My Iowa Presidential Caucus Experience 2012.

I scanned my sticker when I got home.

My precinct is CR-35 in Cedar Rapids, IA. Our caucus took place at Johnson Elementary School. I went with my Daughter Cassidy. She turned 18 last September, so it was her first participation with politics.

When we showed up there was someone performing a survey in the lobby, We took part in the survey. I don’t know whose it was, or the purpose. It was pretty Generic. I wish I had gotten a copy of the survey form. I'm sure the survey I filled out is referenced in this ABC article. http://goo.gl/oeNs3 I was distracted by the Democrats coming to caucus that were turned away. There was no Democratic caucus tonight in my precinct.

The actual caucus took place in the lunchroom at Johnson Elementary. There were child size chairs setup in rows. I had to register as a Republican in order to caucus as a Republican. They required my driver’s license to verify my address. They gave me a sticker and asked me to wait. I would need to have the sticker in order to get a ballot later on in the process.

When the caucus started there was an election for the Chairman and Secretary of the caucus. Then they passed the hat, which I thought was interesting. They called it "The Lincoln Bag". The chairman explained that the money would only go to Linn county Republican candidates. State house and senate I presume. There was a process point of order. The group elected to wait until 10 after seven to close the door to late comers.

At 7:10 the first participant campaigning for each candidate by caucus participants got up. He read a speech from his smartphone in support of Michele Bachmann. A gentleman then got up and spoke for Rick Santorum. And another for Ron Paul.

After the speeches those with stickers were given ballots. The ballots were small pieces of paper with a watermark on one side. We were instructed to write our candidates name on the paper and hand it in.

After the votes were handed in the chairman asked for individuals to help count the ballots. They were asking for one person to observe for each candidate. I didn't participate in the count.

After the ballots were counted the Secretary got up and announced the results.
