Netflix On Android

2011-07-17T11:58:00.015-04:00

Some owners might have been irked out to find Windows Phone 7 getting its groove on with an official Netflix app before them, but after much wait, it’s finally here! However, you probably want to be just a little reserved for the moment since not all Android smartphones will be able to download the long time coming .

Specifically, if you happen to own with the HTC EVO 4G, T-Mobile G2, HTC Incredible, Google Nexus One, or the Google Nexus S, you’ll be happy to know that you can download the app right now through the Android Market. As for the rest of the bunch, it’s unknown at this point when it’ll be made available to other devices since they have to individually test each handset due to the lack of standard streaming playback features amongst Android devices.

According to Roma De, member of the app’s product team, the developers are able to provide a functional app–for now–only for Android phones that include playback support required for Netflix to run. Roma De explains that most Android devices lack standard features for playing back streaming videos. Such features are needed by the Netflix application to run on the device.
Because of the non-standard implementation of video playback features in Android phones, Netflix has to test each Android handset and create the app for handsets that do support playback. However, Netflix assures Android users that the list of supported phones will continue to grow in the next months so that the Netflix app can work in as many Android phones as there are existing.

Netflix justifies its price hike

2011-07-17T11:43:00.007-04:00

Netflix abruptly jacked up its price for that deal by 60 percent. Now, if you want to check out one DVD-by-mail at a time, and enjoy unlimited streaming of Netflix’s 20,000 TV shows and (mostly older) movies to your computer, phone or Blu-ray player, you have to pay $16 a month instead of $10. (The price hike hits new customers immediately, and existing customers on Sept. 1.

“Why the changes? Last November, when we launched our $7.99 unlimited streaming plan, DVDs by mail was treated as a $2 add on to our unlimited streaming plan. At the time, we didn’t anticipate offering DVD only plans. Since then we have realized that there is still a very large continuing demand for DVDs both from our existing members as well as non-members. Given the long life we think DVDs by mail will have, treating DVDs as a $2 add on to our unlimited streaming plan neither makes great financial sense nor satisfies people who just want DVDs. Creating an unlimited DVDs by mail plan (no streaming) at our lowest price ever, $7.99, does make sense and will ensure a long life for our DVDs by mail offering.”

6: Quick Response codes to replace Search

Some time ago we started to see the advent of search based call to actions in ATL advertising, where an advert ends with the line “search widgets online” rather than a website address.

7: Android store beats Apple app store

Android market had the highest rate of overall growth, reaching 130,000 applications in the US by Dec 31, or more than six times the number at the end of 2009, Utrecht, Netherlands-based Distimo said in a report. Nokia's free applications surged 10-fold, helping its total US applications more than triple to 25,000, the third-biggest app lineup after Apple and Android.

4: Web to get content- heavy

2010 saw Google implement its “May Day” algorithm update, part of which penalised cookie cutter content that is excessively template driven or syndicated to multiple sites in favour of more unique and valuable pages.

5: Massive growth in contextual PPC model

With the success of Google’s Content Network (now rebranded the Display Network), many publisher sites and shopping aggregators are following with similar paid for listings models, offering their real estate at a price. Although very early stages, none of them have quite mastered a ‘quality score’ of some type making the payment model very much a fixed cost per click (CPC) but still split by vertical.

Smartphone users likely already feel the pull of their respective app store/marketplace as much as if not more than a traditional search engine like Google, if/when they have a particular need.

“To maintain any kind of grasp on the mobile user, search engines will need to be able to point out apps that might be relevant to the searcher’s search - and even give them a one-click install option for when the search is being carried out from a mobile with the right operating system. This will manifest as another type of vertical search on Google and Bing, as well as being pulled into the normal results as a universal search element.”

ViewPad 7

ViewPad 7

2010-09-01T23:04:00.054-04:00

The ViewPad 7 is a world's first 7" Android 2.2 (Froyo) tablet with phone functionality, multi-tasking capabilities and front and back-facing cameras, VGA and 3MP, resolutions respectively.

Within a lightweight, pocket-sized design, this device is ideal for anyone who needs a mobile connection to the world via email and video and wants to enjoy a wide-range of applications.

With full 3G and phone functionality, a full size SIM card slot and integrated Bluetooth connectivity the ViewPad 7 will support instant messaging, text/mms messaging, VOIP and standard voice calls all in a single device.

It features an easy to use familiar interface with a G-sensor that reorients the screen depending on how the device is held and access to the Google Android app store featuring over 100,000 applications.

Additional features includes a Micro SD slot for up to 32GB of storage; Wi-Fi and 3G functionality for web browsing and USB connectivity. It also boasts advanced features including Assisted GPS and an office document reader, along with the capability for hand-written note taking. There is also an e-book reader, when combined with the crystal clear LED screen, makes the ViewPad 7 an invaluable travelling companion.

Superior to other tablet offerings with resistive touch technology the ViewPad 7 incorporates a capacitive multi-touch screen and is a portable, easy-to-use and competitively priced device that will transform the way that consumers read, watch, listen to and interact with media in a mobile environment.

(Productivity)

Many will argue that tablets are designed more for consuming than producing, which results in a device that resembles a giant phone. By leveraging the true multitasking capabilities offered by the Android system, a tablet may actually seem viable as a netbook replacement. Yes, typing on an onscreen keyboard is still awkward; but for those that don’t want to lug around a bluetooth keyboard, Swype will be a great addition. The key to productivity is a good platform, and Google has arguably the best cloud based office suite available in Google Docs.

Happy New Year 2011!!

2009-12-31T18:17:00.011-05:00

New Year's Eve 2011 will find more people ringing in the new year at home. Keeping the party budget friendly and fun takes some effort but the end result is a great New Year's Eve party in the comfort of your home. Invite over some friends and watch the Time Square Ball drop and take it easy on your bank account with these New Year's Eve party ideas.

Pot Luck New Year's Eve Party

You don't have to have a sit-down meal on New Year's Eve but the party won't be the same without great food. Don't spend all your time in the kitchen and miss the party -- make it a pot luck party and everyone can participate.
Ask each guest to bring their favorite dish to the party. Best to make it a buffet and make sure you don't have duplicate dishes. Ask each guest to RSVP with what dish they are bringing and plan accordingly.
If guests are coming after dinner, make it a pot luck dessert party. Supply the champagne, soft drinks and party decorations and the desserts will be provided by your guests.
A pot luck appetizer party is another great idea for a budget friendly New Year's Eve party. If everyone brings their favorite appetizer, you'll have plenty of finger foods to enjoy while you wait for 2011 to arrive.

Time Capsule Party

A Time Capsule Party is the perfect way to celebrate the New Year. Ask everyone to bring something to put in the time capsule. This can be a important story from a newspaper or a picture that they think best represents something that happened in 2010. In addition, ask everyone to write a prediction for 2011: The Grammy winner, a stock market pick or even a weight loss goal. You'll look at the contents of the time capsule at next year's New Year's Eve party.

New Year's Eve Game Party

Waiting for midnight is often a long wait once dinner is over. Games are a great way to get guests to enjoy the night while waiting for the ball to drop.
New Year's Charades: Have guests guess what events or celebrities in the news from 2010 each 'contestant' is trying to act out.

Board Game Tournament

This is for a larger party--with at least 10 or more guests. It's a twist on the usual board game play to keep everyone entertained: Set up a few board games such as: Monopoly, Scrabble, Life, Clue.
Set timers for the games and play for a certain length of time. Once the timer goes off, the winner of each game (at that point) is recorded. Play until everyone has had a chance to play each game. Recommended time is about 20-30 minutes per game.
Add up all the points and crown the person who has the most points the winner. Giving prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place is fun--check the Dollar Store for some cheesy gifts that will be fun to award and easy on the wallet.
Staying home for New Year's Eve is a great, safe way to celebrate the incoming New Year while saving money. Happy New Year!

H1N1 Swine Flu Not So Catchy

2009-12-30T23:10:00.009-05:00

Study Shows H1N1 Flu Less Transmissible Than Previous Pandemics

Dec. 30, 2009 -- H1N1 swine flu is less catchy than previous pandemic flu bugs, a household study finds.

The study looked at 216 two- to six-person households in which one family member came down with a confirmed case of 2009 H1N1 swine flu.

Only 13% of family members caught the flu from the infected person. Transmission rates ranged from 28% in two-person families to just 9% in six-person families.

Strikingly, children aged 18 or younger were twice as likely to catch H1N1 swine flu from an infected family member as were family members aged 19 to 50. And people over 50 were about 80% less likely to catch the flu as were younger adults.

"Our results underscore the critical role children play in the unfolding pandemic," note study researchers Simon Cauchemez, PhD, and colleagues.

Even so, children were just as likely as adults to transmit the flu to other family members.

The study also showed that when a family member did catch H1N1 swine flu, symptoms appeared two to four days after symptoms appeared in the first family member that had the flu. On average, the second person in the household to get the flu came down with symptoms 2.6 days after the first person came down with symptoms.

The study is a collaboration between researchers at Imperial College, London, and the CDC. The researchers restricted their study to families of usual size -- two to six members.

People with an illness that met the case definition for H1N1 swine flu were contacted by state and local health departments and interviewed by telephone. Data was then collected on all other household members, defined as anyone who spent at least one night in the house with the infected person in the week after that person came down with flu symptoms.

The study appears in the Dec. 31 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Also appearing in the same issue is an analysis of an H1N1 swine flu outbreak in a New York City school, in which 35% of students and 10% of school employees reported flu symptoms. Symptoms appeared in 95% of infected people within 2.2 days of contact with an infected person. Within the school, each infected person was estimated to have infected 3.3 other people.
