philadelphia.

Inside Out Pizza

A local's favorite, inside out pizza is as simple as its name; it's a pizza folded and deep fried. My friends and I were hungry while watching some great indie bands perform at JR's Bar, a South Philly music scene secret gem, when I heard you could order this crispy, golden-brown, cheese treat and have it delivered to me while I sat at the bar. Challenge accepted!

No more than 15 minutes later I was biting into this epic pizza twist which cost me a whopping $3. Inside out pizza can be found all over Philly but this one in particular came from Florida Style Pizza on Beechwood Street. As a Florida native, I can't say I've ever eaten a pizza from my home state that tasted as good as this did. Oh and why are iPhone flashes so unforgiving - I swear I'm not that white!

Finally, I finished a night of comfort food off with something I've been hearing about for ages but never had a chance to try until now.

Water Ice

This frozen goodness isn't quite Italian ice, shaved ice or gelato. Philadelphia Water Ice Factory describes it as "super premium Italian ice". It does have a much smoother texture and stronger, natural fruit flavor that's less tart than sorbet. I absolutely adore the mango flavor (shown above) which I bought prepacked at a corner store but when water ice in season locations sell it scooped freshly in a cup. Water Ice ranges anywhere from 90-110 calories a serving which is awesome since it's so satisfying. It can be found all over Philly and has even made its way to 12 other states, mostly in Restaurant Depo stores.

Philadelphia Week!

I have arrived in Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love and baked goods! I'm not kidding; there are bakeries on every street corner here. Philly is home of the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the Second Bank of the United States and Independence National Historic Park where the U.S.A. became a separate nation. It's also home to some of the best comfort food I've had and I can't wait to share it all with you.

Since we don't have them on the west coast, I started my morning with a Dunkin' Donuts coffee and a disgustingly delicious chocolate cake donut, then I hit up the Italian Market to load up on fresh Vegetables. I'm sure my blood sugar was through the roof but what the hell, I'm on vacation.

I left the market with about 6 bags full of fresh, local produce all for $20. Now I have all my supplies in which to turn my meat loving Philly friends into temporary vegetarians. I decided to make them my Poor Man's Vegetarian Tacos (seen in my previous blog) but this time I added green squash, jalapeno cheese and more peppers since everyone seems to love spicy food here.

Poor Man's Vegetarian Taco Pantry Challenge

I had a refrigerator full of dying vegetables, zero grocery money, spare time and a hunger that needed satisfying - what better way to solve these problems than with a pantry challenge! This recipe is inspired by an authentic, homemade Mexican lunch I saw on set. I haven't really cooked Mexican food at home since college so hopefully this doesn't suck. Here goes!

Poor Man's Vegetarian Tacos

INGREDIENTS

-1 Yellow Squash (Boiled and thinly sliced. Chayote squash preferred)

-2 Ears of White Corn (Boiled or out of a can if you're really that lazy)

-10 Cherry Tomatoes (Diced. More or less, depends on how broke you are)

-1 Green Bell Pepper (diced)

-1/2 Onion (Diced. I used red because I had it but white is preferred)

-1 Green Chili Pepper (Diced. I like mild peppers but you can go hotter)

-1 Teaspoon Chili Powder

-1 Tablespoon Butter

-1/4 Cheese (I used a variety but Mexican cheese is ideal)

-Sprinkle of whatever Mexican spice you prefer, I used Adobo by Goya.

-Tortillas (your pick what kind, I used whatever I had left in the cupboard)

DIRECTIONS

Throw everything in a bowl, nuke in microwave until butter and cheese are melted then stir together. Warm up a tortilla, dump this inside and roll it up. Drink a margarita then go back for seconds :) Mine made about 6 tacos with medium tortillas.

I found that this meal reheated nicely and you can always alter it to your liking, especially when it comes to seasoning. So there you have it, I made a meal out of crap that was going to rot in my fridge. Most of the vegetables I used cost under $1 (the green chili pepper was only 13 cents) and they were about to be sacrificed to the trash had I not rescued them in this pantry challenge.

You'll thank me later for leaving out the "magical fruit". Disfrutar!
