Sutanu is a developer of prints, who hails from Orissa, India. This post will take you deeper into the collaboration between Varun Sardana and Sutanu Panigrahi.

Varun, also an amateur photographer with feverish passion, has spent a lot of time shooting his auto-portraits, some of which are on public display on his personal tumblr blog, monologue. Some of these pictures were shown to Sutanu and there was born a collaboration. Sutanu has taken these photographs, digitally remastered, manipulated and superimposed them with images of forests and created a series of strong, stunning images.

Fashion Blogs in India like blogs everywhere else are the first to pick up on new trends, new talent, new directions. We have always liked the democratic nature of blogs- not fixed by any corporate PR strategy and the accessibility that a blog offers - instant comments, instant feedback!
For our S/S'11 show at the British Council, we made a special effort to invite bloggers and provide them with the same front row seating that the established Fashion media always get. I just abhor parking my vehicle in the basement of malls where I have to make several rounds across different basement floors to find space… if at all! Malls are getting overcrowded and in this situation, "Click here to confirm your purchase" works and how! Electronic retailing, acknowledged as E-Tailing, deals with selling products online and is synonymous with business-to-consumer transaction. Sure, log on to an online retailer you trust and shop to your hearts content but do confirm that the products are qualified under certain standards and the payment gateway is secured.
Neither bitter cold nor worries about the currency crisis seem to have put a chill on consumer spending. Consumers kept flocking online to spend, and on the week ended Dec. 19, 2010 they shelled out $5.5 billion online, comScore reported. Encouraged, I did my shopping on-line this season and had a positive experience at Pret-Amoda.com. It was during a freezing evening earlier this month in Delhi, curled up in a woolly blanket wearing jeans and sweatshirts (well, who needs to get dressed for online shopping?), glass of Virgin Mojito in one hand, mouse in the other. Incredible!
I wanted a rock chic look for a party so after browsing awhile I settled for Varun Sardana braid wing top and Rajesh Pratap Singh Swarovski and leather bracelet, entered my shipping address, proceeded up to the HDFC Bank payment gateway and completed the payment. My experience was good... Everything was delivered luxuriously packaged within a week. After this positive experience, I do not intend to stress myself out shopping in town when I want to replenish my wardrobe! Have I converted you too ;-)

An Indian in Paris

Aux Laines Ecossaises, one of the oldest stores in Paris (dating back to 1894), asked Varun to design special windows for Paris Fashion Week. It was a delicious fashion moment - a veritable French fashion institution focused on Scottish knits , with window displays by a designer from India! It was amazing to have a window on St. Germain, right next to all the designers we have always looked up to. We would like to thank the amazing people at MP Select and Aux Laines Ecossaises who made it all happen.

A show is not a one man show - so many people come together to make it happen. This show in particular was special. We collaborated with Paper Engineer Sachin George who came up with his amazing shadow installation 'Into the valley' which depicted the changing landscapes of our cities. Tenzin Dakpa's short film 'Clouds' spoke of loneliness and isolation in the city and was a perfect foil to the collection. All girl band 'Skinny Boys' worked their magic on Pete Seeger's 'Where have all the flowers gone'. Parikhit Pal was backstage documenting the grit and toil behind the show. These are all our partners in crime, our co-conspirators, young creative people who wanted to do something different, something to shake things up a bit, to challenge notions, to engage, to dissect. So what if the conventional media chose to ignore what we did - we are no longer dependent on them to get the word out, thank you all for being so supporting of the blog- we have had more than 25500 visitors in the last one and half months and that's very encouraging!! We would not be here without you. Here's to more conspiracies and collaborations!

As we move on from one stage in life to the next, there is a sense of loss, a sense of moving on. This collection is based on that journey. It takes inspiration from the sense of change that we have all around us, in our country and in our cities; we are moving forward rapidly but while we fight to win the global economic war, there are scars of that battle everywhere. Our cities are dug up and shrouded in the dust of construction, our old playgrounds and parks are giving way to parking lots and our bustling markets are being eaten up by sterile malls. We are losing all that is poignant, nostalgic and unique about our lives and this is an ode to that loss of beauty.

As time goes by, I find myself more interested in the assimilation and dissemination of ideas, I feel that the show has to be more than a display of clothes; it is a vehicle for all the ideas, feelings and emotions that have germinated the collection.

For this season, I wanted to explore the idea of collaborating with other visual artists to see the interplay and resonances of expressing one idea through different mediums. The sense of isolation and loss in the fast-changing city is brought out by Filmmaker and Photographer, Tenzin Dakpa through his short film ‘Clouds’ and by Paper Engineer, Sachin George Sebastian with his shadow installation ‘Into the Valley’. The music for the show is being performed by Skinny Boys, Delhi's only all girl rock band who will be singing a rendition of Pete Seeger's classic 'Where have all the flowers gone' which as an anti war song is a perfect metaphor for the theme of the collection. Tenzin will also be making a film based on the process of the show, thus taking the show out of the context of just being relegated to a display of the collection. This is my first step in exploring how the premises of fashion can be expanded beyond the conventional audience and I would like to build and work on this more in the coming seasons.

I have worked with a neutral palette for this collection – the primary colours are beige, white, ivory and black. The focus is still on the body and ways of defining and shaping the form but in a softer way. The lines are not sharp but flow along the curves of the body. There is a lot of interplay between transparency and opacity and between fluidity and rigidity. I have worked with many explorations and manipulations of fabric to achieve texture or to provide an inherent shape to the garments. There is extensive use of hand and couture-based skills to achieve the concepts used in the collection.
