Mater Dei is hosting "Meet the Monarchs Night" from 6-9 p.m. tonight. Dinner will be served followed by inter-squad scrimmages for both the fresh/soph and junior varsity teams. The varsity squad will then take the court and play against their families during the first half, and the school's alumni during the second.

"It'll be interesting to see [the alumni] come back, and see if they're in shape," said Christine Collins-Kiernan, Mater Dei assistant coach.

The Monarchs were both Trinity League and CIF Division IIAA champions last season. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was last year's Gatorade State Player of the Year, averaging 22.8 points per game and leading her team to a 32-1 record. (Good luck, alumni.)

Dinner and the games cost $10. Just watching the games is free of charge.

Laura Delgado of San Pedro pulled away in the last mile and won the City Section girls' cross country championship Saturday morning at Pierce College, clocking a personal best 18:16 to set the tone for a dominating team victory by the Pirates.

San Pedro won its seventh team title in 11 years by a whopping 95 points as the last four of its five scoring runners (Lorena Garcia, Tiana Thorp, Evelyn Gonzalez and Jocelyn Silva) swept places 7-10 for a cumulative total of 31. The Pirates were so deep, in fact, that their sixth runner, Itzel Ramirez, finished 11th.

"Everyone stepped up huge today and ran big PRs," said San Pedro Coach Bruce Thomson, whose team moves on to next week's state finals in Fresno. "I'm really proud of Laura [Delgado]. She's a senior and it's great to see all of her hard work pay off."

Individual qualifers for next week's state meet in Fresno were Taft senior Fany Alvarado, who finished second in 18:29, Palisades freshman Jacklyn Bamberger (third in 18:32), Venice senior Jaclyn Walles (fourth in 18:43), Los Angeles senior Martha Pena (fifth in 18:46) and Monroe senior Jennifer Mendoza (sixth in 18:55).

Taft and Monroe tied for second in the team competition at 126 points, but Birmingham earned the City's second state berth based on the sixth runner tiebreaker.

Former San Pedro and UCLA standout Valerie Flores, who won five City titles in cross country and track from 1998 to 2000, was on hand to present the team and individual medals.

San Pedro senior Pablo Rosales ran 14:31 to win the City Section boys' cross country championship Saturday morning at Pierce College, breaking the finals record of 14:42 set by Belmont's Roman Gomez in 1983.

Rosales' previous best time was 15:08 in last year's City finals, when he finished second to El Camino Real's Brett Schmitt. This time, he was happy to win but happier that younger brother David, a sophomore, finished ninth and earned the last qualifying spot for next week's state meet in Fresno.

"I felt comfortable, I was pushing it, but I didn't think I was on a fast enough pace to get the record," Rosales said. "When I reached the two-mile mark I was like 'It's now or never.' I had a big lead so I just went for it."

Also qualifying for the state meet as individuals were runner-up Javert Solarzano of Granada Hills (15:04), junior Macario Sanchez of Santee (15:35) and senior Sumit Misra of Granada Hills (15:38).

Monroe won the team title with 55 points, led by fifth- and sixth-place finishers Jorge Mendez (15:23) and Fabian Parra (15:34). Birmingham and Granada Hills tied for second at 72 points but Birmingham had the faster sixth runner and will join Monroe at the state meet.

Rosales' time was eight seconds off the all-time course record at Pierce, set by Granada Hills' Ian Alsen in a dual meet in 1987.

It's hard for me to believe there won't be a better quarterback in Southern California in 2010 than Max Wittek of Santa Ana Mater Dei. The 6-foot-4 junior had his season ended Friday night in a 28-21 loss to La Puente Bishop Amat, but what great progress he has made and what potential he has.

Unlike former Mater Dei quarterbacks Matt Leinart and Matt Barkley, Wittek can run out of the pocket, and combine that with his powerful arm and it's clear he has all the makings of a top college prospect.

I also saw some toughness and determination Friday that I hadn't seen earlier this season as he tried to learn the offense and become a leader on the field. I can't wait to see him next June when summer passing competitions begin. He's on my radar, and he'll be on lots of college recruiting lists too.

-- Eric Sondheimer

It no longer matters whether the game was pretty, whether the team made mistakes or how close victory was. It's all about winning and moving to the next game in the playoffs, and top-seeded Valencia (11-0) is just happy about getting a 28-27 victory over Thousand Oaks in the Northern Division playoffs.

This was the easiest game to predict that an upset was possible. Thousand Oaks had lost to Valencia, 39-36, in the season opener. When the pairings were announced, Valencia Coach Larry Muir said, "I saw the draw, 'Holy Cow,' " he said.

Thousand Oaks (5-6) came back from a 28-7 deficit and went for the victory with 28 seconds left, but Zach Tartabull came through with an interception on a two-point conversion attempt to put the Vikings into the quarterfinals against Ventura Buena.

"It's survive and advance," Muir said.

I think Valencia suffered from not having a tough game for weeks in a weak Foothill League. "They had been on autopilot for a while," Muir admitted.

But also credit Thousand Oaks, which has lots of good young players but just couldn't come up with the big victory this season. Now the Vikings can return to the form that got them the No. 1 seed in a division with St. Bonaventure and Westlake.

"I feel good," Muir said. "I think our kids refocused."

-- Eric Sondheimer
